The Obama Administration’s definition of “bipartisanship” is: “do it our way or else,” which is why — as the sham of the “healthcare summit” plays itself out on national televion — John Kass’s explanation of the Chicago Way is such a timely piece of journalism. Here’s a sample:
The Republicans wanted to dance. Now they’ll have to step lightly. They were foolish to get trapped in his so-called summit on national health care. Or did they actually think they could outperform the skinny fellow from Chicago?
Obama will be in his element, talking and lecturing, the law professor framing the debate. He’ll spend hours being seen as reasonable. The Republicans will balk and the president will shrug. He’ll sigh and say he tried to reason with them but they refused.
Then once the cameras are turned off, he’ll take out the baseball bat and explain how things get done The Chicago Way.
Obama understands the first rule of “compromise” — once you get your opponent off his bedrock principles and starting to meet you halfway, the game is already over and all that’s left is to run the table at your leisure.
So as you watch the president, with his saturnine scowl betraying his faux-Bobby Bonilla smile every step of the way, and listen to Schemer Schumer — the reincarnation of Dutch Schultz’s legendary mouthpiece, Dixie Davis, whose every word is a lie, whose every gesture of good fellowship is feigned and whose every offer of reasonable compromise is a poisoned pill — try to keep in mind Kass’s analysis:
It’s all about muscle. As an acolyte of the Chicago Democratic machine, he’s seen muscle at work in Daleyland. Now he’s in the White House, and he’s going to use muscle too.
And then, just so you can understand the sheer depths of hypocrisy of the people you’re up against, watch this:

John Kass has been performing yeoman's work for years…
And is one of the last few reasons to read The Tribune. His gritty, earthy, 'Chicago guy' take on things, particularly on politics, cuts to the quick and lambastes with surgical precision.
It is Capone's city still, you see- and he is aware of that component in the 'city that works'. It works because of the baseball bat- my way highway- approach. It isn't pretty, but there it is.
Within that framework come the Left wing Utopians from Hyde Park. Barry, Billy Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, Jeff Jones, Jeremiah Wright- you get the picture.
The kneecapping Democrats carved out a niche for these unrepentant America haters to thrive. Kass chronicles this as well as anyone. With good humor as well.
If you want to crawl inside the heads of these thugs his stuff is MUST reading…
Honorable folks.
It will take some fancy foot work on the GOPs side to avoid coming out of this looking like fools.
I have no doubts the President will come off as a total boob, the MSM will spin that as mind boggling brilliance.
But the potential for victory is there. The left is so arrogant, it should be easy enough for them to screw up.
I'll seek out John Kass's work; thank you.
O is community organizing today, on camera.
Well Kass is exactly right about how it's going to go down.
It was the classic set-up. Anything they do will be perceived (and reported on endlessly) as being uncooperative.
It's a no win situation.
I must say this; anybody can be a journalist. It takes talent and training to be a reporter.
I respect reporters.
The ony right life gives you is DEATH.
He knows them so well he could write their biography. He should write a book about them as he's an easy to read writer.
The marxist mafia – we always called them thugs, now we know why, and we're the dummies…
Kass may be honest but he has been wrong. The Democrats, especially Obama, look horrible.
Could not agree more. Everything this scum bag does is to entrap, trick, lie. He cares nothing about Americans or America. Unless of course you consider the destruction there of as an attempt at caring!
Democrats never played poker for they gambled and lost in this staged health summit event. It is truly a pity the republicans need to explain the democrats own health bill to these democrats. God help America.
John Kass is one of the few journalist who will actually tell us what is really happening in Chicago. For an excellent view watch his You Tube video "John Kass tries to clean up in City Hall". Mr. Kass took his soap, towel & camerman to City hall to try to take a shower in the Budget Director's costly shower. Classic John Kass.
Kass is wrong. Kass is really a Chicago treasure. I agree that he's one of the only reasons to pick up a Tribune.
But here is where he is wrong. The Chicago Way isn't working in Washington. It really can't The only reason it works in Chicago is because the electorate is asleep. They sleep because they know to escape the hell they just have to move to the suburbs to get away from the rules of Daleyland while still able to visit it in their cars or via public transit.
Americans can't just move to the burbs to get away from the Washington squid. The "suburbs" in this case are another country. They're not going to hitch their wagons to the Alec Baldwin Calgary Trail. No, they're fighting back. They will win too.
Obama should have stayed in Chicago. He would be mayor in 2011. He could enact his decrepit policies and the Chicago voters would accept them because he has charm. Daley was the one that hitched his wagon to the "get Obama out of here" trail. He wanted Obama out of Illinois so fast he knew if he didn't Obama would start to challenge him.
Speaking as an ultra-conservative, Christian, gun-toting right-wing tea party going Deep South redneck, I feel I am qualified to say that the elected Republicans are as fully responsible for the growth of statism & progressivism, and the concomitant decline of our way of life, as the elected Demonrats are. The only amazing thing is not that they are seeking to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory (which is par for the course with them), but that they have managed to keep it together vs the health care bill unanimously for as long as they have. With these guys you have to take your victories where you find them.
Not to despair, though. Remember, it's not the elected Republicans who stopped Obama's supposed juggernaut dead in its tracks, it's not even the Blue Dogs or other elected Demonrats, it's THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. "We the people" made an unprecedented show of force, turning out millions of people in peaceful but passionate protest, including over a million in our capitol city.
"We the people, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and ENSURE THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY TO OURSELVES AND OUR POSTERITY" have done our founding fathers proud. WE have stopped Obama in his tracks, but we cannot pat ourselves on our back for a job well done. We have to keep on fighting the good fight — our course is not yet run, brothers and sisters. We must finish the race, and we must race to win.
That means not trusting the elected Republicans to do our job; they will sell us down the river in a heartbeat. Conservatism=Americanism, but Republicanism does not equal Conservatism. Not yet.
well said and reasoned…
But Obama and Chicago aren't the end result; they are just hired hands for the international interests behind them.
When it suits THEIR needs they will throw this bunch overboard in a heartbeat. And that could be sooner than you think…
Obama's favorite movie is "The Godfather" – not "Mr Smith Goes to Washington".
He delights in the "power play" advocated by Rahm "Dead Fish" Emmanuel and David "Astroturf" Axelrod his consigieres.
When I want the truth about Obama and the 'machines' he's a part of, I look for articles by John Kass.
Joh Kass knows of which he writes, there's another great reporter from chiTown who also knows od which she speaks, Evelyn Pringle, a lefty, jas done a whose series titled 'Curtain Time For Barack Obama' and this is the definitive work on BO's time in the belly of the ChiTown Combine's Beast, http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL0805/S00171.htm
"Arf, arf, neigh, neigh" Just another dog and pony show presented to us by our esteemed White House. We are so proud.
Indeed- you shouls read the fawming Stilberg piece in yesterday's NYT.
Some wag once defined the Obama Admin as "moveon.org run by the Chicago Machine."
What I don't understand is how come the Communists running the Tribune have not gotten rid of Kass yet?
Surely, like the rest of the State-run media, they are aiming for ideological purity.
Lots of Good information in your posting, I bookmarked your blog post so I can visit again in the future, All the Best
"…the first rule of “compromise” — once you get your opponent off his bedrock principles and starting to meet you halfway, the game is already over…"
This is what the numb-nut pantie-waist Nancy-boy Republicans always fall for. Grow some stones boys, if your right, your right. F**k "getting along", where has that gotten you? You surrender, your supporters get demoralized and you lose elections. The other side over reaches, you wake up and then we fall for it all over again.
What's the definition of insanity?
Hmm…
I assume you, like me, live in close proximity to DaleyLand. I have to disagree as to why it ain't working in D.C. (yet). They didn't romance the Repubs first, and blow "sweet nothings" in their ears. Simply, they didn't co-opt enough of 'em to properly set the hook. Forgive the metaphor, but you can't beat your wife until AFTER the wedding. Major strategic blunder. Well, he is an Amateur.
Give them time, they may get it right.
Oh, and in case you are not familiar with me, I can't stand what is being perpetrated against us by the current regime. Kass is a treasure.
Any serious ideas promoted by a republican in this dog and donkey show will be ignored by the dems and the media. This is just a sham and everyone involved knows it. We don't have three branches of govmt, we have three rings in a circus and Maobama is the clown.
Obama could sit in this meeting for hours and say whatever offense comments he wants. He could be rude, obnoxious, off putting, dismissive, arrogant, etc. etc., just like he usually is….As long as he provides 5 minutes of "reasonable" talk for the MSM to feature in their nightly newscasts….This is a rig job from the get go. Everybody who is against Obamacare and the rest of the plan to "fundamentally transform America" already knows this. The rest continue to wake up, one person at time…..Remember that the next time you hear some inane comment like "health care is a right", while waiting in the checkout line at the supermarket…..
You'll want a bath afterwards though. He doesn't clean up any of the dirt at all. Which is a good thing.
Of course the summit was a sham, but they overplayed their hand. Expecting docile Republicans of old, they instead got their tails handed to them by a rejuvenated group of Republicans. The circus backfired, this is not Cook County, this is the big stage and Obama and his group looked like petulant brats, unprepared and arrogant. Payback is coming in November.
John Kass' coverage of the 2005 White Sox World Series tribute was marvelous.
This is a defining moment in America's history. The problem is that not only is the enemy coming form within, but that enemy is in the highest places of power in our government, with authority ceded by We The People and protected by the very Constitution that the enemy in question seeks to destroy.
From what I saw of the so-called "health-care summit" was that it was an obvious dog and pony show orchestrated by the Democrats to give the appearance they were trying to be bipartisan. What an utter sham. The insufferable smugness of "because I'm the president" Obama literally made me want to puke. Anyone who cannot see through this grandstanding and grade D acting ability is really delusional indeed … mentally unfit to catch the subway home from work. No wonder they want "free" health care. They gave up their personal freedom and dignity long ago.
The outright lies, with no intent to even try and cover their tracks, shows their utter disregard of the American People. This group would throw the lot of us into an Auschwitz in a heart-beat if they thought they could get away with it.
The video posted here is SO telling. I have never in my life seen such unabridged hypocrisy and dishonesty. It is disgusting. It is nauseating. I can't even find the words to write of my disgust. These people have no souls; they turned into gollums years ago.
