New York State, one of the most corrupt political entities on the planet, has long been a graveyard for aspiring African American politicians. As Mayor of the City of New York, David Dinkins — the first and so far last black mayor — presided over the infamous Crown Heights race riot in 1991, as well as a horrific murder rate that topped 2,000 homicides a year during his infelicitous one-term administration, and was easily defeated by Rudy Giuliani in their electoral rematch in 1993.

But most black politicians never even get that far. Although demographics have shifted, the state is still largely controlled by the bastard idiot children of the Tammany Hall ethnic groups — the Irish, the Italians and the Jews — who grabbed controlled of the Democrat Party starting in the late 19th century and never let go. (Someone should write a novel on this subject!) For years, the Republicans controlled the state senate under their leader, Joe Bruno, the Democrats ran the assembly under their leader, Sheldon Silver, and the two criminal organizations split control of the state house under various hapless nonentities like George Pataki.
Until David Paterson found himself sitting in Albany in the wake of Eliot “Love Client No. 9″ Spitzer’s sudden resignation, black politicians needed not apply — as Carl McCall, the former state comptroller, found out in 2002, when he fought a bruising primary battle for the Democrat gubernatorial nomination against Andrew Cuomo, son of the former governor, and incurred the wrath of the Clinton Machine. The sleazy, slippery Cuomo, currently state attorney general, had Paterson in his sights this year and probably would have defeated him in a primary until the New York Times did his dirty work for him and Paterson announced he would not run this fall.
The latest African American to see his political hopes founder upon the old Tammany wigwam is Harold Ford., Jr., the carpetbagging scion of the fabulously corrupt Ford family of Tennessee:
His father was tried and acquitted on federal bank fraud charges in 1993. His uncle, Emmitt, resigned from the state House in 1981 after a conviction on insurance fraud. Another uncle, John, resigned from the state Senate last year after being charged with taking $55,000 in bribes. He has pleaded not guilty, and his trial is set for October, within weeks of the election.
Ford Jr. confronts his family’s reputation head-on during campaign stops, telling critics to “shut up” and asking voters to consider his record instead of his family’s problems.
With a background like that, Harold Ford, Jr., is certainly well-qualified to represent New York State in the U.S. Senate, and might have made a formidable challenger to Kirsten Gillibrand, the upstate cipher appointed by Paterson to keep Hillary Clinton’s senate seat warm and to act as Sen. Charles “Schemer” Schumer’s sock puppet.

Now comes word that Harold Ford, Jr., will not in fact be challenging Sen. Cipher. From the New York Post:
Tennessee transplant and former U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr. has decided not to challenge unelected incumbent Kirsten Gillibrand for her US Senate seat, sources said tonight.
“I heard from Harold Ford and he has decided not to run,” said Assemblyman Vito Lopez, the Kings County Democratic chairman who had strongly indicated a willingness to back Ford. After giving it considerable thought and talking it over with his wife, he reached the conclusion that he would not be running, although he said he would like to remain active in the Democratic Party here,” Lopez continued.

Translation: Harold Ford, Jr., had it explained to him by Sen. Schemer — in the nicest possible way — that challenging Sen. Sock Puppet might be deleterious to his political health and that, like other black politicians who get too big for their britches — Charlie Rangel, call your office! — he should take his seat in the back of the bus, and like it.
Which he’s now done. From the New York Times:
WHEN it was reported two months ago that I was thinking seriously about running for the United States Senate from New York, Democratic Party insiders started their own campaign to bully me out of the race — just as they had done with Representatives Carolyn Maloney, Steve Israel and others.
The cruel twist, of course, is that the party bosses who tried to intimidate me so that I wouldn’t even think about running against Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who had been appointed to the seat by Gov. David A. Paterson, are the same people responsible for putting Democratic control of the Senate at risk.
Somewhere, the ghost of George Washington Plunkitt is smiling.

It's par for the course.
White democrats are notoriously racist.
They only allow black politicians in their party, to keep the black vote.
When not needed to ensure power, they are tossed aside.
Ouh, this one will leave a bruise.

You make the oppostions case very well. The mayoralty of David Dinkins was a low point in the history of the city of New York. Crime was rampant and out of control and it seemed like Dinkins could or would not do anything about it. And who is this carpetbagger Ford, do we really need someone like him in New York? And if Charlie Rangel did something criminal then he should pay the price for it. It is you who have put a color spin on all of this and shame on you.
I don't know if the New York State Democratic establishment hates Harold Ford Jr., but Don Imus sure does.
Harold Ford is black?
In this case I can see some of the Dem's logic. The Democrats already have an obedient puppet in place that they don't want to lose to someone that may not respond as well to the pulling of strings. In this logic, it is better to go with the puppet you know than the puppet that may turn and bite you further down the road.
I thought little barry was mostly white?
The question should be does the Democratic establishment hate Black people? The answer then would be YES. Why else would every policy be against them?
Maybe they're afraid the community organizer might organize the black politicians, against the will of the dems?
He cannot expect help from Rangel with all of his problems. Sharpton too, He ought to try Chicago.
They don't help themselves very much. When they do get into office, they spend and steal like there's no tomorrow. Yeah, I know, you're all yelling racist now. I'm not, I'm just stating facts. Most of them do exactly that. And they're arrogant SOBs besides, like they are due something just for being African American.
Anyone remember Laura Blackburn? She headed the Housing agency when Dummy Dinkens was mayor. She bought a $10,000 PINK couch for her office and spent much more on stupid things like money was from trees. She had to resign. A few years later they make her a judge. She then lets a wanted guy out the back door of the courthouse because cops were waiting to arrest him on another charge.
Yeah, they don't help themselves much at all.
Um, Charlie Rangel broke the law. And nothing will happen, he won't even lose his chairmanship of the committee that WRITES TAX LAW!
Oh, and isn't Gillibrand the person appointed to fill the seat of the most high-profile carpetbagger of all? Hillary Clinton?
Naw, you don't get it, Barry's white half is the reason he sucks.
/Democrat off
Can anyone name me an elected black politician who isn't a corrupt douchebag?
This has to be some kind of joke! Harold Ford Jr. is no more "black" than is Derek Jeter!
I lived in Tennessee under the Fords. It doesn't get any worse.
Black or white, if they are democrats or have Union ties, they are corrupt….
In all fairness, Dinkins was disaster even by NYC Democratic standards.
Ford should run as a Republican, turn honest and stick it to Democrats at every turn. That'll learn them.
No! This can’t be, the enlightened state of New York…you must be wrong?
Forget the NY Democrats Establishment, this is all over the country. Chicago, California, even places like Vegas, they all hold us back. The reason why the dems give us everything the poorest want is because it is hard to almost impossible to give up free money, food, and housing when you have lived under it for years. They don't teach you that you can succeed they teach you, you need us. But what I say is, I don't need you. You need us. We must rise up and make a difference. We need to educate our brethren, not just blacks but the poor whites as well.
The democrats make it hard to almost impossible to raise up and get ahead.
I HAVE BEEN EDUCATING MYSELF AND MY FRIENDS WITH HELP FROM: http://www.americanparchment.com SO THEY CAN SEE WHAT THE DEMS ARE REALLY UP TO AND HOW CORRUPT THEY REALLY ARE.
There are fourteen democrat elected Jewish Senators and 0000000elected black Senators.Jews are only 2 percent of the population and blacks are 15percent.So vattttt do you think is going on.The bolsheviks are using the blacks like a cheap sho shine.
Saying "New York State, one of the most corrupt political entities on the planet" is an insult to Chicago, they have worked hard to earn that reputation. </sarcasm>
"Carpetbagger Ford"? What are Bill and Hillary? I know; white.
Of course they hate blacks – they are progressive liberals, and like Margaret Sanger, their doyenne, they wish blacks were all aborted and eliminated.
Most racists are either black or progressives. All a racist sees is color.
I guess you never heard of Clarence Thomas, "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" ?
"Conservative plays well-worn race card yet another time. Film at eleven."
Judaism is a religion.
"conservative" plays well worn race card yet another time"? Look at your own party, lib. You Dems have played the race card so many times, with impunity, that it has almost lost its meaning. It has been massaged by your dirty little nubs so much that you could not possibly hide it's frayed edges in a deck of well-worn poker cards. Libs do not have sole proprietorship on the word "racism", solely because it is they who use it whenever someone disagrees with them. Whenever you guys do use it, it screams racism right back at ya.
It's George Bush's fault a black man can't be elected to office in New York.
I'd like to see that film, but alas it doesn't exist.
Conservatives have no reason to play the race card. We have a political philosophy that's all inclusive — everyone who loves our country and wants to work towards making us prosperous and safe is welcome.
It's the libs who limit their membership to entitlement parasites and elitist overseers.
Harold Ford's problem was that the things that made him electable in Memphis make him dead-on-arrival in New York. Too long a paper trail. He had to do so many 180's that he was completely unbelievable to both liberals and conservatives.
David Dinkin's problem was that he was inept and boring. New Yorkers will tolerate one or the other but not both.
David Patterson's problem is that he was window dressing and was completely unprepared for the resignation of Client No. 9. He's the son of long-time party broker Basil Patterson and has no constituency of his own. So, the legislature has no problem telling him to go to hell.
On the other hand, Bill Thompson lost the mayor's race to Mike Bloomberg by only 50K votes despite being outspent 15 to 1.
Charlie Rangel, the Duke of Harlem, wants nothing more than being Congressman-for-Life. He will never get voted out unless he goes to jail and even then, I'm not sure. I predict he only way he will leave office is feet first.
I'm from NY and I don't think race has anything to do with it really. The people that have power will do what ever it takes to retain it, and that includes back stabbing members of their own party if they want.
The real push is to get some one with potential presidential aspirations in Albany, which is why Paterson is out and Cuomo is in for governor.
New York liberals are all about power. They still miss Spitzer because he had his eyes on the white house already. The governor's mansion was never anything more than a bull pen for the White House for him.
Rangel is one giant walking rap sheet. But the powerful in NY seldom are tried and punished for their crimes. And the House and Senate in DC are even more loath to hold their own accountable.
Years ago we had a senator named Al D'Amoto who liked to have people refer to him as Senator Pothole. Well, some of ol' potholes friends got caught with their fingers in the cookie jar. Part of the fall out was a few formal letters with Pothole's office stationary and signature, blatantly using his office to illegally influence federal contracts.
Old Pothole's defense was that some one must have snuck into his office, stuck them in a stack of papers he signed with out reading, so he had no idea about them.
And what did his colleagues in DC find? They admonished him for not having better security and office policies.
Schummer finally knocked him out of office when he won.
See in New York, we trade down on moral ethics.
Ford's an outsider, there's plenty of others who've been waiting their turn at the cannibal pot before him. NY politicians don't take kindly to that unless you have a ton of connections – i.e. Clinton and Kennedys.
Ford, from TN, going to run in NY.
NY sure is the prize, the stepping stone, for up and comers, eh? Harold Ford viewed NY as his stepping stone toward the Presidency. He wanted to be the second black President, about eight years from now. Never happen though.
It worked for Hillary, and many more.
" I predict he only way he will leave office is feet first."
Today couldn't be too soon…….
Didn't work out too well for Rbt. Kennedy.
Tennessee didn't like him, why would NY want him to be their Senator. Gillebranmuffin just may get beat, wouldn't that be hysterical? Throwing in with Obama's green CZAR communist isn't exactly the PC thing to do in an election year, but then, if she were smart, Schumer wouldn't want her carrying his briefcase.
No one thought a RINO could win in MA either. November will be the best election this country has had since the end of the civil war! We may actually get some citizens in office for the first time since the last group of progressives were defeated around the beginning of the last century.
In NY, not a chance.
You are right. I forgot about that.
But is did work out well for US.
Don't forget the GOP has its share of corrupt politicians.
Larry "Wide Stave" Craig ring any bells.
(Sorry, I just love that excuse, what was he thinking?)
Are you kidding me? Tamney Hall was stealing the state blind when Chicago was still trying to figure out how skim money from the slaughterhouses.
I blame global warming.
The Dems can arrange that if he gets to be too much of a distraction to Obama. He better be careful, these Chicago thugs don't play as nice as the ones in Harlem.
every black politician in ny state is a crook. paterson, barron, rangel, smith, flake, corbin, etc etc
Wow, thanks for the recommendation to adopt identity politics and install a scion of yet another corrupt political family solely on the basis of race. Could you get any more progressive for us?
Never mind that the overwhelming majority of black and hispanic people in NY live in NYC.
Never mind that the demographic disposition of the rest of the state winds up favoring people of Irish or Italian descent for various position.
Never mind completely overlooking the growing Hispanic influence in NY politics.
You just leap right to declaring us all a bunch of old-style political machine and liberal racists because a guy you mock because of his family record cannot get any traction with the Democratic political machine. It is all the fault of the evil Irish, Italians, and Jews looking to preserve their ethno-political supremacy, and has nothing at all to do with political hackery.
Again, thank you ever so much, and please be sure to invite Harold Ford Jr. to run for the Senate to replace Joe Lieberman or Barbara Boxer (whichever is applicable) since you are so enamored of his ethnic qualifications for the job.
ED
There are MANY corrupt Repubs, none of them are Contitutional Conservatives, only RINO's and DIM's…But I get what you mean….
Except for a few, ALL need to be expelled…
Harold Ford in from TN, he couldn't hold onto that little rep. seat he had. He has no business running in NY. Myself I could care less.
Somewhat.
A few shades lighter than Barry.
I think his eyes though are yellow or blue though.
Very interesting article. Personally, I don't think Harold Ford stayed true to his core beliefs. He has flip-flopped on many of the positions he held while he served in public office in Tennessee. Seems to me that he just changes with the state he's in.
David Dinkins was a long time Democratic party hack who climbed the ladder over the years. He defeated Ed Koch in the Democratic primary for two reasons: the Howard Beach incident and, after 12 years, people got tired of Ed Koch's antics (fun fact: no mayor has served longer than 12 years since Peter Stuyvesant). After that, he should have won the general election in a walk since, in New York, people would elect Adolf Hitler if ran as a Democrat.
Once in office, Dinkins turned out to be totally inept. Even worse than that, he was dull and boring. New Yorkers want their mayors to be, if not effective, then at least entertaining.
As for Charlie Rangel, his position as Duke of Harlem is secure, no matter what
You are looking for a miracle–right?
Very insightful. Communists have always ranted about protecting the rights of blacks. Soviet children were taught that this was one basis of communism's moral superiority over racist capitalism.
Hillary Clinton buys a house in upstate NY, shows up to a few Yankees games, and she's welcomed with open arms by the New York voters.
But Ford is the evil carpetbagger.
Race had nothing to do with Ford's overwhelming rejection by the public in New York. He is an entitlement-drenched carpetbagger from a corrupt race-baiting political dynasty. He is a breath-takingly opportunistic carpetbagger. He draws a million dollars a year from a bailed-out Wall Street firm for a no-show job. And his trainwreck of an interview with the New York Times revealed him to be a callow, laughable, arrogant little elitist. Some bags are too douche for even New York voters.
Gentle Readers,
Just a little off-topic, but Eliot Spitzer was the AG then Governor of NY State: He had $80,000 his wife didn't know about to pay for ' services '. Where did he get that money? Is there more ' unknown cash ' someplace?
As AG Spitzer prosecuted the CEO of AIG, a man named Greenberg, who ran it as a very conservative insurance company: no credit-default swaps or derivatives. After he was replaced, AIG got into those risky investments and went from profitable to losing $180 Billion. Greenberg was completely exonerated, not just found ' not guilty ' but basically
completely cleared of all charges.
Any connection? Spitzer is responsible for a huge part of the financial meltdown. People made alot of money on those deals.
Kindest Regards to all,
I am,

J.C. Watts – but he got out of the mess.
The rest are all Democrats, which screams "Douchebag" having to say a word.
I really object to the basic premise of this post. The reason black politicians don't do well at the statewide level in New York has to do with modeled themselves on Adam Clayton Powell, Jr, a race-baiting, community-agitating, mau-mauing corruptocrat who drained the treasury to perpetuate dependency in the black community. And the more flamboyant the rhetoric, the bettter. White New Yorkers know this: we lived with the poisoned fruits of these charlatans, cheek by jowel. .
And as for Harold Ford, Jr., well, every New Yorker knows a punk when they see one.
Its also an ethnicity.

She was not welcomed by me.
I voted against her in the primary and I voted against her in the general election.
I did vote for her in the Presidential primary, but given her opponent, I think that is excusable. I still washed thoroughly afterwards. Repeatedly. And got involved in third party politics.
Well put.
BZ – a third party will hand the dems more wins just like it did when Perot handed over the WH to Clinton.
Have been stuck here in the Empire (state) for the last couple of years, and back in the 20th Century spent a large part of my life around the Albany area; my only political experience was a bit of involvement in Second Amendment politics during the 90s. I agree that it's one of the most corrupt entities in Western government circles today. However, there's no point focusing on the racism here. The problem is that Gov. Paterson defied President Obama, who told him publicly to quit and cold-shouldered him publicly at a local speaking engagement. This whole business with the aide, if it is true (and it may be), would never have reached the light of day if Paterson had the power elite behind him. Machine politics and the abuse of power are what is wrong with this picture, not racism. That isn't to say racism is not present — it is. However, as Reagan showed us long ago, it is important to call things by their real names before you can defeat them.
Eliot Spitzer has quite a lot of money of his own. He's the son of Bernard Spitzer, a real estate big shot. Spitzer's father bankrolled his early political campaigns. Spitzer has a full floor apartment on Fifth Avenue (although it's rumored that he sleeps on the couch these days) and is worth about half a billion dollars.
So 80 grand for him is not even pocket change for him, it's pocket lint.
