Nope, no need at all. Not when the Left has a stalwart soldier such as the disgraced figure of fun, Dan “Lucy Ramirez” Rather, the cashiered-with-a-fig-leaf former anchorman of the CBS Evening News, unsuccessful litigant and now soon-to-be-former talking head on various low-rated cable shows.
Here he is on the Chris Matthews Show (yes, for some reasons Chris Matthews does not get enough exposure on his low-rated show on MSNBC, so the NBC brass gives him a Sunday show as well). Notice how quickly the leg-tingler-in-chief shuts up Gunga Dan once the word “watermelons” emerges from the “global correspondent’s” mouth:

I think it's a generation gap, dan-the-man is probably two generations before me. For him to use that reference gives away the true depth of racism and sense of superiority that's ingrained in him.
The association of watermelons with black people was especially pernicious because it was the cheapest food that very poor people could afford. Many ate nothing else. A sign of the times is that fried chicken is something that we could say is chosen or preferred. Watermelons have a much nastier connotation – a dig at race and class.

Growing up in the Deep South I never heard of any connection between watermelons and black folk until I entered college which was in the early 70's. BTW, both my maternal and paternal roots owned slaves, and freed slaves 100 years before the Emancipation Proclamation. These families also owned slaves up until the end of the Civil War.
For me watermelon is a staple of summer picnics and kid parties. What Rather refers to having grown up in the South was that in the summertime ANYONE can sell watermelons on the roadside. His assessment of Zero really is earthshaking. He paints him as entirely overrated and brands his administration with an F-!!!!
