Failed former New York Times editor and “self-hating Southerner” Howell Raines — whose dubious journalistic legacy includes the Jayson Blair, Rick Bragg, and the Martha Burk fiascoes — has lurched out of the fly-fishing shadows with this bizarre op-ed piece, apropos of apparently nothing, in the Washington Post.

Why, the carefully crafted lede alone demonstrates why Raines was held in such high regard among the journalistic community during his brief, unhappy tenure in the seat formerly occupied by Clifton Daniel:
One question has tugged at my professional conscience throughout the year-long congressional debate over health-care reform, and it has nothing to do with the public option, portability or medical malpractice. It is this: Why haven’t America’s old-school news organizations blown the whistle on Roger Ailes, chief of Fox News, for using the network to conduct a propaganda campaign against the Obama administration — a campaign without precedent in our modern political history?
As Humpty Dumpty might have said: talk about a portmanteau!
`That’s enough to begin with,’ Humpty Dumpty interrupted: `there are plenty of hard words there. “BRILLIG” means four o’clock in the afternoon — the time when you begin BROILING things for dinner.’
`That’ll do very well,’ said Alice: and “SLITHY”?’
`Well, “SLITHY” means “lithe and slimy.” “Lithe” is the same as “active.” You see it’s like a portmanteau — there are two meanings packed up into one word.’

There’s more:
Whatever its shortcomings, journalism under those standards aspired to produce an honest account of social, economic and political events. It bore witness to a world of dynamic change, as opposed to the world of Foxian reality, whose actors are brought on camera to illustrate a preconceived universe as rigid as that of medieval morality. Now, it is precisely our long-held norms that cripple our ability to confront Fox’s journalism of perpetual assault. I’m confident that many old-schoolers are too principled to appear on the network, choosing silence over being used; when Fox does trot out a house liberal as a punching bag, the result is a parody of reasoned news formats.
My great fear, however, is that some journalists of my generation who once prided themselves on blowing whistles and afflicting the comfortable have also been intimidated by Fox’s financial power and expanding audience, as well as Ailes’s proven willingness to dismantle the reputation of anyone who crosses him. (Remember his ridiculing of one early anchor, Paula Zahn, as inferior to a “dead raccoon” in ratings potential when she dared defect to CNN?) It’s as if we have surrendered the sword of verifiable reportage and bought the idea that only “elites” are interested in information free of partisan poppycock.
Why has our profession, through its general silence — or only spasmodic protest — helped Fox legitimize a style of journalism that is dishonest in its intellectual process, untrustworthy in its conclusions and biased in its gestalt?

Meanwhile the "honest" news organizations like CBS, CNN and The L.A. Times all reported a "brightening employment picture" when 30 states reported increases in the unemployment rate in the previous month.
Does this guy (Raines) actually believe what he writes is the truth and that ignoring more than half of America is journalistic integrity, or is he simply a Progressive Anti-Freedom Fighter?
After 40 years of the alphabet "newsies" telling how it's going to be, and what we're going to think – the challenger Fox News steps up and absolutely beats the stuffing out of the broadcast monolith that is "Main Stream Media" and this disgraced assclown Raines presumes America cares what he thinks?
Raines says "Fox legitimize a style of journalism that is dishonest in its intellectual process, untrustworthy in its conclusions and biased in its gestalt?" while he was pioneering flat out bad journalism as a "business model" is laughable. The "Lame Streamers" have been cheerleading for liberalism and killing themselves in the process for years.
Perhaps Raines will go down in history as the idiot who hastened the demise of the "Gray Lady".
We've voted with with our eyeballs and consumer $$$$$, Raines you LOST.
Wow, wow, wow. This guy cannot come to grips with the fact that his ideology is in fact the failed ideology. He slams "Foxian reality", but criticizes a "universe as rigid as that of medieval morality" in favor of a "world of dynamic change"? And "long-held norms" which have come about through centuries of trial and error and guided our society through difficult times are now part of some bizarre daydream? What the heck is this guy smoking? Does he think the coronation of Obama is the second coming of Christ, irreversible altering the very fabric of the universe?
I've got news for this crackpot: the world is at least 10,000 years old if you adhere to the most strict interpretation of Scripture, and billions and billions more according to science. How can this man whose life has spanned, say, maybe 50 years, have the unmitigated gall to think that the very laws of nature have changed in his insignificant blip of his life on the timline due to the election of a black president in the U.S.? Heck, African countries have had black presidents for years and the world has continued much as it always has. There's nothing so earth shatteringly different between the times we live in and the past except that we have much better technology. Human nature doesn't change.
This man is a real genius. If he had any sense he would see that you can replace FOX with MSNBC, CNN, HLN, CBS, ABC, NBC, NYT, WaPo, etc., in his diatribe, and you'd get a case history of liberal narrative over the last half century. Even longer for the rags we used to call newspapers.
Does this moron hear what he is saying or does he just let it flow like the diarrhea it is?
What this amounts to is a childish tantrum. The whining little progressive isn't getting what he wants, so he throws a fit. Heaven forbid you throw up the fact that conservative voices have been effectively silenced in the media for decades and it's fitting that one (just one) major network is finally standing up for them. He feels his marxist grip slipping from the throat of America and he fears it. To that I say; "Be afraid. Be very afraid."
In the world of journalistic truth, Rains’ oral flatulence would be the equivalent of Hitler indignantly accusing someone of murder.
There was a time when journalists understood that their place was as a watchdog over the ones in power: congress, the courts, the president, the mayors of every city and burg. And no matter what degree of criticism, it was understood that the media's role was to aid the people. Raines seems to think that the media is obligated to aid the administration — his mind is warped by the Marxism so many in his generation were lost to. And while his colleagues report rigidly, unswervingly from the bogus template that America is in a recovery, we continue to experience a deepening recession and massive unrest. Shucks Raines, your intellectually bankrupt flailings do no justice to the biggest grass roots movement in decades. But it's no suprise, the media suffers so badly from groupthink it's laughable. Sadly, the joke is also on us.
So, this character actually cannot grasp that his favored political and cultural biases are not "reality", but simply biases. He concludes that anything that is not in line with him and his, is simply a lie, or is implied hallucination.
Since when did Politics become God, and every facet of your being must be measured or viewed through that lense?
I dare say, this man is dangerous. He's just as wrong, and clearly as delusional as Obama. Many socialists, even communists are not delusional. They just wish things were a certain way, and the side effects are of little importance. They understand the outcome and just happen to agree with it. This guy isn't one of them. He holds wildly radical ideas, but fails to understand they're not reality.
Wow… This place deletes your comments for no reason at all. This guy really does not grasp reality. His comments indicate he assumes all disagreement with his politically based world view is a delusion. To be so wedded to one's political ideology, that you fail to grasp that intellectuals CAN disagree on a wide array of ideas, including your own dearly held 'truths', is not a sign of the best of intellectual acuity. To fail to grasp that disagreement is actually possible, and to assume that all non-conforming thought is really delusion is almost beyond comprehension, for most people. Apparently, this guy lives by it. Many people of reasonable intellect believe in many different ideologies, and argue for the merits of those those they believe. A sense of decency and mutual respect means we consider those who disagree wrong… but still consider them worthy as human beings. This fundamental lack of human decency on his part, well, it should be shouted to every street corner and every customer, until such time as he is replaced and his frankly delusional direction no longer a threat to reasoned open discourse. He obviously does not believe it possible.
Let's see now, how long has Raines been under his rock? Wonder why he came out? Think it's a
coincidence? Think it was just time for him to resurface? Or could it be………James Carville has hired
him on for the little project we heard about a couple weeks ago? Raines comes out swinging, & his
target is Fox. After his abject failure who could convince him he had the high ground to mount this
attack? Ol serpent head's fingerprints are all over this one. Wonder what he got paid for this hit job?
Who will be next? Maybe the Big Sites & A Breitbart?

"It’s as if we have surrendered the sword of verifiable reportage and bought the idea that only “elites” are interested in information free of partisan poppycock".
You gotta love that statement right there.
Poppycock kind of says it all though.
Who says poppycock????????
Crybaby.
Howell Raines needs to be selling watermelons at a roadside fruit stand with Detective Dan Rather. They could crazy each other to death.
The left is still reeling from the VA, NJ and MA elections, the ratings at Fox News and the 1,500+ Tea Party organizations that have united under the flag of true conservatism – and not under some bogus propped-up "leader." (More coffee, Ms. Parks?)
They can't deal with the fact that theirs is no longer the only opinion in the news — and the fact that the conservative media outlets are on the rise, while they are on the demise.
The arrival of rabid trolls who are already rip-your-hair-out angry here on the BIGs, is a positive indication that there really is "hope" and "change" in the air; and not the spread the wealth through fundamental change of America kind.
Even the "Thumbs-down Trolls" who pass through here and click us all downward are laughable! It shows they will do anything to oppose us, but – as usual – are too cowardly to actually debate with anything but MoveOn.org talking points and by echoing MediaMatters gibberish.
If I couldn't watch Fox News, I'd probably take-up building ships in a bottle or rebuilding a classic American car, because the MSM is sickening and worse in their slathering of progressive propaganda.
I guess Mr. Raines thinks Rather, Schorr, Jennings, Cronkite, Amanpour, Brokaw, Curic Stephanopolis, etc. were/are all pure of heart and mind and only interested in informing us.
It's sad, but I believe they believe. Their truth is not our truth.
It's called "agonal gasping." Looks and sounds like actual breathing, but the individual is dead, dead, dead. How awful to be dead and not even know it. Someone should compose a requiem for the MSM.
I like Will Shorts crossword!!
I didn't know who this clown was before I read this. Now I know him better than I want to. What a buffoon! Next it will be: "If only Bush had re-instated the 'Fairness Doctrine', we wouldn't have this problem." I stopped watching the alphabet networks two years ago, when I canceled my cable service. I think that maybe we spend too much time talking about ignorance instead of, maybe, just turning our backs to it. Day after day there is a constant attack on our sensibilities. It's getting a bit tiring. Every conversation I have starts with, "Did you read the article that…." or "Did you see the video of…..". Maybe Obama should leave the country again for awhile. (Oh that's right, did you see the article that said he was postponing his overseas trip so he could stay and fight for the health care reform thing?) But it sure is great having the opportunity to see, in pretty much real time, all the things that this Congress is trying to get away with, isn't it? Love the internet. Even if Al Gore was the one who practically invented it. Remember that? We knew then he was losing it or had lost it already. He cracks me up.
If the MSM didn't engage in left-wing activism all these years there wouldn't have been a need for Fox news. I hope Mr. Raines watched Bill O'Reilly last night because he did a good job of ridiculing him. Why are they so worried about Fox? It's only one channel. If people don't like it there are plenty of other choices either on TV or on the net. American's are smart enough to make up their minds. Of course Raines thinks we're all stupid, which is why they believe in big government, it's needed to take core of us proles.
Yes Fox is right -wing. MSNBC is left-wing. So we can switch between the two of them and get different viewpoints, then go on the net and get other viewpoints. What's the problem? Does he want Fox shut down? Is he against freedom of speech? He want's the media to attack Fox and blow the whistle because the media has been soft on them, he says. You have got to be kidding me. This guy lives in a world of delusion. Fox is constantly attacked by the general media, Jon Stewart, Bill Maher, ya know those nice, fair, non-partisan guys. *big eye roll*
Tonight?
"conduct a propaganda campaign against the Obama administration — a campaign without precedent in our modern political history?" Oh, yeah, Howie, Bush didn't deal with ANYTHING like THAT. Objectivity was the order of the day where Bush was concerned. Whatever. He and Charlie Rose ought to get together and make a "bottle baby." 'Looks like he has the "bottle" part down. What's that about "doubling down" on stupid?
I also add: I'm not surprised it doesn't bother Raines that many people get their news from the leftist clown Jon Stewart.
How Rainhead actually hired a fraud named Jayson Blair and hes now an expert on news? Wasnt How on the Pulitzer committee that gave a Pulitzer to the Washington Commiepost fraud Janet Cooke?
(Part 1) Public confidence in all media outlets has eroded due to the media's abdication of objectivity. There has always been critical, biased writing and essaying that has appeared in news throughout history, and there have been unethical reporters and stories that have made it to the presses. There was a time, however, when the profession of reporting at least attempted a minimum standard of objectivity. This is all but lost. Local reporters and tv news writers inject subjective judgements, both subtle and obvious into every "story." National newsers make bias theit bread and butter. I remember, as a young man studying journalism, what objective reporting looked like when I read and saw it, and the reporting is much different now. Only one of my professors at Pitt was "Old School," insisting on named sources, rigorous fact checking and multiple confirmations. (He was a big time prize winner, by the way.)
(Part 2) The others were unapologetic about their bias and were teaching students how to "trick" people into quotes and selectively use information to promote certain points of view. Their's was a cynical approach; readers were "dumb sheep," who needed the writers' superior intellect to form their opinions. This is the main problem today, whatever the origin. Any news outfit which strives to maintain stringent standards of clear objectivity, keeps opinions on the Op-Ed page, and pursues stories and goals worthy of their status as the "Fourth Estate," will be wildly succesful.
yes, and to whatever extent he would EVER concede any bias on their parts, he would argue that it was purely so the forces of good & light would prevail over those of evil & darkness. basically their position is: "We would NEVER dream of skewing the news, buuuuut even IF we did, it was for a righteous (lefteous?) cause."
but like a lung-shot cape buffalo, they can still be dangerous. prudence demands we keep firing until the whole camp is out of ammo…
Raines begins his comments with an outright lie, a provable lie. Fox News does not "constantly repeat the myth that the American people do not want health care reform" as the lying leftist claims. Fox News reports the TRUTH that the American people do not want OBAMACARE. He and all other MSM types can't understand the simple premise that there is a better way to contain health care costs, provide health care insurance to more people, and save Medicare/Medicaid than the plan the Democrats are proposing
Leftists are liars and thugs. I have always made the distinction between mainstream Democrats and Leftists. I'm begining to think there is no distinction. If Democrats ram Obamacare through, against the wishes of 65% of Americans, I will consider the Democratic party a party of liars and thugs.
as long as humans continue to write & broadcast the news, i have no reasonable expectation of absolute objectivity. i'm perfectly comfortable with human bias, but despise those who pretend not to have any.

Exactly what I was going to say, KDS.
Eight years of George Bush bashing/slashing by left loons

If Republicans had committed the treasonous,
unconstitutional acts of the past 14 months, Dems
would have been screaming "impeach" and "imprison."
Honestly, I doubt anyone but the Almighty God
himself will ever be able to pass judgment on these
people.
Well, given that out of a total population of 307 million, and a population of about 169 million registered voters, there are about 5 million total cable TV news viewers in the US, I don't think that Fox News is somehow mesmerizing the entire nation with its dastardly deeds.

Dude, did you run out of digital ink?
He is simply a besotted middle-aged bum whining in the gutter.
I use it all the time, my mother and grandmother loved the word and I still use it as an homage to their wisdom besides it is a fun word and it confuses the kids!
Isn't it astounding the control over perceptions one has when they control the message? That's why we have to get control of the message but, unfortunately, as long as the left can do that, by always appealing to the basest compulsions and instincts of a human being, it will be an uphill battle.
Another delusional leftist whiner. The mere fact that he supported liars under his charge (who lied to their readers) and that because of his support the NYT began its tortured demise he now expects his leftist minions to rally around his rather stylized but laborious written hand wringing over Fox's business model and its critical analysis of the Obama administration. It is this type of printed tripe that has exposed (and will continue to expose) these people for what they are – elites that live in a fantasy land where their every word is revered and unquestioned. And, that their elite world is to be paid for by those of us who haven't risen to the level of an Ivy League education but must suffer with miserable public education that is provided by evil and powerful old white men. I hope idiots like this guy continue to expose themselves for what they are just as Obama has exposed himself for what he is.
Also, I found it laughable that he gives kudos to Barbara Walters taking on Fox when she's on O'Reilly's show whenever she needs to shill for a upcoming special of hers. Walters, the ever tiresome liberal knows that she won't get her audience share by just advertising on ABC because nobody's watching it. She knows to make her payday she needs to go to O'Reilly to get the word out (she must have something on O'Reilly).
In poker terms …The Howellin' Raynes types have gone "all-in" and are now playin' "on tilt"..
When that happens, it's all over but the shouting……
Sorry about the deletions. We have been having some issues with our filters. Please bear with us.
Raines served a very useful purpose for persons not on the DNC. He personified the distinction between "prostitute" and "whore" in ways the dictionary failed. He is emblematic of all that passes for journalism these days and why it is dying.
Do you remember the moment you realized "journalism" had become raw propaganda? I do, and I left that same day and never looked back.
Howell Raines….. Howlin' at the moon….. Raines rants….. Where does he characterize Jason Blair? When the has-been's and once-were's are dredged from yesterday's swamp to offer an opinion in one of today's swamps, who cares? Howell Raines ~~ Washington Post ~~ NY Times ~~ who cares?

The thing that many of us readily admit is, there are changes that need to be made to our healthcare/insurance industry. I think the Dems look at the things the bill does accomplish, like portability and covering of pre-existing conditions and think that people agree with them, which in concept many do. Meanwhile they are ignoring the cespool of bureacracy and the methods to bribe votes out of people that the unwavering majority of people do not support. I'd like to hear the questions in their polling, "Do your think everyone deserves access to heathcare?", I don't think many would disagree that everyone should have access to a doctor's care, but add government subsidized to that question and this is where the Dems are lying to themselves.
Is the poor little thing losing his little dead racoon friends because of their failure to be journalists?

Not to disagree with oyour point but there are closer to 80 million households with subscriptions to cable and more if you count the additional technologies of satelite service. To wit:
The National Cable and Telecommunications Association (NCTA) statistics state that as of November 2002, 73,525,150 American households subscribed to the above defined cable service. However, this number also includes those households that subscribe to other service tiers, such as premium channels like HBO and Cinemax, in addition to their basic cable television services. This is a statistical number for total cable households in the United States.

Maybe I'm reaching here but I'm beginning to think the progressives are a tad nervous, pulling out all the stops, and cadavers, to pillory, castigate and spit at the right. Palin, Fox News and pretty much anyone who deviates from their misanthropic narrative is fair game to these mavens of tolerance and inclusion. I never kick a dog while it's down but in their case, I'll make an exception. Batter up!
Howell Raines. The ultimate practitioner in the science of "Chutzpah." No discussion of what the MSM put Bush through for eight years. No discussion of the lies spread by hirlings like Jayson Blair. Still living in the delusional world of the New York Upper East and West sides. He has surfaced to set all the yokels straight. Sorry, this east coast conservative (once a Democrat when I didn't know any better) isn't buying his malarkey.
Hey bob — I know there are more cable subscribers in total, but not all of them watch the news. I know it's hard to believe, given what news fiends probably all of us are here
I took my numbers from the latest poll on cable news viewers.
Raines and the others were not this bitter until the MSM started getting so badly beaten in the war of ideas. They outed themselves by being so clearly politically propagandist for Obama and this sociaIist agenda, they unmasked themselves and now they're being destroyed.
MSM has a monopoly in the media except for FOX and talk radio, and they're still losing badly. Yeah for the American team!
.
Like Dan Rather, Mr. Raines comes across as dimwitted, myopic, and bitter. The irony here is beyond belief. It would be interesting to see someone confront Mr. Raines.
Sad to see an old man so bitter and defeated at the end of his life when it's really too late for him to do anything to redeem himself and undo the harm he's caused his entire career. This is an old man mentally shadow boxing.
I guess Kieth Olberman and the rest of them will be doddering intellectually and like that in a few years.
.
Raines, Blair, Friedman, Krugman, Rich, etc. It can all be summed up rather simply: The NYT is only good for kindling and you can find cheaper and more environmentally friendly ways to light a fire in your fireplace.
I'm sorry – I realize I'm days late on this thread, but I want to thank all of you for 1) the reportage; 2) the comments. I came in here pretty down with the state of America, as per the "bravery" Mr. Obama has inspired in his party to lie, steal and cheat more money and America out of America, and your comments had me literally laughing out loud. I especially loved Cowboy logic's, "Howell Raines needs to be selling watermelons at a roadside fruit stand with Detective Dan Rather. They could crazy each other to death." Oh, my gosh – my stomach hurts from laughing so much!
