Remember when the Left was all in favor of free speech, no matter how offensive, in the belief that clarity emerged from conflict, that sunlight was the best disinfectant, and that brotherhood was possible only after we cleared away the barriers that divided us, instead of re-erecting them in the name of such contemporary shibboleths as “diversity?” Believe it or not, there was such a time.

Sorry, but Bruce's point is incredibly insipid and naive. I don't care how many times a boy is called a "fag" or "pussy" growing up, it always hurts. Words hurt, not because of the arrangement of the letters, but because of the insult intended. Black comedians have been liberally (no pun intended) using the word for decades, and I haven't noticed any change in how a black child takes it if a group of bullies comes up and uses the word.
The idea that saying a word thousands of times will make it impossible to insult someone with is disproved every day. Perhaps people abandoning the victim mentality could take some small amount of the sting out of it, but in the end insults will always hurt and to pretend otherwise is childish naivete. The only conclusion I can draw from this column is that, if in fact there were people shouting racist terms at our congressmen, you feel the need to defend them on the grounds of freedom of speech.
Its important to remember that the 1st Amendment protects free speech from being controlled/oppressed by the government only. Nobody on the left is arguing that such hateful or racist speech be outlawed. To renounce and condemn it is to merely practice the same right to freedom of speech.

I am really not clear what you are referring to about college campuses, which are some of the most open places for free speech by students of all views. I think the Right sees an abundance of left-wing ideas expressed by students at universities, but that's because the majority students at most colleges have left-leaning views! I have never heard of a University restricting the speech of its own students, except in cases of hate-speech, which is a concept that I think is appropriate only in VERY specific cases (purposely threatening/discriminatory/etc).
Let me just add that it is extremely disturbing that so many on the right are angry about the REACTION against those shouting racist slurs and spitting on an elected Senator. Are we forgetting who we are as a country? Since when is it inappropriate to condemn such vile behavior? It's depressing to see.

My household has never condoned name calling, and the children have grown up "color blind" as to ethnicity, and are educated and neutral on many different religions. They are not feminists nor chauvenists….as those too are "labels". But they have been called names, and insulted, and bullied at various times as a result of antisocial and inappropriate behavior of others. They have never felt a need to feel shame, guilt, embarassment, put down, or have any desire for revenge. They were raised by explaining to them that the world is filled with biggotry and ignorance, as well as with beauty and grace in education. They have been allowed to choose what behavior has the best consequences. They did not always get it right, but as college students today, they understand that leadership is given through examples, not by ranting or demanding rights or appologies. If they get angry, they know that their job is to work on righting a wrong, not to get even or to go fight over it. They also know when they are being taken advantage of, lied to, or ignored. They are unprepared to merely roll over and be victimized by their own goodness. Hiding from insults and pretending that just saying they are bad is not the same as working to make a better society and doing right by your friends and associates.
Generally, those that want to rescue the "victims" are those that believe they are themselves victims, having been abused, abandoned, or cheated, or bullied. Often they pass those fears and defenses on to their children and the pattern of indignation and anger is perpetuated. If one is at easy with themself, then taunts and verbal abuse is without power, and the need to rescue others is recognized as behavior seeking control and power over other people's actions….which merely serves to enable that of the "victim" to keep on being a victim without having to learn acceptance and self reliance.

He is either completely dishonest or he is an absolute imbecile to claim that this "evidence" is a legitimate basis for accusations of racism or violence. Watch the video and laugh at John's idiocy.
Even if we had NO proof of any such events, it is disgraceful to say those representatives are to blame for anything that even could have happened, off-camera (which is what anyone who has claimed "race-baiting" is saying).

What is to defend? The man was shouting to be heard in a crowd, at the Congresspeople who chose to march together linked arm in arm to demonstrate an arrogance against everyone that was in protest of the bill. They did this in hopes of getting SOME kind of incident to happen that they could point to and blame the other side for bad actions. When NOTHING happened, the guy that got some spittle on the Senator by ACCIDENT, was a perfect example as to how the Senator took the deal and made it what is was not. I do not defend spitting on anyone for any reason. I also do not defend a black senator that makes a spitting incident into a racial issue in order to take the moral highground instead of dealing with it like a man. I have been to sports events where the guy behind me spilled beer on me, and I do not drink. I assumed it to be an accident, and just dealt with it. This "senator" was part of a planned deal that they all brought into play in order to try to orchestrate an "incident" to detract from the incrediable cram down there did with this disgusting nation destroying bill. This took everyone away from was this the BEST bill that Could have been done if all had worked together….down to look like that those that disagreed were AGAINST them, instead of being against the bill and angry because Congress would not listen to them nor work with the other side on a cooperative basis for the good of the nation.
We ARE NOT UNITED AS A COUNTRY. We will NEVER be United as long as anyone uses and RACE RELIGION, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, GENDER, COLOR, EDUCATIONAL CREDENTIALS, WEALTH OR SOCIAL POSITION, OR JOB CLASSIFICATION as a fighting point against another "class" of people. Judging from your posts, I don't think there is anything I can say that could persuade you about this…but just one glaring example: Both of those women have repeatedly "warned" about Obama's "death panels."
While they are unquestionably intelligent, they openly and constantly speak only to push an agenda. In general, those are not qualities that colleges look for in speakers. (with exceptions of course, just last month Malkin came to NY to speak at NYU Law, the 4th-ranked law school in America.)

The truth is that the left engages in and agrees with "free speech" when it suits them. Kinda like rappers can call women "B****s and H**s" or calling their peers the "N word" without any repercussion except an explicit warning label on the album cover. Don Imus says "nappy headed" and the left calls him racist and asks for his resignation along with countless other attacks on anyone criticizing Obama and his agenda. Yet no one says anything when the tables are turned and someone attatcks a rich white man; because it's a "non issue".
The left is pushing this issue as though it actually happened because that's how they get their way in regards to issues dealing with race and justify everything from big government down to the poor grades earned in schools ran within democatic districts, "cause afterall, it's the white man that keeps them down". The right usually just backs down and lets it go.
Why doesn't someone ask Al Sharpton what his profession of choice will be when he retires from "race baiting".
I do see that the cop in the clip does not react, but it was widely reported that he was restrained and identified. Honestly, when I watch that video, I see what I can only describe as him getting spit-on. Maybe it was intentional/unintentional (you cannot convince it was a planned act). When passing the greatest legislative victory for the democratic party in decades (like it or not), it would seem really illogical for him to stage a spitting incident for "political hay."

Individual responsibility is of paramount importance, but there is responsibility to be had on the part of INSTIGATORS too. Where is the responsibility of those protesting at military funerals? I don't care if the protest is over gays in the military, or troops in Afghanistan or Iraq- protests do not belong at funerals, because emotions run high! Where was Al Sharpton's "responsibiluty" at Freddie's Fashion Mart? No one called him to account for the deaths in THAT incident.
The Left only holds conservatives to account. Never are they themselves accountable for anything. It's all "by any means necessary".

1) Go read Ezekiel Emanuel's paper on the "Complete Lives System" (it's online, free of charge).
2) Tell me, given MORE people enrolled in a healthcare system and (supposedly), healthcare costing individuals LESS MONEY, how this will equalize. (It WON'T)
3) Tell me, HOW decisions will be made regarding who gets allocated resources when there isn't enough for everyone. Who will make those decisions? (A panel will.) Of whom will that panel be comprised? Will they be ELECTED? (No.) Will they be appointed? (Yes.) By whom?
"Death panels" is hyperbole, but it describes the body which will be tasked with making care allocation decisions when there are not enough resources for everyone.
And, admitting you're a mindless slave is the first step in recognizing, acknowledging and then TREATING the problem.

3) Ok this is one argument I just cannot understand. Your concerned that there will not be enough healthcare for everyone, yet the primary accomplishment of this bill is that it greatly expands access to healthcare to those who currently cannot obtain it. Right now, the insurance companies are the ones rationing out healthcare, and they are making record-profits by cutting coverage from hundreds of thousands of people per year, while pricing out many others due to rising premiums. Under the new system, millions of people who were being denied healthcare will now have access. How do you reconcile a fear of rationed care from the new bill when now we have for-profit companies denying coverage for any preexisting condition and raising premiums by 30-40% annually (and some even more)?
There were no "hateful acts", other than that perpetrated by Congress when they acted against the people's wishes and spent a trillion more dollars on something the people didn't like and didn't want.
Great; so you're rooting for America to fail and keep right on with the spend, spend, spend and tax, tax, tax policies.

If you haven't noticed, the Left is notoriously divided compared to the right. There are constant battles across the left. For example, recently you could have heard many Democratic pundits/representatives arguing over positions from Stupak to Kucinich. That is why we have so much more trouble passing the legislation we want.
Also see Massa, Van Jones, Spitzer, Blagoyavich, all widely banished and renounced for there actions, and quickly.
In fact, many of us on the left have been frustrated at how quick we are to condemn our own. One example of this is ACORN, which, while there were serious questions raised, was completely cut from all funding and treated basically as a cancer before any serious investigation was completed, it was merely a cave-in to media pressure by wimpy Democratic representatives…all basically from a video of a few low-level employees acting inappropriate, but after a full investigation by state and federal law enforcement, no illegal activity was discovered. The point is, ACORN was cast-out immediately.

a) No, Medicare is actually smaller, only Medicaid is bigger.
b) Government-run insurance doesn't do the things I was "railing" on the private companies for, so why would I?
c) I am against awarding these "fat contracts" to connected pharma corps, but honestly, do I really care which "big pharma" company gets it? Maybe a little, but I don't lose sleep over it.
- This is the point when we reach the real philosophical divide. I (along with much of the left) do not think that our health care system should be primarily focused on profits. I think it should be focused on health. (Note: healthcare is the ONLY industry I feel this way about…there are many distinctions between healthcare and any other industry that demonstrate how healthcare does not work on free-market principles)
- The other side –> profits/efficiency/free-markets (before considering actual health)
