This is a great example of how freedom (of any kind) is lost. First a behavior or statement is observed, seen or heard. Second, someone or some group feigns offence. Third, out of fear or stupidity you capitulate.
Society has its own rules to handle obscene or offensive behavior or speech and it is rather effective and does not require a violation of free speech. If you don’t like what is being said or drawn don’t watch the show.

A huge Lenny Bruce fan since high school. I remember when the movie come out, it lit a fire in me. I found all the old albums I could , and read and re-read his biography. Saw some of his old performances that were filmed, down on the the West Bank of the U of M. He truly was a trailblazer, the Miles Davis of comedy for his era.
Today, he would weep for the cheap jokes, and vulgarity for the sake of vulgarity. After defending his First Amendment rights across the nation, (on his own dime, I might add) he would look at the PC nation that has been thrust upon us and roundly curse us for not having the spine to stand up against the oppressors. And he would be right to do so.
That doesn't make any sense on any level.

There are many ways to live life. Biting your tongue is not one of them. It is not to suggest that being hurtful is the same. It is not. Think of it as neutralizing stupidity. Sure some people tend to not like that approach. But who wants to surround themselves with people who need constant editing. Think a decade of Global Warming. (Boy talk about losing "friends")
Survival of the fittest. People like Lenny Bruce were on to it. Survival does not mean we sugarcoat or lie so everyone is feeling warm and fuzzy. The TRUTH sometimes HURTS. Ignoring the truth only makes the pain greater and later.
So this is where I shake the yogis, hippies, DailyKos et al who are confused about what 'survival of the fittest' means. (I'll try not to be rude) It is NOT "survival of the leanest" that make human nature persevere. The operative word is fit. When did fit and lean become confused I haven't a clue. No one is recommending a diet that starts at Crispy Cream. Fitness though means knowing that Global Warming computers models are as sound as Downey Savings' subprime mortgage business. Fitness is knowing that a wet-behind-the-ears lawyer from the hotbed of political corruption – Chicago – isn't the best way to lower the entry level standards for the most powerful office in the world.
I hope Lenny Bruce is smiling. America just took another step towards "fitness" with “Everybody Draw Mohammed Day.” The losers over at Comedy Central are lost in the plight to be "lean" and that is anything but survival.
I hope that Jon Stewart will defend the right of free speech for the Tea Party memebers with the same passion that he did for the rights of the South Park creators. Seems if you're a liberal, your have endless sympathy for people's rights. If you're a conservative, then you're a racist bigot who has to be silenced (for the good of the country, naturally). Perhaps Jon Stewart, the executives at Comedy Central, and all radical Muslim extremists should all go do something that's anatomically impossible to do. The guys in my unit use to start these arguments to pass the time on long transports, this was an argument we had on a hop from San Diego to Pearl to Subic Bay (the Air Force flight crew hated us before the coast was out of sight and two of the crew members got stuck with us all the way to the Philippines, poor bastards).

You know, I have to wonder about that and, as I get older and crankier, the more I start to think it was just another finger in the wind cynically political ploy. At the time, the largest untapped angry electorate was made up of young, irreverent types who wanted to be the antithesis of their parents and shocking (for the time) language was one way of doing that. Now, multiple minority groups are finding their political voice and offending them is done at great political peril.
Words have meanings and those meanings can cut deep. More important, though, is to be all things to all people which is what I see happening by those what are looking for new demographics to exploit.
And what would you suggest that I had used to make my point?
