That would be Ross Douthat of the New York Times, the center-right Op-Ed columnist who looks like Attila the Hun next to his allegedly conservative stablemate, the pathetic accommodationist, David Brooks. Writing about the most recent episode of South Park, which sought to elide post-9/11 proscriptions against joking about Islam by not depicting Mohammed, he writes:
These gimmicks then prompted a writer for the New York-based Web site revolutionmuslim.com to predict that Parker and Stone would end up like Theo van Gogh, the Dutch filmmaker murdered in 2004 for his scathing critiques of Islam. The writer, an American convert to Islam named Abu Talhah Al-Amrikee, didn’t technically threaten to kill them himself. His post, and the accompanying photo of van Gogh’s corpse, was just “a warning … of what will likely happen to them.”
This passive-aggressive death threat provoked a swift response from Comedy Central. In last week’s follow-up episode, the prophet’s non-appearance appearances were censored, and every single reference to Muhammad was bleeped out. The historical record was quickly scrubbed as well: The original “Super Best Friends” episode is no longer available on the Internet.

Sgt. York
Well, that’s America in 2010 — almost a full decade after we were attacked, we cower in fear of the people who attacked us; Sgt. York and Audie Murphy would be so proud. Why, it would be as if, after the attack on Pearl Habor in 1941, the country suddenly banned all depictions of the Japanese Emperor Hirohito, ceded Hawaii to the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere, and went on a prolonged sushi orgy.

Audie Murphy
Douthat continues:
In a way, the muzzling of “South Park” is no more disquieting than any other example of Western institutions’ cowering before the threat of Islamist violence. It’s no worse than the German opera house that temporarily suspended performances of Mozart’s opera “Idomeneo” because it included a scene featuring Muhammad’s severed head. Or Random House’s decision to cancel the publication of a novel about the prophet’s third wife. Or Yale University Press’s refusal to publish the controversial Danish cartoons … in a book about the Danish cartoon crisis. Or the fact that various Western journalists, intellectuals and politicians — the list includes Oriana Fallaci in Italy, Michel Houellebecq in France, Mark Steyn in Canada and Geert Wilders in the Netherlands — have been hauled before courts and “human rights” tribunals, in supposedly liberal societies, for daring to give offense to Islam.
But there’s still a sense in which the “South Park” case is particularly illuminating. Not because it tells us anything new about the lines that writers and entertainers suddenly aren’t allowed to cross. But because it’s a reminder that Islam is just about the only place where we draw any lines at all.
It’s easy to be “brave” when there are no consequences. But let some geek in a Virginia basement post a “veiled” threat on an obscure website and an entire counter-culture chucks its principles and heads for the nearest falafel stand to display its “sensitivity.”
This is what decadence looks like: a frantic coarseness that “bravely” trashes its own values and traditions, and then knuckles under swiftly to totalitarianism and brute force.
Happily, today’s would-be totalitarians are probably too marginal to take full advantage. This isn’t Weimar Germany, and Islam’s radical fringe is still a fringe, rather than an existential enemy.
For that, we should be grateful. Because if a violent fringe is capable of inspiring so much cowardice and self-censorship, it suggests that there’s enough rot in our institutions that a stronger foe might be able to bring them crashing down.
Meanwhile, what did Douthat’s colleague, the non best-selling author and failed showbiz wannabe, write about? Surely the former drama critic got down off his bash-the-right hobbyhorse to address an issue of vital cultural significance?
If Frank Rich doesn’t want to chime in, then feel free to add your thoughts on free speech here.

They wanted to push the envelope….you made your bed…
If this where Christ… hmm "BIG DEAL" whatever!
I can't believe Comedy Central totally dropped the ball on the Muhammad thing. What cowards. The rest of the cowards are in the rest of the media who were silent on it too. They are equally guilty of surrendering free speech to Sharia law.
We all need to make a stand now or we will regret it forever.
Perception is reality. The perception that American and world media generally leaves with the Jihadist of Islam is that we are ALL afraid of them.
Millions of us ARE NOT afraid of them, we would spit in their eye if confronted. What Comedy Central has done is to ENDANGER our freedoms even more than the "atmosphere of cooperation" the Obama Administration is fostering with it's missteps in the Middle East.
Wherre do we draw the line? A stupid looking kid witha sdtupid shaggy beard and a shower cap threatens an entire TV network and WINS? WTF?
From the man who gave us such memorable quotes such as:
"If presidents can't do it to their wives, they do it to their country. "
and
"Rhetoric does not get you anywhere, because Hitler and Mussolini are just as good at rhetoric. But if you can bring these people down with comedy, they stand no chance."
,as well as,
"Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die."
, the legendary Mel Brooks-"Bad taste is simply saying the truth before it should be said."
Michelle Obama made it quite clear in an early comment she made about being "ashamed of being an American." Obama continues the Obama family dysfunctional anti-American attitude overseas by apologizing to any and all world leaders about how bad America has been. All the while bowing and scraping before our enemies. How subservient he has made America appear. He welcomes our enemies through the front door of our country with open arms. Obama has himself stated that if push came to shove and if he had to make a choice, that choice would be for his muslim side. Look what he has done to Israel!! This country is in for a world of hurt that may be irreparable.
Thanks to the progressive movement(and the Obama administration) this nation no longer is exceptional and the world will be poorer for it.
While agreeing with what most of Douthat says, I have two nits to pick. First, Mohammed is not the only taboo left. Think "undocumented workers," for example. Or "civil rights legends" who hurl false accusations of racism. There is a whole host of politically correct sacred cows.
Secondly, if radical Islam is not yet an existential threat, it will be as soon as terrorists acquire nuclear weapons. Which could be any day now.
Has that Ali Booboo guy been arrested, or at least questioned yet. If not, why ? The feds arrested some guy in Washington State for threatening his US senator, why is this really any different ? Are the feds afraid of that billy-goat clone. Or do senators rate higher on the importance list that a couple of right leaning animators.
Audie Murphy actually told screenwriters to tone down the heroics he performed in the movie about his career in World War II, since he thought most moviegoers would find it unbelievable just how incredibly badass he was. For a pint-sized guy who had malaria for most of the war, he personified American exceptionalism.
Until some Islamic radicals blow up an abortion clinic the left will continue to cower. No big surprise here.
"…an entire counter-culture chucks its principles and heads for the nearest falafel stand to display its “sensitivity.”
That is some funny sh!t…
There is a decease at the core of our society, and it led to the election of the "Manchurian Candidate" regardless of the damage we knew he was going to do to America. This same decease is what makes some dispise our own country. Deny our exceptionalism. Project self-hate, and accept impositions from a backward satanic cult. Our loss of freedom of speech is not just now occurring to us because the muslims scare us. The Liberal/progressives have been working on us for a long, long time using political correctness as a tool. We have been conditioned to acquiesce, so as not to offend. But if we care to be free, we must offend and let the chips fall where they will.
If Muslims feel they must kill other Muslims for drawing a the face of Mohammed based on the Koran then that is their religion of Peace.
They need to understand that when they threaten others that are not of their faith then they must be the ones that pay the price, not others. We are not required to obey Shari it is not our law, it is for Muslims to obey. We will not submit!
I think I'll post this periodically as the topic's themes are appropriate. It is a lesson history teaches us that is disturbingly being repeated today by the MSM.
I'm currently reading "Citizens of London: The Americans Who Stood With Britain in its Darkest, Finest Hour," by Lynne Olson.
It covers the roles of journalists Edward R. Murrow, Eric Severeid, and US Ambassador to the UK, John Gilbert Winant in the years leading up to and through WWII.
What grabbed me was a description of the way the BBC reported to the Britons the news during the era of Neville Chamberlain, Britain's Prime Minister who infamously returned from Munich after appeasing Hitler and said the agreement with the Nazis to allow them to take over Czechoslovakia would ensure "peace in our time."
According to the book, the BBC refused to broadcast anything critical of the UK Government's actions during that era. It was nothing more than a mouthpiece for the government.
Additionally, apparently the BBC was the only source of broadcast news for Britain at that time.
Author Lynne Olson states that the Britons had no idea of the full picture, that they were spoon fed a compliant MSM's reports that were fed to it by the UK Government, and the government did not want to be criticized.
When Britain finally declared war on Germany, the Brit who took over the BBC reversed that practice and the "Beeb" finally started reporting the full facts, good and bad. After that, Winston Churchill got so exasperated with BBC that he called it "one of the neutral powers."
This is just a short synopsis of that part of the book, but anyone reading it would have to ask, "What would the Britons have done differently and what would they have demanded that their government do differently from 1937 to the start of the war if they had been able to get factual news instead of what amounted to nothing but propaganda from a UK government that was scared to death about what would happen if the public knew the real truth?"
I find strong parallels between that episode and the "conspiracy of silence" and the "conspiracy of the left" our own MSM engaged in during the 2008 elections and has continued since then. Our MSM's failure to do the same kind of rabid due diligence it practiced in demeaning Sarah Palin on the Democrat ticket gave us a distorted, unbalanced, and, in my opinion, a deceitful picture of the range of candidates running for the Presidency, not to mention for Congressional office.
With deranged dictators emerging in the world with nuclear weapons within their grasp, it will amount to high treason if our MSM does not do its utmost to dig out the truth and let the facts fall where they may. The American public has a sacred right to be well-served by the media when the possibility of nuclear war is rising on the horizon.
I sincerely hope those of you who may read this check out this book and other sources that will describe truthfully how the BBC betrayed Britons by deliberately failing to report the full truth about the events that dragged Europe into that horrible war.
God help us if we do not have full information with which we can form rational decisions when voting for our leadership.
"Because if a violent fringe is capable of inspiring so much cowardice and self-censorship, it suggests that there’s enough rot in our institutions that a stronger foe might be able to bring them crashing down."
To bring our rotting institutions down and bankrupt the United States has been Osama bin Laden's declared strategy. While bin Laden may want to build a Muslim world upon the corpse of the United States, the Obama Leftists are apparently executing the very same strategy in Cloward-Piven to their Marxist-based ends. Obama, not Osama, is currently in the lead of that race…
For what it's worth, which isn't much I was in London last summer and after messin' around in London all day I went back to chill and wath the "tele". You have BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, BBC….The radio is BBC1, BBC2, BBC3…..
I think there was a competeing channel of two, it was too mind numbing to watch, competetive cooking, soccer talk shows (?) rugby, and cricket (which is kinda cool, in a weird way) American "Kojack" reruns, CSI Las Vegas from 10 years ago…etc, Solution? Head off to the pub mate!
Slightly off topic and Mr. Walsh's indulgence – I was just checking out a new network (cable I presume) coming this summer with many famous conservatives involved it seems. Kelsey Gramer is the front man it seems and I do believe I saw "Big" Man and contributor Andrew Claven go!
Check out the web site @
You mean Michelle my Belle, that lousy bitch who got a no show $350,000+ a year job handed to her for no reason (they didn't fill the job when she left), the cretin who wants an obesity strategy (to aid her buds in the SEIU), the idiot who forgot to plant cotton in her garden?
The creep who sat in Wright's church for 20 years with her worthless cockroach husband?
What does it say about her that she would marry such a low life? She has perhaps even less character than he does, as she knows what a scumbag he is and yet she hooked up with him, no doubt in order to line her own pockets.
Mohammad was a political general, bloody tyrant, a murderer, a false prophet, and a pedophile. Nothing more. But what he spawned is Satanic culture where death is life. They have not yet done their worst, but will be permitted to continue their reign of horrors as long as they have the useful idiots of the western Left.
They filmed that move, ' To Hell and Back', at the Yakima Firing Center, about 15 miles from where I grew up.
Yes Ma'am,
You nailed it. Great post. I'd forgotten the pedophile part…
The Quran (AKA Koran, etc…) is a manual on how to congure and enslave the lower (not my word, theirs) peoples, specifically Jews and Christians.
The Libs are voluntarily taking dhimmitude upon themselves because they feel they deserve it or some other idiotic western guilt BS. They are totally complicit.
Yes, a Satanic culture where death is life and a sex fest with 70 virgins awaits you in heaven for being so pious.
They are not so stupid as they seem at South Park.
What they did in pulling every mention and word regarding Mohammad from the production added an even more potent message then Stone and Parker could have depicted in a single program.
What was originally Mohammad in a bear suit turned into a reminder of what Islam really is.
A fist, a sword and an evil blight. It should be outlawed. But our constitution forbids us from making any law respecting an establishment of religion.
"a pint-sized guy"
Recruiters turned him down repeatedly because he was "too small." It ain't the size of the dog in the fight …
Muslims no longer have to knock down our buildings, they simple knock down our self-respect and pride. How? Merely the threat seems to be enough. Makes you want to, well, I don't know, put Mohammed on a t-shirt(the epitome of Western culture) and make some money off his face. No comments necessary. No little slogans with arrows saying I'm not with stupid – I am stupid. Or Hey little girl, want some candy and a new husband? Nothing required – just his face.
South Park is a skidmark on the underwear of society and it's creators are nihilistic tools that have grown wealthy defecating on everything and everyone they choose. If South Park and the d-bags that created it disappeared tomorrow I don't think we will have lost anything of value.
But, this is a fight that goes beyond South Park.
This is a fight against an ideology that will murder millions if given the opportunity. South Park is just the current target of Islam and we must defend the freedoms that allow South Park to exist or we will all cease to exist.
[...] aside a few moments out of your helter-skelter lives to read Walsh’s article reprinted in full below, and then definitely take the time to read Ross Douthat’s [...]
I ask you. What are we going to do about it?
What are WE going to do about it? Fall back on our heels or get proactive? It seems the only sanctuary for people who think like us is right here. November is a long way away and we have a lot of work to do.
Thank you for your contribution. The time to get proactive is behind us yet we still stare at the line in the sand.
Time to cross the line? No. Stomp it.
South Park should move to FX, where they still push the envelope without fear.
Frank Rich has the courage of a centipede. He'll hide in your pillow and sting you when you are sleeping. Otherwise that POS just hides behind the Weak Old Party….the DNC. They are nothing but a bunch of punk arse freakin cowards.
Long Live South Park. Go pay per view boys…you got my dough in a heartbeat.
Stand tall and fight for our rights. To he** with sharia, muhammad and all the islam or muslim fanatics. This is America! If you don't like it, get the he** out of OUR country!!
I believe that's what we're doing right now on this virtual public forum. Being heard.
Hey, I was usually picked last for dodge ball and I rocked at it.
Since I was small, I'd slowly ease my way up till I was standing next to the gym teacher. No one on the other side would dare throw a ball anywhere near him. Then when the balls bounced off the wall back to the other side, I'd run out and knock them back to our side.
I'm pretty sure the NYPD has got their eyes on him right now.
I find it highly ironic that what these radical fundamentalists hate most about America is the lack of morals on the left. They're against pretty much everything Hollywood claims to support.
This tip-toeing is creating an anger in my mind, that wasn't there before. I never really had anything against muslims before, as a class. As time goes by, and more murder and carnage takes place,…. and there is no muslim outrage, I see it as acceptance. Muslims expect and condone violence within their ranks and from their fringe…. especially when directed at non-muslims. This rationally leads me to have an increasingly dim view of all muslims.
THIS is how racism starts and though I am aware of it growing within me, my anger at them grows and my desire to restrain my general disgust is diminished. I cannot be alone.
The more the MSM cowers in fear, and the more the Islamic community accepts these threats and acts, the more the great majority of us will abandon our unbiased positions and start to lean into a defensive mode.
Same goes for illegal aliens; Chicago politics, environmental weenies screaming about AGW. How many others are slowly losing the desire to give the benefit of the doubt, to respect their position, to be able to shake at the end of the day and agree to disagree. These folks are playing to win…. and their vision of winning is the destruction of the USA as we recognize it. I know… I sound kooky now. See how it works?
I'm the kook; they're all normal. MSM meme …
i love the fact that they don't have a problem with South Park showing Jesus crapping on the American Flag and Pres. Bush, but we can't offend any Muslims.
Allah forbid!
Cartoonists—generally a rowdy lot—are not taking this lying down. Last Sunday Chris Muir's "Day by Day" net strip parodied Muhammad eating a BLT and drinking a Spaten Brau at a deli, accompanied by his 9 year-old 4th wife, and May 20th has been declared "Cartoon Muhammad Day" by a Washington State editorial cartoonist, encouraging all of her colleagues to do a panel or a strip depicting his image as a protest of the Cartoon Network's censoring the "South Park" episode.
We've become a nation of whining wussboys. Thanks a lot, Feminism!
Rush and Beck should unleash withering daily assaults on all Muslims. One good "chalk talk" from Beck should convince them we Americans are clearly too crazed to be messed with. If that doesn't work, some of ElRushboo's patented "I am the smartest man….EVER." spiel, with some Neilson ratings graphics alongside, will definitely do the trick.
Better yet, maybe Sarah Palin could address a Tea Party rally with a burkha on, equipped, naturally with a hole for a bendy straw. Some red high heels and a propeller cap would be nice, too.
I Standup for Freedom 4 nights a week going on 39 weeks. I have received 2 veiled threats but in my state a criminal threat can only be pursued under certain criteria; one being I would have to show fear by stopping my Standing. I haven't, so no crimal complaint is possible. But maybe the writters can in their state. Just saying
You have to wonder about the shoe being on the other foot. What would be the reaction of Muslim militants to beheaded bodies of "offended" Muslim militants turning up in the streets, replete with notes attached to their chests with daggers?
Inquiring minds, and all that…
"disease", dude. "decease" is something entirely different.
I like the way you put that. Unfortunately over-sensitivity and forced acceptance does eventually breed racism…excellent comment.
It's obvious why Muslims do not permit any questioning, debating, or ridiculing of their faith. It cannot stand up to the scrutiny. Only by threatening all who oppose it with death, they successfully garner the support of those who either have no faith or a weak faith.

"All the while bowing and scraping before our enemies" Since when is Japan, China and Saudi Arabia our enemies? It's traditionally in these cultures to bow. You are really reaching Barb.
" How subservient he has made America appear" yeah cuz nothing makes you look subservient like sending another 30,000 soldiers to continue occupying foreign countries.
"Obama has himself stated that if push came to shove and if he had to make a choice, that choice would be for his muslim side" Are you really that stupid Barb? Either you have no ability to check facts or you deliberately spread lies. I'm not sure which is worse. Here is the actual quote from the book:
"In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific assurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction." And I will stand with them too. Do you understand what he is saying here Barb or do I need to paraphrase it for you?
"Look what he has done to Israel!!" Uh, what did he do to Israel? Do you have facts or more invented BS?
"This country is in for a world of hurt that may be irreparable." Baby, we been in a world of hurt for sometime now…
Although moderate Muslims are rightly claiming that not all Muslims are terrorists and people should not lump them together, it is the moderate Muslims that enable the fanatics to continue their atrocities, by sticking to all sorts of backward and debilitating Islamic rules. Because moderates want the same thing as the fanatics: world wide Sharia as ordered by the Quran. Moderates will never take a stand against Muslim terrorists, but only enable them to usher in the implementation of Sharia. The term moderate Muslims is very deceiving as there is no moderate Islam. Don't let yourself get fooled.
Muslims will never negotiate anything to do with their religion, a religion that btw dictates ALL aspects of life, as this cannot be done because they consider the Quran as the final word of God.
There is and never will be a middle way between the Free West and Islam and Muslims claiming to be true Muslims and fully fledged US citizens are lying through their teeth.
I sea.
