Credit where credit is due: in this case, this story by Steven Erlanger of the New York Times:
PARIS — Across Western Europe, the “lifestyle superpower,” the assumptions and gains of a lifetime are suddenly in doubt. The deficit crisis that threatens the euro has also undermined the sustainability of the European standard of social welfare, built by left-leaning governments since the end of World War II.
Europeans have boasted about their social model, with its generous vacations and early retirements, its national health care systems and extensive welfare benefits, contrasting it with the comparative harshness of American capitalism.

Heartbreaking, I know. But then, social-welfare systems were actually affordable for a while when the U.S. a) was reconstructing their countries with the Marshall Plan and b) providing American troops and U.S. nukes to shield Europe from the hungry Soviet bear throughout the eighties and nineties. Hey — it’s easy to be a “lifestyle superpower” when you don’t have anything better to do:
Europeans have benefited from low military spending, protected by NATO and the American nuclear umbrella. They have also translated higher taxes into a cradle-to-grave safety net. “The Europe that protects” is a slogan of the European Union.
But all over Europe governments with big budgets, falling tax revenues and aging populations are experiencing rising deficits, with more bad news ahead.
With low growth, low birthrates and longer life expectancies, Europe can no longer afford its comfortable lifestyle, at least not without a period of austerity and significant changes. The countries are trying to reassure investors by cutting salaries, raising legal retirement ages, increasing work hours and reducing health benefits and pensions.
I don’t want to spoil the fun by listing the bad news; that’s Erlanger’s job. But having lived in Europe for a good deal of my life, let me just say this news doesn’t exactly comes as a shock to those of us who spent many hours being lectured in Parisian cafes, German beer gardens, English and Irish pubs, Hungarian nightclubs and Russian gangster hangouts about the superiority of the European way of life over the savagery of the States.
There are lots of reasons the Euro-fantasy is coming to an end, but here’s the biggest one:

According to the European Commission, by 2050 the percentage of Europeans older than 65 will nearly double. In the 1950s there were seven workers for every retiree in advanced economies. By 2050, the ratio in the European Union will drop to 1.3 to 1.
“The easy days are over for countries like Greece, Portugal and Spain, but for us, too,” said Laurent Cohen-Tanugi, a French lawyer who did a study of Europe in the global economy for the French government. “A lot of Europeans would not like the issue cast in these terms, but that is the storm we’re facing. We can no longer afford the old social model, and there is a real need for structural reform.”
Remember — this is the future Obama and the Democrats want for us, too.
Good night, and good luck.

Socialism is and always will be doomed to fail. It gives incentives for taking from the government but no incentive to produce and give into that pool. If BHO and the progressives are not stopped Americans will soon find out first hand the pitfalls of socialism.

Too bad Oba-Mao and his thugs won't read it…
…and if they do read it they won't understand it…
…Because they are WAY Smarter than those others who tried it, and they have secret magical powers…
BINGO!
Socialists are doomed to suck. Pathetic creatures tethered to the government teat.
Someone owing their existence to strangers-via the nameless/faceless government monster that is socialism. Eventually you bread a culture of entitled spoiled brats that don't want to work, don't have any desire to contribute to the well being of the society as a whole, and don't want to reproduce-because of the high tax rates and it cuts into your personal time. Eventually leaving you WITHOUT OTHER PEOPLES' MONEY to prop the sham of a system up.
Europe-Good luck with the riots this summer!
BHO and his group/regime do not care what happens there, they will fix the problems so it does not happen here. Right!
As long as THEY own/run everything all will be OK. Just like the Venezuelans!!
My Goodness, If the NYT is saying this it must be 100 times what they are reporting. Don't you know it just KILLED them to have to tell the unwhitewashed truth?
so basically Obama & Co. want to replay a game that a big chunk of the world has already played and LOST, big. since they're incredibly corrupt, dishonest, arrogant, etc., but not abjectly stupid, what are they up to? is Venezuela their real model? Argentina? Zimbabwe?
somebody needs to remake the movie War Games, but instead of the WOPR computer playing Global Thermonuclear War, it learns to play Global Socialist Suicidal Stupidity . the big climactic finale in the war room can show the world exploding in red ink & blood as country after country collapses in debt and violence.

I'm sure there will be a government program to help Mr. Erlanger with his Post-Socialism Stress Syndrome.
The "gray lady" is after all a business. In spite of its liberal leanings it has discovered it cannot sustain a business model based upon good intentions. They too have had to lay off people due to economic downturn, they just don't accept the fact their readership is moving away due to a pitiful product. When a business continually ignors the primary sucessful formula of giving a customer what they want rather than what you think they need, failure will be the outcome. The MSM cannot candy-coat what is occuring in Europe, the case study has just been completed on the Socialist experiment in post WWll Europe, again abject failure. I think it was Albert Einstein who defined insanity as repeating the same thing over and over again expecting a different outcome. Seems we have a bunch of loons loose in the Whitehouse wanting to try the experiment again.
What is most shocking is that Obama and his socialist progressives aren't listening. For them, it's "damn the torpedoes; full speed ahead!" This is not mere arrogant blindness. This is COMPLICITY! It is INTENT to destroy!
The New York Times…well behind the curve. At least the Times is doing the job of informing the people who don't already know all this – meaning what's left of their current readership. Mark Steyn's America Alone came out what, two years ago?
New York Times…will it have a conversion on its deathbed?
Oh my god, somebody actually figured it out. It is a miracle.
Too bad nobody will listen.

The culture of entitlement is not fiscally sustainable, whodathunk it? I mean aside from anyone with a basic understand of economics, like the ability to balance a checkbook, or check a debit card balance. It will be interesting, and humorous to see the liberal responses to this one.
As socialism collapses under it's own weight in Europe, I wonder how countries like France and Italy will look in the future. Then suddenly I figured it out. I just imagined how tawdry and pathetic Paris Hilton would behave if she suddenly became completely broke. Oh sure, it's tawdry and pathetic now, but she only gets away with it because of her wealth. But once that's gone, yikes!
Capitalists can exsist without the social/Commuists. The socialist need the capitalist to exsist inorder to steal from the capitalists. If everything was socialism(communism) there would be no one to steal from! THE CAPITALIST DOESN"T REQUIRE THE SOCIALIST. THE SOCIALIST CAN NOT SURVIVE WITHOUT THE CAPITALISTS! CONFIRMEDDEAD.COM Proud capitalists stop support them people, don't do business with them, they are out to enslave you to their good intentions!
Since the demographics will no longer support the socialist dream we now see the real purpose of Health Care Reform. It was enacted to adjust the demographics to a more supportable ratio of workers to retired people.

I worked with international relations in a business and America is the most hard working, driven accomplishing people I know. They do not accept the norm they break barriars, find solutions and get excited about life and its opportunity. Internationaly the working people are, compared to US, very lazy, slothful and very dull and lacking hope. The very God given right to work, Bible, is what makes someone alive. By the sweat of our brow.
Socialism is parasitic in nature, and when the host (capital) dies, so does everyone else.
Europe! Have you listened/seen to our teenagers and twenty-somethings here, they are all about "Why can't I have a job like yours Dad" right out of school.
Idiology has no checkbook, balance sheet or business plan. The price is paid on the backs of the masses (that would be us). Social Justice is what they want and if THE END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS then anything is game.
Europe may well burn in the next year or so. Even if it doesn't the EU is going to die as Germany realizes that the French pulled a fast on one them and get's out. If the world economy get's worse then Europe is doomed as the US military pulls out of Europe and they have to pay to defend themselves (Something only Germany has been able to do for over 100 years) against the Russians and the middle east. The middle eastern communities in Europe will go up in flames first and the overreaction by the Gov's will incite more and the death spiral begins.
YOU ALWAYS RUN OUT OF OTHER PEOPLES MONEY! What is so hard to understand about this simple fact!? There isn't a single example of any type of Socialist model succeeding yet we still have people so oblivious that they will fight to put their own country on a gauranteed track to failure! Individualism and personal responsibility made us the greatest country on earth and collectivism and the entitlement mentality will bring it all crashing down…if it's not corrected we are either doomed or there will be a revolution in this country to reinstate its values and principles.
so be prepared for the comming shit storm from the MSM of the REQUIREMENT OF NEW HIGHER TAXES ON THE WEALTHY.
OH and by the way–everyone with a non-public union job is declared to be "THE WEALTHY."
NEW FEES ON EVERYTHING AND A VALUED ADDED TAX (VAT) IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER.
THANKS ALOT STUUPPIIDDDDD DEMOCRATS AND FUCKING RINO'S.
PLEASE STOP VOTING OR DIE OFF!!!!
No s**t Dick Tracy, have you finally got the clue? Governments exist for a number of reasons, but re-distribution of income is not, or should not, be among them. Government should sustain, through taxes, programs such as national defence, roads and other services that cannot be regulated through market (e.g., competitive) pressure. To finance such prograks, it is a legitimate activity for government to concern itself with the growth, not the distribution, of wealth. One way to increase revenues without increasing tax rates would be a tax on expenditures which do not contribute to increased wealth. Perhaps it is easier to identify the expenditures that do contribute to the growth of wealth, and thus should be exempt from taxes. These be but three; health care, for one needs be healthy to be productive, education.. same rationale, and investment, a.k.a. savings. Let us call for a high flat tax on all income except that spent on these 3 catagories. This should receive support from all who seek equity without consideration for aly soecialo interest. Please forward your comments, suggestions, and criticism to me, and how you can help make this happen. tbeebe6535 (at) yahoo (dot) com
Please excuse my typos: aly should read any, prograks should be programs, socielo should be special. Now WRITE ME WHAT YOU THINK!
The thing to remember about hard core modern leftists like the President and his thugs is this is not about making life better for all the citizens.
It's about making it easier for them to control the population.
Maybe this is it.
It can be fiscally sustainable, if the only thing they want sustained is their cushy jobs at the very top of the gut pile.
Rome burned, but Nero was still living high on the hog.
Oh yeah, it was to cover the politicians asses on both sides of the aisle as Medicare/Medicaid go broke.
As someone who was openly derided as a "breeder" when I lived in L.A. with my wife (at the time) amd my ONE child (at the time), I fear that there are still too many Americans that either don't get it, or actually wish to see this come to pass.
Really. Last week on NPR they were interviewing European economists and politicians concerning Greece.
And I am not making this up. One guy actually said the problem with the EU is there is no mechanism for transferring wealth from richer member nations to poorer ones.
Yeah, that's the ticket, more socialism.
Limited socialism can work, but it requires a small country with an extremely homogeneous population. And even at that the best it can do is limp along.
A libertarian friend passed this along to me this morning.
They could call this literally Economics For Idiots.
It does not matter of Obama and his thugs read it or understand it. They plan on being the oligarchs, or lackies to the oligarchs, and thus be immune.
It's the average citizen who needs to read and understand, and I doubt they will do either.

it would also have to be extremely limited in what it provides in the way of benefits- retirement age, healthcare, wages, vacation, etc. anything more lavish than a minimal subsistence level with realistically high retirement ages (say 90-95% of life expectancy), very basic medical, housing, etc., is doomed from the start. in other words, the plan would have to discourage participation by virtue of its relatively low quality of life- not encourage massive over-subscription, which is what we see in practice, because that's what wins votes/elections. it's tough to outbid Santa…
That's why you need such a highly homogeneous population, because the vast majority of people have to be on board.
Last year there was an article in Reason magazine about some European city that was sort of pulling it off, sort of. I can't remember the city they looked at, I think either Amsterdam or some other city, where they kind of were pulling it off. But the population was about 98% native.
It can be done, it ain't pretty, but it can be done.
Errr… have the people who derided you as a "breeder" ever asked themselves where they expect the next generation to come from? Or perhaps more importantly to them, where their social security welfare money would come from?

Socialism stops working when you run out of other people's money.

A group of vampires can't survive by stealing each other's blood.
We all know socialism is a failed experiment.
That's why we have a unhampered free-market capitalist economy in USSA. Never mind that the government owns 50% of the mortgages in the country, and will soon own your healthcare plans too.
Just don't make a purchase over $600 for your business or you will have to file form 1099 with the IRS (a new law that came with the healthcare bill).
They only hate us because of our freedoms.

I agree that the European way of life has been preserved because of America protecting it, but the final reason you state at the end for it ending (age distribution of population) is being seen in almost every country in the world. Even here in America – and the government's nothing to do with that!
