George Stephanopoulos’s “interview” with James O’Keefe and Andrew Breitbart on this morning’s Good Morning America summed up everything that is wrong with institutional American journalism. No doubt it is even now speeding its way over to the Newseum for permanent enshrinement in the Hall of Shame.
First, the very fact that a partisan hack like Stephanopoulos is actually employed by ABC News is a disgrace in itself. In the old days of “real journalism,” PR men and political operatives found no welcome in a newsroom: they were considered far too tainted by their flackery to ever be credible as independent reporters or newsgatherers. And yet here is “Steffi,” one of the architects of Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign and star of The War Room, segueing smoothly from blind loyalty to his impeached boss, to the author of a more-in-“sorrow”-than-in-anger tell-all, semi-mea-culpa memoir (for which he was paid $2.75 million), All Too Human: A Political Education, to prime spots in the ABC pantheon.

Is that all it takes — a quick, highly remunerative sheep-dip memoir, accompanied by a few bogus crocodile tears — to transform an apparatchik into a newsman?
But this is our culture today: cheap second-hand celebrity, such as Stephanopoulos’s, has come to replace accomplishment, and its kissing-cousin, access, has been substituted for integrity. You just know that if ABC couldn’t get Bill Clinton then Steffi was the next best thing, the same way CNN hired James Carville and Paul Begala, although with not quite the same breathtaking audacity of dope.
Worse, it is also modern journalism’s culture. As a writer at Time Magazine, I was there in the eighties when the celebrity-news ecosphere shifted from Time’s telling which Hollywood celebrities it was going to put on its cover, to the celebrities’s flacks telling Time. When my back-of-the-book colleagues Kurt Andersen and Graydon Carter left Time to start Spy, they created a brilliant parody of mid/late-eighties American culture, including the slavish cult of celebrity. What they didn’t realize was that they were also creating the new template for journalism itself – one that Carter has ridden all the way to a long-running and successful editorship of Vanity Fair. The joke has become its own punchline.
So the very notion of Stephanopoulos sitting in the GMA chair and lecturing O’Keefe about being a partisan has got to be somebody’s idea of a gag.
The GMA interview – ostensibly to discuss O’Keefe’s latest round of sting videos, this time involving the current U.S. Census — doesn’t start with the Census, of course. Instead, it helpfully begins with this question from Steffi to O’Keefe:
First, let’s set the record straight — you did commit a crime, correct?
The reference is to O’Keefe’s recent guilty plea for entering a federal building in New Orleans under false pretenses as he and three friends attempted to investigate why Louisiana senator Mary Landrieu’s staff was claiming their phones were out of order – when in fact, they simply didn’t want to take the heat their constituents were handing out.
Now, if entering a federal building under false pretenses were really a crime, then just about every member of the current Congress would have to plead guilty to the charge. But, passing that, once free, O’Keefe then spoke from the court house steps, promising to continue his undercover investigative work.
You sounded pretty defiant on the steps of the court — do you think you did anything wrong…? Would you do it again? You’d commit a crime?
Did somebody say defiant? Now this is defiant:
The former paid political activist masquerading as a newsman, Stephanopoulos, then starts hammering O’Keefe for being… a political activist.
You crossed the line – critics say you’re more of a political activist.
And he just won’t let go. In his effort to character-assassinate O’Keefe, Stephanopoulos practically waves his opposition research in O’Keefe’s face, tossing around not only these charges but the basest one of all, “racism” – “your critics says you’re animated by resentment over race” — even though that calumny has been thoroughly debunked.
O’Keefe valiantly keeps his temper and makes his points about the legitimacy of undercover journalism:
Journalists have been doing this forever. It’s not a left or right thing, it’s about exposing corruption… speaking truth to power. When you stand up to power – people are going to come after you… this is not about me. They’re not going to stop us with character assassination. When you stand up to powerful individuals they’re going to try to destroy you… we’re creating a movement.
Oddly, at this moment Stephanopoulos retreats and notes that he “was one of the few, if not the only journalist who asked president Obama about [the ACORN] case… I did cover it, I did ask.” Then he asks O’Keefe to once more aver that he’s not going to break the law again.
Finally, with just a few minutes left in the interview, Stephanopoulos gets around to discussing the new Census tapes. Whoops! Time to go!

"Stephy" Stephanopoulos is the ultimate INSIDER parading as an "objective journalist" – and he's getting away with it.
Like we need MORE evidence that the government and the national (i.e. state controlled) media are inextricably linked by ideology – now they're eagerly swapping personnel and ideas. "Stephy" was a pioneer – he "transfered over" from the Clinton Criminal Cabal awhile back – new recruits are arriving in waves.
How can the people of the United States of America TRUST the "Main Stream Media" to keep a objective and vigilant eye on government when they ARE (of technically were) the leftist government? Answer – they can't.
Prediction: They will REDISCOVER their teeth and "investigative skills" next January as a GOP Congress is seated and the re-election of Obama begins. They've been toying with Sarah Palin – they're just warming up the bus.
There is an almost LITERAL exodus of media types INTO the federal government. Dreams of little J-school grads COME TRUE – well paying "gob'mint jobs" with less pressure and less expectations and way better job security. They're poster boys and girls for Cloward-Piven Strategy run amok.
i don't think old georgie knows exactly what a activist is, and what a journalist is. a journalist is not what george is, and activist is not quite what james is. although james does tell stories embarassing to the left, he does not add editorial comments to his work, he lets the idiots do all the talking, it just so happens all the idiots seem to be leftists just doing what they think is right. and most people on tv these days are just talking heads. some of them need a teleprompter to do their job, like ann over at nbc, and barak.
I wish Mssrs. Breitbart and O'Keefe would have responded to Steponallofus' accusations by saying,
"You? You're calling me a political activist?"
I know Breitbart and O'Keefe didn't do it because they're too smart and also have the benefit if being correct on this issue.
Welcome to Big Journalism, everybody.
Sounds to me like a great new motto for Big Journalism as the NY Times sinks into oblivion.
All the news.
He may not know, but what he does know is how to read a political score card, who's playing on what team. And that's all that matters to these people.
Bravo, Mr. Walsh. This is the deconstruction of the "interview" that I was looking for: a real journalist whapping Steffi upside the head for posing as one.
The interview was a joke and the interviewer is a hack. AB came out of it all right, but O'Keefe had his hair mussed a bit.
Unlike some others on these threads, I don't think this appearance helped our side. How many independents who don't follow this stuff all that closely watched it? Hundred thousand? More? And how many of them could even begin to know that this was a drive-by, and why?
What I'm saying is, step outside yourself in a situation like this, forget you're a political junkie, and imagine you're apolitical Sarah Housewife who tunes into GMA partly because Georgie is cute. Well, Mrs. Housewife very possibly came away from those ten minutes thinking that James O'Keefe is a little shady.
I don't think the exposure was worth it. I hope I'm wrong.
Michael Walsh, you make it sound like the leftist media and leftist politicians are in bed together. If that was true, sir, then wouldn't I have heard about it in the media? Oh, wait…
Nicely done as usual.
this reminds one of the famous line thrown at Snufflelufagus when the rat jumped off the sinking USS Clinton…
He went to ABC and immediately distanced himself from his former employers. Who in turn said instead of being a
Commentator, he was a: 'Common Traitor'. Such is the lot of the left; anything other than total fealty is apostasy, and must be treated with hostility. He has since come nicely back to the fold…

When Stephi asked James if he would do it again, I wanted James to say "well, would you break the law again?"
Well George should know since he himself is no Journalist.
George is the leftist hack disguised as a moderate.
Like Obama calling on Major Garrett last, at the presser in the previous week, so he can blow him off and end the farce and run away like the little bitch he is……
Steffi shakes the coconut tree on O'Keefe so long, the actual subject they were there to discuss can not be broached, as in…"Sorry, gentleman, that's all the time we have….Perhaps next time we can discuss the importance of the census"
OKay….
BTW Next up is a "world" constitution. It's been in the making since about 1901 or thereabouts. Actually it was only "talked" about starting around that time frame. It was Woodrow Wilson who actually tried to introduce it back around 1917, it's been mentioned SEVERAL times since then. If anyone is interested all you have to do is go to google books and type in "world constitution". You'll find a TON of references to it. Not surprising is the fact that it is the same time frame that the progressives started introducing everything else into society, it's been a gradual process, socialism, one world government, re-written history, school curriculum changes etc. BTW the term "one world government" started around the same time frame, so it's been in the works/plans for a LONG time also. George Bush 1 is just the first person to come out and say it publicly.
Mind you, Steffy was a colleague of Clinton hitman and smear-merchant supreme Sid 'Vicious' Blumenthal- father of that Max Blumenthal who fabricated the "racist" slander against O'Keefe.

So sick of the Clinton hacks. Peter Pan (George S.) on ABC, Skeletor (James C.) and the five-head (Paul B.) on CNN. Andrea Mitchell on MSNBC is also a cheerleader. They are not legitimate journalists.

O'Keefe is an activist, and I have no problem with that. He only goes after corruption on the Left, which is absolutely his prerogative. It doesn't make him any less of a journalist, but he's not a neutral one (since he investigates groups that disagree with his personal philosophies).
Stephanopoulos is a piece of crap, though, and deserves to be smacked around for his previous partisan behavior. Unfortunately, when people get on his show they are so anxious to plug their work that they don't want to waste their precious time calling him out.
Maybe George is working on the old premise that "it takes one to know one" and he thinks he see's himself in James O'Keefe.
He'd be wrong about that, but maybe, just maybe that's what he's thinking.
Progressive activist(s) Clinton(S) and Stephanopoulos try to portray O'Keefe as the savage, the uncivilized opponent of the new "Religion" of the all knowing Agendists/Narrators of Life as it should be accepted (According to them), It enriches them with your WEALTH!!!
I wonder what "Little Man" Georgie knew about the Clinton/Lewinsky affair and when did he know it?
Who cares what James is? He's doing what NO ONE else is doing. Great work!
Since when have journalists ever been neutral? I would argue –never. That's a myth that journalism schools and their graduates have been perpetuating for decades. No such thing. Journalists decide what facts to show/report all the time and which to ignore. Personally, I don't care if so-called journalist have a political bent. I just wish they'd stop acting like they don't.
It's always bothered me that george got that position at ABC.
It just shows you what a waste getting a college degree really is most of the time especially if you long for the spot light. Thousands of kids go to college because they want to work in broadcasting. This guy worked for an impeached president and he gets a free pass. Didn't have to earn it.
Sometimes it's hard to be clever when you're in the spot light.
O'Keefe is just doing the work most progressives can't, don't and won't do. That is expose the corruption within our current administration. Great job. Keep it up, but watch your back. There's a big bulls eye there for the socialists' slings and arrows.

Damn activists. What is a hoe to do?
O'Keefe exposes corruption. If Republicans think they're safe from O'Keefe and those of a like mind, they are sadly mistaken. It has nothing to do with party, he's just taking the road less traveled.
Steph is a hack. He has always been a self-aggrandizing hack. He sits there and nods while Democrats lie. It's pathetic yet typical of today's "news" media.

This piece is another excellent, well-reasoned critique from the "pen" of Michael Walsh.
Thank you, kind sir, for taking the time to get it right.

**FORMER** hack???????
2 sides of the coin? one works to cover up corruption and the other to expose it…
I don't fault them for not being clever. I don't fault them at all actually.
In my opinion Breitbart and O'Keefe handled themselves well, it's just the juvenile in me wanted to see a D-bag like Stephanopoulos called out for the fraud he is.
Stephanopoulos- this is the "Unbiased" journalist – the one who never followed up when Obama voiced his "my Muslim faith" comment. What kind of a reporter could ever possibly pass up that comment? Instead he helped him correct it and fed him the word christian- what have we come to with the American Press, if only they understood the huge responsiblity they have, O'Keefe- with his youth and inexperience far exceeds Stephanopoulos and is more in line with what the US Constitution intended for our press! VET try looking up that word!
Is there some bigger corruption on "the Right" we should be aware of?
[...] Pot, Meet Kettle: Former Clinton Hack George Stephanopoulos Calls James O’Keefe a ‘Political Act… [...]
There is always corruption on both sides. I refuse to give allegiance to either political party because it's easy to find numerous examples. The problem is, because the MSM is so monolithically Left-wing, they go after problems on the Right while covering for the Left. That's why we need people like O'Keefe who represent the other side.
But that does by definition make him an activist. He's just one that I really like.
[...] » Pot, Meet Kettle: Former Clinton Hack George Stephanopoulos … [...]
It just seems to me that there is FAR more corruption on the Left than the Right. I would never say there was no corruption on the Right, but I am having a very hard time thinking of corrupt activities by individuals in the R or C parties, other than tawdry affairs and bribes. Where is the match to Obama's ACORN/SEIU fingers in every policy decision, or the selling of legislative seats? The offers of jobs to get out of electoral races? The scaling back of ethics committees that are too vigilant and too eager to work?

O'Keefe is doing what NO journalist will do – because they have ethics, which he doesn't. And they don't want to get slapped with a criminal record for doing their jobs so shabbily, which he does.
