The Washington Post’s David Weigel has resigned in the wake of a series of leaked emails, in which the blogger disparaged various figures in the conservative movement he was “covering” in his official capacity as the Post’s point man on the right. His resignation came less than a day after he posted this apology on the Post’s website:
I’m a member of an off-the-record list-serv called “Journolist,” founded by my colleague Ezra Klein. Last Monday, I was deluged with angry e-mail after posting a story about Rep. Bob Etheridge (D-N.C.) that was linked by the Drudge Report with a headline intimating that I defended his roughing-up of a young man with a camera; after this, the Washington Examiner posted a gossip item about my dancing at a friend’s wedding. Unwisely, I lashed out to Journolist, which I’ve come to view as a place to talk bluntly to friends.
Below the fold are quotes from me e-mailing the list that day — quotes that I’m told a gossip Web site will post today. I apologize for much of what I wrote, and apologize to readers.
There follows some choice Weigelisms:
- “This would be a vastly better world to live in if Matt Drudge decided to handle his emotional problems more responsibly, and set himself on fire.”
- “Follow-up to one hell of a day: Apparently, the Washington Examiner thought it would be fun to write up an item about my dancing at the wedding of Megan McArdle and Peter Suderman. Said item included the name and job of my girlfriend, who was not even there — nor in DC at all.”
- “I’d politely encourage everyone to think twice about rewarding the Examiner with any traffic or links for a while. I know the temptation is high to follow up hot hot Byron York scoops, but please resist it.”
- “It’s all very amusing to me. Two hundred screaming Ron Paul fanatics couldn’t get their man into the Fox News New Hampshire GOP debate, but Fox News is pumping around the clock to get Paultard Tea Party people on TV.”

The flap has created a furor in the blogosphere, and for lots of reasons, few of them having anything to do with the unimpressive Weigel himself, other than this one salient fact: he was, as Politico’s Ben Smith notes, a liberal masquerading as a conservative and thus not the man the Post thought they were hiring to write the “Right Now” column.
The Post seems simply not to have understood what they were getting when Klein suggested they hire him. National editor Kevin Merida told me for my story on the subject in May that he never asked Weigel about his politics, and Klein said he presented him to the paper simply as the best reporter covering conservatives. (Weigel’s blog is subtitled, “Inside the conservative movement.”)
“The way I explained Dave is that he’s the best reporter on the conservative movement beat,” Klein said, describing Weigel as “hard to characterize politically.”
“I have not heard him express many policy opinions,” he said.
Merida, in a web chat in April, was asked if the paper would be “adding more conservative/Republican voices to better balance what is now your predominately liberal/Democratic leaning coverage?”
He replied, “[W]e recently have added to our staff the well-regarded Dave Weigel, and also mentioned columnists Kathleen Parker and Charles Krauthammer. (Merida and a Post spokeswoman didn’t respond to questions about Weigel this morning.)

Weigel’s resignation — which came on the heels of more leaked emails, this time by the Daily Caller website — also brought back into prominence Ezra Klein’s “Journolist,” a private email circle of center-left to hard-left journalists. One member of the list describes it as a “fairly boring list, mostly concerned with stuff like the Blue Dog Democrats. It’s not ‘how can we screw the Right today?’” Still, the notion that Weigel could call for an informal information boycott of the influential (and eminently fair) Byron York only serves to reinforce the notion on the right that there is something sinister about the “Journolist,” something beyond the usual lefty policy-wonkism — although there’s much merriment in the thought that there’s a mole in Klein’s sewing circle.
But the most important thing to emerge from this mess is the notion of privacy, that there is a difference between on and off the record, and it simply must be observed unless freedom of speech — and thus of thought — is irrevocably chilled. For decades, reporters have observed the distinction between what is meant for public consumption and what is spoken of behind closed doors. The principle is not only enshrined in journalism, but in the government: “executive privilege,” however at times abused, is vital to the decision-making process, and freewheeling (if often “offensive”) conversation and characterizations are part of that process. If we have arrived at a point where we literally have to watch every word we speak, than we are no better than North Korea or the former East Germany. Somewhere, Gen. McChrystal is smiling…
Still, the days when “gentlemen don’t read other gentlemen’s mail” are long gone, and in cyberspace any utterance, no matter how “private,” is now potentially public — and potentially career-ending. That’s the real lesson from the Weigel flap: in the war of ideas in cyberspace, truth is no longer the first casualty. Trust is.

Never say on the 'net what you wouldn't be willing to say out loud. You are essentially talking in a roomful of strangers who could decide to eavesdrop on you.
Another example of the "Washington Post" slinking into irrelevance…WaPo "didn't know Weigel's politics"? Really?
Washington IS politics – it's 24/7 politics – he wrote about inside conservative politics. Of course they knew his liberal bent.
A tiny bit of vetting would have "outted" this guy, and that would have been ok if was just honest with his readers. I read know lefties, it's ok as long as it's known info. Weigel looks like a little weasel.
And what network you say it on (Twitter), it could be held forever in record in the Library of Congress.
[...] UPDATE: Michael Walsh on the Weigel flap. [...]
A tiny bit of vetting? They asked Ezra frickin' Klein to recommend a "conservative.". What else did they expect?
Maybe they should ask Pat Buchanan to recommend someone to cover the Left.

Too true. On the rare occassions when I go to WaPo.com, I'm immediately reminded why I cancelled my subscription. I never could figure out the point of Weigel's column. It was obvious he wasn't a conservative, or even fair to conservatives.
James
WaPo could just read the blogs and comments here on the BIGS…
Better takes, generally, than anything I've seen in their sorry fishwrap…
Except for the occasional "birther"/ "truther"/ antiSemite/ RonPaul supporter,
this is "THE" place for politics…
IMHO…

The internet is not behind closed doors, its the water cooler, the break room, the after work bar, the open bar at a wedding.
You are in play.
Look at his mug. I can see hate written all over it.
Way to lump in a fair amount of posters. Your not one of those typical republican fence sitters with thier finger to the wind are you? And by your comments on birthers you pretty much state where you are coming from. The fence.
Man you have that right. Let me tell you, I work in internet security. Our job is to basically keep the records of who did what and when, and produce them if the corp. police (work joke) need them.
While I can say the job is nothing like they portray us in cyber-action movies, we are much, much better than the average user who calls the help desk because 'the internet doesn't work.'
If you do it on the internet, unless you are really – and I do mean really – good at it, you can usually, eventually, be tracked down.
You know, I like to think that I'm up on political analysis on the web, but I have never heard of this guy before. I haven't a clue as to who or what he is.
I suppose I could check Wikipedia, but why bother? When I see a talking head on the left go down, I'm more apt to use it as an excuse to buy a round for the house than worry about the specifics.
The standards for being a journalist seems to have slipped over the past 30 years. They failed in the one area that cannot be compromised, TRUTH. The poignant word that no wiggle room, no shades of grey, it is what it is and does not care if you believe it.
It is too late for the current crop of "journalists".
They may want to print a different title on the next set of business cards
Dog Walker—BabySitter—Cashier—DishWasher.—Come to mind.
Someone at the WaPo is an idiot, and it's not Wiegel.
What super-genius thought to themselves: "We need to get a conservative to cover the right wing beat. Let's ask Ezra Klein!"
Speaking for myself, and IMHO, anyone still hung up on the birth certificate, is not living in reality.
This fool has been elected, The time to vet him was before the election …
Now, I think the proper word is, academic.
Plus he has a bulletproof House…
But keep it up, the middle of the road "moderates", who seem to decide all elections, will vote for the "devil they know", rather then allow pinheaded morons with fringe views, such as yourself, a sniff at power….
Unexpected … By whom might I ask …….
Cheeto-fingered, basement-dwelling 'journalism' is the new yellow-journolism.
1. Where's the journolist membership list? I highly doubt there's anyone "hard-left" or even very "far-left" on it.
2. Weigel is at least nominally a libertarian; he used to work for a libertarian magazine (and then one funded by Soros). He has a long history, and it's not difficult to find it. No one who's been paying attention would have thought he'd do things from the WaPo any different than the way he did things at TWI or Reason.
3. See my Dave Weigel posts for examples of him lying and showing low ethics (i.e., writing about me and then refusing to approve the comment I left in reply showing how he's wrong).
1) Ezra Klein, Joe Klein, Paul Krugman, Matt Yglessias… pretty "far-left" dude.
WaPo has a whole series of ongoing deceptions, this simply being the tip of the iceberg. Journalism is pretty much dead and buried at WaPo. They are not even the left leaning WaPo of times past. They are hard left at this point and no point in denying it. WaPo was outright Obama cheerleaders during the last SElection cycle.
The best thing to do here is not rehabilitate WaPo but to let it die the type of death reserved for Helen Thomas and let a better more honest and more truth telling service rise up in its place.
There's a time and place for everything. Weasel (sic) was definitely in the right place (WaPo) but just not his time.
Maybe the Post will rein in some of its other "Journolist".. Nahh…
Everything posted on the internet is, in essence, published. On the record/off the record applied to journalism when it employed a pad and pencil and the tape recorder was turned off. If a reporter decided to go on the record with off the record details, his/her credibility was riding on it. Credibility, also a thing of the past for most 'journalsits'.
It's interesting that The Weasel Post DOES NOT MENTION ANYTHING about the removal of this despicable, pathetic lunatic-left slime-bag they had masquerading as a "journalist". But then that's what we expect from media sewer rats.
If I may ask, dear LOL, please expand my understanding of how you see this. Your pragmatic viewpoint is most realistic concerning needed election results, as it is important to not rankle the middle in order to conserve votes of those with delicate sensibilities.
Is the door closed completely, however, on the academic? Is there no place to discuss how the media failed its duty in the vetting process? It's tough on some of us to accept the idea that "in order to find out what is in the Obamacare bill, you will have to pass it first", or more recently, Nancy said something to the affect that in order to know what is in the 2000 page finance bill, you will have to pass it." Likewise, we are only recently finding out the hard way what Obama meant when he said "reparations don't go far enough", and "fundamentally transform this country"- which, in all fairness, should have been thoroughly explored two years ago.
A shared sentiment, indeed.
These journalists might want to include in their short memoirs that in forgetting about reporting who, what, when, where, why and how with a sharp eye towards guarding the people's interests in lieu of the governments' / Left's, their efforts collectively lead to the downfall of print media concurrently with the soaring popularity of internet news and blogs.

All of those Weigel-isms sound so childish in diction and empty of thought. A mature, grown man in a professional field shouldn't be using the suffix "-tard" to refer to the opposition. Leave that to the basement trolls.
Comes across as quite the 'tool' to me….
Especially with regards to the Drudge comments. Matt makes links available that are of interest to him, and obviously to thousands upon thousands of us. How that spawns a desire for his self emolation is quite curious indeed.
Right again, Mike. Since Watergate, the notion of any restraint on the part of the press has degraded, and with the rise of the internet, it's only gotten worse. Camera phones and handheld recorders cheap enough for the ordinary citizen have altered the nature of journalism and public service forever. Journalists climb –with golf shoes if necessary– over the bodies of disgraced public servants on their way to fame. In Watertown, MA last month a neighbor of a guy arrested in connection with the Times Square bombing sold the video she shot of the scene to media outlets…cash only. It's not just the people with press passes you need to be aware of anymore. Weigel must've had too many Bud Light Limes.
Please explain you screen name to me …

One would think a journalist/blogger would know that ANYTHING put online is anything but private. Ranting on a listserv is the GenXer equivalent of ranting in a bar. In both cases, there's a lot of ambient noise, but that doesn't mean people can't hear you.
DUH.
LOL, I'll start with this- Kevin is the only one who has figured it out and told me as much; have you asked him?
As to not seeing me before….hmmmm. Hard to say, except that I watch Breitbart much more than the Biggies. A number of you certainly have impacted that view; will look at other sites more often now; may even start following some but I have been slow to weigh the ramifications. You'll be the first- how's that?
Editing tips much appreciated; certainly aim to please. You brought up the same factors as my technical writing professor, therefore identifying you as one bright cookie who will keep me in line, right?

Cry me a river. Email is not a private medium and it never has been, especially email lists. It's no different than a conversation at a party – someone may be overhearing your conversation. If you want a private conversation, don't email to a listserv. What an idiot this Weigel character is, not to mention a liar.
Most importantly, if you want to be cruel and rude, don't go whining when it comes back to haunt you. Weigel got what he deserved.

yup. I see typical liberal smugness AND acne all over this punk's face.
Or having Buchanan write a "A Guide to Visiting and Enjoying Canackistan on $50. a Day". He's just the wrong guy.

Ya, me too. I don't read WaPo much and I'm not an "inside baseball" Washington D.C. type reader, but his comments are not the words a paid journalist would want escaping captivity. He'll land on his liberal feet, get a new MSM gig, or land a cushy government job.

Honest journalists who tell the truth? Look who is teaching them to be "journalists". Most "journalism" profs are far left loons teaching at far left universities. What chance do the students have of being objective when they are taught not to be? What is absolutely amazing is that they actually believe that they are being "fair and balanced" in their reportage and commenting and, so, cannot stand or even try to tolerate the FOX NEWS and Matt Drudge's of the world. Perhaps "journalists" should have a "P" or "L" or "C" after their names , like Congresspeople have a "D" or "R" , so that there is full disclosure. Then we will see honesty right from the get-go as most "journalists" do not want that label. It blows their cover of liberal subjectivity when they are trying to look objective.
Maybe I'm in a minority on this but it seems to me after reading all of the various takes on Weigel posted here at Big, that the writers are somehow trying to make the case that being dishonest is perfectly acceptable for journalists so long as nobody finds out your dishonest.
Isn't that the Blago defense?
I don't have an "off the record" position on anything and I don't trust anyone that does. The press exists only to inform the public, not to keep the secrets of those they are suppose to watch for us. The recent revelation that the press has known about the Gore investigation from the start is just further proof that the public can't trust the press.
"the next tank of gas in the VW" You even had "the uniform" then, didn't you? Media Matters? Oh, my! 'You ok? Does anyone have the number for 911!? This man need(ed) help! Welcome back.
Read the "Communist Manifest", in the late 80s, as part of my coursework. 'Watching the news one day, listening to something the current crop of DemoTards had in mind, and was waylaid with an epiphany–They're heerrreee. Strange how the libs still cant get over Drudge for the Clinton-Lewisnky story break. These moonbats havent realized Matt Drudge mainly posts links and doesnt break big stories much anymore? If its link to a story about a courrupt lib, they blame Drudge for it. Insane. But laughable.
"Klein suggested they hire him…" "“The way I explained Dave is that he’s the best reporter" "“I have not heard him express many policy opinions,” he said."He replied, “[W]e recently have added to our staff the well-regarded Dave Weigel"
These statements don't sound like he didn't know what this guy was all about. First he says "Dave" is a great reporter then he acts like he doesn't know what "Dave" is all about. I think Klein is working both sides of the table or just saying stuff to cover his ass, either way, he can't be trusted.
Klein recommends the journalist to cover conservatives? What's wrong with this picture? Why not ask Krauthammer who might fill the bill? But then again who is "covering" liberals at the Post? That would be the easiest job in the world, they could just follow each other around and marvel at their own brilliance.
How many more lie-beral David Weigel RATS are out there hiding behind their keyboards spewing hate and division??? LOTS and LOTS!

That's a really little strap-on!
If they asked Krauthammer then that person might be effective. I'm sure the WaPO editor isn't interested in anyone on the right being effective.
Obviously Weigel is not only NOT a conservative, he's an IDIOT! Who is so stupid, in this day and age, to believe that anything you write or post online cannot be traced back to you? And it is illustrative of how far left the Washington Post is that they would ask Ezra Klein to recommend a conservative writer! These people don't have a clue!
David Weigel graduated from the American Community School in London, England; a left wing international boarding school where globalism and multi-culturalism are foundational concepts. Activities and field trips include unique trips like the Model United Nations in Beijing. Students also participate in many local and international community activities including Habitat for Humanity and Mission Antarctica.
After receiving a socialist brainwashing from this institution, he studied Journalism and Political Science at another far left cesspool, Rahm Emanuel’s alma mater in Chicago, Northwestern.
In the final analysis, he is a naïve 20-something who believes in moral relativism. With no moral compass, he is unable to distinguish right from wrong. His writings exhibit a pedagogical vacuousness that mirrors the modern socialist society in England.
David Weigel is unable to comprehend conservative concepts and values; therefore he is unfit to write about them. Until he grows up and gets a proper education, he should stick to writing about things he understands.
Weigel writes: "This would be a vastly better world to live in if Matt Drudge decided to handle his emotional problems more responsibly, and set himself on fire."
So, just who is it that has emotional problems? Only a mind that has been destroyed by liberalism could make such a sick comment.
Our country is currently vulnerable to attack by Muslim extremists because our intelligence services and our military have been rendered ineffective and dysfunctional by left wing political correctness.
Our country faces a far greater danger than terrorism, however.
Our Constitution, our freedoms, our economic well being, our entire way of life, is being threatened by liberalism. The left wing progressive movement in this country has been gaining momentum since Herbert Hoover and now threatens to permanently destroy America as we know it.
People like this little snot David Weasel would turn this country into another Cuba.
He is a card carrying member of the “enemy within” that must be defeated at all costs if we are to save this nation.
