Kandahar, Afghanistan
15 March 2010
In David Galula’s 1964 book, Counterinsurgency Warfare, THEORY AND PRACTICE, he states:
“The ideal situation for the insurgent would be a large, land-locked country, shaped like a blunt-tipped star, with jungle-covered mountains along the borders and scattered swamps along the plains, in a temperate zone with a large and dispersed rural population and a primitive economy.”
Mr. Galula described Afghanistan almost perfectly. Instead of jungle-covered mountains are some of the most extreme folds on Planet Earth: The “abode of snow,” the Himalaya. Afghan elevations dwarf Mount Rainier, and make the great Colorado Rockies look like the Pygmy Snow Hills. Meanwhile, down in Kandahar and Helmand Provinces, Galula’s “swamps” are the “Green Zones,” where most of the current fighting occurs.

Yet the experienced Mr. Galula omitted a crucial factor describing the Afghan war: A heavily armed, warring amalgam of peoples, some of whose national sport and pastime is guerrilla war. British officer John Masters variously described in “Bugles and a Tiger: My life in the Gurkhas” that life, liberty and pursuit of happiness for Afghans includes vendettas, guerrilla warfare and lots of guns.
This weekend, on Saturday night, mass murderers struck. Taliban terrorists used bombs and other weapons in Kandahar City to murder about 35 people. They wounded another five dozen, and damaged about forty homes, according to reports. Enthusiasm to commit wholesale murder is one of the enemy’s prime weaknesses.
About 12 miles from the suicide attacks on Saturday night, is the runway at Kandahar Airfield, where operations continue every minute of the day.
Recently, two Belgian F-16s taxied to the runway, engines roaring, like a dragon with a foot caught in a trap. The first pilot rolled from the hanger area then parked just off the runaway. Under the cockpit, the single engine sucked air and dust, mixing oxygen with fuel, as combusted gases shot from the nozzle, bending light on the runway.

While the Belgian fighters wait, a Russian jet from parts unknown roars in, screeches down, and rolls far down the runway. It’s time for the F-16 to launch, prepared to bring space-aged, often satellite-guided weapons, to stone-aged enemies who sometimes are so uneducated that they don’t understand how to impregnate their wives. For some, their only sexual experiences are with boys, men, and animals. In years gone by, many people seemed to imagine suicide attackers were the ultimate expression of commitment. Today, we see suicide attackers for what they are: Stooges. Ignorant suicide bombers are not brave martyrs, but gullible Man Dogs trained to fetch myths. The Taliban select and condition Man Dogs as precision guided weapons. They are myth guided munitions.

A windsock speaks for the wind while lights speak for the dust.

Part scream and part roar, the whining engine creates a painful mixture of noises as the first Belgian F-16 rolls into start position.

When the pilot throttles up, the engine stops screaming. The rumble can be heard from miles away.

Brakes released.

Scorching gases bend light, creating ephemeral beauty lasting only seconds in the dark Afghan night.

The art, a heat painting on canvas of air and dust, conjured Van Gogh’s Starry Night for a private audience, and disappeared forever.

Random helicopter with refueling proboscis.

Predator returning to the lair.

Predators can carry two Hellfire missiles. This Predator has only one. Maybe the missile was fired or, maybe the Predator was launched with only one Hellfire (can carry two) to conserve fuel and increase range or loiter time.

Predator with two Hellfire missiles. Notice the inverted “V” of the tail. The tail on Reapers is like a normal “V.”

Reaper with “V” tail.

Reaper passes over with four Hellfire missiles and two smart bombs.
Though the Man Dogs succeeded on Saturday night, their trainers are being hunted down and killed.

Michael another great post…..THe topograhy of Afghanistan is almost perfect for hit and run attacks…these despots need to feel more of OUR airwarfare fall rain on them from the sky… good bless and be safe!
"Man dogs" is unfair to the dogs, Michael. You are dead right about these "shaheeds" being losers. They are pumped to the gills with a Penthouse Forum version of paradise by their Imams who, despite the salacious vision they describe, aren't too anxious to strap on the vest themselves.
Way to go Michael. Too bad our incompetent potus won't bring home the troops before legoland is built.
Excellent post Michael and awesome pics!!!!! Please stay safe and keep us posted because this administration will not.
Excellent, Michael. "…stone-aged enemies who sometimes are so uneducated…" I am blown away by this article. Thank you for having the guts to say what no one else will. Godspeed in your journeys.
Thanks Mike
If not for you we wouldn't know much about this "war"..
I'm not sure we have a committed mission, but we have brave and tremendous people in harms way who I wholeheartedly support.
But, I'm not sure about their Commander-in-Chief's real commitment to a winning strategy.
God bless all of them…
"GreenZone", the movie was unwatchable…FYI…Pass it on…
Michael, Thx for the wonderful pix,……. flabbergasted by the reproductive ignorance of the Afghans.
Keep it coming
HPD, a little background on "Green Zone".
Rajiv Chandrasekaran is the author of the book, 'Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq's Green Zone', on which this movie is based.
He is also a scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center, a progressive hotbed, whose mission is to embody Wilson's ideals in a global effort. Woodrow Wilson, the president who brought us the income tax, the Federal Reserve, and The League of Nations.
In thirty years we'll look back and wonder why American troops we were in Afghanistan, but US taxpayers will be still be paying principal and interest on the loans needed to pay Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman, SAIC, Raytheon and General Dynamics for todays weapons. Sickening.
I can think of a few targets in Washington DC that could use servicing by a flock of Reapers.
Randy
Even if the author of the book is a regressive, that doesn't mean the screenplay writer and director have to play it in an unrealistic, anti American way. It was one of the worst movies ever….
Matt should stick to the Jason Borne character..
It's the real "green zone" for him..
Great article, Mr. Yon.
I do wonder sometimes if "their trainers are being hunted down and killed", as you concluded the article.
I don't see any Imams, Ayatollahs, and mosques being shown life's exit door.
Still. It seems like we're fighting the little flames at the top of the conflagration, contrary to what anyone with experience in fighting fires knows to do. So, maybe not the little flames at the top, but a few inches down, perhaps. Certainly we are not aiming our firehoses at the base of the fire…..because somehow that would be wrong.
I don't know what to think about this fight anymore. We fight the ants and ignore the nest, and the queens. For what? I'll hoist the US Flag and shout for her victory when I see that we are targeting the sources, when our leaders finally recognize, in a fit of brilliant logic and reason, that the "holy" places are anything but, and neither are the imams and ayatollahs who speak Muhammad's madness into the people's conscience and will.
If I were over there, I would likely be AWOL looking for the long-bearded Muslim cowards who call themselves holy men, and sniping them instead of their dogs.
I fully expect that this comment will not pass muster, since it makes so much sense. Can't have that. //
Excellent post again, Mr. Yon, and once more you are speaking of startling truths that everyone that has been there know to be true but are almost never mentioned. Some of the Turks oldest and most beautiful love songs mention the beauty of a "young boys buttocks in the light of the moon" even in a much more advanced culture than Afganistan that is so different from our own that many Americans would think you are lying (or being malicious) as you report simple truths that any Afghani would agree to as mundanely obvious. It goes without saying that the Imans know that the astounding naivete and ignorance of the young people is to their advantage and so fight tooth and nail to keep them so. There are many good people living there and you never fail to make that clear. Please continue to simply reflect reality without filters and idiot biases so prevalent in the mainstream media.
Their reapers will come in Nov.
The supreme ruler of the universe is life itself. & by infinite law, we must let life be free. We here in America have been lucky to have a taste of freedom of the spirit of mankind. But the spirit is oppressed. & only by courage, & sacrifice beyond all other honor, only by sacred honor, will we win. We live today in Liberty, oppressed. & only in acting as Liberty free, are we to see victory.

Nice job as usual Mr.Yon I am more confident in the war over there than the one here in Washington.
Great shots of those instruments of freedom by the way…

Thanks so much for your reports. Keep your head down.
Michael: I showed this article to my explosive detection K9 and he is highly insulted (he's a German Shepherd imported from Slovakia and tough as nails). Otherwise, it's a great article. Please find a better comparison for these dummies in head scarfs in future articles.
Thanks from KsK9 and Blesk (I am definitely on the dumb end of the lead)
"Emerald City' was not a novel, but a nonfiction history. Slanted, to be sure, but certainly not an action thriller. Much of what Chandrasekaran had to say about Bremer and his clowns, insulated from reality in their shiny green bubble, wasn't far off- those bozos nearly lost Iraq.
Hey, I though libs believed that government spending stimulated the economy!
Perhaps it’s proof of Evolution that the report monkey gene lurks in so many people.
