The L.A. Times’s James Rainey predictably seizes on the Sherrod story, in a futile attempt to rehabilitate his reputation after his mishandling of the ACORN story last year. If I told you that Rainey’s attempt at column is highly dishonest, would you be surprised?

Rainey first deceptively suggests that Ann Coulter has labeled Breitbart a fraudster:
But certain media outlets have played the story and the political ramifications for the Obama administration (and there are questions to be answered) as if they sprang out of the ether. There’s a continuing rush to talk about effect, and very little desire to talk about cause — the steaming pile of misinformation delivered on a platter by one individual with a giant ax to grind.
Andrew Breitbart, the conservative agitator behind websites like Breitbart.com and BigGovernment.com, likes it this way. Stirring the pot, gobbling up chunks of cable television time, doing whatever it takes to further his political beliefs, even if it means putting one woman’s reputation through a meat grinder.
The severely edited video posted on Breitbart’s BigGovernment.com shows Sherrod, who is black, telling an NAACP gathering in March that she had once scrimped on assistance to a white man in danger of losing his farm. Not included in the video posting was the bulk of Sherrod’s talk, in which she recognized the error of her ways a quarter of a century ago and helped the white man, saving his farm. As a result, the farm advocate and the white family formed a lasting friendship.
Breitbart headlined the video as “proof” that “the NAACP awards racism,” when in fact it showed one woman trying to teach a lesson about the shortcomings of racial discrimination.
Conservatives including David Frum and Ann Coulter have acknowledged that the video Breitbart posted is a fraud. But Frum, a former speechwriter in the Bush White House, wrote that he has seen this act too many times to expect Breitbart to apologize for “distributing a doctored tape to defame and destroy someone.”
Reading that passage, any reader would naturally conclude that Coulter has said Breitbart knowingly posted a deceptively altered video. But it turns out Coulter said nothing of the sort. Instead, she has proclaimed Breitbart innocent of fraudulent intent, opining that Breitbart was set up (a notion that Breitbart himself has dismissed):
The whole key to this story is that Andrew Breitbart was set up. He was sent a tape that, as we now know, was massively out of context. It did look like this woman was saying something racist. When she first said it was taken out of context . . . we’ve heard that before from politicians telling racist jokes. This is the first time in world history it was literally taken out of context.
It was a lovely speech. Of course the White House reacted that way — of course you reacted the way you did. Anyone would have. I think Breitbart ought to reveal his source, because he was set up. This was a fraud. The person who sent the edited tape has to know what the full speech said, and whomever sent only that segment to Andrew Breitbart is the one who should apologize to Shirley Sherrod.
Rainey’s passage is of course technically accurate, but he damn well knows that it is calculated to cause the average reader to conclude that even Ann Coulter thinks Breitbart committed fraud. This dishonest implication is itself a form of fraud by Rainey.
Rainey naturally ties this back to his highly embarrassing missteps regarding ACORN:
Indeed, anyone who has watched television in recent days has seen an unrepentant Breitbart insisting he did nothing wrong. His previous encounters with controversy reveal a similar pattern — make no concessions, savage critics, change the subject and keep attacking. Don’t bet he’s finished with Shirley Sherrod.
I saw this up close last year when I wrote about the “sting” that a couple of young videographers performed on the liberal activist group ACORN. Breitbart posted and touted the videos as proof of liberal evil. He became enraged when I urged him to release the unedited tapes so the public could see everything that happened between ACORN workers and videographers James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles.
Actually, Mr. Rainey, Breitbart took exception to your pattern of journalistic shoddiness and deception. Since you evidently believe that people have forgotten the details, allow me to revisit them.
Regular readers will recall how Rainey uncritically quoted an ACORN worker who suggested that she had ordered Hannah Giles and James O’Keefe out of her office. Rainey (who today lambasts Breitbart for failng to contact Sherrod)hadn’t bothered to contact Breitbart — or Giles or O’Keefe — to ask their side of the story. If Rainey had bothered to do his job, he might have learned that the ACORN worker in question turned out to be only too eager to help Giles and O’Keefe with their purported child prostitution ring.
Rainey then wrote an ass-covering column that minimized his error — and which included a purported quote from O’Keefe. After I investigated the source of the quote, it turned out to be largely fabricated.
Now that’s good journalism!
With this series of embarrassments as background, it’s little wonder that Rainey would seize upon the Sherrod episode as a way to suggest that Breitbart was the villain all along — and Rainey simply the truth-teller battling the wild-eyed partisan.
The fact that Rainey routinely slams his enemies without contacting them for comment (he also did it to Jill Stewart) lends a rich layer of irony to this complaint about Breitbart:
[D]idn’t this self-styled truth-teller have an obligation to get the full speech or a response from Sherrod? He apparently did none of those things.
When Breitbart fails to contact someone for a response, that’s unforgivable sloppiness, according to Rainey. But when Rainey fails to contact Giles, or O’Keefe, or Breitbart, or Jill Stewart, that’s tip-top Big Newspaper Journalism.

I wracked my brain to some up with something witty, but can't.
Maybe it is time for the Big Sites to move on to something new. The world continues to spin wildly out of control,,, and you all are obsessing with Sordid Shirley Sherrrod.
Y'all stepped in shyte last week and about fell on your faces. Be grateful you scooted out of it with reputations somewhat intact…………
You cannot expect the left to react in an honorable or ethical manner. In their minds (small as they are) the end justifies the means. After all they believe that they are smarter than everyone else and their agenda needs to be implemented as most of us are too stupid to run our own lives.
"Conservatives including David Frum… "
I'm not sure the conservative label fits Frum anymore. He's no liberal, but after the events that lead up to his departure from NRO's The Corner, I'd classify him as more of a demented table-pounder.
It is old.
We all tire of the same old story, the black racist, turned by the media into a saint, even with a racist husband, racist supporters, and lies to make it seem true.
They do control the message. But on occasions there is a flicker of the light of truth, and it's being shown by the new media and the likes of Breitbart.
But now the NAACP is on notice that we're watching, and are going to call them out.
Nothing like late comers to a dead story, just to get in their jabs at Breitbart, with the usual twists and lies.
With all due respect to Cowboy Logic, the story of Sherrod has moved beyond the simple conflict of "edited" tapes, racism, and whom did what to whom.
The prog-lib haters have used this story to spring-board their own agenda against conservatives as a whole. Regardless of whether or not you believe Breitbart, obama, Fox, MSNBC, or the voices in my head. . . this is the "story that will not die".
They (the loser/loony left) will continue their obnoxious rant of racism at any given chance.
It's all they have left.
They continue to dispute ACORN.
The obamacare facts are now coming to light with the public. (It's about bloody time!)
The current financial regulatory bill is a bust and they know it.
Unemployment is climbing (despite their attempt to play with the numbers)
The obama administration is like a panicked magician who is telling his audience frantically that there is nothing up his sleeve, despite the rabbit crap that is pouring out his cuff.
Unfortunately, when there is an implosion with any type of administration, those that end up suffering the most are the american public. A suggestion (p'raps) is to keep fighting, keep them on the defensive, don't lose focus even when they spend countless hours trying to change the game rules,
I dunno, just my morning rant, worth about 2 cents.
same shyte, different day. Yeah, time to move on….
The LA TImes puts opinion, not facts, into type
The pages are filled with liberal hype
But the pages are loved by my bird
Who paints the front page with turds
Since he recognizes it as a MSM stereotype
Cowboy, I have confidence in you, but this is an Epic reading comprehension Fail.
I would expect some moron trolls to vomit out Left-wing talking points that are easily refuted by watching both excerpts and the ORIGINAL post by Breitbart, but not you man.
Keep the eyes on the prize which started this all — it is the institutionalized racism inside Obama's DOJ that makes White people second class citizens in this country by making it legal to discriminate against them!
Where's my phone call from the president????
Nobody, especially, the NAACP and Shirley Sherrod can justify that, and they should be made to condemn it. NOW! right now, while they are all hypocritically complaining about their own pathetic accusations.
DOJ is NOT off the hook.
With all due respect, you know I think a lot of Breitbart, and his efforts. That won't change unless of course he does something to change my opinion. Personally, I think Breitbart is a better man than to get sucked into this racism nonsense. There are bigger fish for him to fry. Sometimes, if we take our eye off the ball, it'll wack us between the eyes.
I think the Democrat party is orchestrating all of this, intending to distract Breitbart. Thus far, it has worked for a week. I'm not repeating any left wing talking points. I do however have a free mind, and will question anyone, anytime. I haven't been too popular here at times, because I do not follow the herd.
All I care about here is the fact that the la times continues to employ losers, liars and spin-meisters at their soon to be defunct concern. Watching the implosion is ugly, yet strangely satisfying.
For me, even though the continued debate is mind numbing, it still hugely proves some of the points Breitbart strives to expose. Supposed journalists and even opinion writers are showing their lack of technique and integrity, which is vital for the public who isn't yet convinced of the near total loss of professionalism. That they are in the tank for liberals and not just any Democrat is what is old news. That they will distort and accuse without sufficient basis should be highlighted each and every time. And the good news is the near-illogical output gets easier to expose, here and elsewhere, the more they write.
The story is still alive because of the emotions, not the reasoning, of non-journalists/PR professionals like Rainey. Their meme of racism isn't sticking very well, and their favored party and president have been damaged by this more than any. If the NAACP and Breitbart were the only ones to have come out looking bad, this story most likely would have died a long time ago with the MSM. That, by itself, is quite telling.
Like a friend of mine says when we debated controversial topics while sipping our favorite beverages, "Keep talking, you're making my case for me." Likewise, Breitbart and his fans should be saying, "Keep writing, you're making the case for us."
Rainey's writing style is reflectve of an eleventh grade education; too many words, too much self-satisfaction. Not enough attention to the actual story. An excellent example of spin, as was pointed out by the author. Thanks.
The more they lie about this issue the more they secure themselves in the web. They desperately hope they can move past the original tape (the entire thing is disturbing even if it plays out as a 'redemption' story — the racism is there and the remorse is actually absent) and they also desperately hope they can keep Sherrod from doing anymore interviews. She is an unapologetic racist/race-baiter. And this effort to frame Breitbart and Fox as the villains of the piece is backfiring on them daily.
If nothing else, this story is causing the conversation about race that this country needs to have.
Surely others, like me, see this saga's lifeline as important for a number of reasons. The most urgent one to me is the exposing of the effort to MARGINALIZE any critic of Obama, the publicly unpopular legislation passed to date, the economic agenda, etc. That Breitbart and FNC are still being targeted by nearly the entire media complex IS the news. A really good example you can see here in the Chris Wallace interview. Howard Dean, even with his current lack of relevance, continued the effort to paint Fox as racist, being bold enough not only to use the word itself in place of innuendo like some, but also to do so on the network itself. That it backfired for lack of credibility IS news too. I don't know or care much about the details of the liberal "war plan", but it makes sense to not allow their rants and chants to go uncorrected and uncontested.
I am waiting for more tapes on this character. The jury is still out and once a racist always a racist.
Coulter describes the first portion of the Sherrod video that Breitbart released as being "edited" and alludes to the fact that it was Breitbart who did the editing for some nefarious reason.
What Breitbart has said (I'm sure I'm reiterating familiar points here to most) is that he received the tape portion which he later released to the public. The entire tape, he didn't yet have and he didn't, then, "edit it" to obtain the portion he released.
So what's Coulter's problem understanding this? Her remarks are misleading.
UPDATE: having now reread the post, I modify my remarks…
As it is worded, though, by Coulter, it does "cast the suggestion" that Breitbart edited the tape. "Severely edited tape" that Breitbart released == makes it sound as if Breitbart did the editing…
Sorry for a rush to judgement, but I've never thought badly about Breitbart for the events, having heard his story of releasing what he had and finding him credible as the story developed.
If Breitbart did not contact Sherrod doesn’t that give credence to his claim that the story was not about her, but about the NAACP? Now whether he tried to contact the NAACP for comment is another story, and I do not recall if he did or not, but the claim that he went after some helpless, uniter of race, is crap and I'm calling B.S on it!
Also, where is the outrage over the NAACP calling the tea party racists? At least we have a video with someone claiming to have at some point been a racist… They get to make the claim without any proof and no one has made one comment (at least from the talking hairdos in the Main Stream Mouthpieces)… That just goes to show that all Libatards are in fact Bigots!
I feel no sympathy for Shirely Sherrod. After hearing her many racist remarks all over media last week, it is clear that she has actually grown MORE racist and prejudicial in her thinking than was even captured on the tape from that NAACP speech from March.
She was featured all over media this past week engaging in numerous slurs about this type, that type, her people, their people, Whites, Blacks, yaddayaddayadda…it was a prejudicial glutton fest by Sherrod and worse, the Left media in which she was making these numerous statements all seemed to need to reward her, claiming she "transcended race" and other lies.
She actually proved in her media appearances last week that not only has she NOT "transcended" anything of racial prejudicial thinking, she's actually become far more entrenced in some very nasty, ugly presumptions about entire races and "types" of human beings who are not "(her) people" (that expression is from Sherrod who refers very often to "my people" in reference to Blacks and to "their people" in reference to Whites — so she is comletely at ease with the slurring generalities of racism and hardly merits anyone's congratulations).
Has everyone lost sight of the fact that although Sherrod's speech was one of redemption ultimately, the audience to whom she was delivering the speech did not know that while she was talking about discriminating openly in the performance of her duties against the white farmer. While she was saying this, the audience was cheering. That being the point. The NAACP calling the Tea Partiers racists while ignoring the racists in their own organization.
The charge of racism is one of the Democrat's most potent weapons, because they don't even need to have proof to back up their accusations. They define what "racism" is , apply it to anyone they dislike, and the media marches to the drum beat without asking any questions. Andrew is doing a great job diffusing that weapon and taking a lot of punches for the team in the process.
Cheer up, Cowboy, it's like back in school, where the first three months of every year were spent on review, until every one caught up…only, in this case it's the "new" students we have to help. Those of us who have been aware of this crap for, um, ever are bound to be somewhat frustrated, but venting is a part of the process.
I'm pretty cheerful.
Just tired of the mind numbing bullshit of racism.
it is a guarantee that they will always play that card.
How is it a story of "redemption" to have "had it revealed" to you that "it is about black and white, but it's MORE about the poor and the haves." Class envy is NOT a higher principle than race baiting, it is only the methodology that these idiots chose as being the more effective tactic ! "You're entitled, because you're POOR" just has a bigger pool to draw from than "you're entitled, because generations ago some people enslaved other people."
What did you expect from the LA Slimes.
Larry, may I please use this line:
The obama administration is like a panicked magician who is telling his audience frantically that there is nothing up his sleeve, despite the rabbit crap that is pouring out his cuff.
coffee came out of my nose.
