How a tiny blog and a collective of climate enthusiasts broke the biggest story in the history of global warming science – but not without a gatekeeper of the climate establishment trying to halt its proliferation.
It was triggered at the most unlikely of places. Not in the pages of a prominent science publication, or by an experienced muckraker. It was triggered at a tiny blog – a bit down the list of popular skeptic sites. With a small group of followers, a blog of this size could only start a media firestorm if seeded with just the right morsel of information, and found by just the right people. Yet it was at this location that the most lethal weapon against the global warming establishment was unleashed.

The blog was the Air Vent. The information was a link to a Russian server that contained 61 MB of files now known as Climategate. Within two weeks of the file’s introduction, the story appeared on 28,400,000 web pages.
Not entirely the “death of global warming” as many have claimed – what happened with Climategate is much more nuanced and exponentially more interesting than the headlines convey. What was triggered at this blog was the death of unconditional trust in the scientific peer review process, and the maturing of a new movement – that of peer-to-peer review.
This development may horrify the old guard, but peer-to-peer review was just what forced the release of the Climategate files – and as a consequence revealed the uncertainty of the science and the co-opting of the process that legitimizes global warming research. It was a collective of climate blogs, centered on the work of Stephen McIntyre and Ross McKitrick, which applied the pressure. With moderators and blog commenters that include engineers, PhDs, statistics whizzes, mathematic experts, software developers, and weather specialists – the label flat-earthers, as many of their opponents have attempted to brand them, seems as fitting as tagging Lady Gaga with the label demure.
This peer-to-peer review network is the group that applied the pressure and then helped authenticate and proliferate the story.
Now, as expected, the virtual organism that is the global warming establishment resisted release of the weapon. At the first appearance of the Climategate files, which contained a plethora of emails and documents from the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit, the virtual organism moved to halt their promulgation. Early on, a few of the emails were posted on Lucia Liljegren’s skeptic blog The Blackboard. Shortly after the post, Lucia, a PhD and specialist in fluid mechanics, received an email from prominent climatologist Gavin Schmidt from the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS). It said in part, “[A] word to the wise… I don’t think that bloggers are shielded under any press shield laws and so, if I were you, I would not post any content, nor allow anyone else to do so.”
In response to my inquiry about his email, Schmidt posited, “I was initially concerned that she might be in legal jeopardy in posting the stolen emails.” Gavin Schmidt was included in over 120 of the leaked correspondence.
Gavin Schmidt
When asked if she thought the Climategate documents were a big deal at first sight, Lucia responded, “Yes. In fact, I was even more sure after Gavin [Schmidt] sent me his note.”
Remember these names: Steven Mosher, Steve McIntyre, Ross McKitrick, Jeff “Id” Condon, Lucia Liljegren, and Anthony Watts. These, and their community of blog commenters, are the global warming contrarians that formed the peer-to-peer review network and helped bring chaos to Copenhagen – critically wounding the prospects of cap-and-trade legislation in the process. One may have even played the instrumental role of first placing the leaked files on the Internet.
This group can be thought of as the first cousins to Andrew Breitbart’s collective of BIG websites – obsessively curious, grassroots investigators that provide vision to the establishment’s blind eye. Peer-to-peer review is the scientific version of the undernews.
To fully understand how this amorphous body came about, one has to press rewind – back to the introduction of the now famous “hockey stick” graph, and how this iconic image inadvertently gave birth to this group.
**
On October 14, 1998, Michael Mann, Raymond Bradley, and Malcolm Hughes, also known as Mann et al (1999), penned a paper entitled Northern Hemisphere Temperatures During the Past Millennium: Inferences, Uncertainties, and Limitations and submitted the study to the scientific journal Geophysical Research Letters (GRL). Given the acknowledged uncertainties and limitations expressed in the title, it is hard to believe that the graph showcased in the paper would later become the poster child of certainty for a scientific consensus on global warming – but it would become just that. The paper, an extension of a study published earlier that year in Nature magazine, included a reconstruction of global temperature variation over many centuries.
Part of the science of reconstruction claims that tree rings viewed in the cross-section of specific trees can be used to infer temperatures in the past. Subscribers to trees as temperature proxies believe that they provide a picture of past temperatures at times when thermometers were not present. The paper was published by GRL in 1999, and included the first hockey stick that stretched back to 1000 AD.

It is hard to overestimate the influence that this iconic image has had on the discourse over anthropogenic global warming, or temperature increases due to human emissions of CO2. From its introduction, the hockey stick graph, named for its shape resembling Wayne Gretsky’s weapon of choice, was seen as compelling evidence in the case for man induced global warming. The graph showed a relatively stable temperature trend over the past 1000 years, until about the 1900s, where the graph takes a turn upwards, followed by another dramatic turn sharply upwards at around 1960 through the time of the publication of the article.
What was alarming about this graph was that the up trend coincided quite closely to the beginning of the industrial revolution, widely thought to start at about 1850. If true, the graph’s temperature increase could be tied to the introduction of carbon dioxide emissions – pointing to man and machine steering the earth toward a collision course with the apocalypse. Theories of man-induced climate change had been around long before Mann et al, but their graph gave the effect of italicizing, underlining, and boldfacing the problem of global warming.

The utility of the hockey stick graph to convey this alarming belief was quickly realized, with a variation of the graph appearing on the front cover of a World Meteorological Organization report entitled WMO Statement on the Status of the Global Climate in 1999 (above). This version of the graph included temperature reconstructions of three different groups of climate scientists, including Michael Mann, as well as Phil Jones and Keith Briffa, the latter two both from the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit – the university where the Climategate files originated. This graph was even more compelling than the Mann et al (1999) hockey stick because it provided a graphical scientific consensus of man-induced global temperature increase.
Michael Mann
Now, the WMO’s 1999 report was not just any obscure scientific climate audit. The World Meteorological Organization is one of the founders of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – the very body that is tasked with evaluating the risk of climate change caused by human activity. The inclusion of the hockey stick on the front cover was an indication that the graph would also be highlighted in the gold standard of global warming reports – the IPCC’s 2001 Third Assessment Report (IPCC TAR). The IPCC TAR is the document that provides governments with policy prescriptions to mitigate the effects of global warming.
The indication proved to be true, with the hockey stick graph being highlighted in not one, not two, but six different places throughout the report. Again, a scientific consensus was implied – providing a nice tidy story.
Its inclusion cemented the hockey stick as the iconic image for proponents of man-induced climate change. The graphs colorful and prominent display, in a sense, incited environmentalists to enlist with the camp of urgent action, and even inspired Al Gore to include a variation of the stick in his Oscar-Awarded documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.”
With its big screen debut, the hockey stick had pierced pop culture. It was now big time.

The hockey stick reminds me of the ole time screen doors, you better get out the their way or they wacked you on your backside! I believe the hockey stick is heading into it's downswing! Watch scientists run for cover!
All I can say is thank you..I am always grateful when someone questions the 'unquestionable'. They were about to 'run the table' with this..with disasterous results to economies around the world.
I recall hearing about the emails and shrugging, thinking "How bad could it be for The Hockey Team?"
Then I read the emails and realize that the CRU guys were batshit crazy – they had held out from sharing data and code but the mails about FOI were incredible – then the real reveal was the manipulation of peer review process. It may be old news for academics but for someone with an idealized view of the scientific process it was a real eye opener.
Wow! go figure. We have finally learned that a bunch of over educated legends in their own mind can be far more dangerous to humanity that simple street thugs on a Chicago corner. Who woulda thunk that? When highly educated people find some form of personal agenda it is not because they honestly believe they are correct but that they believe the masses to stupid to figure it out on our own.
This is a real set back for scientists and for the good honest non agenda driven that is a horrible consequence. One more reason Gore and friends should find themselves paying back hundreds of billions of dollars to tax payers while they spend the rest of their spoiled little lives rotting in a federal supermax.
The role of the skeptic blogs in exploding the Climategate scandal is a seminal event in ushering in the new era of citizen-driven internet reporting, breaking the stranglehold of the liberal internationalist elite.
Along with BigHollywood, BigGovernment and BigJournalism, of course.
Tree Ring Circus
Imagine for a moment that a high school student submitted a project for competition in which he offered up the hypothesis that tree rings gave a historical blueprint of climate change.
Competition Judge: "Ok, Johnny, this is a very interesting theory. May I see your data?"
Johnny McFibber: "I lost it."
Competition Judge: "Hmmm. That will make it nearly impossible to win, Johnny. Can you duplicate it or give us a detailed description of what it showed"
Johnny M "Actually, I hid the parts that didn't comport with my theory., in fact, showed the exact opposite of my theory,..and I emailed all my friends to do the same"
Competition Judge" "Johnny, that's not the way we conduct ourselves in the sciences, you must be confused with your humanities classes. Over here, we strictly scrutinize the facts.
Johnny M: There's a reporter here I would like to introduce you to…he wants to ask some questions about your first marriage.
Competition Judge: Great work on this project, Johnny. The science is settled. You win.
Moral? Research softly and carry a big hockey stick.
Coming soon to a theater near you: "Algore, the Blizzard"………………
I would like to say , im in florida and as of today what is in danger of killing sea turtles that are floating, iguanas falling out of trees and the manatees that i love so much is the cold weather.
cf,
I'm laughing as hard as humanly possible!
Unfortunatly the mainstream media is still burying this along with Acorn and all the rest of the lies, deceit and corruption not to mention the Marxist takeover in full swing.
Thank You for these stories as I have for a long time known these climate change, global warming, ice age(in the 70’s) was junk!
As a very, very amateur weather bug, I've argued for years that this "machine" was trying to pull one of the largest scams in history. I read the "Deniers" when it first came out. Got laughed at!! Thanks to all for proving an old "skeptical" woman correct.
The only type of 'peer review' these pseudo climate intellectuals are deserving of is a dry colonoscopy with a hockey stick as the probe.
Welcome to the club. When I began to voice my doubts about "climate change" a few years ago, you should've seen the names I was called.
Now, with the revelation of Climategate, I trust my intuition more than ever.
"Global Warming cause Global Cooling because hot air raise to the arctic and melts the ice which falls to the South."
I have had this argument presented to me by a Warmer.
The "warmers" are like little kids. You confront them with the truth and they change the subject or flat out lie to your face. By the way there is no "New Science". There is only Science. What the "warmers" do is voodoo
I'm laughing so hard cf but then I just realized that I'm spewing way too much CO2. I guess the EPA is coming after me today and putting a bag over my head! It's really hard to breath with that damn thing on all day!
Anyone seen these? Our takes on Gore.

[...] Peer-to-Peer Review: How ‘Climategate’ Marks the Maturing of a New Science Movement, Part I [...]
yup. i've had a similar 'conversation'. i sort of blinked really hard and realized it wasn't a dream.
Imagine how dangerous an overeducated Chicago street thug with a personal agenda can be. Don't have to look any further than the White House.
There is a lot faulty climate science taking place. It not only affects historical temperatures. Modern temperatures have a serious global warming bias problem caused by the pro-global warming scientists. See this web site for a listing of numerous issues.
http://www.c3headlines.com/2009/12/the-climate-liars-of-copenhagen-pt-3-global-warming-is-unequivocal.html
I think Michael Mann was ALSO a commentator on "Earth2100" (on the History Channel- I HATE HC now) along with Van Jones and John Holdren.
HC is in the tank for Obama.
I hear you both. It was really lonely for quite a long time, wasn't it?
Patrick,
Thanks for this. One of the elements of the story I can only allude to in the book ( time and space of course) is how we are seeing big science, including its arcane publishing machine taken down by an army of davids. Pajamas peer-to-peer review.
Actually, A while back one journal experimented with allowing online comments and questions to papers. It's covered at Climate Audit. The process broke down in part because the scientists refused to answer questions from "non scientists" yesterday I had a long chat with McIntyre. I explained what the scientists behavior looked like from a product marketing standpoint. If skeptics were selling doubt, the the scientists had to sell certainty.. new and improved of course. And McIntyre said something that nailed it. These guys make lousy sales people. They don't listen to their customer. He's right. It's an Ivory tower thing.
This leftist wealth tranfer scheme is unraveling more quickly than a Soviet flag at a Democrat(SS) political rally…
Funny!
They aren't finished with this yet, every one on the left has far too much invested for them to just cash in now.
All they're doing is regrouping, getting their stories straight, and then they'll be back for a counter offensive.
It just never ends with these people. Can't wait for the next 'crisis'. Like Michael Crighton said, "we're living in a state of fear".
It's just like the old saying, when the only tool in your box is a hammer, every problem begins to look like a nail.
When you getting billions in grants to search for global warming, its hardly surprising they didn't find just that.
Plus, when else could people with jobs like this ever have a chance to rub elbows with Angeline Jolie and Leonardo Decaprio?
"We are Spartacus!"
I'm sure its already been underway and has been for some time. The press has just been spiking them.
Minor nit. May be a typo, but I believe the start of the Industrial Revolution is generally pegged at 1750, not 1850.
M
Give it about 15 – 20 more years and yes, it will happen all over again with global cooling. Been happening since the late 1800's.
A couple of reporters did some research on how climate stories were covered in past publications, and they saw a distinct pattern, cold, then warm, then cold, switch about every 30 years or so. The MSM just loves to eat this stuff up, in part because they just can't pass up the head line "World coming to an end: women and minorities hit hardest."
Patrick it looks like the police have contacted JeffId. ( domestic extremism task force or some such nonsense)
I suspect they will be contacting me, after the whole story breaks.
I do want to protect deep throat. May need legal help.
http://bishophill.squarespace.com/blog/2010/1/8/s...
Poor Michael Mann he’s stumbled, and his hockey stick is stuck in his…
Say what you want… but there is an air of a higher power at play when a historic cold snap blasts the world after the CRU emails were released. As if someone upstairs wanted to be sure the CRUTape Letters got everyone's full attention.
A mild to warm winter and this would have been forgotten.
When this story broke I spent a lot of time at Anthony Watt's site, which did a great job of not only explaining what was going on with the emails, and keeping frequent updates of how the story was impacting the AGW movement, but was prepared to acommodate all the lay people who were flooding his site, looking for an education on this topic. Very inspirational thing to witness, and participate in, as it was happening.
Count me among those who didn't fall for the scam.
I picked right up on it. Having been educated as a electrical technician, promoted to engineer, and having worked with real scientists in product development, I have never met any one connected with science and technology who ever said "it's settled." Because we know nothing is ever settled. That's why Windows is up to version 7. Because of all the problems with versions 1 – 6.
I trust version 8 is already under development.
I was told I was either on Exxon-Mobil's payroll, or else I knew nothing about science.
I have two degrees and have worked in the computer industry for over 25 years, they cleaned bed pans at a state institution.
So you can see why obviously I must be wrong.
You're just jealous because 'old science' doesn't attract babes like Angeline Jolie.
/snarc
I've been dreaming of this day for years. When the voices of those insultingly called deniers would finally reach the world!
All that education gets in the way!
Maybe if the warmers just shut up there would be less carbon dioxide to warm the planet
All, make sure to check out “Intellectuals and Society” by Thomas Sowell. All the intellectuals need to do is convince other intellectuals that their thoughts are sound. Other than that, there is no need for real world evidence or proof to on whether their theories can withstand scrutiny.
Also, read this article about intellectual dishonesty by the Left:
http://www.americanthinker.com/2010/01/the_intellectual_dishonesty_of.html
This is a biased article written by a hack journalist who has no serious understanding of scientific reasoning. Anthropogenic global warming is almost certainly quite real, despite the faux pas of a few irate scientists in Britian. This bit of 'news' is completely overblown in terms of its significance. Moreover, there is just about no one in the reputable scientific community who takes these events as a 'serious' threat to the accuracy of the basic science.
Despite that simple factoid, the global warming naysayers will contine to babble. But of course, they have much LESS interest in whether the science is correct or not than they have in being published or expressing a political point of view.
Unfortunately for them, the atmosphere of the planet doesn't care about their desires, intentions, politics, or petty personal interests. For that matter it doesn't care about mine either. But anthropogenic global warming is quite real because the massive amount of data we have says it is.
This article is stupid, and written for stupid people.
Well Well Scientist Jim, that was a very helpful post. How did you do in you logic courses? Mind citing the reference you especially like that identify the data that pegs the post LIA warming to human activities? Or should we just take your word for it.
Any sufficiently educated earth scientist would have know AGW was the result of jiggered numbers. Would have known the lie. Would have known anyone calling themselves an expert in terms of climate or the environment was a charlatan and a liar. So. Who are the participants in promulgating this lie? They all, everyone, should be expelled from all grants and university chairs. All should henceforth have to work by the sweat of their bodies. There can never be trust again. There can never be trust in any form of government sponsered 'science'. They are all guilty of a plot against civilization for the promotion of their own views and personal gain. Guilt. Now it is time to pass sentence.
Congrats, great article, I heart BBart–is there a BigScience in the works?
I propose that henceforth, AGW be referred to as "Mann-induced" global warming. Heh heh. See what I did there?
Aha, a scientist!
See http://www.globalwarminghoax.com/comment.php?comm... Lots of scientific "global warming naysayers."
Tree rings do not show temperature, they show precipitation. Ask any anthropology 101 text. Who says these bozos are scientists?
That's better, though a bit wordy… Maybe just "Spartacus II: Payback!"
Nuts,You're absolutely right, less is more.
That said, you wouldn't have thought much of our first effort…
…."Spartacus II: Wherein Our Heroes Engage In Deliberate Effort To Obtain Restitution for Assorted Grievances and Injustices Meted Out By Brutal Tyranny"…
It is amazind how much Gavin Schmidt and Michael Mann look alike? Downright wierd.
Almost no one doubts the planet is in a warm period and getting warmer. There is massive doubt as to the contribution of man to this phenomenom. The planet warms, the planet cools, what the planet never does is have a constant temperature over an extended period of time.
Look at the eustatic sea level level changes in the geological record and understand the primary cause was the expansion and contraction of the polar ice caps.
What gets to me, is the leader behind all this faulty and flawed science (riddled with lies) was the same guy who predicted the World was heading into an ice age, and everyone ignore him. So a few months later, he simply changes his claims to warming instead of cooling, and everyone believe the guy!

"Anthropogenic global warming is almost certainly quite real…."
Almost, but no cigar.
Actually Fred, overall the Earth has been COOLING for the last eleven years if you look at the raw data and not the IPCCs "adjusted data". That's how bad this scam has got, we are no longer even given the real average temperatures – only 'adjusted' ones! Look at New Zealand's just as one small example:
http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/11/25/uh-oh-raw-d...
It's like they never heard the story of Chicken Little. Remember, at the end of the story, who's in the cave waiting? Not even National Geographic, which should have known better, questioned this. (I notice on their cable channel that they are still believers).
It's too bad as I grew up on the old Scientific American and National Geographic. (you know, when they were excellent?) What's taking their places?
What-the-hell.
PS: almost forgot: Thanks BigJournalism
I think man started burning wood about 800,000 years ago.
Intellectual dishonesty from the Left? Could you point to any articles on that site that criticized the reasonings GWB offered for going to war? Since these were pretty easy to disect at the time, it would be a minimal indication of americanthinker's credibility if they had the integrity to do so at the time.
Faux pas of a few irate scientists, eh?!! I guess it doesn't mean anything when these scientists are the main ones that the IPCC uses for thier research and data!! Then being caught fudging data and not following FOIA's isn't important either I suppose. I think you need to read the post a little ways towards the front citing a report in the WaPo about all the ice melting and the waters rising….back in 1922!!! Please, by all means, if you want to be taken seroiously cite facts that can be backed up and checked. Not your opinion and your word that others think the same way that you do.
So, could you explain this to us please? Are you arguing that because there may have been cooling in recent years there could be no long term increasing trend that occasionally has opposite short term swings? Wouldn't that be like arguing city traffic never moves because at times you observe it stopped at a traffic light?
I can point you to an entire site…Media Matters. And how about a news (if you can call it that) network….MSNBC (Rachel Maddow, Thee Ed Show).
Your post is every bit as vacuous as Gavin Schmidt's "if I were you" e-mail to Lucia Liljegren. No data, just invectives, insults and threats intended to silence critics.
Global warming is dead, Jim.
Between my roots in the farm country of middle America and my husband who's a microbiologist working in the private sector, I've never bought man-made global warming either. I think it's mainly just attractive to overly guilty urban types who have no close connections with the countryside and nature. Also my husband's BS detectors went red as soon as they started announcing that the science was "settled." And right now, he's livid over climate gate. He can make a whole list of things those so-called scientists did that would instantly get him fired in his current QC position.
Hey now! The HC is convinced that the world will end in 2012. They must be able to see the writing on the wall and realize that a conservative takeover is close to inevitable. I expect to be seeing a show that theorizes that Palin is the anti-Christ any day now.
I'm amused at how strongly the denialist contingent resembles the Soviet Lysenkoists.Lysenkoism was junk genetics, but it was communist-party-approved junk science because it backed communist dogma. Every good party member was required to sing the praises of Lysenkoism. The actual good scientists, the real soviet geneticists, risked the gulag or execution for doing actual science.
That sort of fanatical political correctness is just as strong with the denialist contingent. Deep down, a lot of them have to be aware they're babbling nonsense, just as the Lysenkoists were. However, they don't dare say that out loud, under penalty of being purged from the conservative movement. Denialism backs conservative dogma just like Lysenkoism backed Soviet dogma. Therefore, conservatives will keep cursing EnemyOfThePartyGore, repeating mindless sound bites that have been debunked hundreds of times, and making up big lies about the emails, just as a good communist party … I mean Republican party member should. And they would send the real climate scientists to a gulag, if they had that power. They've certainly been free with the death threats and harassment.
In contrast, the AGW side is pretty much dogma-free. There's the evidence, so we follow where it leads. Politics is for politicians. While denialists obsess over Al Gore and other perceived authority figures, we look at the science instead of the people. The science doesn't support us; we support the science.
For two recent examples, remember acid rain and ozone. Those who mindlessly followed conservative political dogma ended up having to slink away after being proven disastrously wrong. It's going to happen again. Oh, I could be wrong, but that's extremely unlikely, given that various laws of thermodynamics and mountains of evidence would have to be incorrect in order for AGW theory to be wrong. It's not quite up with the round earth theory or theory of gravity yet, but it's getting there.
It seems a logical next step as blizzards tend to follow him wherever he goes to speak on Global Warming. God has an incredible sense of humor.
I was referring to americanthinkers, with their pompous self-aggrandizing name. I was wondering how their people called it when GWB's administration was proclaiming with certainty there were WMDs? At the time, the case was fragile since it relied on hyping threat risks and smearing those who objected – important red flags for any critically thinking individual to cry foul.
As my husband (also a scientist named Jim) frequently points out – No one can verify independently whether or not the science was correct because the original data has so conveniently been destroyed not to mention a refusal to release methodology so that verification with independent analysis can be attempted. If the science was so settled and clear, they would have nothing to fear when every skeptical scientist in the world recreates their experiments and discovers for themselves that it does indeed work that way. Isn't that what science is supposed to be all about? A scientist making a discovery and having other, skeptical scientist recreate what he just claimed to have done?
It amazes me that this very basic, I would say 10th grade science, seems to puzzle people so much? The whole alarmist argument is based on increasing levels of CO2 equals increased temperature. Fact is, the temperature (on average) has been declining globally for the last eleven years while CO2 has been increasing. You CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS! Either CO2 is causing the World to warm, and the World is warming, or it isn't. At the moment Europe is seeing some of its coldest temperature on record. Again, you can't have it both ways, if the World WAS warming increasingly, you cant then have the coldest temperatures in recorded history! Has the World's average intelligence level really sunk so low? It frightens me.
Actually when the RAW data was requested, East Anglia University said ' We threw it away, as we needed the space'. The real question is, why haven't these third rate fraudster scientists been arrested for fraud yet?
I did a lot of work for the old Westvaco Corp, (now part of Mead Paper), and tree rings do show a history of the health of the tree. But, that includes everything from temperature to furtileizer to rain fall to growing room and sunshine. They were into growing wood for the paper mill. They looked for "Biomass" so everything was important to maximizing that end product. So, the "reading" of tree rings is not only temperature. They should have known that….. and probably did. More's the shame.
Lol, is that the "adjusted data" or the real data Jim "A Scientist"? 31000 scientists signed a petition disagreeing with the small handful of third rate scientists (who by the way admit themselves they aren't really sure the global warming (that inconveniently stopped eleven years ago) was man made). So, the only one babbling about "massive amount of data" etc, is you and the other brain washed sheep who follow the IPCC – a political NOT scientific organisation.
I see. Then you can obviously point to plenty of examples from your favorite lefty sites defending GWB's decision. That would lend them some credibility … don't you think?
With all the bed pans they cleaned you'd think they'd recognize poo when they came across it, but I suppose once they got used to the smell, they didn't notice it anymore.

Funny thing is James, the 'tree rings' now show a cooling period, so the graph the IPCC was using shows a sudden halt to the tree ring line as soon as it started taking a dive. Lol – you have to laugh at the absurdity of it all!
I replied that perhaps they should go to their union reps and have them lobby Albany to
wastespend millions on little stickers of fun and fascinating facts, that they could stick on the bottom of the bed pans, so they could learn something while they work. They didn't respond positively to my suggestion.
Wow! I'm impressed. I adore reading "smart" writing, good writing.
At some point, don't forget to reference the AP's widely-syndicated, but lone story on Climategate by Seth Borenstein (sp?)
(who is referenced in the CRU email files) summarizing the situation for the mainstream public to the effect: don't look here; we checked for you; nothing to see….
Also, there is an email sent to an Australian scientist by Phil Jones (preceeding the CRU emails and not a part of them)
telling the man, essentially: "I've spent a lifetime on this. Why should I send you my data, when you only want to find a mistake, an error…?" That email preceeded the whole hockey stick mess, so this "scientific mentality" pre-dates even MBH.
That heaven for the tenacity of Steve McIntyre. So many — dare I say most? — would have collapsed under the weight, power, money, and ability to hide the establishment he confronted represented.
This piece is very very good. ….Lady in Red
Hmmm… There must be a bug in the blog software. My previous reply is missing.
Anyways, if you read what I wrote, I explicitly said 'that site' which refers to the americanthinkers. So, when their folks had an opportunity to demonstrate critical thinking prowess during the GWB propaganda machine's efforts to justify an immoral war – remember there were no WMDs – what did those americanthinker fols do? Did they correctly say the case was weak and reeked of bootstrapping? If not, they have little credibility and are useless as a reference.
If it's so basic, why can't you defend your own argument. You criticized GW on the basis of recent 11 year trends. And when called out on this, you run away from your argument and raise different ones. I'd like to see your response to my original criticism.
In that case, let them keep talking–it's awfully chilly.
Another post from the data-free zone.
That small blog was not the Air Vent but Climateaudit.org as this blog and its owner were mentioned over 100 times in the climategate emails.
I believe this is a misunderstanding; while they did not keep copies of the original data – they used data from observing stations and as I understand it, those stations still have the raw data.
From 1850 to 1920 or so, the 'Industrial Revolution was largely confined to one quadrant of the northern hemisphere straddling the North Atlantic. With such a small footprint that also contained the giant heat and carbon sink that is the Atlantic, how could the IR have contributed to global warming?
The data was not destroyed. The researchers did not keep their copies of what the measuring stations had, but the measuring stations still have to data I believe.
The list of used stations was deliberately NOT provided by Dr. Phil Jones, which makes replication of his work impossible
So Jim the Scientist were did all the CO2 go this year ?? After all its a greenhouse gas which infers a greenhouse effect IE a warmer planet not one in a deep freeze !!!
Proven science is not kept private and held behind close doors with only like minded having a look at the fudged data ( taking from warmer regions with colder regions left out) All data is put forth for all the world to see with an attemp to prove it wrong, when it can't be proven wrong then and only then can the Theory be accepted.. The CRU is the main clearing house for all of the worlds AGW science why can't we see the data, collection methods and computor models used..
The true deniers are the AGW folks!!!
No it was Air Vent not climateaudit
Has your comments module crashed?
Sadly, I am not in the mood to re-type my previous comment, except to say:
Smart writing, good writing. Good, clear thinking.
Congratulations. …Lady in Red
Just more wishful thinking on the part of the deniers. Hadley had its 15 minutes of fame. Get over the fact that it is no longer news. No one in their right mind pays attention to the fruitcake fringe. It's like the outrage over the Obama birth certificate. Really important to a small number of extremists.
The australian you mention is Warwick Hughes. Hughes had been after some of Jones's data since at least 2000.
The are some mails to Hughes from Jones in the Crutape letters.
The data was just a small portion of the global data, data from China, Australia and the Soviet Union, used in Jones's seminal 1990 paper. In 2002 McIntyre requested the same data and Jones promised to send it. "It was laying on a diskette somewhere. " In 2003 McIntyre published his paper which was critical of Mann, a Jones Co author. Mann went ballistic. In 2004 Hughes renewed his request for the data, sometime in July, and from Jones's replies it looks as if he was going to comply. The mails are cordial. On feb 12th 2005, McIntyre published his next paper critical of mann in the GRL. On feb 21 2005, briffa sends jones a collection of newsclippings about the bad press Mann was getting about not sharing data. Inspired perhaps Mann's behavior, jealous perhaps of Mann's coverage in the national news, ( mann was being criticized by the right wing press), eager to join his beleagured collegue in the fight against the evil skeptics, Jones wrote to Hughes on the very same day: "why should I give you the data when all you want to do is find something wrong with it"
people complain that we take the mails out of context. When you put them into context they get worse
be patient Charlie, the details of how the files got out there and discovered will come out.
I believe the New Science Movement won a huge battle but the 'war' continues with either climate warming or cooling evangelists 'adjusting' data, photos, monetary funds, heartstrings to seize control of our globe and mandate a subservient way of life.
I would like to see this new movement, of credible scientists, effectively use the mass communications avenues to champion short/mid term and long range viable planning that would strive to improve our stewardship of the earth and encourage realistic energy, technology solutions ideas and goals. Fostering and broadcasting these rational ideas and solutions would counter the watermelon-greenies, better inform the public, and encourage the free market to bring forth more cost-affordale energy savings products.
Much thanks to those brave individuals mentioned here and also to those choosing to remain in the background.
I've been reading some history books lately. I read about Abigail Adams waiting for Boston Harbor to unfreeze round about 1785. I read about John Law talk about the Bay of Calais in northern France freeze round about 1725. I found a New York times article written in 1904 about Boston Harbor freezing in 1904 for the first time since 1855. My great-grand father talked about horses crossing Halifax Harbour in NS. This has not been possible since the early 1900's.
What does it tell me. It tells me that global warming has been under way since about 1850. Perhaps it was horse manure that started global warming. If only they could have killed off those Clydsedales and used ponies instead, we wouldn't be listening to the crap we hear today. I knew this was a scam the first time I heard that CO2 makes up less than 3% of 1% of the atmosphere. It is just plain horsesense.
Very nice job on the piece Partick.
I'd like to thank you for your efforts in derailing the Obama/NEA Propaganda Ministry. In a rational world you would be mententioned in Pulitzer conversations.
It is reasuring to know that just in case, the CIA has our taxpayer funded spycams trained on any stray, rogue, isolated maniacal icebergs thrreatening the globe.
Thank you! …smile….
I hope all the whistleblowers donate their eventual Claims Fraud Act winnings to worthy charities…. in the arts…?
smile…. just to prove that the expose was done for the excitement in the pursuit of truth; that's all.
(In the interim, I do wish you a good lawyer.)
BTW, all recent emphasis is on the emails. When is somebody going to "explain" the Harry_Read_Me files for the
lay public? Is there only one…? Was actual code released?
May the force be with you! ….Lady in Red
Here is another:
WEATHER REPORT……………….
The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in
some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a
report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consul Ifft, at
Bergen , Norway . Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers
all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto
unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions
report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees
29 minutes. Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf
stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by
moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many
points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared. Very few seals
and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals
of herring and smelts, which have never before ventured so far north,
are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds. Within a few
years it is predicted that due to the ice melt the sea will rise and
make most coastal cities uninhabitable.
I'm sorry, I neglected to mention that this report was from
November 2, 1922 as reported by the AP and published in The
Washington Post.
And since then, we have been paying for it dearly!
This article is stupid, and written for stupid people.
The Voyager spacecrafts have provided evidence that our sun's magnetics and solar winds create a magnetic bubble around our solar system, called a 'heliosphere'. The Voyagers have also found an interstellar magnetic cloud just outside our heliosphere that is warping the heliosphere. NASA believes as this cloud compresses the heliosphere it will affect the terristrial climates within the solar system. – so, i guess now we need to tax the universe to cover the costs of increasing the magnetic and solar wind powers of the sun to counter-act this interstellar cloud's affecting our climate?? oh no, it just can't really be true-because it's concensus science and concluded that it can only be man affecting our climate.. much like it was once concensus and concluded that the earth was flat.
Aw take it easy on poor ol Jim Mac
The poor guy is seeing his entire belief system being flushed dow the toilet.
In a clockwise direction, you do live in the northern hemisphere don't you Jim the Scientist?
hmm – natural fluctuation eh.. this i think is very true. because i see it in every part of nature. even our breathing is very much the same natural process. – the falacy is that it should be constant to satisfy the needs and conviniences of humans.
This is just too good to let go. I hope you don't mind but I'm emailing it to some friends.
Please, use it as you see fit.
15,000 years ago the locations that would become Chicago, New York City, Canada, etc. were covered by ice more than a mile thick. Today they are not. That is climate change.
I'll believe in anthropogenic global warming when Al Gore, Jim Hansen, Mike Mann, Gavin Schmidt, Phil Jones, Keith Briffa, et al. reduce their respective carbon footprints to less than that of the average inhabitant of the planet Earth.
Scientist Jim and his fellow scientists would have way more credibility had they stepped forward and attempted to verify Mann's original hockey stick paper. The fact that that the first attempt to do so was by a retired geologist and skeptical economist several years after the fact shows that Scientist Jim's field of choice is seriously broken. When you read a paper by Mann et all , Scientist Jim, does it ever occur to you that the paper was not carried down from the mountain top by Moses and that, dare I suggest, it might be… wrong?
hee hee.. clever
Excellent! Truly creative and illustrative! I'm jealous that I didn't come up with this myself!
My boss is VERY tolerant. He is a warmer and I give him s#!t every chance I get. I mentioned the shift in Pacific currents coupled with low solar activity as a reason we are freezing our n#ts off, and naturally, it all fit the "theory". Love is truly blind.
Nice! Going into an email in a few minutes!
Sure is cold. Must be due to global bs.
A "universal" tax might be seen as a bit extreme. Maybe we should propose a "galactic" tax first, and work our way out from there…
Imagine how dangerous an overeducated Chicago street thug with a personal agenda can be. Don't have to look any further than the White House.
It's Gretzky, not Gretsky.
After getting some feedback regarding Spartacus having lost his fight and ending up crucified on the Appian Way, 'maatkare' and I decide that OUR rally cry is "Spartacus II, Payback is a Bitch"….
fortunately, anyone with a computer can keep this story alive by spending some time reading these piles of steaming "science" and spreading the word over all the media we have available to us. I'm still going through the 2nd half of them, and when done I will continue to post them out the blogosphere.
No data was lost in the faux climategate scandal – the data is still at the collecting sites.
"Minor nit. May be a typo, but I believe the start of the Industrial Revolution is generally pegged at 1750, not 1850."
That is true of the intellectual start of the industrial revolution. For instance, between 1750 and 1776 Watt and Banks combined the "Theory of Latent Heat" with the engineering ability of Watt, to produce the steam engine from the Newcomen air pressure pump. Newcomen's pump simply displaced air with steam, then cooled the steam to create a vacuum into which the pump's power piston was driven by external air pressure. Like the first chronometers, this was a triumph of craft and engineering experiment, not depending on science for guidance.
The combination of the scientific discovery of "latent heat" (heat of vaporization) with engineering was a first with Watt and Banks. However, the accelerating multiplication of applications of all the freedoms of action needed for a real industrial revolution was not in place before 1830-40 at the earliest. There were many other levels of action needed for a real revolution unless, of course, one uses the Fredrick Engels definition of steampower, railroads, and production lines, which "hunks of stuff" definition just coincidentally hid the point that socialism is reactionary against the market freedoms needed for the industrial revolution. Toynbee's definition, published in 1884, looked at far subtler levels of action, and would have been a good beginning to a multi-level definition, if the man hadn't quickly worked himself to death helping the poor of London.
It took at least till 1850 for that acceleration to really begin burning the amounts of coal in steam engines and elsewhere that had a chance at warming things up, …in theory anyway. At any rate, 1850 is when we started to leave the Little Ice Age behind.

Tom Billings
Not really, because this is nothing more than asserting balance requires flat-earthers and round-earthers deserve equal time in geology textbooks.
But the main point is that the americanthinkers is a rightwing site and I'm amused at their grandstanding about being 'thinkers' and I don't really see the point in someone from the Right appealing to a phony-intellectual rightwing site for support in their attempts at universally deamonizing everyone on the Left.
Oh My! Did this 'higher power' sit idly by on 9-11? So I assume we can safely conclude they are anti-global-warming and anti-american?
You are correct in assuming a relationship between solar variation/sunspots and earth temperatures., and this is indeed being studied. The problem is global temperatures have been changing more rapidly than solar variations.
you mean those stations sitting right next to air conditioning units, right?
Not sure about that, but the point is the original data was not destroyed.
Seig Heil!
I have lost confidence unless I see/hear something.
Time for them to hit the NEW news media that will report these things. . .sorry, don't mean to be contradictory but
time has come to produce tangilbles. I have been anticipating Breitbart's BIG ENvironment Site, as announced last year, as an outstanding platform to mention short/long term goals and inspire free market solutions. . .at the very least, start building a startegy — away from the algore and the watermelon-greenies.
any one ever superimpose a graph of solar flair activity over the so called 'hockey stick' graph? haven't we entered a real 'slow' period of solar activity over the last few years that just so happens to coincide with the halt in 'global warming' temps since 2000 or so? But what the heck do I know-why bother looking at the hottest thing in our solar system to see if there is any correlation to the temperature outside my house….
MacWell the seer and knower of everything!
Hey Jim, the uh, scientist? You, and your comrades can take all of your scientific nonsense and use it for toilet paper. Your problem Jm, is that you are so arrogant, you believe you can speak for God. Oh, I know, you probably don't believe in God, so He isn't a problem. By the same token, we the people don't believe in you anymore. You have shot your load, and it came up dry, you bozos have blown it, no more money for you or any of your cohorts. To think, all of that education wasted. Oh? and have a great day.
Thanks again to you Steven, please keep up the fight.
Happy New Year to you…
[...] Read the rest of the story here. [...]
The World is experiemcing one of the harshest winters in the last century and a half this is becoming clearer everyday.
Well here is something to chew on for all the global cooling deniers out there. Real scientists will tell you, by far the largest factor in the earths temperature is the Sun. For all the IPCC worshippers that would be that big bright thing in the sky. Anyone who has seriously studied the sun knows it generally runs in eleven year periods of solat activity called .Schwabe cycles. Essentially it is solar as well as volcanic activity that ultimately coltrols the earths temperature.
As real scientists will tell you, there has been a slight cooling in the climate for the past eleven years, this cooralated with a lower amont of sun spots and flares in the past eleven years. The interesting thing is, so far there has been no real increase in solar activity yet, we better hope it does. When these Schwabe cycles don't alternate between high and low solar activity, that generally means we are enter another longer solar cycle called a Maunder Minimum.
It's not old news for academics at all. Sure that kind of stuff goes on to an extent, sometimes, with some people, on occasion. But the reason peer review has worked for so long is that it's been reasonably successful in keeping the tribalism and pettiness to a minimum, and maintained a culture of decorum and rational open-mindedness.
So keep that in mind when the CRU defenders tell you that this is how science is typically done. it's not. It does happen, but it sure ain't typical.
And one other thing, if you hear a scientist defend their behaviour, ask that scientist if they have ever tried to remove someone from an editorial board for the simple reaons that the person had a different theoretical orientation, or if they have ever thwarted an FOI request. Then see if they still defend the CRU guys as typical.
At some point I'll have a crack at the harry read me. But let me give you my view of it as it stands. The fundamental reason that we request the data AS USED and the code AS USED to produced the published papers is so that we do not have to SPECULATE about what data was used and what code was used.
We call this provenance. Think of it as a chain of custody. A scientist publishes a graph or table. Fine. Show me the data and code used to produce it. It's a fundamental QA check. Today they dont do this. So, we dont know what data and code was used to produce the global temperature index. And so, we don't know what code the harry read me refers to or what that code was used for. On it's face, however, we know this.
1. The temperature station database was a mess. This confirms what we suspected when got responses
back from our FOIA. Either CRU and jones were sloppy or lying or both. Both I suspect.
2. Some Scientists write code that is of poor engineering quality. This confirms what we see in comments made by jones in mails. Confirms what I know from personal experience. Confirms what any software engineer who downloads NASA's GISSTEMP will tell you ( its ugly, nasty stuff)
Here is the problem. We suspect ( now confirmed) that these guys dont know how to do a proper engineering job of these things. We would like to determine by inspection WHETHER OR NOT these poor practices result in substantial errors, minor errors, or no errors. We can't do that without access to the data AS USED and the code AS USED. All we can say, being circumspect, is that we have probable cause to be concerned.
Challenger do not go with throttle up. check the damn O rings. Please.
People want me to scream fraud. I wont. They want me to say, the science hasnt been proven wrong. Well DUH. You have to give up the data and code to to prove that.
One of the interesting things to come out of climategate is the lack of comments from warmists on the sceptics blogs. Over the last four weeks, they have all but disappeared. Most critics now seem to be constructive in pointing to flaws in the data or logic so it can be corrected. I think this is what is called peer review. May it long continue.
These blogs are good but really, as we say in Australia, it's a lot of like-minded people peeing in one another;s pockets. I can see global warming is occurring from the temperature gtaphs and I can see CO2 concentrations are increasing. I'm a PhD in biochemistry/molecular biology and what I can't see is the general populace questioning or even apparently understanding the science. The guys at the Climatic (not Climate) Research Centre have done a disservice to science and I have no confidence that the published data on climate change hasn't been manipulated and that is a scary thought
When requested to provide the list of stations used the request was refused. Details are available at climateaudit.org
Dr Venkman, is that you?
That is another BLATANT LIE being touted! It doesn't fit in very well at all with theories of a warming planet and global climate change.
The IPCC report, which is the Bible of the warmist-alarmists, says nothing about predictions of severe winter weather. Nothing, Zero, Nada, Zilch!
On the other hand what it does say about snow predictions:
"21st century regional changes
Snow cover area is projected to contract.
Widespread mass losses from glaciers and reductions in snow cover over recent decades are projected to accelerate throughout the 21st century..
Over most land areas, warmer and fewer cold days and nights, warmer and more frequent hot days and nights. Likelihood of future trends ..: VIRTUALLY CERTAIN"!
And the facts? Snow cover for the Northern Hemisphere in December 2009 was the 2nd highest in the 44 years since the records started, 2.66 million Km2 more than the average.
http://climate.rutgers.edu/snowcover/table_rankin...
And I dont think you are having the VIRTUALLY CERTAIN fewer cold days and nights promised in the 21st century!
It is time and it is coming, good Americans will stand up and defeat the socialists now calling the shots. Our system is fine it does not need fundamental change unless of course we are talking those who run the system.
I would like to nail the lie being touted by the alarmists that Global Warming is responsible for or compatable with the extreme cold weather and snow you are having right now. Its is NOT!
If this were true would not the IPCC report, which is the Bible of the warmist-alarmists, says something about this? The IPCC report says nothing about predictions of severe winter weather. Nothing, Zero, Nada, Zilch! On the other hand what it does say about snow predictions:

Part 1
The emails neither prove nor disprove AGW, but certainly indicates that the science is not settled.
The peer review process that many in the AGW camp hold so high has shown to be flawed and bias in favour of AGW.
A number of major studies that support AGW look to be seriously flawed as shown on CA.
Anyone, no matter which side they on, who refuses to provide supporting data and code (as is required under the scientific process) should not have their paper published. Saying the data is confidential is no excuse.
I commend a number of promenant climate scientists in the AGW camp that have stood up and said that what they see in the emails is wrong and it time to get away from politics and back to science.
Part 2
Those who use words like "deniers" , and "oil company lackeys" are obviously not interested in serious debate.
As is required for medical papers, authors in journals should be made to document who is sponsoring their research. Energy companies have contributed to CRU research and Dr. R.K. Pachauri, the head of the IPCC, is involved with coal power stations and oil companies (NTPC and GloriOil). But I see no critisism from AGW supporters on this.
Let the real debate begin.
"Not entirely the “death of global warming” as many have claimed .. What was triggered .. was the death of unconditional trust in the scientific peer review process, and the maturing of a new movement – that of peer-to-peer review."
True. And what has also been triggered is the avalanche of doubt about Global Warming among the general public. And what might trigger the beginning of the end, of Global Warming, is mother nature itself. Which pays scant regard to hockey sticks, climatic models or political laws to control her.
See, our Gav is a good boy really he was just trying to help Lucia, honest.
For anyone to suggest that our Gav was only interested in his nibs and his other mates would be wrong , he's solid see.
[...] peer review to Peer-to-peer review, part 1. There are in fact numerous reasons, unrelated to ClimateGate, that are making some scientists (and [...]
Science Fiction from the Climate Research Unit.
The CRU is has not been practicing the scientific method for almost two decades. The scientific method requires that the researcher publish all the original data, models and procedures needed for a skeptical analysis of any of their work. Since they are not using the scientific method then they simply are not doing science, they are writing fiction.
Ponds and Fleishman may have been wrong about cold fusion, but they were at least real scientists. They did their experiments, published the results and their data, procedures and description of the apparatus and the methods. They where shown to be in error, fine, but they were still scientific in their work. The outputs from the CRU are in comparison junk, so I ask, why are these fictional 'research' papers allowed to remain in the realm of scientific publications? Why do people continue to quote the CRU as if they were the work of Albert Einstein rather than the work of Mark Twain?

This post is very insightful in pointing out that the "peer review" process, or at least the ability of warmists to wave peer review as a talisman to ward off criticism has been changed by Climategate. Warmists would chronically tout papers that supported their position as pure science and above challenge because they were peer reviewed. The papers may have contained unproven hypotheses and untested models but because they were peer reviewed the warmists felt they were scientifically rigorous. Climategate demonstrated to all that the peer review process in climate science was corrupted.
Even in non-corrupted areas of science peer review does not insure that a published paper contains truth. The posting below recounts how there are multiple contradictory versions of string theory in physics journals, all of which passed peer review and virtually all of which must be false. It describes what peer review is and is not and states that merely passing peer review is a very bad basis for making public policy.

I'm watching that drivel right now (I've seen it before) on "The Last Days of Earth". The History Channel used to be my goto channel, sometimes 24 hrs. I hate it, now. I would like DirecTV to remove it. It is so obvious. I constantly have to stay on top what the 16 year old is learning right now and destroy all the crap he hears from barely qualified Literature majors masquerading as Climatologists in High School.
Earth2100 is complete socialist indoctrination pure and simple. That storyboard stuff about how bad the suburbs are, evil cars, your parents are stupid, uneducated and wrong, give up your freedom of movement to exist in glorious Soviet collective City of ________ !! God, I hate the History Channel, now. I think I'll go downstairs and convert another CAR-15 to full auto. Yeah, yeah….come and get me BATF.
I am getting a great belly laugh at the Goreacle, though.
A couple e-mails, scarecrow?
Jim, are you pretty?
Really, c'mon now, man SING!!
"I feel pretty…….Oh, so pretty"
Yeah, there ya go! You know the words…..
You may wish it were so, but that does not make it so. I gang of self congratulatory skeptics may feed off the detritus of their own destructive recklessness for a while… but facts will intervene soon enough, although possibly too late to avoid more damage than was really necessary. Yes, we will remember these names; in infamy!
Well, that would be all the data except that kooky RAW DATA that was conveniently DELETED!
Other than that, I'm sure it's all there. Yeah. You bet.
Amazing how those substations get moved closer to "heat islands", isn't it. Kinda kooky about all that Siberian data not making the final Gorepeer review, huh?
Yeah…….
and some have been moved or closed since then.
Wonder why?
[...] Climaquiddick set one off? If so, it’s not just a new, but a real (as opposed to politically ideologically driven) [...]
If raw data is still available from the stations, then it can be independently analyzed; maybe not the exact same subset of stations, but if there is a trend, it should show up anyways.
As I am one of those un-enlighten types who believe in a creator. And I believe God has a good sense of humor and he must be laughing at us now. We humans, as a species, are so full of ourselves as to think we can change the weather. Now that is funny.
Global Climate Change, Global Warming, call it what you want is a lie, a hoax, a big farce. Follow the money and you get the answer of why. These scientist need a crisis to fund their research. If everything was OK, where would they get lunch money money from? Al Gore stands to be the first green billionaire. This guy is just mentally ill. The Democrats never saw a tax they didn't like. Biggest bunch of lying losers. And the polar bears are going to be alright.
And as to Global Warming, I look for it this happen this spring, as I always do. Longer, hotter summers, bring it on.
. . .And what is wrong with like minded people sharing opinions, conversations? By that logic –the world would only need one blog, one website, one newspaper, one tv station, etc? So I guess Breitbart should fold up his tent and go away?
Is that what scientific academia teaches?. . . I know it doesn't – healthy conversation is productive!
How do you know that posters, are not doing pro-actively doing something about our beliefs — once away from this discourse?
Congrats on your academic achievements — however, you should not disparage citizens with different degrees or varying education.. . especially with so much access to information through cyberspace. Also, if only 'scientists' can have valid opinions — why is there no consensus on this topic? Sorry, there seems to be a lot of geo-political mixed in with the climate topic.
As we say in USA – everyone's vote counts — and there is no monetary or educational requirement to enter the voting booth. Hooray for conversations, dialogues in sharing opinions, ideas and learning from each other. . . may our right of free speech never be taken away!
In the late 60's and early seventys, the "scientists" were spewing over population and a new ice age!
WattsUpWithThat was the blog that carried the traffic that really launched ClimateGate.
WUWT's traffic trippled after it posted ClimateGate on Nov 19th. See Alexa traffic etc.
http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/www.wattsupwiththat...
Traffic ClimateAudit.org similarly shot up. However, CA's server could not bear the traffic, forcing Steve McIntyre to first post on Lucia's Blackboard, then set up a temporary WordPress blog ClimateAudit mirror before migrating his site to another server system.
Traffic to WUWT consequently increased traffic to RealClimate.
Note the major changes in Technorati authority and blog ranking.
WUWT is now #70 (It has been up to 24)
http://technorati.com/search?q=Wattsupwiththat&am...
Climate Audit now 683
http://technorati.com/search?q=climateaudit&r...
Realclimate dropped behind to 2471
http://technorati.com/search?q=Realclimate&re...
Those three sites capture the major traffic and transitions due to ClimateGate
I think I would be happier if we had ala carte programming options from cable, and I had to pay $5/mo per channel. There just isn't that much I watch and enjoy regularly- FoxNews, my local news affiliate, TCM, a handful of others. I don't need or want this other crap.
Best wishes to the U.K. I was in London for a about a week this summer, lovely place, great people.
We Americans, like many others worldwide, are on to this scam and will not be sheep led to slaughter.
This APG sham is economic suicide. Many western countries have been doing yoemans work to protect the enviroment – there is distinction- the majority of disasters belong to the former USSR and the Eastern Bloc (Chernobyl. etc.) not us.
The climate changes – always has – always will. Taxing the working people of the western powers like the U.S. and U.K. and sending our money east, through the rabbit hole aka the U.N. does NOTHING to stop climate change.
God speed to you and all in the U.K. and we acknowledge and are thankful for the shoulder to shoulder help in the Middle East.
I just recieved this email from Prof Chris Rapley of the science museum in London"-
Dear Mr Edwards
Thank you for your comment about our PROVE IT! exhibit and website.
The role of the Science Museum is to communicate established scientific evidence on a range of contemporary issues as well as to conserve and display the nation's scientific heritage. Its exhibitions and outputs are advised and supported by independent scientific experts – in the case of Prove It!, experts from the Met Office, Overseas Development Institute, Imperial College, London School of Economics, Open University, Oxford University, University of York and the National Oceanography Centre.
At the Science Museum we have examined the scientific evidence have concluded that climate change is happening and that human activities are a significant cause. Based on this evidence, we believe that urgent action is necessary to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. The evidence that climate change is happening and that human activities are a significant cause has also been judged compelling by, amongst many, the most recent reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (http://www.ipcc.ch/) and the science academies of America, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Russia, and the United Kingdom (see Joint Academies' Statement on Climate Change: http://www.nationalacademies.org/onpi/06072005.pd...
As part of our mission – to make sense of the science which shapes our lives – we are committed to continuing to engage the public with the science of climate change. To this end we are planning a major new climate change gallery to launch in June this year. There will also be an associated website, outreach activities and events delivered over a three year programme. I hope you will have an opportunity to engage with the new project.
Funny how all the proof comes from data from the CRU! I replied politely (my original comment was a bit rude) and pointed hime at this site and to the EU referendum site for a character reference for the director of the IPCC. Keeping gentle pressure on those sucked in by this scam is good.
Patrick, you left us hanging. Please finish this and post it as one post. Fantastic work.
Man just think where we would be without blogs. Dan Rather would be riding high, no ClimateGate (the silence of the MSM ion this is deafening), I am sure there are a dozen other examples…
- 8c here at the moment, warrington uk,glad i found this site,we need to stop this agw scam, and you are the guys to do it..
"A typical" of a one party mind set from you Elitist Leftist!!__A little history for you__1st- Saddam signed a treaty after the golf war, he broke that treaty the 1st time he shot at one of are planes in the no fly-zone, after that we could and should have gone in and taking him out but Pres Clinton ( you know the draft dodger http://www.1stcavmedic.com/bill-clinton-draft.htm ) didn't have the ba**'s to send troops in and bombed a asprin factory insted..____2nd- yes indeed they were WMD's in Iraq http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=38... but people like you still refuse to see or look for the evidence.. I guess 500 tons of yellow cake uranium to you means saddam was getting ready to have a big birthday cake- http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25546334/____But you will stay blinded by your non-willingness to seak the truth yourself, no insted you will read one sided blogs for all of your so called truth and stay blinded by you idioligy
that's interesting. i wonder if they'll try to use that one in court some day? "I'm sorry, but I refuse to answer that question, however legitimate it may appear to be, on the grounds that it has not been posed by a peer-approved scientist."
Personally, I liked the university. They gave us money and facilities, we didn't have to produce anything! You've never been out of college! You don't know what it's like out there! I've *worked* in the private sector. They expect *results*.
as he fell thru a hole in the ice…
"the AGW side is pretty much dogma-free" sure, if by "pretty much dogma-free" you mean utterly and completely corrupted by a pervasively alarmist, anti-capitalist, ultra-heavy-handed governmental interventionist dogma. if not, then not so much…
and btw- acid rain was a pollution problem that, outside of heavy industry, had relatively little opposition. the 'ozone hole' was actually another b___s___ scam. so your big examples of where we 'denialists' have been proven wrong are unpersuasive.
go to http://www.surfacestations.org for example, look up the station in Henderson County, NC. we're a very rural county, but our temp station is right next to a parking lot in the biggest commercial district in the biggest town in the area. it's not even remotely close to being objectively representative of this area.
not to mention i've read where Briffa only used 3, count 'em, THREE, trees. and if it were actually 300, i suspect that would still be too small to constitute a statistically valid sample for this sort of work.
The most effective response to this kind of drivel on the part of the science museum is this. It is known that the Piltdown man persisted as a fraud for nearly 40 years and was still cited as a reliable set of remains in an article in Nature, the journal which ironically published Mann's results, years after it was debunked by dating methods. In part the fraud persisted because researchers were not give direct access to the remains. I find the same methods at play in climate science. None of the reports, not the IPCC, not the science academies of the countries stated, have examined the bones of climate science. None. They cannot. They cannot because in many cases the actual data has not been archived or selectively archived. They cannot have examined the raw temperature data and adjustments made to it because the custodian of that data, Phil Jones, has claimed that he lost it. And where he has not lost it, he refuses to disclose it because of confidentiality agreements, which he claims have also been misplaced. So at its core you have an "sketch" of a Piltdown Mann. A Shroud of Turin. The bones have gone missing, and if they hadn't gone missing you still couldn't see them because of legal contracts. Only the faithful have access to the relic. And if you try to use the FOIA law to trump these legal contracts, Jones would likely destroy the data, as he threatened.
Yep, the MSM is dead, long live the new alternative media!
And this is it!
If Algore would just SHUT HIS MOUTH maybe all of the atmospheric gasses would go away!

Climategate was a "Nietzsche" moment for the warmist public. Climate Change (AGW) has taken on the aspect of a religion, and religions die hard. This has always been about money and power. The climate has little to do with it!
In my opinion the systems needs drastic changes, and soon.
The reason we have situations like this is because the federal government in Washington has deemed itself pretty much free of any constitutional restraints. They no longer view We The People as their boss, but rather as children who need to be guided, controlled, forced to behave.
And on the upside they get filthy stinkin' rich in the process. And now they tell us they need to take trillions of dollars of our own personal property – the fruits of our labor – to control the weather.
Control the weather? This is how far we've gone from the Bill of Rights to they can control the weather. And if we're not smart enough to let them do it, the world will end.
The US Constitution specifically states what the government has the authority to do, and it very specifically states that if they aren't granted an authority, they are forbidden to touch it. And I don't recall anything about controlling the weather in the US Constitution
http://topics.law.cornell.edu/constitution
Specifically, Article 1, Sections 8 & 9, and the Amendments, particularly the first 10.
The founding fathers were well aware of what unrestrained power would lead to, so they did everything they could to restrain it. That's the reason behind separation of powers. The three branches would be so busy fighting among themselves, they wouldn't have time to bother We The People.
Well wouldn't you know, they figured out how to get along just fine, and focus their efforts on stripping power and wealth from We The People.
I think it's about damn time We The People put a stop to all of this and start rolling it way, way back.

Pretty much eye to eye are we.
Cool, then let's get at it!
I'm not suggesting any thing illegal or violent. What I am suggesting is we use the arena of free ideas to open exchange views, information, and bring as much education and experience as we can to bare on these people. We can stop them at the ballot box, but its going to take convincing and awful lot of people that it's in their best interest to stop demanding free hand outs from government.
That ain't going to be easy, but I'm willing ti do my part. And this is a start.
http://www.norcalblogs.com/watts/weather_stations...
Mat, I am in North Florida (Tallahassee), and heard on the radio today (Saturday, Jan 9) that two people died from the cold in Florida last night. One died from exposure in a car with a dead battery, and the other died when he brought a lawnmower engine inside to heat his unheated home. Repeat: These two people died in FLORIDA!
THIS is the danger of global warming activism. We heard all autumn that we were going to have one of the mildest winters on record. We are experiencing one of the coldest… and people are dying because we have been unprepared.
Not me… I was prepared, made sure my heater was functioning properly before the cold hit. I'm one of the people who has been watching the activity– or lack of it– on the sun.
I've just been wondering if the clowns who predicted a "mild" winter should be held responsible for the deaths?
Personally, I'm ticked off enough to want to hang them.
There is a new meme being propagated by believers in AGW: “Climategate is just some private emails taken out of context; after all, who would not find something in their own emails they would not like to have shown to the world?”
In reality, anyone who actually reads some of the emails [just google "east anglia emails searchable"] cannot but admit in their heart of hearts that the falsification of results, character assassination of other scientists, conspiracy to hide or destroy data mean that *nothing* produced by the CRU or “The Hockey Team” can be regarded as having any validity.
Their own foolishness is quite astounding. Who, with any sense, would continue to discuss in their emails how to flout FOI laws, even after their emails had been made the subject of FOI requests?
This AGW mess is the hoax of the century. This is bigger than "Piltdown Man."
What I'm waiting for is for all the starry-eyed, vacant stares that are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs in universtities the world over studying various "Earth Science" disciplines looking to contribute to saving mankind from mankind to suddenly wake up and discover that they've been had. Who are they going to sue? Perhaps the university, the university is the entity directly profiting from the AGW myth. Perhaps they can sue the lerned professors that are on all the papers that they've been studying. Perhaps they can sue the politicians and the media personalities that have glamorized the nobility of the lone researcher. Et Cetra, Et Cetra Ad Infinitum, Ad Nauseium.
This rates right up there for "Phlogiston Chemistry" and "Phrenology."
Well for Americanthinker to side with the left against the war would be to disreguard history!!
1st- Saddam broke his treaty ( the one he signed after Desert Storm) when he shot at our planes over the No Fly zone).. Pres Clinton bomb an asprin factory insted of doing the right think and bombing Saddam's arse, but Pres Clinton was a draft dodger so what would you expect?? http://www.learnoutloud.com/Catalog/History/Milit...
2nd- Saddam Violated 14 UN sanctions everyone of these was a reason to go to war and take him out
3rd- WMD's were found in Iraq unless you can tell me another reason for 500 tons of Yellow Cake Uranium http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25546334/ along with plenty of other WMD's http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=38...
4th- Pres Clinton said most of the same as GWB stated http://www.cnn.com/US/9812/16/clinton.iraq.speech...
5th- The Democrates were all for the Iraq war untill they thought the could beat GWB in an election http://archives.cnn.com/2002/ALLPOLITICS/10/11/ir...
Do yourself a favor and reread history for yourself and stop listening/reading the Elite Leftist blogs as they have no clue about the real history or they just flat out lie to you..
PS. I did write this once but I don't see it and this is differant then the 1st if everyone can see it but me lol
Yep, they have the flanks. Go for the soft middle.
Have you ever been in a conversation with a handful of people who basically agree they're all liberal? Nothing big, gang at a bar, dinner party, what ever, and one moon bat starts spouting off?
Confront them politely with facts, reason and logic. You'll never convince them, but watch the ones listening who realize you aren't a modern liberal caricature of right. They'll be the ones who give you a quick nod that, yes that person was a nut.
That's the soft middle. The ones who only vote and think democrat because that's all they've ever known. Trust me, there's tons of them, I know, I used to be one. I remember listening to this blow hard crap and thinking 'do they really expect me to believe this?'
Yeah, you would think there would be great utility and appreciation for a channel which educated people on real, factual history, and Lord knows there's plenty of it to make great programming of! They can't get Ken Burns' "The Civil War"? What about "Band of Brothers?" All that World at War stuff. The American revolution. I don't care- let's see Chinese history- I could never get that Han/Ming/dynasty stuff straight in college; maybe if I see it a few more times, I'll learn it. I would LOVE nothing but factual history presented!
But somehow, every other show is about the Bermuda Triangle, UFOs, cryptobiology or Leftist pap.
So much potential, so much disappointment. EXACTLY like the Obama administration.
I listened to a semi-public talk given recently by a woman named Kristie Ebi, she was/is a contributor to the GW debate. and gets paid to be so,….. A lot of money.
The audience raised questions about the "climategate" stuff and she basically said, move on nothing to see here, and that it will blow over and that it was scientists doing things the peons would not understand.
It is disgraceful that this has not been taken up by the so called real media, and as I sit here in freeezing conditions reading a report about the explosion of polar bear numbers, and the huge increase in the antaric ice cap and the way that the same variations are being seen on other plants I think to myself theses scientists are self protecting, disgrace to those who came before and did science for science not for money
HC is convinced the world will end in 2012, yet they hedge the bet by showing a program about how, if it doesn't, we'll screw it all up by 2100.
OMG, you can't make up stuff this funny.
OMG, bill, find yourself some old aerosol cans and start spraying!
BTW, we're not supposed to be the leaders anymore. No more "American exceptionalism"- Obama decreed it so. We're going to have to sit on our hands for the next three years and give the Islamic terrorists a head start in regroupinng, establishing the old Caliphate, getting the nuclear warheads amassed. Meanwhile, we'll be catching up to European levels of Socialism. It's gonna be hard to right the ship again, but I look forward to being part of the crew.

Oh, and I wish you continued good luck, patience and vigilance with the 16 yr old!
So true about History Channel going over to the "darkside"…what a waste – of course UFO's, Sasquatch and Pawn Shops are now history…..if you all have History International it's much better programing – actual history. UFO's hee hee…
It's too bad H.C. went P.C., real history teaches the EVIL that is liberalism/socialism/communism when presented through an unfiltered eye.
I had this from the beginning…
How could you assess the methodology used to insure the accuracy of the thermometers used in the first measurements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries…?
And then you use tree-rings as a methodology of measurement…for anything else except tree age and local conditions…?
There's a term for this that should have been used from the beginning…bull$hit…
Since St. Gore the Charlatan has the AGW "pope" position locked up already, I guess Jim the Scientist and the Elite Leftist will have to compete for the number two spot – "Grand Inquisitioner". Whoever wins can purge the other for "insufficient socialist zeal" as they did in the old Soviet Union. AGW is almost as discredited as socialism – and after the next elections, there will be a number of unemployed socialists from Congress looking for work. I know – let's send them to the CRU! They can't do any harm there, since everyone knows it's a pseudoscientific agency now, and we wouldn't have to pay for their food, shelter and medical care as if we just jailed them.
You've got it right. Nuanced and interesting. To a very small and inconsequential crowd. As bad as it looked, the Hadley thing has had its 15 minutes of fame. On the plus side it will prompt far greater transparency than existed before. But all this baloney about it being the death of a well established theory is just an enormous amount of wishful thinking. Also on the plus side, the fringe got a lot of exposure that showed it to be a group that, once you get beneath the veneer of "science" is just a bunch of people who start from the paranoia that the idea of man made climate change is socialism, perpetrated by commie climate scientists. Once firm in that bizarre and nonsensical political judgment, they search for every bit of spin and propaganda that supports their ideology, and ultimatel pervert science.
You failed to mention in your account (and something which I am sure Gavin pointed out to you) is that the blog he runs, along with Mike Mann and others, was broken into and an attempt made to post the emails and a fake front page article — the same article which was posted as a comment on The Air Vent, JeffId's blog.

It's not that the hypoxia resulting from the warmers having their heads so far in their asses has cause brain damage…the Hell it isn't!
Jim – A scientist said:
"anthropogenic global warming is quite real because the massive amount of data we have says it is."
And would the data you refer too be the UAH and RSS Satellite Data, (which have an accuracy to 1/100 Degree C) which both show a cooling trend since 1998, or the "forgeable" discredited CRU thermometer data which shows a flat temperature trend since 1998? Massive factoids required please!
"We would like to determine by inspection WHETHER OR NOT these poor practices result in substantial errors, minor errors, or no errors."
If there are faults in the engineering, programming, methodology, etc., then the results are flawed/tainted- virtually by definition. If someone accidentally ends up at the correct answer (for anything from a grade school math test question to some arcane question of quantum physics) in spite of faulty data & processes, it cannot be seriously considered as a valid conclusion. As an admittedly imperfect analogy, if the 10 day forecast calls for 60 & sunny, then changes 3 times over the next week and a half, but eventually turns out to be 60 & sunny, the meteorologist doesn't get to claim, "See, I was right all along!"
what part of the data & science has likely been cooked in order to create your so-called "well established theory" are you not getting? none of these folks are complying with requests for the raw data, codes, methodologies, etc. (in many cases blatantly ignoring/stalling legal FOIA demands) that resulted in your so-called "well established theory". that means they've got something to hide.
Hard to believe that even with the "Hockey stick graph" anyone would BLAME MAN… (Except the MANN!)
Who was it, H.L. Menken that said, "No one ever went broke underestimating the STUPIDITY of the American people.."
Maybe we should add no one ever went "bust" underestimating the stupidity of people in general.
Even the most ARDENT of GoreBull warming enthusiasts knows that CO2 concentrations (statistically significant) DID NOT INCREASE until after WWII. Thus we have 1890 to 1945 with a "significant" GoreBullwarming according to Mann and Briffa.

Please.
The leading so-called "skeptics," McIntyre and McKitrick — mentioned numerous times by the paranoid climate scientists in the CRU emails — are apolitical. McIntyre doesn't tolerate politics on his site, and he neither denies or accepts the AGW theory of global warming; he simply says there is not enough verifiable information to make the judgment — but he, McKitrick and the others mentioned have devoted many hours of their time, at their own expense, in the attempt to gain enough knowledge through access to the data used by the CRU crew. As a result, they've been continually (and, as the CRU leak illustrated, intentionally) thwarted in their efforts.
Nice smear attempt. Try again.

"Isn't it rather unnerving that Mann and Schmidt both look like nightclub bouncers? "
My one regret over the past couple of years is that we should have all kept a copy of legitimate posts we made on Real Climate (sic) only to have Gavin Schmidt delete them. I have often thought the site to be the most censored in the whole debate (though the BBC and Guardian newspaper run a close second!).
The moderators on the site took on the dictator role with relish and I find it refreshing that the "delete" is not used on the critical sites. I would love to see what so got under their skin!

Thank you for explaining Mr. Obama's birth certificate … which he has spent over $1 million in legal fees to keep hidden.
It is important that he produce it, because the East Anglia CRU temperature readings are written on the back of the birth certificate.
It was them CaveMen, driving around in their SUV's that ended the last Ice Age.
The main stream media just accepted the lies from the scientists about man made GW and man made CG without questioning the conclusions of the scientists. The dishonest and corrupt reporters not once questioned the basis for the conclusions of the scientists. The conclusions fit the agenda and the template of the corrupt and dishonest reporters, that white man was the cause of all evil in the world. No critical thinking skills were exhibited by the dishonest and corrupt reporters. They took the press releases from the dishonest and corrupt scientists and just printed the words. No criticism. No thinking. No challenges. Nothing but propaganda from the dishonest and corrupt reporters.
There is some recent weaseling, in an article by Mann and others in Science Magazine, 27 Nov p.1256, "Global Signatures and Dynamical Origins of the Little Ice Age and Medieval Climate Anomaly", where they acknowledge some local climate anomalies that might be construed as warming. A letter to Science, understandably rejected for publication, said this:
Even if they mandate its name become "Medieval Climate Anomaly", this is a welcome departure from the previous opinion of his colleague (Overpeck?), if the released emails are accurate, that it needed to be "got[ten] rid of". Welcome even if they allege it to be a merely local phenomenon. Perhaps his moderate current posture means that simple renaming will be sufficient for his purposes.
I was disappointed that the (podcast) interviewer did not inquire of Mann his opinion of the not insubstantial evidence for the existence of a corresponding warm period in Russia, China, Pakistan, North America, and Patagonia.
I believe we should respectfully request that Science magazine consider reviewing not only his previous publications in their journal in light of the University of East Anglia material, but also the rejected papers submitted by authors previously disparaged or intimidated by this cabal, including but not limited to Steve McIntyre, Roger Pielke, John Christy, Roy Spencer, Anthony Watts, Craig Loehle and Richard Lindzen. It seems to me that a moral debt has been incurred by the choir boys of the AGW priesthood, and that penance must be said and amends must be made.
I wish I'd seen this earlier.

I personally developed a product in my industry that absolutely everyone said could not work. But we had a new variable to add in, and stupid newbie that I was, I decided to try it. Shock, awe, and jealousy. Also much gratitude from our customers, and a ton of profit. Well we owned that , because nobody else thought to put these things together since evryone knew it wouldn't work. No one ever figured it out. Until the EPA came along and declared that we had to tell publically if a certain chemical was present in a product. Yup. My secret weapon was this chemical. And suddenly all the competition figured it out in 15 minutes. Now it's the standard solution to the original problem, and anyone can supply it, and evryone knows what it is.
I heard this on FOX the other day and I couldn't keep all the deets in my head. Thanks so much for putting this report out for us all to see. I'm still laughing for three days now. Sadly, I cannot convince my son that we are not down to the last handful of polar bears now, he's convinced that they're almost gone. Now I'll have to go searching for proof just to turn him around. I hate public school. Thankfully my kids had 8 years of old fashioned Catholic school. Once I dig up the info he's at least equipped to deal with it. Now I'll have this to show him as well. Thanks so very much.

I DON'T need the science to tell me that the Earth, our Planetary systems, and the climate is in trouble. And I don't need studies to tell me that we are behind it.
I look at the ocean, that has eaten away 6 KM of land where I live in the last two decades, I look at the empty mountain streams that, when I was young, were over my head all year round, and I look at our collective consciousness as a civilization: we now live off of Nature, not IN nature.
That's enough to convince me. The science is wrong to begin with: They are trying to quantify and isolate what is a multi-cause and multi-effect phenomena.
And the politicians are wronger: they are trying to deny that a problem even exists.
