CNN published an excerpt of Soledad O’Brien’s candid memoir, The Next Big Story, in which she recounts her offense at being racially profiled by Jesse Jackson:
Today he is angry because CNN doesn’t have enough black anchors. It is political season. There are billboards up sporting Paula Zahn and Anderson Cooper. He asks after the black reporters. Why are they not up there? I share his concern and make a mental note to take it back to my bosses. But then he begins to rage that there are no black anchors on the network at all. Does he mean covering the campaign, I wonder to myself? The man has been a guest on my show. He knows me, even if he doesn’t recall how we met. I brought him on at MSNBC, then again at Weekend Today. I interrupt to remind him I’m the anchor of American Morning. He knows that. He looks me in the eye and reaches his fingers over to tap a spot of skin on my right had. He shakes his head. “You don’t count,” he says. I wasn’t sure what that meant. I don’t count — what? I’m not black? I’m not black enough? Or my show doesn’t count?
I was both angry and embarrassed, which rarely happens at the same time for me. Jesse Jackson managed to make me ashamed of my skin color which even white people had never been able to do. Not the kids in the hallways at Smithtown or the guys who wouldn’t date me in high school. I remember the marchers behind me at the trial about the black youth/kid who beat the Latino baby. The folks that chanted “biracial whore for the white man’s media,” even they didn’t even make feel this way. I would just laugh. Biracial, sure, whore, not exactly, white man’s media, totally! Whatever. But Reverend Jesse Jackson says, “I don’t count?”

Wow, the hypocrisy – Soledad O'Brien isn't black enough, but (equally biracial) Obama is? Who is Jackson to deem that? I'm sure he'd also argue that Allen West isn't black enough because isn't the "right" kind of black. Sheesh.
Soledad O'Brien is part Hispanic, which is the problem; if there's one ethnic group that black racists loath more than whites, it's Hispanics.
Oh, and – by the way – Jesse Jackson made several remarks about Obama during the Democratic Presidential primaries and the campaign itself that indicated he had the same opinion of Obama that he does of O'Brien…..not black enough.
I'm not familiar with O'Brien… what are her politics?

One thing I will give the not so revernd credit for, he can make a baby out of wedlock as good as any married person can. 1) The fact that she was polite and lady-like to NOT pimp-slpa the "Reverend" into next week for such a comment speaks well of her professionalism and inner strength.
2) I would truly love to see some Biblical justification for what these "reverends" (Jackson/Sharpton/Wright) are doing/saying on a daily basis. We all know about Wright's church (still looking for a biblical justification for "black liberation theology"), but when was the last time Sharpton or Jackson was behind a pulpit of an actual church? I think of all the storefront pastors across the nation who pray, fast and weep for some souls to attend their churches, who are being hurt every time on of these "reverends" are in the news.
I know Mrs. O'Brien does a show at least twice a year called "Black In America". I've never seen it, particularly because I am tired of the well-overdrawn "race card" being played on an almost daily basis. I wonder how many other Americans feel the same way. She probably has a good message, but her show gets ignored because of what they see/hear from the "reverends", the NAACP,hip-hop, etc…

HMMM HUH are you sure? Perhaps all or part of this is sarcasm but it does not reflect in the written word. If it is not sarcasm then Soledad has some serious self esteem issues, perhaps it is being named after a prison that has to be tough.

When I saw that line, I rolled my eyes. Maybe I've got her wrong (I'm not a CNN watcher, obviously), but it looks like a matter of someone accustom to the "us-versus-them" paradigm, only to find herself one of the "them," by one of racial division's chieftains.

Jackson was shown standing in Grant Park weeping when Obama came out between the fake Greek columns to wave to his adoring fans on election night. Many of the equally adoring news media speculated Jackson was weeping over seeing the first black president, but of course, most people knew that he was weeping because it was not him up there as he is again, the primary suffragette for black Americans. And, he would not be the one pulling the strings of power and of course the purse strings because he and his people are owed.
I like to think Jesse Jackson has a sliding scale of blackness that he keeps in his house.

Exactly. I know a journalist who covered his presidential campaign some years back. He changed the tone of his speeches according to the audience. He had a version for audiences with whites present, and another for when it was all (or nearly all) blacks. The version was described to me as being more spiteful towards whites. It was easier to get away with that sort of crap then, absent new video technology.
