A “privacy compliance review” issued by DHS last November says that since at least June 2010, its national operations center has been operating a “Social Networking/Media Capability” which involves regular monitoring of “publicly available online forums, blogs, public websites and message boards.”
The purpose of the monitoring, says the government document, is to “collect information used in providing situational awareness and establishing a common operating picture.”

So effectively you're saying We're paying Federal employees to monitor when Lindsey Lohan goes into rehab?
That is so awesome, I can barely put words to page! I can't wait to file my 1040 this year knowing that DHS is keeping me safe with this critical task. I'm going to lobby my congressman to make sure these brave boys and girls get some sort of Internet surfing campaign medal.
Can they award a Purple Heart for Carpel-Tunnel syndrome? Better start pushing for that as well.
The question is why???? Why does the government need to collect this information when it is regularly available by looking at the various websites themselves. The word "collecting" is key here. For what purpose is this collection taking place and what is Homeland Security involved.
The collection of information reminds me of Obama's AttackWatch site, where Obama supporters would REPORT on websites, people, organizations that were supposedly distorting Obama's message. (At least the way, he wanted it understood) This is yet another of the long string of "abuses and usurpations" of this administration. IT IS DANGEROUS to our liberty as a FREE PEOPLE. The administration needs to be called on this immediately and the facts about this need to be brought to the public knowledge.

I would suggest to those who use social media to find a way to connect to a half dozen or so people off line. And they are able to connect to a half dozen and so on. WHEN – not if – they hit the Kill Switch be prepared.

How is DHS monitoring news? Most of the time aspiring terrorists get arrested one later learns that they first popped up on the government's radar because they bragged on public forums about their plans.
Anyone talking on public forums should assume that more people are reading their words than just the people in the thread.

Good. You can get your morning Intel Briefing by hitting the news accumulation sites. Breitbart and DrudgeReport provide a great service to us all. And, remember Mr. Poindexter set a data accumulation center that can store all communication at any given moment in time, thats right, any data transmitted that is an electromagnetic wave is being stored and analyzed. I think the only thing not being recorded is voice through the air and cups on strings. BTW I think this is a good thing.

I agree, Petroglyph. They want us to be silent so that our fellow citizens will not become informed or ask questions. They want sheep and if they are reelected they will make sure that only sheep remain. We are fighting for the life of our free society, its Constitution and Bill of Rights. If 2 out of 3 fear an Obama reelection, they need to stand up and let their voice be heard!!! Hence the quote, I use is more important than ever.
