We are requesting Keith Olbermann issue an on-air retraction to his repeated assertions that James O’Keefe required “permission from his parole officer” to attend CPAC in Washington, D.C.
Around :40 into the above video, Olbermann says:
O’Keefe accepting an award there, I kid you not, with permission from his parole officer, according to Politico. Trust the law and order party to check in with its parole officers.
Olbermann’s source, Politico.com, has since corrected the bogus claim that O’Keefe needed permission from a “parole office[r].” Since Olbermann’s source has been discredited, Olbermann himself should correct the record as well.
Fast forward to about 4:00 into the clip and Olbermann has this to say to The Washington Independent’s Dave Weigel:
We’ll start with the law and order party, honoring the guy who needs to get his parole officer’s permission to attend.
The assiduous Patterico, who made a similar request of Olbermann last night, pointed out that this time, Olbermann neglected to source his false claim: “Note that, in the second passage, Olbermann does not attribute the claim to Politico, but makes it outright. Meaning he owns this falsehood and has an independent duty to retract it.”
As we explain in detail here, Mr. O’Keefe did not need “permission from his parole officer,” as he has never been paroled. The lead entry for the word “parole” at dictionary.com is, “the conditional release of a person from prison prior to the end of the maximum sentence imposed.” In other words, in order to be paroled, one must first be convicted and sentenced. Mr. O’Keefe, of course, is still pending trial. In a statement to BigJournalism.com, Mr. O’Keefe said he was granted permission to attend CPAC from a “pretrial services officer” from the New Jersey Pre-Trial Services Agency. The role of the officer assigned to him is to “investigate defendants who are charged with federal crimes and awaiting a court hearing.” The operative word being “charged.” Olbermann’s characterization of Mr. O’Keefe implies a conviction.
Politico did their due dilligence and issued a speedy and accurate correction almost immediately after we asked them to do so:
CORRECTION: This story was altered to reflect that O’Keefe and Basel are on pre-trial release, not probation or parole, as was stated in an earlier version.
We hope Mr. Olbermann will abide by the same journalistic protocol.
This event should also serve as a teachable moment illustrating what happens when a respected news source (in this case, Politico) prints misinformation that can be used by other media outlets to wage a smear campaign against an individual or organization.

Keith Olberman is without a doubt the largest piece of feces on the tube.
Keith—you are a pimple on the a$$ of cable tv.
hasn't it already?
According to O'Reilly they have about 260 viewers; and his 5AM reruns have fifteen times the audince of their first run stuff. Kidding aside, they are only a factor in giving the real stupid quote of the day…
Oberthing, just apologize. We still won't respect you but you can really shock your viewer,
Go, Retracto, go!
Poor Keith…he's in a bit of a quandary right now. He ticked off his main audience, those wacky Daily Kos Kids, because he called Ann Coulter a man and they see this as a slur, not on Ann, but on all GLBT's everywhere. (Check it at on Daily Kos if you have the stomach.) They are turning on him like junk yard dogs. Betcha he will retract THAT statement.
Wow, Keith, how stupid to upset your fan club. Hoisted by your own petard (that's with a P, not an R).
Let's see. A source, Politico, is used by a discredited source on his discredited propaganda network to try and discredit a person who is not discredited, but the source, Politico, being honorable, retracts, but the discredited source and it's discredited propaganda network, refuses to retract their discredited statement. What else would you expect?
They have been discredited and will not retract and that is one reason they are discredited.
Uh, Don't you have to be convicted of a crime before getting a parole officer? If permission was going to come from anybody, wouldn't O'Keefe consult with his lawyers on the matter? @IAMolbermann is blatantly spreading lies, but we all knew that already. olbermann, RETRACTO IS COMING AT YOU!
You not only need to be convicted of a crime, you have to have been incarcerated, and released on parole, before you get a parole officer. Olberman is such a jerkwad.
Olbermann? Retract? This would make Lie # 1,657.894 in his cue. Don't hold your breath.
Never go full "p"etard.
He needed the permission of an officer of the court, but you’re genuinely upset that they named the wrong court officer?
Your request for a correction is dishonestly ambiguous on that point. Maybe you should consider correcting it.
Much more would be accomplished if, like the vast majority of Americans, the media also ignores the existence of MSNBC. Or at the very least, acknowledge that MSNBC has lost any credibility they had possessed in the distant past.
So you are hoping that Mr. Olberman adhere to jouranlistic protocal and correct his false reporting? You must be making the mistaken assumption that he is a "journalist." He is not. He is a propagandist, deliberately reporting lies and distortions of the truth in furtherance of a socialist agenda. He is exercising freedom of the press and freedom of speech to undermine those very freedoms by attacking the only journalism and journalists who are restoring integrity and honesty to journalism.
From your keyboard to God's ears.
Who is Keith Olberman? I don't know anyone who pays attention to this idiot.
The only correlation between the words "Keith Olbermann" and "retracts" is that stressed rubber band-like sound of his "sphincter" every time his ratings (or should I say, LACK of ratings) are released. His ratings are so low that a retraction for him would be more simply carried out by picking up the phone and calling all two of his viewers to say that he was "mistaken".
We can only hope so.
On the other hand, we do need a doofus like Olberman around, to balance out our doofus, Glen Beck. They sometimes compliment each other.
Oh, Glenn. My family and many of my friends are devoted followers. I used to listen to him on my way to work (when I went to work at that time of morning) but about, oh, 18 months ago, I switched to Laura Ingraham. Sometimes she's too aggressive, but she's not weepy or wimpy. I think Beck has a great talent for communicating principles and values in a mass medium – obviously, that's what has built his following. But his devotion to a 3rd party idea is going to make the Tea Party the perpetual "also-rans" akin to Pat Buchanan. If he was advocating reform from within, I'd take him more seriously, because that's the most constructive solution. We should be focusing on primaries as well as – or maybe more than – generals. But that's another topic….
I like Beck.
He has created a lot of awareness.
I also like seeing how many folks here jump on me, whenever I say anything perceived as anti-Beck.
Olbermann's been sounding like Baghdad Bob for some time now.
Using historians going forward is all you need to know about him.
We are not rewriting history. We are finally getting it right. Beck deserves the credit and the fortune that goes with it. As George Will described envy it is the only sin that provides no satisfaction.
Envy sux. MSNBC? Who?
Funny.
You just drove home and reinforced my point………….
My goal is to meet keef othermen on the street one day (soon)
I think Beck does the goofball thing on purpose. I think he knows that he will appear less threatening the left but still have the ability to get the message across if he uses the gimmicks. I hear he still gets some serious threats from leftist nuts, but I think his act is a means to seem like harmless, nutty commentator. I bet he's happy to see lefty commentators like Olbermann dismiss him as a nobody. Being underestimated is always a good thing.
Keith Olbermann, the boyfriend of many of the trolls who clutter this site, would need an entire week to make good on all his lies.
I'm glad we live in this great country, with cherished freedom of speech rights under which even these right-wing nuts can mouth off with their idiotic diarrhea. Breitbart, Hannity, Beck, Limbaugh…FLUSH!
There…that's better.
If you heard his show this morning, then you know that RESTORATION of the GOP, not REVOLUTION is exactly what Beck is advocating. He knows as well as anybody that a third party WILL NOT WORK. He even said he is working on shows to review the history of third parties and why they floundered.
Just like Reagan said about the Democratic party, he didn't leave the party, it had left him. The GOP has left the conservatives and they will need to restore their conservative principles, with actions not words, if they want the support of movements like the Tea Party.
Hope you are getting paid the big bucks Retracto, 'cause you have your work cut out for you.
What is the going wage for a retraction Alpaca anyway?
Fierce competition in the countdown to no ratings.
Maybe we should get a petition to let Greg Gutfield loan out Andy Levy to MSNBC to do a half time report on Olberman's show. I'm thinking obly's head would explode on the 4th correction.
Is the FACT that Olberman is spreading lies, has a pathetic excuse of a staff who do not understand the basics of journalism, and works for a has been network surprising to anyone?
My big toe has better ratings than Keith Olbermann, Good bye, MSLSD.
Where is everyone getting this idea Glen was advocating a third party in his speech? I think he was just telling conservatives to pull their heads out of their patooties and face the fact that there are some progressives, liberals, whatever you want to call them in the Republican party that are part of the problem. You can't fix a problem until you admit it's there.
That said, I love you, Cowboy, and would never maliciously jump on you. If I do jump on you, I promise you will like it.
funniest comment I have read all day…nice one.
And that has WHAT to do with the article?
Let me channel Johnny Cochran for a sec….
Report the facts or you must retract!
Thank you, Sgt_Schlitz
I don't agree with you at all. Glen Beck is the greatest thing to happen to tv. He has America reading, studying our founding Fathers, learning about the progressive movement and what it means for America. He uses many theatrics to be entertaIning, but he is doing a great service for our country. He is not peddling lies, but truth, and rarely has he even made a mistake, and he corrects all he makes.
We don't have to worry about Olbermann, the American people are taking care of him. His ratings are in the toilet. How long will MSNBC be willing to lose money on supposedly news show that everyone knows is just propoganda, and unpopular propoganda at that!
The cable system that serves the town whre I live, recently removed MSNBC from the channel line up and repalced that slot with a 24/7 Spanish language game show network. I believe that change speaks volumes about MSNBC. I am LMAO about it
Well, there are so few sure ways of getting a laugh these days…
It’s only a matter of time before O’Keefe will need a parole officer, since he’s going to jail.
With all the credence that anyone give Olbernut, the best way to sap any strength from a negative story is to let him repeat it. He is so over the top and wrong all the time that no one trusts him. I suspect that most of his audience are Conservatives who like to laugh at him. What a sad and pathetic little man.
Wow, that was so witty and intelligently written. You are truly a genius! What a marvelous product of our public education system, your teachers must be so proud!
Thanks for saying "by" and not "on" his 'tard. English majors do appreciate the distinction.
"Viewer"…I got it.
Isn't Keith himself on pre-trial release? (Note, no quotes, caps or ellipses)
If Keith does aplogize who will notice? No one watches, so what difference does it make?
Keith missed the trial, conviction, and sentencing apparently. Oh right, there wasn't any of that….asshole.
We hope Mr. Olbermann will abide by the same journalistic protocol?
LOL!
Please! Funniest thing I've read all day. If wishes were alpacas, internet posters would ride.
Keith Olbermann abiding to journalistic standards.
*wipes away the tears of laughter*
Next thing you know, you'll ask him to not lie on-air. Don't get your hopes up for that or a retraction.
Just guessing… too irritating to watch and don't know anyone who does.
Viewer? There has to be at least two other people in the studio, don't ya think?
Work cut out for him (Retracto)? No pun intended, but it seems like shooting fish in a barrel to me… Hardest part would be the actual reading/watching of this crap in the first place.
If we join together maybe we can alert the folks to not watch Blowberman. Damn, that was fast. Mission accomplished!
+1!
Lots of luck with that one. "Keith Olbermann is a girl." – Ann Coulter
How could a super-intelligent guy like Keith Olbermann not know that parole officers are available only to those who have been indicted, tried, convicted, sentenced and incarcerated?
Keith Olbermann has no brains…thus no headaches….
So where are the numerous retractions from Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity or Bill O'Reilly… or how about that CPAC statement Mitt Romney made that was inaccurate? BigJournalism? More like BigFarce…
Retracto – please bite that crazy failed sportscaster on the leg, you fuzzy, furry, fluffy ATTACK ALPACA!
domo arigato Mr. Retracto
Assuming "one viewer" was giving Obernutjob the benefit of doubt already as opposed to no viewers every other day.
Beck's silliness lies more in his presentation than his substance. He was much more collected on his HSN show.
I was thinking along the lines of the camera and sound guys, not people who were there to actually watch. Possibly the most irritating airhead in the biz. Son of Maher?
I know you are just a troll, stumbled on this site, made your little statement, and will never read the reply. Why don't you try citing something that was not fact by one of these guys and then present the fact that disputes it. Of course they make errors and I have ACTUALLY HEARD them back down from them and apologize for the error long before anybody called them on it. You are being called to dinner now so run up out of your little basement, eat your dinner, get your pat on the head and get tucked in.
You're pissed that he said "parole officer," rather than "pretrial services officer?"
HA HA!
HA HA HA!
HA HA!
You guys are awesome!
A retraction from Olbermann? Fat effing chance. His ego is so far gone that he couldn't possibly admit to being wrong or unethical about anything, no matter how obvious it is.
Historians 50-100 years from now are going to destroy him and his tribe of raving loons.
[...] game of the Olympics so far. Here is how I, someone without the game on tv, experienced the mammotWhat Channel Is Msnbc – That is because your cable package does not include MSNBC, the channel that was providing the [...]
A friend of mine, a co-worker of Olbermann, said he overheard Olbermann while in the john – talking to his penis and wincing in pain while trying to urinate. Poor guy apparently is struggling with some type of STD. Hey Keith – I hear penicillin works good on that. My bud also told me, "Don't shake hands with Olbermann, he doesn't wash when leaving the john".
Good luck with all of that.
Seriously, you are all trying to defend James O'Keefe, a proven fraud?! And what is up with this site … another in the chain of the right-wing mainstream media. What independence exists here in another Breitbart/Drudge production? Does Fox News own Andrew Breitbart yet? When will that purchase be finalized?
Unfortunately, Retardo, the Dereliction Anchor, will only make an on-air correction/apology if his higher-ups at MSNBC and the parent company force him to. And my guess is they're hoping another week of regular show pre-emptions by the Winter Olympic will cause this whole thing to blow over by the time their regular low-rated prime-time schedule resumes on March 1.
Got it. Yeah, his only viewers are paid to watch just like SEIU, they think they are doing something important
because they get paid so much.
Mahbore could be his twin…
I Hear that lying dick oberman every day, However, after I finish taking a crap I wipe his mouth and go watch a real news program on FOX.
The good news is that even if BOTH of Olbermann's viewers were tuned in, at least one of them was sleeping.
Sandwiched between 2 backhanded comments…. I can't believe he did it. The bosses must be breathing down his neck.
Olbermann's not knowing what parole is or why O'Keefe wouldn't have a parole officer must be further evidence of his cow college education. Anyone who went to the real Cornell wouldn't be so stupid.
You'll need to devote an autonomous blog site in order to correct Olbermann and Company because their errors, deliberate and otherwise, are simply too numerous and too frequent. How about 'BIG-Bathtub-Boy' as the title? The dude is such an hysterical little girl, the entertainment factor alone would make it the number one 'BIG' site. lol.
Is anyone else getting dizzy?
So did Olberman ever make it right?
The funniest part is that the original source of the error was James O'Keefe, III.
"I've called it a parole officer, but she's actually from 'pre-trial services,'" O'Keefe said.
