Nobody really considers Rod Serling a prophet, but I’ll tell you, this guy saw our day and even did an episode of The Twilight Zone on it. Serling was a typical Hollywood leftist, so were he alive, he would not appreciate the connection I am making here, but it is unmistakable and like most episodes of The Twilight Zone, it will give you the creeps.
The episode “To Serve Man” first aired in 1962, and it makes virtually every top ten list of all-time Twilight Zone episodes. The same story line was used by ABC in their “V” series that lasted four episodes and is scheduled to return on March 30.
Respectfully submitted for your perusal: a Kanamit. Height: a little over nine feet. Weight: in the neighborhood of three hundred and fifty pounds. Origin: unknown. Motives? Therein hangs the tale, for in just a moment we’re going to ask you to shake hands, figuratively, with a Christopher Columbus from another galaxy and another time. This is the Twilight Zone.
Kanamits arrive on earth and immediately make everything better. They promise humans that they will bring the world peace by installing force fields between the nations that will not allow weapons to penetrate (take that, Homeland Security). They have some secret energy source that will power everything we use (they were green before green was cool), and they have secret fertilizer that will make arid soil flourish and there will be plenty of food for all mankind (and they did all this before there was an Earth Day or a Sierra Club).
When the king of the Kanamits lets us little people know what he will do for the world he says, “We ask only that you trust us, only that you simply trust us.” Sounds like a great deal. I’m all in! “Yes we can, yes we can, yes we can!”
Naturally, the United Nations falls in love with the Kanamits. The media adores them and the headlines blast out their praise. “KANAMITS PROMISE NEW ERA”, “KANIMITS OFFER PEACE AND PROSPERITY”. Gotta love the U.N., their discretion has always been top notch.
Ah, this is as good as it gets. Kanamits can do it all, and just to prove they can, they drop of a book with all sorts of strange writing it in. The government brains are called upon to interpret the book. Of course, there is some resistance. Since these Kanamits have already said they have only benign motives, and initially, their plans are working—why should any of us mere mortals try to figure out why they are really here?
After extensive research they finally decipher the title of the book, “To Serve Man.” Of course, those who are gullible are even more excited at the altruistic sounding title. Like Obama, even when he tells us his plans are to “share the wealth,” many still find it hard to believe that he loves socialist principles. Those who haven’t fallen in “schoolgirl love” with the Kanamits quickly figure out that the plan by the Kanamits is to “serve” the people up as their next meal. No duh.

In the final sequence of the half-hour episode you find the main character had been fooled to fly to this nirvana planet where the Kanamits live. He quickly finds out that he is on the menu, then offers a warning to those left on earth, “Sooner or later we’ll all of us be on the menu.” Rod Serling saw our day.

My favorite Twilight Zone episode!
Obama kind of looks like one of them…YIKES!
Although this was slightly before my time, I remember seeing this exact episode in syndication. It gave me chills at the time, and now that the parallel between this classic and the current administrations actions has been drawn, it has moved from chilling to terrifying…
There is simply no way to reach the naive of the dangers this administration represent. The saving grace is I believe that there are now enough citizens with their eyes open to put a stop to this power mad man and Congress.
If you want all of your needs provided to you; your food, your housing, your health care, your security, and if you will not trouble yourself much to look past appearance and discern the truth, then you will be happiest and most content to live in that place most suited to your demeanor:
A nice little pasture, on a nice little farm.
And when you have been shorn of all your wool…. what use are you then, mutton?
Somebody's gonna get "raked over the coals" – either the Demonrats this November and Obummer in 2012, or US…
If ya think that episode seemed to fit right with today's world, ya gotta throw in "Obsolete Man" with Burgess Meredith. About serving the State, and your usefulness as a citizen of the all powerful and all knowing State. The mocking of God by the State, (I use a capital S when referring to the State as they take the place of God)
And when the State finally does completely control the health care in America? How will we know what resources go to whom? I suppose the State in their wisdom will have to decide just who is worthy of treatment, and thus…..WHO IS OBSOLETE~! Of course the decision would rest entirely with those wise and lovable Government Bureaucrats who currently serve us so well and efficiently, and with a smile on their faces too boot~!
When you've got your snout in the trough, your bacon belongs to the farmer.
it was Richard 'Jaws' Kiel who had the cookbook…
And now, like then it is about getting our goose cooked!
"WE HAVE MET THE ENEMY AND HE IS US"
Pogo
That was a great episode. I wonder if it inspired the creators of ABC's "V" as well as Barrack. Lots of kudos to Rod Sterling, a famous native son of my own Binghamton, New York.
I have often wondered what goes on behind the closed doors of the progs…when they are not discussing taking over but what they will do when it happens….what will be our purpose to them? What does their utopia look like? It would probably scare the ever lovin' crap out of us if we knew….dodo dodo, dodo dodo….
Rod Serling was a prophet before there was such a thing on tv. Long after his death, we have come to see this program as a predictor of many things that we, in hindsight, should have seen coming. It is unfortunate that Mr Serling didn't do a program on a "p"resident intent on making this country a socialist dictatorship – we might have been able to predict, circumvent and possibly thwart the present one. Oh wait, he didn't have to – for it would have made no difference – what with the dufuses in control at present in the house and senate, and voters willingly aquiescing to the "umm, umm, umm, mantra of his serfdom, we were so gullible, that we have one sitting in the white house! Welcome to the future, and it is NOW!
Someone need to point out–so I will!–that the story "To Serve Man" was not created by Rod Serling. The Twilight Zone episode was an adaptation of the 1950 science fiction short story by Damon Knight.
Just so credit goes where credit is due.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Serve_Man
The Simpsons did a takeoff on this in 1990. Kang and Kodos promise to take the Simpsons to their utopian planet, but Lisa discovers a cookbook on their ship titled "How To Cook Humans." The aliens explain the cover is just dusty and when they wipe off the "space dust" on the cover it actually says "How To Cook For Humans". More wiping reveals "How to Cook Forty Humans", then finally "How to Cook For Forty Humans". The aliens get fed up with Lisa's accusations and so they decide not to deliver the utopia they promised.
So, don't question your betters or they'll leave you alone to fend for yourselves! Oh wait……….

Credit the writer of the short story this Twilight Zone Episode was based on—Damon Knight.
Agreed Edward. It is sad it takes us old farts to know who the real credit goes to. "To Serve Man" was written by Damon Knight
Progressives should be on everyone's electoral menu.
We need a new book "How to serve Obama."
A new reason to see the birth certificate?
Yes, but most of Serling's episodes were "borrowed". Someone else wrote it, but it was the genius an prescience of Serling that recognized the story's power and brought it to the screen in a way that was both thought-provoking and creepy (not to mention entertaining)
So many TZ episodes are relevant today. The Burgess Meredith one where he is declared "obsolete" by the state, & is sentenced to death for reading books;
and my personal favorite, "Number 12 Looks Just Like You" —if that does not reflect the mindset of popular culture's evolution into a homogenous plastic goo—–well, then i'm an aaardvark.
LOVE TZ & viva Rod Serling
The cautionary Utopian Nightmare was Serling's stock in trade on The Twilight Zone. A lot of episodes reflected the bizarre effects of Big Brother government.
I've posted a couple essays discussing this topic on my blog, most recently, last week. Click on my link…
Your next stop… Plumwood Road…
LOL I just posted that too.
Also eerily similar to the plot of 'V'. I was surprised ABC had the guts to air the remake.
Is it possible for the BIGs to cut back on RahmObama pictures? Man alive. Talk about fatigue already. Nausea.
Obama fatigue is going parabolic and he is ready to 'ramp up' in coming months? Give em enough rope.
When I was your age, "The Simpsons" was funny….
Can we give "Harrison Bergeron" a nod since we're on the subject of Progressive playbooks inspired by sci-fi stories?
Agreed, I expect the political land scape to be considerably different come November.
My concern, is this the left's plan, because it certainly looks like it to me.
Unless the GOP can get veto proof majorities in both houses, none of this is going away.
Remembering back to 2008 election, Obama campaigned mostly against Bush. Of course the left swallowed it hook, line and sinker. But with the democrats owning everything, Obama has nothing to run against (not for – against), which is going to make 2012 very uncomfortable for the left.
How ever, losing one – or even both – houses of congress suddenly gives them something to run against.
Why is Obama still campaigning on his new health care success? Is it because "we the people" still don't want this?
I think its a safe bet they are going to take a serious beating in November 2010 – unless the flood of TARP money rolling through the economy like a tsunami causes enough voters to forget how steamed they are now.
But I know democrats very, very, very well. I was born into the left, raised in it, hell – I supported it for decades myself, if not the democratic party itself. They have a lot of issues, but when it comes to the political game, they do know what they're doing. Do not underestimate them in the least. They have a very potent coalition, and the MSM as their attack machine.
What we're seeing now is not by accident. It is on purpose. Make no mistake about that.
If you use the Firefox browser, get the AdBlock addon. I use it to block pictures of Barry as well as annoying videos and animations. Much smoother browsing.
Your "TARP money" point is a very good one – I only hope the "Tea Party" sentiment is wide-spread and long-lasting…if not, well, this could be a long, hard slog to maintain individual liberty…
Too true. One of my favorite Serling plays was "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street". Serling lived on the street I grew up on (about a decade before my family moved there). He was ahead of his time. But for all that foreshadowing, we still fell into the same hole.
Harrison Bergeron is based on the short story by Kurt Vonnegut and it is the quintessential condemnation of all attempts to impose "fairness" through legislation on the intrinsically unfair nature of life.
Here's another version (Flagged by some MGM douche) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vahbbcI-6jg
Well get out of town on a moped. I live in Johnson City.
"Can we give "Harrison Bergeron" a nod …?
That seems like the fair thing to do…
if we equally give nods to everyone's stories
If you ask me, Serling's genius was getting this stuff on to the small screen. That feat alone was monumental.
Sterling passed away when I was younger than a teenager, so even though I live next to his home town, and know people who grew up with him, I didn't know much about the man as a person.
If he was a typical Hollywood lefty, that would explain his settling in Ithaca, NY. That is one of the most hard core red cities I've ever been too. Last time I was there, it looked like its where half the bus* settled down after the Grateful Dead stopped touring.
* For those too you to know, following the Dead on tour was called getting on the "bus." Something I've personally done on several occasions. But those people in Ithaca are too weird for me.
Small world, Ed: It's been a long time, and I actually lived in Port Dick. Do they still have the golf course at Chenango Valley State Park where the woodchuck's wood sit out along the rough and laugh at your errant tee shots?
ZING!
btw, apologies to Rod's spirit for inadvertently sticking an unwanted "T" in the spelling of his surname
He'll campaign until you realize just how much you LOVE it.
Or until it kills you. (Healthcare reform, that is!)
Yes, sheep. Look to the Twilight Zone and "V" for important hidden messages about the nazi liberal agenda.
This wins the asinine conspiracy theory of the decade award.
Strangely enough (or not), I was just thinking about that episode as I watched the recap of "V" last week. Just really freakish to think of that line right before the man is hauled on board the spaceship: "'To Serve Man'–It's a cookbook!" Ooh, gave myself a chill right there.
Ditto. Wherever the ideas came from, Serling was brilliant in how he produced them for TV. For that, he deserves all the credit in the world.
I agree, Ed. Soon after Scott Brown was elected senator, there were many blog posters on many conservative blogs declaring the health care bill dead. I spoke up then not to let our guard down, because the dems hadn't said it was dead, yet. And, like you said, they are very, very good at politics. They are highly skilled and proficient liars and somehow can make the people forget what they had done in exchange for promises (lies) of what they're going to do, if they can only get elected (or re-elected).
Personally, my favorite would have to be "Death's Head Revisited." It's not just the Nazi getting his; there's just something about the end that sends a shiver down my spine. Serling may have been a leftist–though it was a very particular kind of Old Left–but he could still see a human being's place in the universe and what happened when that scheme was violated.
As Hannibal Lector might say "I'm having a friend for dinner!"
SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE!!!!!!
I'm sure it won't come to that. After all, "all animals are created equal".
As far as the Obama Administration and the Twilight Zone, I think "The Obsolete Man" comes closest into what Obama administration's legacy may become.
Opening Narration: "You walk into this room at your own risk, because it leads to the future; not a future that will be, but one that might be. This is not a new world: It is simply an extension of what began in the old one. It has patterned itself after every dictator who has ever planted the ripping imprint of a boot on the pages of history since the beginning of time. It has refinements, technological advances, and a more sophisticated approach to the destruction of human freedom. But like every one of the super states that preceded it, it has one iron rule: Logic is an enemy, and truth is a menace. This is Mr. Romney Wordsworth, in his last forty-eight hours on Earth. He's a citizen of the State, but will soon have to be eliminated, because he's built out of flesh and because he has a mind. Mr. Romney Wordsworth, who will draw his last breaths in the Twilight Zone."
Someone should make this into a movie. Maybe have Jon Voight in the Burgess Meredith character.
We deciphered the title, it’s called “The Health Care Bill”, we are all cooked!
I saw a great poster at the 9/12 March last year where the guy made his poster called to Serve Man and it opened like a book and inside was a an alien stylized obama reading Rules for Radicals! – probably my favorite sign from that day! you can see it here:
http://cassandraeffect.com/the-best-sign-photos-yet-from-the-912-tea-party-march-on-washington-289-296/
We deciphered the title, it's called "The Health Care Bill", we are all cooked!!!
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety" B. Franklin 1775…Please protect me, big oppressive government, i will relinquish unto you all my freedoms!!!!!
Check out the old black and white Twilight Zone episode, I think called "The Librarian". The similarities to where we're heading me the willies.
Interesting that episode is so memorable to so many – even crossing generations. Must have hit a nerve. Still does.
What can one say?
Ha! Beat you to it.
I made the connection of "To Serve Man" with O'Barry before Acorn got him into the White House…
Well who took the wraps off the face of that pelosi character. And which one of those masks did reed get stuck wearing?
Mal
but some are more equal then others…Like the favored Party members.(.SEIU?)
Hmm, Barry does look a little like Hannibal, doesn't he? Something about his eyes…
I am pretty sure they think the world would be a better place with a small population, and robots to do most of the work for them.
I attended a meeting of the Professional Engineers Society of Thailand in January, and the keynote speech, naturally, included the opinion that the human race really ought to downsize itself to <2.5B. Nat that the human race might not decide to do that by attrition and off-migration, but as I see it the earth could probably handle 20B, if technology were allowed to develop relatively unfettered. Of course, we probably couldn't get there with all these nettlesome, meddlesome libs in the mix.
"Serve" as used in South Park!
And if we don't produce the BIGGEST conservative voter turnout in November, our goose is cooked!
REMEMBER THIS NOVEMBER!
What a nitwit
“Princes and nations shall
vanish from the earth.
The human race will then
become one family, and the
world will be the dwelling of
Rational Men.”
Adam Weishaupt
(1748-1830) Founder of the Illuminati
I'm just sayin'.
It sends shivers down my spine…these greenies should sacrifice themselves for gaia. I'll stick around and enjoy the quiet once they are gone.
I am afraid that they will meddle and create another WW and then the population will unfortunately downsize. It all pisses me off so much. There are so many things we could be doing to improve life for third world countries if the progs would get off their control freak, power hungry trips…it makes me livid. Capitalism, liberty, and natural law, makes life better for all…except for those who want to control.
Its scary that this ZPG mentality seems to have infected all the so called 'elitists' all over the world and are constantly harping on it, creating fear to the ignorant.
Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. Revelation 13, 18.
Oops, left out, "gave" me the willies.
Take your cameras with you to the polls…SEIU, the New Black Panthers et alia will be out in force trying to suppress the vote.
You guys beat me to the punch. I was going to cite "Obsolete Man" with Burgess also. A prediction of the Death Panels??? LOL
Thanks for acknowledging. Serling was great, but Knight should be credited with the story.
You can go back a little further, to C.S. Lewis's "Screwtape Proposes a Toast," to see another example of this.
and then you wonder what happened, or as the scarecrow man said "If I only had a Brain"
