If you were around in the sixties, you remember the scene: the family gathers around the TV, listening to Mercury astronaut Wally Schirra explain in delicious detail what was about to happen as a digital clock on the corner of the screen wound its way down to zero, ever so slowly. Then – finally – the roar of the mightiest engines every built. The cheers. The majestic sight of a Saturn V creeping up past the launch gantry as mission control solemnly declared: “Lift off. We have lift off at seven minutes past the hour.”
It was heady stuff, in a world of endless possibilities. We knew, without a doubt, that we could go anywhere, do anything and that we would continue to answer the burning human question that has driven mankind to new heights for millennia: what’s out there?

The President of the United States, according to this story in the Orlando Sentinel, doesn’t seem to share that sense of wonder or to understand the educational, societal and economic value that comes along with indulging natural human curiosity about the universe we live in. If he has his way, Obama will replace the sonorous call to “boldly go where no man has gone before” with a mere murmur, to blandly study what everyone has been studying for years.
“We certainly don’t need to go back to the moon,” said one administration official, as if that explained everything. One could point to a host of things this administration has done that it didn’t have to do that cost a hell of a lot more (TARP comes immediately to mind) than the $5 billion per year or so that NASA budgeted for the Constellation project, designed to get us back to the moon by 2020 and to Mars after that.
Constellation is not about going back to the moon, or to Mars, per se. It’s about getting back out there, pushing the science and finding out what’s over the next hill. There’s a sense of wonder and national pride that goes along with space exploration of course, but there are also very real, tangible benefits that society realizes as side benefits when we engage in this kind, or any other kind, of basic research. Because this unimaginative administration can not conceive of such benefits does not mean that Constellation program will be bereft of them. Our experience with NASA tells us quite the opposite.
But if not Constellation, then what? From the Sentinel story:
In the meantime, the White House will direct NASA to concentrate on Earth-science projects — principally, researching and monitoring climate change — and on a new technology research and development program that will one day make human exploration of asteroids and the inner solar system possible.
Just what we need: more climate change monitoring. Today, NASA is running about twenty missions that are directly or indirectly related to global warming and the environment. They’ve got satellites studying ice, ocean levels, clouds, ozone, hurricane formation and atmospheric temperatures, just to name a few. That’s in addition to the legions of scientists poring over surface temperature records and computer models. How much more climate change study do we need, especially since as long as Dr. James Hansen remains employed by NASA we all know what the agency’s official climate change opinion is going to be anyway: we’re all going to die! How many more resources do we have to dedicate to solving a problem that – in the opinion of this scientist and many others – doesn’t actually exist? We’ve even got the CIA spying on carbon dioxide now. What else do we need to do?

This administration literally spends an awful lot of time looking in the mirror instead of out the window. Its ill-considered choice of how to utilize the agency that has long represented the best of both American science and spirit is another depressing reminder that Barack Obama doesn’t understand the nation he governs or the people in it.

can we send him to rule mars or some other distant planet??
As usual, it's not what is best for the country, but what will improve progressive control. Destroy our pride and let the Lib-tards tell us what is right.
There is no point in going to the moon, or anywhere else. We have lost our moral compass and under the leadership of our current illustrious leader, and head Explorer, Barrack Obama, the mission would only end in disaster or embarrasment. As a leader, the President set the tone for this country. Under the current guidance and leadership, Barrack Obama couldn't find his way to the mens room, or back, without a committee to chart his course.
"……… the best of both American science and spirit is another depressing reminder that Barack Obama doesn’t understand the nation he governs or the people in it."
Depressing? We haven't been able to rebuild the World Trade Center, after almost nine years, we sure better not venture into outer space, least of all the moon.
To think, we are the children of the Greatest Generation, the generation that saved the World from Fascism, Marxism and Communism. The generation that rebuilt Europe after the World War II, and put the first man on the moon. Today, we can't figure out how to get through a glass door if it doesn't say "Push" or "Pull" on it.
Thats Leadership!
I remember when the mention of NASA conjured up visions of an exciting future and man's ability to attain the unattainable, to reach for loftly goals, to never give up on your dreams. Nasa was inspirational to generations and people around the world.
Now NASA is politicized and it's mission corrupted. I feel Obama's touch of doom and destruction reaching far and wide.
it took less time to build the Empire State bldg….sadly…
Good idea, lets send Obama and all of the progressives to Mars. Tell him they are looking for a world leader up there, then he can continue his campaign for emperor on Mars (Or maybe for the Grand Emperor of the Universe:).
………and the Transcontinental Railroad, or the Panama Canal or the Hoover Dam.
Bravo.

Obama is going to shove Global Warming down our throats regardless of it's existence, regardless of how much it costs, regardless of legislation and regardless of whether or not Americans believe in it! Just like the healthcare scam. But hey, Obama isn't an ideoloque, he just a Marxist!
What I can't understand is, if as the lefties believe that the world is doomed due to global warming, why on Earth would they defund space exploration?
so sorry to be argumentative but our illustrious third world leader doesn't seem to share in anything that makes sense. I m certain is far to above his goal of destruction to merit pushing. Now if nasa would just take care of the rest of the world he might get on board for that. He wonders why he is becoming the most hated man in recent history?
Is it me or doesn't NASA stand for National Aeronautics and Space Administration? I thought that meant FLIGHT and SPACE. As in building flying things and sending them into space. Why are they involved in this BS?
When did NASA change into the National Organization for Global Junk Science? Or the American wing of The Money Sucking Earther Movement? I want a mission to the Moon. Or to Venus. That's what I pay these geniuses for. If they are going to study temperature, it had better be the temperature of Jupiter. Not Ohio.
What a shame !! I think NASA lost sight once they built the shuttle and stuck with this program for the last 25+ years.. Orbiting around the earth is far from manned space exploration but it did serve a good purpose like satellite deployment, repair and the Hubble telescope placement which has done wonders to help us understand the universe.. If we would have started a Constilation type program 5 or 10 years after the shuttle program we might have a station on the moon instead of orbiting the earth..The final death nail would be the International Space Station, we've spent way to much on this program with no significant scientific discovery..
Quite frankly, as American citizens, and as taxpayers, we should demand a mission to the moon IMMEDIATELY.
Furthermore, we should demand that Barrack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid be on the first flight there.
Obama wants his agenda, and by Marx he's going to have it no matter what. With all the controversy over the science (or lack of) for global warming he needs something that is beyond question. In walks NASA. No one would ever question NASA. The very fact that he continues to push for a cap and trade scheme only proves that he is not concerned about global warming, but about wealth transfer. I think we all agree by now that cap and trade will do nothing to reduce global temperatures, but will instead serve as an instrument of rape against the American economy. The constitution has, with the peoples help, the power to protect itself against internal enemies of the United States. The powers of Impeachment.
Another interesting tidbit to throw in that always gives me pride in "the greatest generation":
American industry provided almost two-thirds of all the Allied military equipment produced during the war: 297,000 aircraft, 193,000 artillery pieces, 86,000 tanks and two million army trucks.
In four years, American industrial production, already the world's largest, doubled in size.
I'm sure this will help you to understand:
"We were so busy just getting stuff done and dealing with the immediate crises that were in front of us that I think we lost some of that sense of speaking directly to the American people about what their core values are and why we have to make sure those institutions are matching up with those values" ~ Obama ~
Just copied this from the CIA site linked above………."It will also be aggressive in outreach to academics and think tanks working the issue. The goal is a powerful asset recognized throughout our government, and beyond, for its knowledge and insight"……………..
Exactly what do they mean by "aggressive outreach"? If you are a researcher who just happens to disagree( as many do) with the Presidents view of global warming, and the CIA aggressively reaches out to you; how does this affect your research and your ability or even motivation to make your opinion public? Honestly, when governments start trying to manipulate science for their own agendas, we should all be very afraid. If the CIA really wants to know what is behind the climate, they should start by looking at the SUN. You know, the big yellow ball in the sky that heats up the Earth and gives life to this planet.
Translation: "We were just so busy selling our shell game to the public that we forgot to properly package it. We didn't make sure the people understood what their NEW core values were going to be and why we are spending all of their money on institutionally enslaving them."
I WANT TO GO TO THE FU@%&NG MOON!
Just one more massively destructive decision from a man who not only doesn't understand the people of the United States, he really can't stand us. His disdain is becoming more and more apparent.
I have often disagreed with past presidents about various issues, but always felt that they genuinely cared for our country and wanted to do what they felt was right for America. Obama is a whole other thing. It seems as though he has nothing but disgust for the people, and the American way of life. It's as though he is a secret communist agent sent undercover to destroy us from the inside.
better idea: you stay here, we send Obamass to the moon(one way)
Good thought, but don't you think they'd be smart enough to stamp his forehead "return to sender" and toss him back?
Marxist progressive is pretty accurate.
He does not like America, the country we know. His aspiration is to create a "new" America, the kind that would make Michelle proud.

I concur. Here is a brief article that might enhance one's appreciation of what the Greatest Generation accomplished. It is mind boggling.

If our schools only taught half of what has made our country great. This is such a moment in history.
Does America live or die. I seem to spend a lot of time either sick to my stomach or pissed as hell.
Osama Bin Laden trumpeted the "Global Warming" message and this adminsitration jusmped on the bandwagon. OMG! Bin Laden agrees with us! Screw the Outer Space missions and lets get rolling on this phony global warming issue. I can see where Alwhore sends Bin laden a personal invite to his next tax-payer funded party.
I swear, this administration is demented! Russia and China and maybe even Haiti will exceed us in space exploration. Our money has been allocated to the NWO, we are freaking broke and regressing to pre world war 1 status. USA, the greatest country on the planet relegated to third world status.
What are we going to do about this folks?
The planet Uranus comes to mind or the now non-planet Pluto.
I can't find the words to express my disappointment about the White House's plans to essentially eliminate the manned space capabilities of the United States. I've been a huge fan of the space program since the mid-1960s, and I still vividly remember watching the live, grainy footage of the first moon landing in 1969 on my family's black-and-white television set.
This is a sad, sad day for those of us who had once hoped we were on the cusp of a great era of manned space exploration.
Vote out any and all Democrats and any Moderate (Purple RINO) Republicans – Snow, Collins, and McCain. I would have said Specter, but he saved us the trouble and went back to his Dem roots.
Don't blame me either, I voted for the Republican VP Candidate, too back she was harnessed to such a dead horse.
McCain spent so much time reaching across the aisle, and running such an inept and "gentlemanly" campaign that he blurred the lines between him and BHO.
I just watched Star Trek 4 with my kids. Kirk and crew had to time travel to 1980’s San Francisco to bring back two humpback whales to save the earth. The President needs to know he is dooming the earth in the 23rd century. Wait a second that’s make believe. Man made global warming is undisputed science. No one is using make believe to educate the masses about how vile a species we are for destroying the planet with our putrid existence.
It is in our DNA to audaciously go forth in the vast sea of space. This country was built on explorers and risk takers not central planners and regulators.
The space program is a symbol of America's greatness. It must be destroyed so that the money can be spent on something that make us weaker and less vital. Obama is a tumor.

OBAMA IS AN IDEALOGUE……..STUCK ON STUPID.
Is there anything this man does that makes sense to a rational person? No. His whole outlook on the world is foreign to most Americans except those on the far left that hate everything this country stands for. Of course it would would make sense to him to take a agency intended to facilitate our outreach into space and redirect it to facilitate the goal of enslaving us with "climate change" regulation and taxation.
Chris Matthews had the chutzpah to suggest that Obama was "the last Kennedy brother" on the Today Show back last August. I wonder how the Kennedys feel today about Uncle Barack's plan to terminate John F. Kennedy's vision. Ah, the wretched irony …
Woo hoo! Now you're talkin!
Great Title, Rich! "To Boldly Go Nowhere". Man, that really says it all.
Gentle Readers,
Aside from the economic benefits, the Obama Administration fails to recognize the purpose of the Manned Space Program: Specifically, " …… the United States will seek to dominate Space through a peaceful program of scientific exploration and commercial development in order to preclude the possibility that some other nation or group of nations might seek to dominate Space militarily. The costs of this peaceful program are far less than
the costs of a military competition in Space or the development of compensating terrestrially based military capability. " — An imprecise, but hopefully essentially correct paraphrasing of Pres. John Kennedy .
By demonstrating our technical capability and national will with a manned space program we save both money and lives in Defense Programs and also enhance America's standing both politically and economically.
Pres. Obama should do as every President since 1960 and support manned space exploration.

Because we need to spend the money here to stop global warming.
The Left wants us to solve all our problems on Earth before we even begin to think of going into space. The possibility that space exploration might help solve some of those problems never even occurs to them — it doesn't fit the narrative.
"I love America. That's why I want to change everything about it."

There's a risk that sending Obama to the sun would extinguish it's fire, the same way he is trying to extinguish the American spirit.
Maybe there is a planet somewhere on which they value deception and self-destructive values.
Hence the term, "ObaMarxism."
Obama is the love-child of Jeremiah Wright and William Ayers.
Yet once again, Democrats and Osama bin Laden find themselves on the same side of an issue.
I'm glad you mentioned JFK.
His father, Joseph Kennedy was sent home from his job as ambassador to Great Britain in 1940 because of his support of Nazi Germany.
That doesn't get mentioned much in the K-12 history books, but it's true.

People one day will look back to the days when Socialists briefly ruled this country and destroyed its space program and shake their heads in sadness. The American political Liberal of today only sees the results of their own failed social engineering projects and wants to throw more money at them and will mortgage our future to do it. They have no vision beyond this rock and never will.
I wish China well as it takes on the mantle of leadership in human space exploration and continues to push forward. The US will not be joining them, not any time soon.
When it does, the future of space exploration from the U.S. is in the private sector, not government. Find a way to make money on the Moon and we will go back early and often. Same for Mars and beyond.
There are no firm engineering or scientific goals/objectives in global b/s that hanyone can be held to task. That way more clowns can be hired for the chorus of fools…….good bye NASA it was nice while it lasted.
Obama should have stated the truth when he spoke to NASA employees during the campaign…"when I'm elected, you'll be unemployed"! instead of promising to "save the space program, keeping the shuttle operating until the replacement was ready.
His radical wife was more forthcoming when she stated that for the first time in her life, she was proud of America for electing Obama.

Fifty years from now people won't be calling this generation anything but the dumbest and most stupid in American History for electing a skinny little con artist from South Chicago without his green card to lead the nation.

A new Challenger mission?
Oh good lord. Sorry, but the Orlando Sentinel article this is based on is just glaringly WRONG.
This is probably the most conservative thing Obama has done. Its fiscally responsible and it uses commercial providers instead of Big Government Rocket Programs. This dos NOT cancel human spaceflight and it does NOT remove the moon from the plans. What it is doing is re-jiggering the plan so it can take advantage of capability that companies like SpaceX and Bigelow Aerospace are doing. Did you know that Bigelow Aerospace already has TWO demonstration space station habitats on orbit, that he built and launched himself using his money?
The article does not mention any of the destinations that the Flexible Path option enables. It is based on limited and biased leaks to reporters who don't normally cover space policy and who have vested interested in a few thousand jobs in one district in central Florida. The plan probably includes destinations such as asteroids, Phobos (one of Mar's moons), and Venus.
Here are some more authoritative links that turn down the hyperbole a little and explain what's really going on:

I am no longer a gentle reader. I read with the purpose to discern the writers meaning, to untwist his words if he plays me for a fool, to agree or disagree, to learn and to argue. Reading is no longer a recreation for me, nor am I gentle any longer.
NASA has its' place in the US, and that, is in space, exploring and learning how to further the reach of mankind for the benefit of US citizens and by default other nations' citizens. If the US takes care of the US first, the rest of the world will benefit.
Liberals and Progressives have always hated the space program. I think the roots go back to the 1960s, when Jessie Jackson and others would protest Apollo missions because they believed that the money spent on space would be better spent on their social agendas. Environmentalists also seem to hate the space program because for some reason they believe it somehow diminishes the significance of Earth, and that by going into space we are somehow making Earth less important (I don't really understand the reasoning, but that was the overblown explanation once given to me by some eco-fanatics I used to know). So frankly, I'm not surprised that Obama is going to kill the Constellation program and keep us locked in near earth space.
Time for private enterprise to take up the slack.
Gentle Readers,
It does cancel the moon program and all manned exploration. The Obama Administration has budgeted up to
( up to, not a penny more! ) $6 billion for contracts to service the Space Station. There is no money to replace
the Space Station when it ultimately requires replacement, or any further manned exploration.
There is also no actual system for hiring the private contractors in place. At this point, it is only conceptual. A fine
concept so far as it goes, but nothing concrete and nothing beyond our current International Space Station obligations. NASA has used contractors since it's inception, but there has to be a program first! MERCURY,
GEMINI, APOLLO, SKYLAB & THE STS ( Shuttle ) are were built and operated by private contractors working for
NASA programs.
Twice in my lifetime we've had double-digit unemployment and no manned space exploration: The Carter and Obama Administrations!
Incompentence!!

"There is also no actual system for hiring the private contractors in place." There isn't? Then what's that contract that SpaceX already has for about $1.3 billion in cargo services that's been in place for over a year?
In those case private contractors didn't design the system. 80% of operational costs are fixed prior to the first preliminary design review. NASA hasn't designed a launch vehicle in over 30 years and has lots all capability of doing so. The only two companies that have designed and built launch vehicles in the last 30 years are SpaceX and Orbital Sciences.
This does NOT cancel manned exploration. At the very least it puts people back on American rockets a full four years sooner than Constellation ever could even in its most optimistic projections. And it does it for almost a third of the cost.
Hell, there's a man putting a purely private space station in orbit. He already has two test habs up there and will be putting the full manned habitat up in 2012 on a Titan V and will be ferrying customers to it using that and SpaceX's Dragon. The people with the experience who are actually doing something are NOT in NASA anymore.
Commercial manned space efforts are in a nascent stage, and all it will take is one spectacular failure to shut them down for years until the accident investigation process can be completed. The government can absorb such delays (as NASA did), but private industry often cannot. So relying on private industry to be our sole source of access to space at this point is premature and wildly optimistic.
The articles you cite add little to the whole argument because their authors are speculating as much as those "no-nothings" at the "Orlando Sentinel."
I've been following the manned space program since the 1960s, and I know all about the factions in NASA and elsewhere in the space sciences who see the manned programs as nothing but a money-siphon that diverts money from unmanned programs that can do much more pure science at much less cost. I've read the proposals to scrap manned missions completely. But the fact is, unless we continue to keep alive our conduit to space and REALLY start to branch out from this planet, there may one day soon be no one left on this planet to do research anyway, should an asteroid impact or supervolcano take us all out..
I stand corrected, sir…
Good catch…!!
A +1 to you…
My spouse works for Lockheed Martin Space Systems, so I do have a horse in this race, but this is ridiculous.
Arne Duncan is going on and on about the crappy state of schools, but the administration is further de-emphasizing math and science by cutting back on the space program. The Space Program had tangible jobs that gave kids a focus for a career.
This administration can go on and on about all the money spent on NASA, but still cling to their GPS. Can't have one without the other.
China is ready and willing to take over space, and we're going to totally pull out? We're on a way to the end of the American empire.
Let's see, the government has a vested interest in pushing "global warming" on the people to tax them and get more control over their lives. NASA gets its money from the government. Which way do you think NASA's new studies on "global warming" are going to lean?
"global warming" has revealed to be nothing but a scam thanks to whoever released the emails that revealed Climategate to the word. Scientists are now just a bunch of con-artists, worse CRIMINALS, working for the government trying to push this humongous fraud upon the world.
The reputation of Science has been tarnished for a very long time to come, but in reality, if you take a look back through time, you will find Science perpetrated frauds throughout its history. Don't take anything 'scientists' tell you as truth, remember that a lot of these people have political agendas running in the background.

Me too Randy. I usually am doing both at the same time. I used to watch the lift offs from my back yard as a child….we could see them until they disappeared into the atmosphere. This makes me so sad.
As I recall, if we were to continue with the space program of the sixties as originally envisioned, we would have landed on Mars somewhere around 1982. But the libs got the idea of ‘Why shoot all that money to the moon?’ going around by the end of the sixties and the program was killed. I pointed out to people who said that to me at the time that no money went to the moon. Instead it all went to jobs, good jobs, and created one of the largest middle classes ever in America (and probably anywhere else). Further, it has been reliably estimated that the return on investment was about $8 for every $1 spent in spin off technology which brought things like; communications technology, computer technology, image enhancement, all manner of medical devices procedures and monitoring technology and on and on. Too bad. Screwed again.
Liberals never draw anything to its intended and/or logical conclusion. They only promote programs that benefit their existence. If it is a conservative program it could be shown to be to a success and , if it is a liberal program it could be shown to be a failure as is the case in so many instances. Either way the libtards loose. Changing a programs purpose to follow liberal ideology places it under their control and then to their benefit. US independence, individual freedom, a powerful national defense, a strong national image, true individuality, free markets are some of the aspects liberals are determined to destroy. Destroying NASA is one more tool for them to bear against us. Everything that NASA represents in its original incarnation is in direct contrast ti liberal ideology. We vote, we win.
We scare because we care. DNC motto
Leaving aside the use of NASA to pursue a global warming ideology, what exactly is wrong with shutting down the space program? This actually might be one of the few things I can agree with Obama on!
Space flights is an expensive way to assuage our "national pride." When you have Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos and PayPal cofounder Elon Musk willing to put PRIVATE dollars to work instead of TAX dollars, I'm all behind Obama's plan to encourage the private sector to take over the field.
One thing Obama critics need to guard against is assailing everything he says just because he's the one getting. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. How can you possibly be against limiting government spending in a field simply because Obama proposed it? That's crazy! This is where you should applaud him and suggest other areas where the government needs to get the hell out of the way too.
Rich
Gentle Readers,
Dear mmealling2,
Thank you for the favor of your reply.
That is a contract related to the International Space Station program.
Without a program, SpaceX can't contract.
The objective of the now cancelled ARES project was to go to Mars, via the Moon.
With that project in place, SpaceX could have bid contracts, but without a program,
they can't bid anything. Conceptually, SpaceX could have bid on supply missions
to the lunar facility which was to be the jumping off point for the Mars landing.
Now, it's all just conceptual as the program is cancelled. As of this writing there
has not been a single successful private manned space venture. The private sector
has not yet achieved orbit without a government contract. As of now, the US manned
Space program is cancelled. There is no readily available private alternative.
This administration is incompetent, to say the least.

Gentle Readers,
Dear Rich,
Look at history, and please read my previous posts: During the 1960's when the Soviets were considered to be ' ahead ' in the Space Race, there was Communist Agressions in Africa and Vietnam: We landed on the Moon, returned and won that race. We withdrew from a Free & Independent South Vietnam and Africa was stable.
Then, we abandoned our manned program and from 1975 – 1981 the Communists crushed Indochina and were on the march in subsaharen Africa.
Reagan got the Shuttle flying, re-established American dominance in Space, and in 10 years the Soviet Red Army was defunct.
A vigorous manned Space Program demonstrates America's technical capability and national will in a bold and highly visible venue and enhances both our economy and military postures as well as our standing in the world.
The benefits of manned space exploration far outweigh the costs.
Kindest Regards to all,
I am,

I will just tell my 8 year old who dreams of being an astronaut that NASA is no longer going to be at the forefront of exploration of space and instead it will be a full fledged patsy of this administration's lack of imagination. Doesn't Obama have any idea what leadership means in any way? I try not to give into the idea that he is trying to destroy the United States. But this is yet another emasculation in my opinion. And quite frankly the money spent at NASA actually creates and or saves (lol) jobs unlike the bulk of the stimulus spending. This is yet another way Obama can bow to Russians and the Chinese as the United States drops to second or third place in another arena.
