Let us forget, for a moment, that “Earth Hour” is a pointless exercise serving only to make environmentalists feel better about themselves by marginally reducing electrical demand for 0.01% of the year. Let us disregard, for a moment, that the basic reason for having an “Earth Hour” in the first place is fatuous, because global warming alarmism has as much to do with actual science as alchemy does. Instead, as the MSM pushes this stupidity down our gullets once again, let us consider the effects of “Earth Hour,” in terms of power production and that environment. Indeed, a sober analysis suggests that “Earth Hour” doesn’t do anything to save a planet that doesn’t need saving and that it may in fact rather increase air pollution instead of reducing it.

Let us begin with a question: why is “Earth Hour” scheduled for the evening hours? Answer: you couldn’t do it during daylight with any credibility. Electric demand is highest during the daytime hours, therefore it’s only then that peaking units (generation assets that only operate during times of high demand) kick in to fill the gap. If “Earth Hour” were held when the sun was out, utilities would respond to the drop in demand by kicking the most expensive generating assets off of the grid. This would surely include one of our more expensive sources of power: wind turbines. According to the Energy Information Administration (EIA, a part of the Department of Energy) the cost of wind power is about 50% to 100% more than the cost of coal-fired electricity. It’s obvious that, in times of peak demand, a responsible public utility looking out for consumers’ pocketbooks (and their own profits) will shut down a wind farm in deference to a more efficient, less expensive coal plant.
Accordingly, the only possible opportunity to reduce coal-fired emissions would be during the evening hours, when demand is relatively low and it might just be possible to reduce coal-fired generation. I rather doubt that this actually happens, to any significant degree, because the above logic still applies. Nuclear power, coal-fired power and hydroelectric power – all of which are more prevalent sources of energy than wind power – are cheaper than wind power. (Yes, the energy source for a windmill – wind – is free, but the capital costs to build a windmill are relatively high, which ultimately makes wind power expensive). If a utility is going to cut back on electricity generation for 0.01% of the year, it makes economic sense to cut off the windmills first.

However, let’s also assume that “Earth Hour” had its intended effect; to reduce the amount of power generated by coal-fired power plants. That’s the environmental goal, right? The only two fossil fuels used in large quantities to generate power are coal and natural gas. Gas-fired power plants, for the most part, operate during daylight hours to meet peak demand. Those gas-fired plants that operate all of the time have a much smaller carbon footprint than coal-fired power plants. If “Earth Hour” is going to save a planet that doesn’t need saving, the practical effect must be to reduce emissions from coal-fired power plants.
So, put yourself in the role of an operator of a coal-fired power plant. When “Earth Hour” happens, what do you do? You can’t shut your boilers down. That would be foolish and irresponsible. It takes a good deal of time to shut down a coal-fired boiler and a good deal of time to start one back up. By the time you got things wound down, you would be well behind schedule in terms of starting back up so that you could respond to the temporary, sixty minute, reduction in electrical demand.

The other option would be to reduce fuel consumption in your boilers, a practice known as “reducing load” in the industry. This too has consequences when it’s time to move back into high gear. Radical load shifts result in drastic increases in air pollution, akin to what happens if you floor the accelerator on your car instead of smoothly increasing speed. Plus, you would have to be ready to instantly respond to sudden changes in demand. It would not do if a 500 megawatt coal-fired power plant was purring along, generating 250 megawatts during “Earth Hour” when, at the conclusion of the exercise, 500 megawatts would suddenly needed again. A coal-fired power plant cannot respond to that kind of demand increase at a moment’s notice. The smart thing to do would be to keep the power plant operating at capacity and dump excess electricity that was not – for the moment – needed.
The global warming crowd ought to be crowing about the way that coal-fired power generation has been drastically reduced in the United States. According to EIA statistics, the amount of coal combustion used for power generation has decreased by more than ten per cent over the last year. The EIA reports that coal consumption by the utility industry in the dropped from over a billion tons two years ago to a little over 900 million tons last year. That translates into a greenhouse gas reduction of over 200 million tons. And yeah, some of that reduction is due to the economic downturn, but a lot of it is not. Against that backdrop, “Earth Hour” is a pointless, if painfully familiar, exercise in green do-gooderism. “Earth Hour” doesn’t change a thing in any measurable fashion, but it’s an invaluable piece of environmental propaganda.

The greenies don’t want you to know that they have been successful in achieving their larger purpose: derailing coal-fired power production. They prefer to make you feel guilty about your shameless exploitation of the planet. I don’t know about you, but – to paraphrase Motel Six spokesman Tom Bodette – when “Earth Day” 2010 rolls around, I’ll be happy to leave the lights on for you.

They are nothing but s bunch of Gaia worshiping pagans…
If only we could turn out the lights in congress for a few hours.
I hear on the business news this morning, that people are less interested in being green today, than at any time in the past twenty years. The greenies have emasculated themselves.
Personally, I hear that Detroit is clearing forty square miles, demolishing 10,000 homes. Now here is an idea. All those green weenies, with time on their hands? Give them all packs of "magic seeds" and bus them to Detroit. Tell them to "plant" a wind farm.
They can wait there for the green shoots…………
I'm waiting for the greens to lead by example. When they go out and live in a hut somewhere in the middle of a rainforest, then I'll know they're serious (simply not bathing before heading out in public does *NOT* count!).. Of course, I won't follow them back to the stone age. But at least I won't have to hear them bitch about everything anymore after they get eaten by wildlife or die of a fungal infection.
I'm about ready to start planting those 'Greenies'. I'll get me a posthole digger and stuff 'em in headfirst.
Ok I'm one of those people who hate it when my kids leave on all the lights and TV's
It's not about the environment it's about $$$
So today in honor of "Earth Hour" I will be turning on "EVERYTHING"
It looks as though the "Idiot-ocracy Prophecy" is coming true slowly but surely…
You dig the holes, I'll fill them in.
Rich Trzupek,
You write excellent articles on this topic. Your facts and figures are correct. I wonder if you are in the energy industry?
"The global warming crowd ought to be crowing about the way that coal-fired power generation has been drastically reduced … by more than ten per cent over the last year. "
That would be true if that was their real goal, but it isn't. Running everyone else's life according to their whim is. By the same token, cars manufactured in the 2000s produce only one tenth the emissions of cars made in the 1970s and 1980s. Yet Greenies don't care. They still are trying to force you into a small car you don't want, (and buy light bulbs you don't want, use grocery bags you don't want, etc.). It has more to do with them not being able to see around your SUV on the highway than "saving the earth".
Here's my "Earth Hour" celebration from last year. I plan to repeat it this year. ..bruce..
Anyone remember last year when POS Gore was promoting Earth Hour and then later that evening it was reported that his mansion had it's lights on? It was hilarious..the man has no shame.
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/jeff-poor/2009/03/29...
Deal! I think, we'd work well together, with our huntin' and trackin' skills.
At least, they'd be in their proper place in the food chain.
A career criminal might love knowing when all the lights are going out so he/she can actually schedule their 'crimes of opportunity'.
So many people are dumber today than they have ever been in my lifetime. They fall for every single thing the Democrats/MSM tell them even when the logic blares the opposite. It's actually pretty alarming.
More Left wing mass masturbation.
You people just don't get it. Only conservatives have to change their lifestyle. That way the Al Gore minions out there can have all the power they want.
I can't wait until Obama send the US Army to my house to change my lightbulbs like Hugo Chavez is doing.
Anon…thoughts?
The best way to get through to them, is tie them down and force feed them salt and trans fat.
Good ole Al Gore.
Rain in the NE is Global Warming!
Snow in the NE is… "crickets."
The the author states that it is the capital costs that cause wind power to be more expensive that the other sources. Whether to shut down the windmills during "Earth Hour" would depend solely on their operating costs. If the relatively high cost of wind power is indeed due to capital costs, it necessarily follows that the operating costs are, at most, no more than equal to those of the alternatives.
These moon bats will not be happy until we are all living in hemp huts, eating turnips…..
I caught that, as well, Loftus. My understanding is that wind mills are highly dependent on peaking units, to the point that a whole lot of the cost associated with electricity from windmills is the cost of electricity from peaking units. I heard one person in the industry say that peaking units capacity has to be 90% of the windmills' capacity. In other words, you have to build peaking units that would supply basically the same amount of electricity as the windmills are capable of doing.
This is why the cost of windmills is incredibly high compared to every other form of electricity generation. They are unreliable as peaking units, and are too unreliable to be used without overbuilding peaking units. Altogether, they are just a dumb idea. If the capital were diverted to building and maintaining nuke plants, we would get cheaper electricity that is produced in a more environmentally friendly manner.
Remember, WINDMILLS ARE NOT POLLUTION FREE, because they require peaking units. Every single way we have of producing electricity has an environmental impact; the one with the least impact is nuclear power.
What a joke Earth Hour is – live in a hut if you want to make a difference….
Unfortunately, the operating costs of windmills includes the operation of peaking units, as I explain in a separate post. Windmill farms require a whole lot of backup from peaking units. Their best use is to supply a small portion of what the grid needs, which vastly limits their usefulness.
Okay, maybe Im just some hick from Arkansas,
but what is "Earth Hour?"
I know "Earth Day." (I won an Earth Day coloring constest as a kid)
But not Earth Hour.
Why would we shut down Hydro-electric, Solar, and Wind enery plants?
Do they polute less in a dorment state?
Heck even Nuke power makes no diffrence for an hour,
the rods dont even cool in that time.
So this is actually an hour of wasted energy for everything but coal, wich you can burn whenever.
Im very confused and will now sit in the corner and cry until someone can help me make sence of this.
Can I live in a turnip hut and smoke hemp?
I'll sit in for anon –
Hey Splifffyturd – you got a problem with that? Are you opposed to everyone having power and not such you filthy rich people who don't care about anyone else except the Jews?!
God you people are stupid.
Ouch, that almost hurt my brain to think in such an irrational manner!
Since I do not watch any MSM media crap, I have no idea when this hour is taking place, so I'm going to do my part by turning of my tv when BO shows up on FOX – of course I'll have every other light and appliance in the house on, as well as a couple loads of laundry and may as well have every fan on too
It's what plants crave….
I bet none of the material is being recycled, and nobody is even requesting it be recycled. That sounds, to me, like a much better project to undertake. Resources were already used to produce these materials, so recycling them will reduce resources required to produce new materials.
IMHO… I'm no green weenie, but I believe in certain, common sense things like recycling materials.
Doesn't matter. Our local utility, LIPA, told us to conserve, cut down, turn down your heating, turn up your cooling.
Many people did that. After 3 months usage went down. The utility raised their rates to make up the shortfall. Ooofah.
Detroit has fantastic pay and benefits for city worker. The average pay and benefits ( health, vacation days, sicks days, personal day off, and generous retirement) is over $ 110,000 per year. Yet, the leadership ( Democratic Party) never has ask city workers to take less.
Detroit exist to pay city worker and screw every body else.
Thanks for this informative article as I had no idea Earth Day existed! What a spectacular video too as it sends a powerful message about the global awareness of this issue. You can bet I just marked this on my calender and will be telling people about this momentous event.
I marked this on my calender because at 8:30 on 3/27 I plan on using as much electricity as I can and hope those that I love will join me in solidarity. Might even burn a tire.
Has Al Gore file a US Tax Return? Does he consider himself a citizen of the world, therefore he does not pay US taxes?
How many homes does Al Gore have in other Countries?
i grew up being taught to turn out lights as i leave the room and to not litter; i believe conservation should be seen as a practical issue and not a political weapon.
the progressives diminish any credibility to this matter with their overwrought and corrupt propaganda.
Hahahahaaaa haa ha haaaa!! Love it!
Sure, I'll bring the greenie brownies!
I also have Earth Hour on my calender. I plan to turn on all the lights, have the dish washer running, have a load of laundry in both the washer and dryer, and vacuum the house. Please join me to create an upward spike in electricity usage rather than a decline.
I thought they gave up on this silliness after last year when they realized they couldn't get every country to do it at the same time because of time zone differences. You know, the sort of thing a third grader could have figured out.
"…y’all seem to struggle with understanding the beauty of the great outdoors, an equally sad state. "
Not at all. Posters here mostly just resent being forced by either guilt or government to change their lifestyle via non-existent crises. For example, farmers and hunters are among the best conservationists in the world for the simple reason their livelihood and hobby depends on it, but you would never know that from their critics.
"Lastly, how old are those of you writing about using as much energy as possible?"
I think you're missing the sarcasm. I'm older than Earth Day (in fact it falls on my birthday) and I used to buy into all the planet saving messages. Then after many years of the planet "not" dying, I began to realize the whole movement is far more than just clean water and cute furry critters. It's about control. Now, to this day, I don't litter or intentionally pollute and I reuse what I can where I can but I certainly no longer believe the Earth is in dire straits.
Well put
So was I but to be honest when you were a kid did you?
I know I didn’t !(Most of the time)
So, what time should I turn all my lights on and crank up the furnace?
I think I'll get the Mustang out and let ALL EIGHT cylinders – burn baby burn!
Like has been said so many times "Green – It's the New Red!"
Great article. Oh, the utter stupidity of MSM. But, it does cause that proverbial "warm, fuzzy feeling run up and down their legs."
BJ posts are definitely being censored.
Great article. This "Earth Hour" stupidity has got to stop!!!
Greetings from University of Zagreb, Croatia
Only a meglamaniac [GORE] could politcise the weather… . Yes Albert.. the [weather] changes every day. Now thses nuts are saying ever instance of the [weather] changing..ie. rain, wind, fog, lightning… is evidence of [climate change]. How is it that the weatherman can't tell with 100% certainty of the weather for tomorrow? Answer-.-.-. the weather is unpredictable… they might as well use a crystal ball to predict tomorrows weather..
I love pagan religions. I can do anything I want, when I want, and get a tax deduction.
.
Heck even Nuke power makes no diffrence for an hour,
the rods dont even cool in that time.
I don't understand what you're saying here. BTW, I've been in the nuke business for-well let's just say a while.
I'd love to see more of them build AND, we should be drilling for our own oil-DUH!
Cataloging everyone who cares about the environment as deranged is counterproductive. Managing and supporting a healthy environment is an essential part of managing the economy. Neither being a pavement lover or tree hugger is inherently better (why not both?). The purpose of government should be regulation and managing externalities. Libertarian belief #1: Do are you please unless your actions infringe upon the well being of others. Trzupek is right about the effects of earth hour but not about the health of our biological systems.
I am ready to go to work. I am ready to work with the rest of you. I also understand that I may end up spending more money on the fundamentals like sewage, and health care. Our transition to renewable fuels will likely become less urgent and not be an issue in our lifetimes but please, keep on inventing. A chemical factory is beautiful in so many ways that a tree hugger might not understand but y’all seem to struggle with understanding the beauty of the great outdoors, an equally sad state.
Lastly, how old are those of you writing about using as much energy as possible?
Just saying that shutting the power plant down for an hour would change nothing.
Thats just one hour where energy is being released and not being converted into power.
Did you work at AR Nuke1?
We might have been neighbors!
It was in my back yard for a couple years.
My sister and brother in law still have it in their back yard.
I have a few times, on a short term basis. Good plants, Good folks. GREAT country livin'.
If these same people had a "vow of silence" for one hour, the amount of flatulence in the atmosphere would drop exponentially.
[...] Earth hour stupidity [...]
Anyone who's flown over Yurp on a clear day can tell you that they've totally covered their territory with buildings, cities, farms, and have pretty much used up all their space. If you can find any/any open space without humans other than the steep sides of their mountains and the bottoms of their lakes, you get a cigar.
Yet they persist in "celebrating" this "fatuous" (good word – captures the very essence of most enviros' mentalities) moment of self-congratulation.
Anyone who's flown over Africa at night can tell you that the fires set by their farmers to clear land are mind-boggling. Anyone who's flown over China, India, or other parts of Asia can tell you that some of the cities are not visible for the HUGE clouds of smog and particulates that totally obscure them.
Yet they insist on foisting on us, a heretofore major economic engine that pulls a good portion of the world's economy, and a country that continues to go to great lengths to reduce pollution, such ridiculous ceremonies as "Earth Hour."
I'm for celebrating a "Capitalism Hour" to thank everyone who works hard at something productive for providing us with a standard of living that I sincerely hope I can pass on to my kids, although hope is fading.
[...] you or someone you’re close to planning Earth Hour participation? [...]
obviously, this author – a chemist whose expertise likely lies within emission testing methodologies on the molecular level – shows his lopsided knowledge of the energy biz (and the intent of movements like Earth Hour) by neglecting a few key points.
the goal of 60 minutes with the lights off is not to affect energy consumption; it's for individuals, corporations and governmental agencies to indicate a commitment towards better respecting natural resource and utilizing it responsibly.
re: the costs of wind turbines, etc – the "don't tell me to spend more money, i like things they way they always was" mentality is antiquated and tiresome. new TVs are more expensive than old ones, because the technologies are more advanced and the return is worth the price. the same applies to advances in energy generation – yes wind farms and hydroelectric power stations are more expensive to develop; they haven't been around and with the available capital to evolve as long as fossil fuel plants.
regarding the abilities of a coal plant to respond to a sudden surge in demand following a 60 minute killswitch, they don't have to. smaller, more agile peaker plants handle big shifts in demand, many of them doing it daily for the "coming home from work" crowd. and for the base load coal plants, planning for an hour long outage for tree hugging hippies is just like planning for a maintenance halt: simple.
finally, the commentary on a reduction in coal consumption over the last year, with concrete numbers supporting. thank you. you can draw your own conclusions as to why it's happening, but perhaps you should ask if we as a society are becoming more aware of what gluttonous, consequence-free lifestyles are doing to ourselves (obesity at an all time high, life expectancy lowered for the first time in recorded history) as well as our environment.
This year I will again not participate in Earth Hour.
The Aussies started this commendable idea, and being intelligent humans, they chose to show their effectiveness at shutting down lights and using little electricity by selecting Earth Hour to occur during their summer season, when temperatures run to 30C and the sun doesn't set til 9.30 pm.
The average Aussie will celebrate Earth Day the way he will celebrate the day that preceded it: he will throw a steak on the barbie and relax on the beach with a beer (some activists will paint a few signs and march down a street or two before running off to do the same).
The joke is on us if we chose our "Earth Hour" to fall in our winter season. Does the Earth really care if we decide to celebrate our Earth Hour on July 12th? That's usually when I decide to grill my steak on the old BBQ and sit in my chair at the lake.
Let's ALL feel good about knowing we're doing a good thing! Cheers til then!
Summer in Australia ended last month. But thanks to fluctuating weather (draw your own conclusions here), I can't tell summer from autumn right now. Sunset at 9:30pm? Earth hour doesn't curb pollution, its just another overly dramatic (and yes, unnecessary) gesture to remind people what finite resources and exponential growth means.
I had to travel 60 km from my home to my work place to ensure no one turned any lights on. I now have to travel 60 km home again. I'll have used approximately 10 litres of fuel to do so, dumping nasty gases in the atmosphere. Pointless
Y'all have way too much time on your hands. Don't like Earth Hour? Don't participate.
Isn't this wonderful?
