Sitting through a Rachel Maddow commentary is difficult enough in the best of circumstances. Listening to her tortured logic (employing the word loosely) as she tried to expose the “perfidy” of lobbyist Rick Berman and Big Government editor-in-chief Michael Flynn was enough to make one’s ears bleed. Either unable or unwilling to discuss the merit of Berman’s and Flynn’s positions with regard to any particulars, Maddow relied upon a classic liberal theme song to make her point: whatever government or so-called public interests groups want to do is both altruistic and good and whatever conservatives and corporations want to do is selfish and evil.
No doubt this background music, which permeated her latest sneering rant, resonated like a symphony when heard by MSNBC’s enraptured audience of a couple dozen or so of the leftist faithful. For the rest of America, growing ever more disenchanted with the munificence of big government, it was just more liberal static.

But, once again, we must ponder the ultimately-unanswerable question: What’s the most annoying thing about Rachel Maddow? Is it the condescendingly arrogant way in which she delivers her message, or is it the appalling ignorance that forms the foundation of her message? In this particular case, I lean toward the latter.
After all, Maddow closed this “expose” by telling viewers that it wasn’t needed in the first place. “They think you’re dumb,” she said, “they” being conservative opponents who – in Maddow’s world – just have to be corporate shills. “You’re not dumb. They can’t fool you.”
That begs the question: If we can’t be fooled Rachel, why did you just waste six minutes of our lives explaining how we were being fooled? But then that’s our Rachel, if she doesn’t close with a deafening crescendo of condensation, she really can’t look face herself in the mirror the next morning.

Which brings us to ignorance. The foundation of Maddow’s hypothesis here relies upon a bedrock liberal assumption: that every public interest group – public or private – is actually interested the public’s interest. In Rachel’s world, public interest groups are chastely devoted to protecting the populace, while corporations, and by extension the conservatives who defend free enterprise, seek only to exploit the masses. An analysis, such as it is, doesn’t get more simplistic than that.
In fact, public interest groups involve as much, if not more, self-interest as any corporation. The difference is that the profit-motive is plain to see when it comes to businesses, but is – at least among the left – all but invisible when so-called public interest groups are in play. In fact, public interest groups sell a product every bit as in demand as anything that’s produced in a factory: fear.
Without a “crisis” to solve – absent a corporate enemy to fight – these self-appointed defenders of public health and welfare would wither and die from a lack of funding. Having worked in the environmental industry for over twenty-five years, I’ve seen countless examples of this behavior. An example will prove instructive:
Ten years ago, the state of Illinois was contemplating a couple of new rules that would affect the power industry in the Prairie State. The first rule effectively helped incentivize natural gas-fired power at the expense of coal-fired power. I testified before the Illinois EPA, on behalf of the natural gas utility I represented at the time, in favor of the measure, as did a lobbyist for the American Lung Association (ALA), an especially powerful public interest group when it comes to air quality issues. A couple of months later, I testified in opposition to another rule that would have put barriers – and perhaps outright banned – natural gas-fired power development in Illinois, but without mentioning coal in any way. The ALA lobbyist, to my great surprise (I was a lot more naïve back then) proceeded to testify in favor of the natural gas ban. That made no sense. How could the ALA be in favor of natural gas one day and then, a couple months later, be against it?
I called the ALA guy out on the issue, one-on-one, once the hearings were over. He shrugged – a little embarrassed I think – and then explained what should have been obvious. “I know what you’re saying Rich,” he said. “But, we’ve got our membership to think about.” Translation: the ALA can’t worry about the big picture. In order to keep donations rolling in, they have to be seen to be in opposition of the worst corporate villainy available at the time, no matter if that opposition runs contrary to their supposed overall goals. It’s all about funding, kids.

Maddow and her liberal brothers and sisters function under the illusion that the organizations which claim to have divorced themselves from prurient self-interest actually do so. The reality – and the conservative outlook is all about reality – is that so-called public-interest groups are as concerned about their own bottom line as anyone. A responsible, thoughtful journalist would take a look at these groups and wonder: who’s watching the watchdogs? Leftist cheerleaders like Rachel Maddow never worry about those questions. They’re more than willing to free the angry, hungry “watchdogs” from the leash of oversight, until such fear-mongers devour every last bit of frightened financial support that a gullible public is willing to provide.

Rachel Maddow, the boy communist, speaks…
And what you will always hear is carefully contrived left wing talking points originated by the Soros-funded think tanks.
No need to mention them; you all know who they are. But is is coordinated; and part of a last ditch effort to seize the dialectic back from the so-called 'tea party' (this amorphous 'group' causes more consternation to the left than any other movement in history) and define the debate before 'net neutrality' is imposed this fall.
The hammer will drop then. The Powers That Be are dedicated to ending the free flow of information- and putting the Andrew Breitbarts of the world- if not out of business- then expensive, and difficult, to find.
In the meantime, creatures like Maddow are for entertainment purposes only…
The progressive/socialist are not stupid or ignorent, they know exactly what they are doing. A friend of mine attended the Columbia School of Social Work, and she told me she asked a professor there how to end the homeless problem. He answered, which I believe is indicative of all the progressive/socialist do-gooders, that Homelessness would never be solved, because then they would all be out of work. Same with solving poverty, there will always be poor, so the do-gooders rig the system so they can get more money from workers to pay their salery and party, and give just enough to the poor to keep them sedate but constantly angry at not getting more. Same with the Race hustlers, no racism no payday for them, so they manufacture racism. Natural human conditions are ignored by Progressive/socialist because they want power, plain and simple.
I applaud you for being able to sit through entire segments or shows of Maddow. It's much more than I can stomach.
We need to remember that Cass was a featured speaker at a Soros sponsored conference in '05 about rewriting the Constitution. If one would bother to put together an organiztional chart, who do you think would be at the top?
Rachel Maddow is the perfect example of what is wrong with our higher learning institutes. She is a narrow minded, arrogant idiot that cannot allow any viewpoint other than that which is approved by the liberal agenda. Her rants are comically ridiculous. She is only trying to claim that the conservatives think Americans are stupid to try to give her view that Americans are really stupid more cover.
good points…
And they want to re-write the Constitution IN PRIVATE, of course, and bypassing a messy Constitutional Convention. Sunstein, and others, think this all can be done by legislative fiat without a vote of the people.
All communists think like that…
Funny, I would have never known who Rachel Maddow or that huffington witch was unless I heard about them on conservative websites.
Sounds like you guys reporting on those two should watch them less, so we won't hear about them as much.
I have seen neither in interviews be articulate, knowledgeable of the subject, or anything but condescending.
Why people watch them or invite them to be interviewed is beyond me.
Have you ever thought about how many people depend on the government, if not directly, then as part of these "service" groups? Or on even bigger scales? Simplify the tax laws and bunches of tax attorneys need to find an honest living as just one example.
The government can't organize a trip to the bathroom. Why do we expect its leeches to be any better?

Hmm, isn't there a group called the 'coffee party'? Maddow is starting to look a lot like the alien leader – Anna on 'V'. That makes sense to me.
This happens everytime Madcow mis-doses.
The myth of representative government has finally been busted. Our votes may have had power at one time, but no more. The fix is in.
Bottom line with Maddow. She's a liar and she knows it. What can you say about a person who does that? There is a point that people are just plain evil, and I think Maddow is at that point.
We always hear how brilliant she is (mostly from her), so stupidity cannot be the reason, as it is with Olberman and Matthews, who are just elevated sportsguys or weatherguys (not that all of those guys are stupid).
Also, she's a phony. A butch lesbian greaser who allows MSNBC to dress her up every night like she's a spinster schoolteacher. Is the MSNBC audience so homophobic that she can't be herself – Johnny Maddog? She does NOTHING for the gay community. She could be helping, but she just hurts. She's just mean. She's just a rotten person.
This little boy is a very confused useful idiot. I wonder what kind of child rearing Rachael received? Hopefully MSNBC will be under new ownership and change personel and Rachael will have to earn a living like everyone else!
that ship sailed- quietly at night- some time ago…
Now you have Democrats openly mocking the constitution, and the idea of representative Democracy.
As one said recently, 'they' (meaning, of course, the US citizens) want to change the country back to what
it NO LONGER IS'…
So, it would appear that at least in the minds of elected Progressives, the Jeffersonian model of Costitutional Republic with Limited Suffrage has been tossed overboard, replaced by a quasi-fascist
oligarchy.
For now…
Yawn, more of the sicko-left.
Remember in November.
DTOM! http://RightWingStuff.com
I still remember in '69, while driving down the Autobahn, my passenger, a Company man, told me that it was already just theatre for the masses. He said that JFK tried to warn us, and was silenced for his efforts.
Fine… if you like to stick your head in the sand, go ahead. I like to be prepared. Like Sun Tzu said “Know your enemy and know yourself and you can fight a hundred battles without disaster.”
I think she is rilly brillyunt. A true jeenyus! Her whitty dilivry is jest wunnerful. And she got to whear she is withowt goin to old mcdonald cornell university.
It was on my way to Spain while sitting in the club lounge last summer that I saw this Maddow person ranting on TV about the tea party people.
She was demonstrating a hard core shrilling of liberal lunacy.
Her reasoning was so absurd. No facts or conjuncture just outright heckling.
She is the kind of person that sees the religious commitment of an extreme Islamist bent on pursuing what is assumed to be a deep seated dedication to God as good, yet completely over looks the fact that the 70 virgins pinned to the reward revels the perversion of a sex fest in Heaven.
funny you say that, Deus…
we, too, have had certain Company types share almost the same info with us. Over many libations, mind you- but yeah, the 'fix' was in years ago. Maybe so, we feel that the spooks always overestimated both their worth- and their knowledge- but that certain uneasy feeling that they were right did lurk in the recesses of our craniums.
A couple of them were big on the JFK thing, kind of the Oliver Stone conspiracies except Stone was truly clueless about what they REALLY were…
Rich, excellent article.
I blew it off at the time, thinking it was just those drinks we shared at the local public house. This guy was an old timer, and probably worked with 'Wild Bill'.
I think those of us who are older (i.e. remember well the past 4 decades) need to start writing down what we have witnessed over the years. Before too long, there won't be many of us left who will recall what it was like to live in a US where one could actually move up from one social level to another through hard work. Those days are on the wane and the goal of the powerful to have only a single 'low class' and an elite ruling class are firmly in control.
Is that the kid from Boy meets world?
one of the guys we ran into was all over the Monroe/JFK/Giancanna thing; said she was 'hit' to keep her from outing Bobby, not Jack. he was insistent- and convincing as well…
well reasoned, and said…
That Maddow dude is an idiot.
I believe that Rhodes scholars are an over-rated lot. Surely Rachel could have parlayed her education into something better than being a shill for the lunatic-fringed left. Perhaps one day she'll awaken to the fact that her talents are wasted at MSLSD and either move on or try to get her money back from Oxford University.
If no one is watching her show… Does she make a noise? I think she is mad because she looks like Fred Savage.
I think the best lesson to take from this article is that fact that no matter how good the intentions of the organization they will gravitate towards more and more agenda's to keep their income sources secured. a victory will not dissolve the group after getting what they want. It will transform it. The more the groups transform the more corrupt they become.
He even hinted that there was more to that little disturbance at the Ford theatre than we'll ever know. Like mushrooms we are…..
Anna is hot. Maddow is not.
Why is that dude wearing all those pins on his jacket?
No lie: the first time I saw Maddow doing her schtick on MSNBC (having never heard of her despite her stellar career at AirAmerikkka), I thought, "Wow – who is this guy imitating Keith Olbermann? He's pretty good!"
I thought she did a good job as the actor who played the "Carter" character on ER but her talk show is horrible. She first came to my attention when she gave Frankie Schaeffer a platform to attack his parents and true Chistianity. Frankie is scum who called his mother a domestic terrorist and claims credit for much that he had little to do with in the first place.
I like the way Dr. Thomas Sowell explains it in his book Basic Economics.
There are only two differences between a for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. First they file their taxes differently, second what they do with their profits. A for-profit reinvests their profits and pays dividends. Not-for-profits do things like redecorate offices, upgrades computers, go to conferences in exotic locals.
I've been wondering about that for some time. I don't think its Soros, and I don't think its Obama either.
Perhaps its a name few people have ever heard?
The true horror of modern liberalism. Enslave people to dependency. Its a lot easier to convince people to support you if they don't eat unless you say so.
I try to remember to thank the authors at these big sites of just that.
Its a true public service to sit through this garbage so we don't have to.
Thanks for taking the bullet Rich!
Know your self, know your enemy and know your battle. Know all three and you will will. Do not know all three and you will lose.
They don't. They don't care. All they're really worried about is getting their own little pot of gold, and the rest of the world can go pound salt.
I wouldn't let her anywhere near my stomach.
Interesting thought for Areosmith, lady looks like a dude.
Or somebody, everybody knows, but would never have quessed.
I must disagree. Having spent decades on the other side as a modern liberal, trust me, they are 100% absolutely sure they are right.
That's why they are so hard to defeat. They believe they have the truth on their side. When in fact, all they have is the inability to honestly evaluate what's clearly right before their eyes.
they do like to speculate on history…
There is a whole school of conspiracy stuff on Lincoln; Jordan Maxwell for one outs him as an agent for the Illuminati and such. Booth is considered a hero by some.
Suffice to say we'll never really know…
Rachel, honey. Hormones can only take you so far. At some point you have to let the plastic surgeons go to work and build you a willy.
Madcow and her show are jokes. They next to no audience but are fun to tune into for a few minutes to see how she will carry the liberal water for the night.
You are a man and a conservative to boot…she would never come near you.
She got and is exactly what she wants….its all about power and she/he has plenty of it in her position.
That's about the only time you will ever hear a Leftist agree with Jesus, I mean Haysoos, " the poor will always be among us". No gubmint program will ever outdo Jesus, I men Haysoos.
So much for the past. As for the future, there's something smoldering in Arizona that requires fanning by Al Sharpton. Could this be the tinder that starts our 'Riechstagg' fire?
The first time I tried I threw the remote through the screen and was cussing so loud the nieghbors came over to see what was wrong. My wife no longer allows me to turn on MSDNC.
I think everybody should notice the degree of journalism employed by Maddow versus this site.
Rachel is clearly left wing in her bias, but there she still does a job that would pass any basic journalism class. This is because she leads with the background, gives the facts, incorporates both sides into her arguments, anticipates responses, invites the other side to rebut and documents their refusals to do so. While being a responsible journalist, she adds in her opinions, her analysis and on on occasion includes an insult, but pretty sparingly.
Conversely, this author begins with an insult, nullifying everything that comes afterwards. This is fine as far as free speech, but by journalistic standards it is not even an oped, it is an attack piece, void of balance in ignoring what the other side has said or would say to these charges. This does not approach what is taught in journalism courses for any age. It's legal, but it used to be called propaganda. There are far more insults in the piece than useful bits of information. In fact, he uses one claim about a single ALA lobbyist to condemn every public interest group in the country.
This is great fun for the staunch right winger coming here to see right wingers take shots at left wingers, with their minds made up, they don't want to learn through discourse between equals, they want to see their side win like a fake wrestling match. Same for HuffPo where the opposite happens.
But the big difference is this: both sides feel they have the facts on their side. But if one side includes these facts in the actual articles, conducting diligent research, constructing an argument using the undisputed, the disputed, their opinion, their opponents opinion and including it all in a persuasive way to entice the reader to arrive at the same conclusion by using their own critical thought (or corroborating it with their own independent research).
This author starts with insults, continues with insults, attempts the tit-for-tat, the false equivalency, makes mountains out of molehills and includes nothing approaching balance to persuade critical thinkers. Specifically, the false equivalency is saying the left in this case uses fear on the public in the case of advocating for fresh air. This "fear mongering" is legitimate and the documentation is overwhelming – 1/3 of schoolkids in urban schools have asthma related problems. Breathing complications are rampant, in my family and someone in your family is probably sucking Advair too because the air quality in our country has far too much pollution (mostly diesel fuel and toxic particulates).
This is not equivalent to fear-mongering like 'hey, Iraq has WMD and poses an imminent threat'.
Next the straw man trick, saying Maddow believes EVERYTHING the right EVER does is wrong, instead of addressing this one issue. If I was Berman or Breitbart and I was a journalist, I would post an article not attacking Maddow, but her argument. I would show the facts – who are Berman's donors? Without these facts, he has to concede we have no idea who is funding him and can reasonably assume he is a hired flack. What public good have these advocacy groups actually done? Show the accolades. How many real citizens do they represent? Show the proof that these are not lobbyists for money-grubbing corporations. Prove her wrong with facts.
Don't use one ALA lobbyist to smear all public interest groups, do some research and show some stats – how many public interest groups have contradicted themselves? Just the one? Make your case – is it endemic?
And leave the insults for the end, once you have made your empirical case first. Otherwise it seems like you are simply trying to foment mob hatred and you can't deal in verifiable information as well as Maddow. It seems to me this whole site is set up to pretend to be like the right wing Huffington Post, but with a lesser degree of journalism used to make the arguments.
You sure get a lot out of Rachel Maddow makes fake stuff up every night.
She really turns my stomach.
Sorry, but I don't have to study counterfeits in order to recognize the genuine.
I don't care what they play on MSNBC, I'm not watching it.
BTW, when you don't watch the bad stuff, the bad stuff is very, very obvious.
Yo, Yo, did you go to P.S. 154 in Brooklyn also??? I recgonize the writing style. ;0)
Never heard of this person! I checked out MSNBC a couple of years ago and never went back.
"…a deafening crescendo of condensation…"
"…a deafening crescendo of condescension…"
um, was that an oops?
FYI, Rhodes was a Progressive.
I try to remember to thank the authors at these big sites of just that.
Its a true public service to sit through this garbage so we don't have to.
Thanks for taking the bullet Rich!
She's not doing anything new. She's just playing to the old caricatures from FDR's days. Any one who doesn't agree with her is nothing more than they little guy from the monopoly box.
Maddow – in her blind cohesion to all that is liberal garbage – misses out on the gift of her own intelligence by shilling for the moonbat agenda. Instead, she uses her brilliance (and I object to those who think she's not) to portray herself as a condescending ass, who is nether likable nor honest in her assessments.
Her smug attitude, combined with a grin that is in constant shit-eatin' mode, makes her almost as despicable as Olberdouche.
whoa, when did msnbc give jerry seinfeld a new show? He should go back to stand-up.
the MSM is seriously misreading the new law down there- and the requisite response from the citizens. First of all, the number of illegals in the US is declining- they are going back to Mexico in droves; up here waitsatff are bussing their own tables… second, this isn't a race or immigration issue but a legal and economic one.
The Feds think this is a winner for them. Wrong… the numbers they hope to have on the voter roles are far short of what they need. And the number of hacked off people is growing exponentially. Reichstag fire? maybe. But new
American Revolution in it's nascent stages? Sure looks like it…
This is starting to look like a crisis that our dear leader is not going to let go to waste. Does this fool really want to start a race war?
if you study Alinsky- or Machiavelli- you'll see this is classic tactics of divide and conquer- and if a race war is needed, so be it. At the end of the day this bunch are elitists, and eugenicists- so a body count doesn't bother them.
That is, of course, as long as it isn't them…
oddly enough, they know their minion clss will be the first to be targeted…
And they don't give a tinker's damn. Fact is, they are inviting it- so they can demonize their opponents- while themselves, of course, being safe. Such is the nature of The Beast, Deus…
If a body count is what they want, I'll personally make sure they are counted, and the first ones to get it in the neck will be the RINOs that allowed this to happen.
