If Newsweek is right, we won’t have to worry about corrupt Chicago politics much longer because, according to the magazine’s recent, rather hysterical tribute to global warming hysteria, the Windy City won’t be around much longer. Entitled “100 Places to Remember Before They Disappear,” the limited edition, “special feature” issue of the magazine is Newsweek’s latest and greatest venture into what I like to think of as environmental porn; stories and pictures designed to make tree-huggers quiver over the righteousness of their cause.

Global-warming is responsible for this supposed disappearing act of course, for a variety of contradictory reasons. In Chicago’s case, heat waves and flooding will destroy my hometown, which is pretty remarkable considering that the city is over 650 feet above sea level. When the deluge comes, perhaps we could move from the Windy City to a picturesque Italian village like, say – Principato di Lucedio? Let me check…
Rats! Seems that Priciparto di Lucedio is going to run out of water because of global warming. And, it further seems that we can’t escape to the tropics either, for, in the case of the lush Hawaiian island of Kauai, it might get wetter and it might get drier, but it really doesn’t matter, because any change at all seems to be bad. Thus sayeth Newsweek of Kauai’s fate:
Large parts of the mountainous island are swathed in cloud. These lush and mossy forests are home to the colorful Hawaiian honeycreeper, an endangered bird species. Even small shifts in rainfall patterns could cause major local changes, putting the islands’ distinct ecosystem under severe stress.
It’s all pretty much like that, with words like “may” and “could” tossed about so liberally by writer Fareed Zakaria that you get the impression the editors employed a Magic 8-Ball as their primary editing tool. All these disasters “could” happen, and they “may” happen entirely naturally, but environmentalists live out a fantasy in which nature is, or can be made to be, stuck eternally on hold, circa 1850.

The more interesting “could” associated with increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is that of a more fertile, vibrant earth. Dr. Craig Idso is rather adamant on that point, having done a great deal of research that suggests we don’t have nearly enough of the stuff in the atmosphere compared to the demands of plant life. But, that particular “could” hardly makes for a sexy enviro-disaster piece, so you rarely hear about it outside of global-warming skeptic circles.
As a vacation planner that includes some pretty exotic locales, Newsweek’s special global meltdown edition is kind of interesting. As another doomsday prophecy however, it falls flat for all but the most ardent of the alarmist crowd. Overall, one gets the feeling that if Newsweek continues to churn out leftist pap of this sort, the publication will move high up on the list of the “Top 100 Old Media Outlets to Remember Before They (Finally!) Disappear.”
And that just might be a thing devoutly to be wished.

Newsqueak? Are they still around?
How can a "Greenhouse Gas" be bad? What happens in greenhouses? Oh yeah, they grow plants…
Climates change, that's what they do. It needs no help or nudge from us. if you don't believe me, just ask The Anasazi.
I saw this on their website the first day it came out. They don’t even try to use “proof” for any of it (because they don’t have any). This “could” happen. That “might” happen. This way they can fight being held accountable for their waste of paper special edition.
Send their sorry asses to the Artic in tee shirts in July and report back on global warming.
1- Newsweak is still around???? (I know, everybody keeps asking that)
2- Is loosing the Chicago Land Area really a loss? Really, think about it./ somewhat sac.
3-This isn't about saving the planet. No matter what we do, the planet will go on. This is about about control through fear, aka terrorism.
4-The environment IS going to change, it is constantly in flux, has been since the planet formed.
Isn't their hysteria just going to encourage tourists to go visit these places before they disappear, thus increasing CO2 output, thus leading to global warming?
Nah, to the Antarctic.
If you're not for climate change legislation, you're just a roadblock to needed progress in this area of importance to many millionaires. You don't have any ideas/plans to combat global climate change, so you should be silenced..
At least to the dems it seems that way..
The same outfit ran an issue with the cover of Al Gore titled "The Thinking Man's Thinking Man" . Mad Magazine has more credibility.
If it ever comes to cannibalisum, this old wolf knows where he can find some grass-fed sheep.
I wouldn't waste my money on their opinion..which have zero value to me..I quit subscribing to all materials that don't offer balanced news..If they want to pimp for the administration..have at it; but not on my dime.
I liked the hockey stick graph. So many uses for that old stick. Old schtick? I remember in the 70's there was worry about a new ice age. Algore has a statue of chicken little in his front yard. Even the pigeons won't poop on it.
I haven't read the Newsweek article so… But one thing is obvious we have Rich Trzupek's hysterical hyperbole commenting on Newseek's hysteria followed now by bigjouranlism fans' hysteria and hyperbole. Not much real info here just a lot of yammering.
Nah, its about desperately trying to raise their sale numbers before their parent company shuts them down to improve their bottom line.
Last year or the year before, a couple of reporters visited the Library of Congress and started researching climate reporting in the past. I found it on the web which makes me wonder if the MSM spiked it.
Seems every 25 to 25 years, going back to the mid, late 1800's, the media have run this story. Global warming will kill us, wait a generation, then global cooling will kill us. Back and forth, back and forth.
Expect global cooling in about another 10 years.
Newsweek is so lame. They literally repeat each and every scare without a shred of scientific evidence to back it up. They specialize in anecdotal stories and pure speculative predictions from climate scientists and their models. Regarding past and current warming, Newsweek "journalists" would be better informed if they checked out the actual facts. Here are two pages they should spend some time reviewing before putting pen to paper:
http://www.c3headlines.com/temperature-charts-his...
http://www.c3headlines.com/modern-temperatures-ch...
; Plots 24 yearly maps of calibrated (PCR-infilled or not) MXD reconstructions
; of growing season temperatures. Uses “corrected” MXD – but shouldn’t usually
; plot past 1960 because these will be artificially adjusted to look closer to
; the real temperatures.
; Computes regressions on full, high and low pass Esper et al. (2002) series,
; anomalies against full NH temperatures and other series.
; CALIBRATES IT AGAINST THE LAND-ONLY TEMPERATURES NORTH OF 20 N
;
; Specify period over which to compute the regressions (stop in 1960 to avoid
; the decline
What more do you need?

yeah, but most of those are probably Vegans and vegetarians, and they are all scrawny and sickly looking. probably taste nasty, and have almost no meat on them.
Pointing out that "might", "maybe", and "could" mean exactly the same thing as "fat chance" sure settles some people right down.
fareed zakaria is always cited as an expert on islamic issues.
now he is an expert on environmental issues too?
wow, this guy must be even smarter than obama!
Actually cannibalisum means eating your own kind, and these pathetic creatures are not related to me in any way. I take your point and observation.
Look out everyone. The usual suspects are desperate to resurrect the entire Man Made Global Warming mythology. Like any good scam there is just enough of a kernel of truth to keep this going. There is no doubt that Carbon Dioxide is a Green House Gas. There is no doubt that Mn has contributed to the increasing Carbon Dioxide Levels. There is no doubt that temperature increased from the late 70's to around 2000 to 2001. There is plenty of doubt and plenty of evidence that most if not all of the warming was caused by other natural forces. What warming that Carbon Dioxide can be responsible for is impossible to determine because of the varied and multiple feedbacks at work in the Climate System.
What Newsweek has done is not Journalism but bad Science Fiction without a consistent theory or supposition to hold the story together. They just picked 100 easyily known places and cooked up a disaster they could blame on Global Warming. What they fail to say is that even in the most dire predictions it is the temperatures at the poles that is most effected. As we go further away from the polar regions towards the equator the effects actually become dramatically reduced to even some cooling at the equator. More moisture will be able to be carried in the atomosphere. There will be less of a temperatur gradient from polar to equatorial regions which mean that the likely hood of Mega Storms decrease not increase. It is cooling that causes the ability of these mega storms to develope because of large temperature gradients.
There has been so much hype, so much misinformation regarding this story that unless you have a very good understanding of scientific fundementals it is too easy to be led astray by either side of the argument. It actually causes great harm when people who sound like experts make a fundemental error when trying to refute Man Made Global Warming and gives the alarmists more ammunition to spread further disinformation by pointing out the errors of the counter argument. Remember they are looking for any ammunition to discredit the messenger and if any error can be found then they will paint with a broad brush any counter argument as flawed.
Can we please get some global warming in Chicago this year? We haven't had a decent summer in 5 or 6 years. We can't even use our outdoor pool regularly because the temperature drops so much at night the water doesn't stay warm.
Damn, REALLY??? Thanks News "cough, cough" Week….

Global warming will destroy the world.
Well, that's what the carbon credit opportunists, and the loony progressives want us to believe.
And for how many decades has Florida supposed to be flooded, and under water now?
The truth, and common sense observation of the facts, will prevail.
But not until they waste billions, as the dems still have power.
Glen Beck was Awesome last night! Pointing out who is running the
scam – Goldman Sachs, Oboma and George Soros
The entire purpose of the media has devolved into selling advertising. When will they figure out that outrageous only sells to those who agree with you (a small base)? The rest of us would prefer balanced and honest. And then they wonder why sales are going down. Do you think they're angling for a government bailout?
And you know what horticulturists blast into the greenhouses to aid plant growth? CARBON DIOXIDE.

WashingtonExaminer: Fannie Mae owns patent on residential 'cap and trade' exchange
Patent No. 6904336 was approved by the U.S. Patent and Trade Office on Nov. 7, 2006 — the day after Democrats took control of Congress. Former Sen. John Sununu, R-N.H., criticized the award at the time, pointing out that it had "nothing to do with Fannie Mae's charter, nothing to do with making mortgages more affordable."
It wasn't about mortgages. It was about greenbacks. The patent, which Fannie Mae confirmed it still owns with Cantor Fitzgerald subsidiary CO2e.com, gives the mortgage giant a lock on the fledgling carbon trading market, thus also giving it a major financial stake in the success of cap-and-trade legislation.

THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE! HOW CAN THEY BLAST POISON ONTO PLANTS AND EXPECT THEM TO GROW!!!!
And with republicans like Lindsay Graham, who needs democrats?

Don't mean to nit pick – but that photo is of a hydrogen bomb detonating – not a nuclear bomb. A very big difference. I feel a letter coming on. Who out there knows the difference between a nuclear bomb and a hydrogen bomb? What is the maximum yield of both? How do we measure it? Last question – Who detonated the largest bomb on record?
