Some who participated in Desert Shield and Desert Storm may remember Eskan Village outside Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I see it as one of the best examples of what Congress should have done with Obamacare, what we can no longer do and how we have failed as the people of a nation. Also, I’m originally from Kentucky and a Pisces…. so forgive me a ramble to the point.
When we first got to Saudi Arabia in August 1990 I was in Al Jubal with 7th Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB), first living in a warehouse and then moving into a camouflaged area in the middle of a blacktop parking lot with the 7th MEB map stock. It was shaded, we had cots and a nice breeze off the water and everyone left us alone – except for one occasion when General Boomer gave a televised interview in our living space. With the cammy netting it looked like he was somewhere out into the desert. Only a few of us knew where it really was.
In early December while we were still in Desert Shield waiting for the buildup of the Army supply train, I went to Riyadh to be the Marine Intelligence rep to the ARCENT (U.S. Army Forces, Central Command) G-2. That was cool since it gave me the opportunity to grab every report that wasn’t nailed down to fax to MARCENT (U.S. Marine Corps, Central Command). Hey, it’s what we do. They had half the Army supporting them…so why not take advantage. Of note, we were living and later also working in very nice town homes and buildings in Eskan Village.

I don’t know the dates or the complete background, but Eskan Village was originally built for a nomadic Bedouin tribe. The Saudi government built this beautiful (by Saudi standards) fully self sufficient town in the desert outside of Riyadh. It had hundreds of town homes, major buildings for schools and other services, a multi-building market area and a pool. Like I said, they built it entirely for a tribe of Bedouins who had wandered the desert living a life they had lived for centuries. The Bedouins were extremely self sufficient and most would agree of hearty stock.
When Eskan Village was completed, (and here it gets into the story as told to me at Eskan Village) the Saudi government met with the Bedouin leaders to give them the keys to the town homes. Everything was going great until one of the Bedouin leaders asked “Where are the stables?”
“What stables?”
“The stables for our camels?”
“There are no stables for your camels. Your people are expected to give up their camels and settle down here.”
To which the Bedouin leaders said, “Here are your keys back”, and the Bedouins returned to the desert. And that’s why there was a huge, empty town for CENTCOM (U.S. Central Command) and ARCENT forces to move into in 1990.

More to the point, what the Bedouin leaders did that day is what, effectively, Congress should have done March 21, 2010 when Obamacare came up for vote. They should have given the Senate back their keys.
We, today’s Americans, would never have crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains, Smokey Mountain or entered the Cumberland Gap wilderness. We would never have crossed the central plains. We would never have made it to the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains, let alone ever considered crossing those mountains to find an inhospitable desert to cross to get to the Pacific Ocean. We, today’s Americans, if we had even made it out of “the old country”, would have sat on top of ourselves along the eastern shoreline; scared to enter the woods or face the unknown continent that lay before us.
For we are now domesticated livestock. No longer willing to risk our warm beds to seek out our fortunes, we live at the beck and call of our government. We do what our government tells us to do, when they tell us to and for whatever reason our government tells us to. We no longer vote in members of a representative government, we are now content to vote in our caregivers.
On March 21, 2010, our caregivers chose comfort over liberty, contentment over freedom, ruling class power over We the People.
In the end, unlike the proud Bedouins, we chose the keys over our camels.

Not all of us.
Steve – Great article and great point. And thanks for the memories – I'm one of the few guys still walking around my Division with a Desert Storm patch on my right shoulder (VII Corps!). And I lived in those warehouses for a while after the Devil Dogs moved West.
‘What Do We Do With Our Camels?’
~sigh~ I have an extremely warped mind.
I spent time at Eskan Village while I was assigned to Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi…
…I didn't know the history of the place, but I knew it was a nice change from the dorms of PSAB…
…as for this current generation of Americans, I have this hope – if we lose America to the enemy Socialist Empire…
….I pray my grandson (that's him my avatar) and his generation renew the Spirit of Liberty and form the Rebel Alliance…
Youth.
We need to sell youth on the ideals of freedom. They are the natural risk takers. Yes, they have no wealth to lose, but their life dreams are at stake. Their future has been mortgaged, their freedom sold, to fund the nanny state. Sell them on the dream of liberty and we have our country back.
The rebel alliance is already forming. Every day that goes by brings more and more into the fold as daily events show us how screwed up those in power have become.
You are right, 'Oregon' – the Tea Party movement is one such alliance – May the Force (of Freedom) Be With Us….
well, we could quote Santayana here but that would be a cliche…
Still, one would be well served to remember their history. Even very recent historical lessons as is pointed out here.
Part of the problem is arrogance. As in Desert Shield- the arrogance of 'knowing better' than the Bedouin what was good for them.
Cut to: Present day.
Obama and his totalitarian hit squad definitely know more than Any Human Being Ever Created. And us mere mortals must withdraw unanimously and allow them to pursue their course. Or else be branded racist pigs. Problem is, for them-
no one is buying it…
What do we do with our camels? Hmmmmm, so many possibilities…..most not fit to print here.
Great anology. We do seem to have lost our rugged individualism.
Ah, serving foreign monarchs……for "democracy" of course.
"but their life dreams are at stake"
no kidding
Sad, but great observation. Last week, in a class on the American Revolution, a student opined that American's would never be able to win a war again. He said that we would not be able to do the fighting. When I asked him what he would do if an enemy came to his town?? His answer, he would go and talk to them to find common ground and try to help them adjust to the new multicultured society they represented. Needless to say, I was floored and could not respond to such limp-wristed sentiment. I can only hope that he is in the minority opinion.
There are those willing to fight, but they are constantly told to be quiet.
I was recently "disinvited" from commenting over at Hot Air for my "Jeffersonian Fantasys".
Because of my belief that some of us WILL fight when pushed too hard… and for repeating sayings by the Founding Fathers… I was not welcome on that supposedly "Conservative" Board.
When even the Conservatives won't talk about fighting for what is right… the media war has been lost.
But fear not, we're still out here… and there ARE folks in the up and coming generation who are also willing to fight for their beliefs (my 19 year old son, and 4 of his friends, are either on Delayed Entree, or Active now).
Nice article, but “We” did nothing of the sort. “They” did. The F’ing Congress-creeps in the Democrat party. Americans were saying no and they said “Yes, yes, yes!”
Which is why they must go in November. The whole camel dung smelling lot of them.
lmao
I'm a Texan and I understand that warped mind. "Texas, where the men are men and the cows are scared." Just tryin to help you man.
During the Obamacare railroad, er, I mean “debate,” one of the big selling points among the Democrats was that parents could actually keep their kids on their insurance policies until they were 26. Until they’re 26??? How is that a benefit? Does the government now expect me to support my kids until THEY have kids? I expect my two kids to not only be employed by 26, but to be well on their way to having their own solid careers and even (dare I say it) living in their own apartments or homes.
When I got out of college in the dark days of 1982, we were also in the midst of a deep recession. I was on my own now and had to make my way as best I could. I was actually excited about being on my own because it made me feel independent. Although jobs were very scarce, I eventually found one and made a career for myself. Nobody helped me and nobody was expected to help me. I was an adult now and was expected to fend for myself.
So what happened to today’s youth? Are we now expected to raise them, house them, feed them, dress them, and INSURE them until their 30s? What a bunch of wimps are growing up in this country.
I for one would never have voted for that miserable pile of paper, or any representative who would have supported it, so what the author means by we is he has a cricket in his pocket.
We can turn this mess around but it will take at least a generation. Men need to start teaching their sons to be men. America's problem, at its root, is the emasculation of its men. Every issue that we face as a nation is going to require real men to step up and face what needs to be done. Look at congress during the healthcare debacle. The effeminate dogs were to soft to take a stand… even the wrong stand. They didn't want to vote either up or down. They are the epitome of cowardice. They represent what is wrong with our nation. It is time to throw the delicate little creatures out and replace them with men who have a pair and with women who have backbone.

I have to disagree. We are the same people we've always been but since the fall of the USSR/Berlin Wall we've lacked a challenge to focus on. This lack of a credible threat has led to lots of silliness (reality?! TV anyone?). Now that we have a new and very visible threat we the American people are starting to wake the F*** up, pay attention, and get organized. I'm not 100% the Tea Party is going to have its act together enough this election cycle to really make a difference but I'm willing to bet that come 2012 the Tea Party will be a force to be reckoned with.
The big questions are whether or not the current crop of Republican blow-hards is going to pull their head from it's current lodging place far up their own rectal cavity and become what America needs them to become. Whether we can actually get people in office who will represent our views and whether we the American people can learn to grow-up and acknowledge that free speech means that people will say things we find offensive, that to remain a free society we need to take responsibility for our own actions and allow others to do the same, and that without constant supervision the adult childern who seek political office will do naughty things.
I agree, us Conservatives have been so whipped by PC sentiment that we cow easily for fear of upsetting someone or being called racist. That has to stop.
I am hoping that the younger generation will reaffirm the American ideals, and your son and his friends give me hope.
I agree with your premise but you don't go far enough. The women need to step up too. 2nd/3rd wave feminism has make weaklings out of women as well as men. Men have to learn to be self-sacrificing and brave and noble and all that–it isn't natural. Women have to learn to stick by their principles and rock the boat and accept only men of high standards–also not natural. Feminism since women got the vote is about lowering the standards for both men and women to what comes naturally–which may be easy but isn't necessarily good. It isn't natural to embrace freedom–America is almost alone in making the attempt. What we have to do is fight our natures and become better than nature intended. All of us. Or at least enough that those who shelter behind will be able to live 'naturally' in an unnaturally protected environment. You know, like Europe.
Eskan Village! I lived there while in SA. Nice houses. I still have my card to check out videos at MWR along with a few other momentos. It was my favorite (read: most comfortable) TDY during my career.
Wrong! We give up freedom for safety every day. In many, many ways. Is it really freedom to have your person and luggage searched to board a plane? No. But, you are more than willing to give up that freedom for safety. Seat belt laws? Your govt tells you that they must be worn. Is that freedom? No, but you buckle up whenever you drive don't you? How about minimum wage laws? If you own a business you must meet that minimum – is someone else telling you how much to pay your workers equal to freedom in any way? No but we allow govt to mandate that minimum to us. How about marijuana laws? Somehow govt outlawing a PLANT is a sign of freedom to you? No way James – Health care is just the latest and greatest example but there are so many examples of govt intrusion into personal decision making that most people can't see the forest for the trees. Give me back my freakin camel!!!
A Tea Party forming a rebel alliance in Oregon? Grew up there. Left when I could no longer find a single man who was a man in the city of Portland. I assume you are starting outside Multnomah County and catching the isolated hopeful as you go. Best of luck. Perhaps your efforts will restore Oregon as the "Land of the empire builders. Land of the golden West. Conquered and held by free men, fairest and the best,." Onward and upward…
Women need to learn to protect our womanhood but physically and spiritually. When the womens' rights movement went beyond equal work equal pay, they went off the rails. The hags told us that men had taken our power, and we should have sex with whomever we please to show our power. They failed to mention that we would no longer be protecting valuable aspects of our femininity and even our humanity. No one TAKES the power they were talking about, it comes from within.
Some of us Americans would cross that continent. Just to escape the taxes and govt intrusions.
I remember my days in Desert Shield/Storm. I was a Soldier at the time. We set our tents outside King Khalid Military City (KKMC), and from there we went up to Bashrah. The entire time we were there, my unit lived in the Desert, it was tough, but we did what we needed to do.
I learned to respect the indomitable spirit off the nomads. Bhedud are a proud bunch, and we would do well to look at them and remeber that sometimes we might be called upon telling the government to keep the keys to the Villa.
Red47,
I was born and raised near Portland (AKA SanFran on the River, Seattle is AKA SanFran on the Sound) and I left it during my military days, and forever back in 1998 or 1999…
The Loonie Left had over-run the place and I could not stand them…
Lost,
May God Bless your efforts. I have relatives still living in the Peoples Commune of Oregon.
I hope you succeed.
Dcase,
I wish it were "no one is buying" but far too many still seem convinced he is on the right track.
We need to say vigilant, stay on point, and win the day.
AMEN!!! I with you Red!
Mr. Clayton,
Firstly, veteran to veteran, I thank you for your service and sacrifice.
Secondly, fabulous article! Masterful analogy. But as many others have said, we are not all limp wristed nancy boys. I certainly am not, nor are you.
What needs to occur is a change in leadership. NOt just the CINC, but all leaders at all levels of America. The nancy boys, and rosie o'donnels need to be set aside, and the Real Men and Real Women who have the REAL American spirit singing in their veins MUST Step up to the point and TAKE OVER THE LEAD.
We have an entire generation of young people who have been lead FAR FAR ASTRAY…
Now is the time for all good men and women to step up their game and LEAD!
By the time I graduate high school, I had already had three jobs. I now have four teenagers, and only the oldest, who turns 20 in June, has ever had a job. I don't think my kids are the exception; I believe, based on what I see and hear, that this is typical. I don't know if it's the schools, TV, or what, but there doesn't seem to be the work ethic with teens now that used to be the norm. They want to have money, but they don't want to work to earn the money. It's pretty scary if this really is how most teens think.
I left 5 years earlier. Moved to San Diego because I had met a military man who actually had manners and confidence. In San Diego, I had a chance of finding one that was a good match for me. Married my hubby and looked back with sadness for the unhappy souls trapped in the abyss of Progressivism.
Ahh the memories, does any one still have their "First and Hopefully Last El Eskan Turkey Day 5K Trot" T-Shirt? You weren't really there unless you have one.
El Eskan, it was a lot better than the New Jersey Army Barracks I deployed from.
Thanks for your encouragement. I too have lived in Portlandistan and could not stand it! I live by design in the only area of Oregon that has a Republican Representative, Greg Walden.
the tipping point was reached last September…
Since then his disapproval has trended steadily past his approval on a fairly steady decline. So, more appropriately it is less people are 'buying it' every day…
God does bless our efforts. All of our efforts and we will succeed! Evil, which includes the majority of politicians in power, will never win.
The whole mess has already turned around. We just have to wait out the calendar our founding fathers set up for voting to make it a reality. Any beekeeper will tell you each beehive has its own personality and temperament. Slavery to socialism is a non starter for the descendants of our Revolutionary War ancestors. This beehive of liberty loving people aren't falling for it.
Dcase,
A fair and accurate statement. But still too many in my book are ""buying"…
I try to will say it a different way. I am deeply saddened that this great country has fallen so far in so short a time that there are anything more than 1%-3% of Americans who buy into this marxist/socialist bullcrap.
So many good people died on foreign soil protecting their descendents futures only to have them GIVE IT AWAY…
Good for you ma'am!
I keep trying to get my relatives to move out myself.
Are the Mooslims running roughshod over Prortland? I thought it was just the lefty's and gays overtaking the city (I am not anti-gay, but it is not family friendly, and far too many of them are lefty for my taste).
I do like the term "Portlandistan" but I truly hope my old hometown is not going mooslim like Londonistan has in UK…
It's just an expression, David. However, I'm no expert on its demographics. I left in 1981 and have spent as little time as possible there since.
I'm not anti-gay either, but to give you an example of the loonacy of the majority of the people, it was well publisized that the mayor, Sam Adams, had an affair with an under-aged male supporter and he was still elected mayor. They get exactly what they sow.
That makes me happy, because when the sh*t starts flying, and it will, after reading your profile, I'd much rather be standing side by side than faced off in front of you.
I heard he was robbing the "lockbox" for the massive sewer system upgrade to pay for bike paths and other stupid stuff.
I predict a Portland Bailout in the future…
I agree, they reap what they sow. I could not STAND Katz, Blumenaur, etc…
I heard Lars Larson is now a right wing talking head pundit dude, I always liked him on old KPTV…
Awww Shucks!!! I ain't nuthin…
You should see the real bad dudes I get to work with!
I'm not fit to carry their water…
But I hope and pray it does not come to violence or even feces tossing, beacuse I love this land and all it stands for (stood for?).
Be well!
Since the real Obama came out of the closet, more radical progressive/socialist people have felt freer to voice their beliefs. They advocate teaching "Social Justice" in middle schools. They are taking away our belief in our God by twisting the biblical scriptures to their own liking and insisting that our beloved Constitution is a living proclamation that changes with the times. Even so, I still believe in the goodness of real Americans to see what is happening in our country and standing up for our God given rights.
We The People will not let others to have died in vein. We will not cower in a corner, nor sit down and shut up. We will not. We will face our opponents and stand up and shout. WE ARE FREE. WE ARE FREE.
Uhhh, like, maybe our Washington Congress-creeps could take all those camels they collected and ride them out of town.
While I agree with your overall comment, I vehemently disagree with "Throw them all out!" That sentiment started in 2006 on the democrat side, spread to the republican side, then everyone forgets that only republicans got thrown out. Not one democrat lost their re-election. The republicans got suckered.
At this point in history, the conservative/republican fight should happen only in the primary. Come general election, I don't care if Alfred E. Newman is on the republican ticket that's who I'm voting for. We have got to take away the democrats' ability to do any further damage.
AMEN Brother!
Amen!
YES we are free!
Thanks for yet another good reason why I homeschool my kids…
Sometimes, government is an evil necessity. However when they levy heavy taxes on your business and take away and destroy your livelihood, or your freedom to gather or freedom of speech, and label your beliefs as fanatic, terrorist or dangerous with derogatory remarks from the Whitehouse, and then tell you just what kind of health care you will be getting for your taxes, then government is not longer a part of a free society.
We are not Socialists. We are a Republic. THIS IS OUR COUNTRY. And this country will not stand for Socialistic takeovers.
My four kids weren't home schooled, but they were well schooled in hard work. The boys always played sports and at ten years of age had daily jobs delivering paper routes. They made their own bargains with business owners to make down payments and time payments to buy things like skateboards and bikes. They worked every day since the day they got out of high school. If they by chance lost a job, they had found another within a week.
The girls also played sports and worked while attending high school and got good jobs after they graduated and are still working today. I'm proud of all my kids. And believe me, they all are 100 percent conservative Americans.
Great comment, APatientMan — However, I must disagree with one example you gave, which is the seatbelt law.
When a car is involved in a crash, seatbelts can save lives, not just in your car, but in nearby cars and on nearby sidewalks, with people not involved in the initial crash.
Why? Because if a person can avoid serious injury and unconsciousness, they can often steer away from a secondary collision. Failure to wear a seatbelt can increase the chances of the driver becoming disabled, rendering him/her incapable of steering away from secondary impacts with another car or pedestrian.
Never saw Eskan. Was in beautiful, sunny, Al Kharj living in a tent during Desert Storm.
MinnSam,
I'm sure they are. Sounds like you did a good job. I meant nothing disrespectful in my comment.
My kids range from 11 to 1 and if middle school is advocating "social justice" today, I thank God we kept ours home schooled. That is all I meant.
My upbringing was much same as your kids. I had a paper route, I worked at Burger King. I bought all my own stuff on my nickle.
I've been working pretty much non-stop since something like 1979…
Good job on your kids sir.
What is wrong with you? Are you crippled? If you are, then I'm sorry to hear that….. as for this granpa….. I'm ready to kick ass and take names. There isn't a young person I've met yet that I can't outwit, outsmart, or outfox before they know what hit them. You are going to wait on them?
I didn't take anything you said as disrespectful. I'm not a youngster anymore (I had a work permit since I was 13) and in my time home schooling meant a person lived too far out in the country to be bused to school. The only available alternative was Catholic school. Even that was way beyond my means at the time.
I sometimes did the paper routes, or drove while the kids ran their routes on foot just so they could make it in time for baseball practice. Since they both had coaches who lived on their routes, the coaches readily excused them from the pre-game exercises because by the time they got to practice the kids were already warmed up.
My kids are grown up now but they were a joy even when they were young. Enjoy your kids as, like you, they’re only young once.
Good luck to you and thank you for your comments.
smoke-em if you got-em.
Amen Red. We don't typically address women's issues at Westfrat. It's not the place of men. If women are ever going to reclaim what they have lost, strong wise women like yourself will have to take a stand against the fempires that are sucking the life out of western society.
Reminds me of a joke. "uh…sir…usually we just ride the camel into town"
The other day, I watched an interview with Pennsylvania's Governor Rendell. I don't remember what the topic was, but he was reading a litany of reasons why people should support whatever it was. Tax credit for this. Tax credit for that. Government handout for something else. It turned my stomach. How about you just not take my money in the first place? Then you don't have to dream up ways to give it back.
Hallelujah AMEN!
We are on the same side!
Conservatives need to use Facebook, Twitter, etc, like the left did in the 2008 election. Capitalize on the forms of media that appeal to the young voting base.
Actually we were not given keys, and our camels were taken away. What we were given instead were screws and screwdrivers, — and instructions to "go screw yourselves."
Clay,
Right now I can't imagine voting for a democrat EVER, but I have not voted for a Democrat since way before I got out of the Navy in 1986…
But I want all the Progressives OUT! All the RINO's OUT.
In the primary, absolutely. However, come time for the general election, it's party down the line. We do agree, though. A bumper sticker that I have on my truck says, "I'm an Independent because the Republicans aren't leading and the Democrats steal". I had one hundred made and gave out most at least year's local tea party event.
Alright, Gramps !…..I'm with you….!…..Thanks for the pep talk – I'm back in ACTION….!…
as long as you have a corrupt media carrying his water for him you will have skewed results…
But less and less people are accepting these so-called statistics. The general mood out there is of discontent; any 'happy news' is whistling past the graveyard- on a gut level Americans feel their freedoms threatened. The MSM will do their best to twist this- but with little avail. What concerns us most is the next 'crisis'- which they both desperately want- and need.
They would like to- to use baseball parlance- change everyone's 'eye level' a little bit…
dcase,
I tend to agree. I got a little over loaded with too much crap yesterday and I let it get me down.
I strongly feel the MSM is completely omplicit in what is happening today. They are conducting "Information Operations" on us as if we were the enemy…
I also agree, I hear FAR more discontent. I was cranked up about politics in 2000, 2004, and in 2008, but people like my wife are REALLY cranked up for the first time, and she is a tough cookie, woe betide the fool who crosses her… I just discovered Big Gov & Big H'wood last late last year, and signed up for intense debate the end of October. I am seeing new folks here daily, and they have good stuff to say.
Overall I am hopeful (real hope, not Oba-Mao Hopium )
our 'Sex in the City' girlfriends are no longer obsessing about Manolo Blahniks but are getting snapped in on handguns.
On their own. Without our guidance.
That certainly indicates something…
Another good "leading edge" indicator.
I don't really run with anyone in that crowd, most of my crowd was already "pro heat"…
I am encouraged sir. Thanks!
WTH is a Manholo Blanknic?
Manolo Blahnik's are shoes…
Insanely expensive shoes. One could outfit an entire kit for a month for what one pair cost.
Being single you either date single (psycho) moms or overindulged career girls.
Who buy very expensive stuff…
Thank God I'm happily Married…
But I have three daughters and I'm on the hook for Horses ASAP, so…
But I also have a brunette, 2 blondes and a redhead and they ALL Love me so I ain't complaining…
Thank God I'm Happily Married…
I know…
Back in 1987 I was Happily Divorced too!
good for you…
Beats happily divorced, but not by THAT much…
