Headline writing has always been an art. From my earliest days as print newsman, finding the right words to tell a story and fit the allotted space was a routine challenge that often sparked some of the liveliest debates in the newsroom. Sometimes hilarious, often passionate, headline writing has been and remains a distinct and important craft.
So how does one adequately explain this March 16 item from the CNN website politics page?
Health care foes have 200 no votes in House
Or this March 4 item from the Miami Herald website?
Health care opponents target Utah judgeship in latest salvo
Let’s see a show of hands: How many health care foes do we have out there today?

Okay, let’s rephrase the question. All you “health-care opponents” say “aye.”
If the headline writers were trying desperately to find the words to fit a predetermined space on a page of paper one might be permitted a little slack for writing such a stupid headline but this is the Internet – no such space constraints. There’s plenty of room for accuracy and truth.
Fact is, nobody opposes health care. Near as I can tell, everybody is pretty much in favor of health care. Ask around and let me know what you find out.

The media know this but for reasons unknown, some choose to use headlines — the biggest and boldest of news communication vehicles — to flatly and falsely state that there are foes and opponents of health care. Mind you this isn’t a simple inference — it’s a flat out assertion. And it’s an utterly preposterous lie.
The lie, of course, is designed to impugn members of Congress who are opposed to efforts to significantly expand government control of the health care industry and how its services are delivered to patients. I know some people involved in that debate and I can assure you that none is opposed to health care. In fact, they’re rather in favor of health care. They are, however, deeply opposed to efforts to bring the heavy hand of government into a health care system that, while imperfect, does a pretty good job of taking care of sick and injured people.

Journalistic shorthand is one of the greatest banes in news today but it’s even worse when it graduates from the body copy into the headline. It would be silly if the stakes weren’t so high.

If there was any real leadership in the GOP and/or if the GOP was really opposed to this (other than half-heatedly posturing about it) then they could stop it. Imagine if Steele would wake up and earn his salary – he would be out there coordinating with all the new GOP likely winners campaigning on how the new flock will just vote to overturn whatever gets passed, IF it does. This would likely cause the measure to fail AND increase the GOP victory. So, why isn't he?
This tidbit from Rep Steve King (R-IA)…
Most egregiously, this bill is not even constitutional. Unbeknownst to Nancy Pelosi, the Congressional Budget Office weighed in on an individual mandate to buy health insurance in 1994. CBO stated:
"A mandate requiring all individuals to purchase health insurance would be an unprecedented form of federal action. The government has never required people to buy any good or service as a condition of lawful residence in the United States. An individual mandate would have two features that, in combination, would make it unique. First, it would impose a duty on individuals as members of society. Second, it would require people to purchase a specific service that would be heavily regulated by the federal government."
While i cringe at the attention grabbing pap that appears in all our media nowadays, i think you have to admit that reading these in context allows you to see that "Health care foes" specifically refers to the "ObamaCare foes".
This won't help dismal ratings nor get anybody to read the newspaper. Downsizing remains the only option.
the minion class in the State Controlled Media is in BIG trouble…
Folk are getting really angry with being lied to on a daily basis, or being fed propaganda disguised as truth. This is going to reach critical mass in short order.
And we wouldn't want to be any of these purveyors of purile puffery…
This demonstrates what I have believed since I graduated from j-school. Every one of us got the same degree, no matter the quality of our work. When I went to work for a big news co, I learned that I was right, a lot of them weren't too sharp.
here is the deal.if you as a congressman vote for this crap plan through the Slaughter solution knowing full well that it violates the constitution and your oath of office; We The People will demand your removal from office and arrest. If you commit this act of treason against us you might as well get ready for at the very minimum life in a max security(no country club prisons this time)federal prison. And your Dear Leaders can count on Death. 75%+ percent of the US population will demand it.After that it is McCarthy style witch hunt time…anyone who has ever run as a dem will face our wrath….same for those who want to keep their hopey changey bumperstickers…WE THE PEOPLE HAVE HAD ENOUGH!!! NO SHORT TERM MEMORY THIS TIME!!! JUST THE DISBANDING OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY!!!
……….exactly. The drunk that was thrown out of class you call your attorney, and the real bad drunk who couldn't drive, you call him Mr. Senator………
"Constitution Foes Have 222 Yes Votes in House"
"Constituiton Opponents Target American Liberty in Latest Blitz"
There. Fixed those headlines for ya.
Because he's a f__king idiot.
And I'm not saying that because I'm racist, I'm saying that because he is a f__king idiot.
jake it is pathetic that you have to make sure you state that your NOT a racists….. but it is TRUE…
Headlines sell papers and you know that almost ALL of the print media is BIASED now anyway… I have NOT read a paper in almost 2 years… I get all of my news ONLINE and well, NO I do not pay for it!!!!!
thanks BREITBART!!!
If it were just the "Bad Headlines." These bad headlines always have bad propagandistic intentions. Why is the MSM waging a war of disinformation against the American People? On every level? Economically, politically, and pseudo-ecologically, corruptingly supportive of the massive scam of global warming. This systemic propaganda is constantly being fed to us as the "truth." It is only Orwellian misspeak on every level. Freedom of the Press? The freedom to Lie? The freedom to distort? The freedom to propagandadize? I thought Freedom of the Press meant the freedom to tell the truth.
So how does one adequately explain this March 16 item from the CNN website politics page?
By realizing that the CNN websire politics page is really nothing more than a left-wing blog.
It's a free country. If anyone has a great idea on how to improve health care they should gather like minded people, pool their resources, and go do it. But tell me why you need to pass a law to force people against their will and I will tell you why I oppose it.
Good to know I'm not alone. My only choice is the Bend "Bull"etin.
God save the Republic.

It's simple: 50% percent of all college graduates graduated in the bottom half of their class.
Statistics! Ya gotta love 'em.
"Constitutional Crisis"
There is a headline that tells it exactly the way it is.
Exactly as I have been pointing out to my liberal friends. I don't oppose health care reforms, i oppose health care reforms that will affect me. My health care is just fine and doesn't need to be fixed. Fix the broke form of health care. and this liberal lie of "you won't go bankrupt with this new system" are they saying I won't have any "out-of-pocket" expenses. How can that be? If that's so, then this whole reform idea will be bankrupt in it's first year and what then? None of us with any sort of insurance coverage? Not well thought out regardless of the 2000 worthless sheets of paper it's written on!
What do you call a lawyer who graduates at th bottom of his class?
Your Honor.
Like the old joke about the guy who graduates at the bottom of his medical class: " What do you call him?"
"Doctor"
Obama is through.
HEALTH, BEGINS WITH THE SOUL, NOT THE BODY……..PERIOD!!!!!!!!! Life on earth is limited, ask anybody who has had their "Over the hill" birthday!!!! Everyone is born and everyone will die (Pass on) (Depending on your belief)!! Birthday candles and cakes are always bought or made when the next date is apparently inevitable ( A day or two in advance), even with that precaution, even with the best of care, the birthday boys/girls new birth begins while the Cake/candle buyers morn the party that was planed to celebrate the mortal birth of the one who is now just toxic waste that must be buried or burned (Disposed of)!!!! Funeral arrangements are in need, many can't afford to bury or burn their loved ones…………Can the government set up a program to help them, it is a major problem in America, disposing of the cast off bodies is expensive!!! Where does it end? It doesn't, unless you are "Spiritually healthy" (The type of health they seek to destroy)!!!!!
I agree. I'm not too upset about calling us "health care foes". Of course that's not accurate, but until he went on to explain why he didn't like the headline I didn't even pick up that the phrase equated opposing the health care overhaul is opposing "health care" in total. Nobody reads it that way – it's the same thing as the "pro-choice" "pro-life" "anti-choice" "anti-life" titles in the abortion debate. Troubling sure, but it says more about the person saying the terms than about the people he is describing.
only racist would claim to not be a racist when making a comment about something that doesn't pertain to race.
That is sofa-king-re-tar-dead…
Michael Steele is black. Anyone who says anything negative about him is automatically open to hyperbolical charges of racism.
Just talking about bad headlines in general; I mostly just skip them because 9 times out of 10 a bad headline means a bad or uninteresting story.. Sometimes, like your headline, something is kryptic but intriguing, and I fall for it. Fortunately your story was worth the read. You have pointed out just one issue of media bias, of which there are plenty. Even I find myself falling into the trap and thinking for a second I'm "anti health reform" when I'm totally pro health reform, but just not as defined by the left.
Many of my friends complain about how far to the right Fox news and Drudge are, and at times I agree. Yet even though some of these friends are highly educated they totally fail to see any bias to the left in other media, and when they do they simply dismiss it.
The majority of MSM journalists and comedian editorialists at MSNBC are just one dog poop short of a pile!
Yeah, like the Gee-Bus-azz troll claiming that only a racist would comment that he isn't a racist when commenting on someone of another race. The sofa-king troll Gee-Bus-azz is an idiot!
The problem with the liberal / progressive news papers is that everything is so slanted that a person has to read down to the fourth or fifth paragraph from the end before you get the real news.
Folks, please keep in mind that we already spend millions in tax money helping the uninsured get health care. Mainly for the people who wait until they have an emergency, then show up staggering and broke at the emergency room. We all get to pay full price for it!
So their surgery will cost $50,000 while an insurance company would pay out maybe $5,000 and it still counts as paid in full. That's the part of the system that is broken. "Yes ma'am, here are you $1,000 pills. And for you…$10. And I'll take another $50 from your magic bank and call it even."

NPR news on Tuesday afternoon ended their story about the march in Washington opposing Obama's Folly with this gem:
"No reports of any arrests yet." Sometimes it's the end of the report that is the most telling.
Actually, the latest data indicates that the uninsured account for about 13% of emergency room costs–about the same proportion as the percentage of uninsured individuals. The biggest culprit in emergency room costs comes from seniors on Medicare–who are charged nothing for emergency room visits.
Thus the irony: the factor most affecting the rising costs of providing healthcare is from the government-controlled elements already in place. Mandated Medicare cost caps force health care providers to pass on unmet costs to insurance companies, who pass them on to policyholders.
The real fix will be to lighten, not tighten the grip of government on ou healthcare system.
No leftist would EVER! think to call this "healthcare bill" by its real name; Insurance Takeover.
You should be upset, as people ARE affected by headlines like these. The journa-liars writing this stuff know exactly what they are doing and exactly what its affect will be on the reader. It does work and it has been working.
Now that made me smile. Or at least have an evil looking smirk.
How could we read ANY slanted paper……
I'm sure this all began to come together after you cracked the second bottle of vodka.
Willy, excellent and concise commentary.
