President Obama this week announced that his administration would ease-up on the long moratorium on offshore drilling for oil and natural gas. Congress may not have made up its collective mind on the issue but some in the American media have made their positions clear. Observe if you will this headline from the April 1 edition of the Miami Herald:
Obama offshore drilling plan spares South Florida
Here’s a parallel line from a story on the website of KEYT-TV in Santa Barbara, California:
It looks as if California’s coastline was spared, as President Obama announced plans for renewed efforts of offshore oil exploration.
Without getting into the relative merits of the president’s proposal, my question is, from what exactly are these two states being spared? It’s not as if ExxonMobil is planning to plop oil derricks along the strip in South Beach or adjacent to the millionaire mansions of Santa Barbara. But what about the pristine scenery in these areas?

The drilling would not be permitted any closer than 125 miles from any shoreline, which is well into international waters. In fact, nobody would ever see the drilling platforms. A person of average height can only see about three miles into the horizon and even folks in the tallest luxury hotels have a vista that extends maybe 25 or 30 miles tops. No, wrecking the view isn’t something that folks are being spared from.
Perhaps the media are pleased that Florida and California have been spared from offshore drilling oil spills. Not likely. American oil platforms haven’t spilled a drop of oil in more than 40 years. So maybe these media pronouncements of sparing geographic locales from drilling is nothing more than a parochial NIMBY principle in play, a happy reminder that any new drilling will not be in my backyard.
That’s cool. But one thing these area will most certainly be spared is new job creation. Opening up American coastal waters for drilling could create more than 76,000 new jobs – pretty good ones too. The salary for entry level grunts runs around the low $30k range which won’t make a guy rich but getting three weeks vacation for every two weeks on the rig is one helluva compensation plan.
Then there’s sparing all Americans – even the common folk residing in the flyover country between South Beach and Santa Barbara – from the prospect of energy independence. Consider US oil production v. imports. During the last week of March, domestic oil production totaled 5,489,000 barrels while imported oil for the same week amounted to 14,234,000 barrels – more than two-and-a-half times the amount extracted from American sources.

Where does this imported oil come from? Among the top five nations providing oil to the U.S. – about 71% of all crude oil imports – are such hospitable locales as Venezuela and Saudi Arabia. I take some comfort in knowing that Canada supplies the biggest chunk of our imported oil (even though they did beat us for the Olympic gold medal in hockey. Hosers…) But it’s hard to understand how any serious person interested in energy independence can sleep well at night knowing that more than 1.5 million barrels of imported oil each day is controlled by Marxist lunatic Hugo Chavez down in Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, a diplomatic ally but also a well-known source of funding for anti-American terrorism.

Sparing Florida or California or anywhere else from offshore drilling will also spare us from lower energy costs. The law of supply and demand tells us that more oil results in lower prices. While opponents will argue that offshore drilling won’t do a thing to lower energy costs, there are plenty of folks – including some congressional Democrats – who seem to think otherwise.
Rather than news coverage heralding how one area or another will be “spared “ from offshore drilling, I’d rather see coverage on how offshore drilling can spare us all from the problems caused by surrendering American energy independence.

Perhaps these are now BANANAs. Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything. Do oil companies need permission from ANYBODY to drill 125 miles off shore. This territory belongs to NO ONE. Rare cases where the limit claimed is waaaay out there. I think Cuba's territorial limits include Miami harbor, and the Keys in Fl.
DO YOU REALLY EXPECT HONESTY FROM A DEMOCRAT?
A Democrat sells his vote (Stupak), has an extramarital affair (Clinton), cheats on his taxes (Rangle), accepts bribes (Murtha RIP), sells a Senate seat (Jackson), backs underage sex-trafficking (Cleaver), lives with a pimp (Frank), lies about racism (Carnahan), and on and on and on…
THEY ARE DEMOCRATS and IT IS EXPECTED OF THEM! They have no morals, there is no God, praise homosexuals, be politically correct, kill your baby, tax global warming, embrace illegals, bigger government is the answer to everything. The most corrupt Democrat is the most exalted.

One of the funnier comments made during the 2008 Presidential campaign was when Nancy Pelosi said that she thought we should use more natural gas because it's not a fossil fuel.
Actually, the US claims up to 200 miles offshore as its territorial waters.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't oil seep out of fissures and beraks in the ocean floor?
Will Obama walk out on to the ocean, smack it with his staff ansd demand that the oil stay under the sea floor?
She is a certified MORON. She's worth about $10 million personally. I know her hubby is filthy rich, I wonder how Nan accumulated that kind of $$$? Not with raw brain power.
"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has directed nearly $100,000 from her political action committee to her husband's real estate and investment firm over the past decade, a practice of paying a spouse with political donations that she supported banning last year. "

Thank goodness for Barack Obama! Without his wonderful administration I just know I would be wasting my money on mindless frivolities. The democrats' commonsense approach to managing my assets is such a relief. Now I can just sit back and stare at the wall … because that's all I can afford to do. Isn't it great?!
Expect Obama to "correct" that, as he works hard to reduce our "imperialistic designs on the world."
As a kid growing up in So. Cal., we used to find plenty of oil and tar on the beaches BEFORE they started drilling offshore. As you indicate above, petroleum seeps are indeed natural occurring phenomena. In fact, looking for natural seepage was one of the early techniques used to locate oil reserves.
It's not fair that you have an entire blank wall to stare at while poor people have to share walls. You should be forced to share that blank wall with others. You don't support income disparity, do you?
Good one mousie!
For a second, I was sayin'; "What the hell…?" and then I read it further, good punch line too!!
100% correct about seepage!
If you recall about two years ago off of the California coast they had tar balls washing up and they spent weeks looking for an oil company to blame but when all was said and done it was an open fissure along an undersea fault line…
They ASSUMED the culprit was "big oil" when in fact it was that EVIL nature thingy…
Ya, I've heard that forever. We fiddle and the damn Red Chinese and Rooskies are drilling for oil in the Western Hemsiphere, who will Miami blame when the Chinese screw someting up of the Cuban coast?
I misspelled breaks as "beraks" – that's close to Barack….omen?
I'm sure they fired off a stern letter of admonishment to Gaia huh?
Are "warmer lefties" & co. celebrating Al Gore today? Does Al Gore celebrate himself? I bet he went for a jet ride today and he laughs all the way to the bank…and restricts media to his "speeches".
The left are morons. They know nothing about business nor the energy sector. Offshore technology is the most advanced industry in the world, and it is totally dominated by the US. I invite anyone interested to check out such companies as FMC Technologies, Transocean, Diamond Offshore, Weatherford, Cameron Industries, Baker Hughes, Schlumberger and many others, or to take a close look at the overall business climate in Houston where all of these companies are based. Houston, Texas is the ANTI-DETROIT, and the Marxists like Obama hate that fact!
[ Eli's Hammer ] The oil you saw was from ships that had broken previously and floated for years sometimes; just like glass balls (the green glass things the Japanese used to use to hold up their nets in Japan) floated in off the Jp. current etc. decades later. Notice that you say "used to see all over the beaches?"
Seepage would still be on the beaches–rarely is that seen today. I used to get it all over my clothes and then all over my grandma's house.
We definitely need to open all areas for oil exploration. This can be done without harming the environment.
http://www.PoliticalCentrist.com News and views for independent voters
[ Eli's Hammer ] I get a kick out of 'common sense' people and groups not figuring out one tiny thing. (well two)
(1) That if we drill all of our oil, we cannot store it. SO–we (big oil) will SELL it overseas…China, etc. It won't really change anything here, except we will use up our oil reserves.
(2) The rest of the world will continue to use petroleum at an ever increasing rate…and if we don't drill it it will still BE THERE so WE the "People" can exploit it for OUR (not the world's) use when everybody else is OUT. Now that, is thinking about our grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
(a) drilling way out…is like when we moved our jurisdiction to the 200 mile..from 12 mile limits to protect our commercial fishing industries from the Japanese processor ships and their fleets.
(b) Way out right now, in certain areas, can be exploited by other countries using offset drills—so we have to beat them at their own game there.
(Notice:: That no where do I say "don't drill in New York or Nebraska; Atlanta or Alaska…for all the natural gas you want. Zillions of cubic feet of the stuff–pretty clean–and also creates jobs.
LaBrea tar pits anyone?
Only states which voted against Obama in the last election, e.g., Virginia will have oil exploration along its coast. It's warning for November. Remember, he's keeping score. Do I think he's that petty. You betcha.
The enviros are trading a phantom, "monster in the closet" problem for a real problem. But they don't care. Like the old parable of the frog and the scorpion, when the scorpion stings the frog and they both sink and drown, the frog asks, "Why?" The scorpion responds, "Because it is my nature."

Interesting comments and article. Thought I would pass along some info from our own domestic resources. US Geological Survey records show we have more reserves than the rest of the world put together, onshore!, see link:http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=1911. Why did I have to get this from an email? Why is it being ignored?

"Notice that you say "used to see all over the beaches…"
I don't live in So. Cal. anymore, that's why I said that.
I believe that a lot of the oil in reserves near the surface along the So Cal coastal area has been pumped already, that's why we don't see as much as we used to.
Consider what has transpired a the La Brea Pits in terms of seepage. In the 50s and 60s, the parking lot for the exhibit and the office building next door (5757 Wilshire Blvd) used to experience tar seeps. The city and property owners removed tar and vented the gas plumes so that the tar rarely bubbles up through the surrounding areas.
The only thing the Left knows about business is that they can tax it and try to regulate it in order to perform social engineering.
Drill ANWR.
Now.
You're right, Spanky2. As a young kid running through the waves on California beaches — too many years ago to mention — I always had to have the tar scrubbed off my feet with either turpentine or gasoline before I could come in the house. There were no oil rigs out there drilling for oil then. It was messy, but it was a fact of life.
I remember my folks driving on a back road in California and looking at the oil and tar seeping out of the ground and forming oil pools and tar pits. Gosh, maybe I should have looked around the hills a bit harder to see if I could find a ship beached at least 10 to 15 miles from shore. That would have been something.
These people are not stupid, but deliberate. You are confusing an absolute lack of integrity in the pursuit of power with stupidity (well…) . They aren't morons, they think we are, so they say whatever furthers their agenda even (gasp) if it makes them sound dumb or is a lie. Ted Kennedy was a master at that. He would say any ridiculous claim if it made his legislation sound good. Listen to her speech patterns. The very tone of her voice is deliberate and condescending. Not morons, they think the rest of us are.

Not a stupid woman, a corrupt, craft woman.
At least they aren't lining us up along that blank wall…ready…aim…
I am saying this everywhere I can because words mean things. We must stop labeling them morons or stupid. They are…but it goes deeper. They are deliberately doing these things to achieve their goals. They have the idea that a big central govt is a good thing and they are grabbing as much of our individual freedoms as they can because they expect that no politician will roll it back. Thus, the big central govt rolls on…over us. They are clever, smart, passionate, determined, convinced we are not as smart as they and they have the stick right now.
I want to know, if they are so much smarter than we, how did they buy this big central govt hooey which has failed or is failing everywhere?
I am laughing! I thought you said, "Do I think he is pretty?"
*mutter* Me and my big mouth.
Thanks. Some days all you can do is make a joke.
What Mr. Obama did was not open up new areas to drilling but restrict areas once onpened by Congress in 2008. Politicians of all stripes alwaysbtwists the facts to support themselves. I have worked almost my entire life in support of Offshore Drilling and Production as a R.O.V. Supervisor/Pilot/Tech. The amount of misinformation that the general public has about the oilfield is staggering.
We work very hard 12 hour days, when we are lucky, and get paid pretty well for it. We also have very pro-active measures to make sure that no spill of any kind takes place. Sure it was not always that way but it has been thatt way for at least 35 years.
US offshore reserve estimate is 50Gbbl. Montana Bakken reserve estimate is 4Gbbl. Texas 1Gbbl. Venezuela is up to 500Gbbl. I say use th e Neutron bomb now (or assassination, political corruption) and keep pumping from South America to be able to drive our Cadillacs around.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_reserves :
Sadad al-Huseini, former head of exploration and production at Saudi Aramco, estimates 300 Gbbl (48×10^9 m3) of the world’s 1,200 Gbbl (190×10^9 m3) of proved reserves should be recategorized as speculative resources, though he did not specify which countries had inflated their reserves.[22] Dr. Ali Samsam Bakhtiari, a former senior expert of the National Iranian Oil Company, has estimated that Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have overstated reserves by a combined 320–390bn barrels, and "As for Iran, the usually accepted official 132 billion barrels (2.10×1010 m3) is almost one hundred billion over any realistic assay".
So, from the above, say the world's proven reserves are 1000Gbbl. if world will be using about 0.1Gbbl/day, then we have 10,000 days of oil (at increasing prices) available or 27 years of use, before we convert to solar / wind / fission / fusion. Hope our grandchildren will be ready.

Higher prices on oil from restrictions on domestic development, Fleet EPA standards increase moved up by Obama, and an agenda against CO2 emissions are all linked to this administrations push to control our choices and ruin our free market society. Also don't forget the abuse of the executive order to steal the millions of acres of land from the states to be made into "National Monuments" so no drilling can be done on those lands.Isn't it disgusting how we are being pushed into their desired standards through this constant manipulation and lack of any process that has checks and balances? If you have a family larger than 3 or 4 people total, need to haul hay, horses or whatever, you will be out of luck shortly. We will be mandated to drive little electric golf carts that don't allow us to live our lives with the freedom of choice and the pursuit of happiness. We will do well to become good little COMRADES and do as we are told. BIG BROTHER will take care of us. Fight back against this any way you can. We need to take back our country from these elitist Utopian socialists. If we don't speak up now and vote for freedom in November then soon all will be lost.
Chickens taking a long time to come home to roost on this one…….I figure when gas hits $5.00 a gallon there will be enough pressure to drill off our shores……until then we are going to have to listen to the Dems and the Greenies drone on about climate change, CO2 emissions, land preservations, and the greening of America. Wow, what a load of garbage!

What the hell are you saying? These two statements contradict each other.
Obama considers oil shortages and high prices a positive thing…it will reduce the demand for energy, shrink the use of fossil fuels, and improve(in his mind) the environment. That "want" is the want of the Obama government, and to him and his ilk, the purpose of an economy is to provide the things needed, wanted and desired by the benevolent Government, not to produce the things needed, wanted and desired by the people.
"We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times….That’s not leadership. That’s not going to happen"
By "We" he means you. And he was serious.
I figure when gas hits $5.00 a gallon there will be enough pressure to drill off our shores.
Unfortunately, here is what will happen when gas hits $5/gallon:
Which is why they have to thrown out ASAP — first November 2010 — then November 2012.

Forgot one. Where do you place republicans going to a Hollywood bondage club?
Energy Independence?
I know it makes good partisan politics, but do you really believe there is such a thing? We use 20,000,000 barrels of oil PER day. Drilling off all our coast line will not support 20,000,000 barrels of oil PER day
Even if this is true, which it clearly is not – there's more than enough oil on the west coast alone to make us close to energy independant if pursued aggressively enough, why wouldn't you try to reduce the amount of that oil we have to import? Unless the goal is to make us more dependent on foreign energy sources. Because the fact is, that for the forseeable future we will be using oil as our chief source of energy. We even have the anti-nuke idiots over here on the northeast who are trying to close one of our plants, that supply a third of New York City's energy. That's terrific – the only possible replacement is coal. Tree hugging lunatics..
You have to remember that OBAMA is the guy who said he wouldn't ban coal fired plants, just make them impossible to open – like the nuclear plants that he allegedly supports. The critical part of the comment from Scott is that it is from the MSM – the mainstream media is the problem – all else is secondary. AFTER 70 YEARS OF AGGRESSIVELY CHANGING THE CULTURE FOR THE WORST WHY DO CONSERVATIVES CONTINUE TO PATRONIZE THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA?
Conservatives, who make up 60% of the population, have to say ENOUGH to the elitists that make up the mainstream media. Why does talk radio keep referring to their stupid comments – who cares? – why give jerks like Keith Obermann free publicity? Talk radio may be a mouthpiece for conservatives but we have to be smarter – let's simply AVOID and IGNORE the mainstream media. Without the 60% of American conservatives, it will wither away. We have news, we need entertainment. So AVOID the poison that comes from the MSM!
Gee, during Clinton's impeachment, "it's only about sex" was the mantra? Now minor piccadilloes are big deals.
News flash: whatever the truth or lies about the list above, none of it was paid for by us tax payers.
Not exactly. 12 miles is territorial waters, effectively US "soil." 200 miles is the 'economic zone', which means we claim the minerals and fish there but not the sea-lanes etc.
"before we convert to solar / wind / fission / fusion"
Of which only fission actually exists.
Liberals are control freaks. That's all it is. They are the nosey-parkers who can't resist telling everybody else how to live their lives.
Right.
We have NO IDEA how much oil is out there. The last surveys on the US shelf were done 30+ years ago with primitive 70s technology, before the Greenies shut down exploration. How much oil lies under ANWR? Nobody has a clue, becuse we haven't been allowed to look.
New discoveries happen all the time- off Brazil, off Greenland, off Venezuela, in the Gulf. There are more proven reserves in the ground today than in 1970- *despite* the Club o'Rome morons' prediction that it would all be gone by 2000.
Maybe some, but he got cremated in Alaska and oil exploration got closed down more up here.
To drill at 125 miles out, one either needs a seamount to mount to accommodate a conventional drilling rig to, or one must drill using a floating rig that is anchored to the bottom.
If storms come up that break off the rig. there is a valve that is located on the bottom on the well head, that is supposed to shut down the well when the rig breaks loose. Supposed to is the operative term.
Second issue, the cause of the infamous Santa Barbara oil spill was failure to case the well with pipe deep enough to avoid the issues of drilling in fractured anticlines. Essentially oil bearing rock layers that create bumps/folds that trap oil and gas that migrates to form a pool in the bump/fold. The uncased well blew out through a crack in the anticline. It took many days to secure the heaviest drilling mud to inject into the well to seal it off, cracks and all.
When drilling in deep water, casing a well becomes a difficult process, and certainly the ability to pump drilling mud into a blow out is further complicated.
With abundant oil in more accessible shallow water formations (note slant drilling can now reach approx. 8 miles offshore) , it makes no sense to exploit the more costly and potentially more dangerous deep water leases, unless your goal is to create the appearance of access. Note: environmental challenges and uncertainty over the cost of cap and trade will delay any leasing, moreover the same uncertainties and delays will affect the cost curves used to bid on the leases. That will insure that the leases will go out at below the FMV that could have been achieved without said tax, delay, and litigation costs.
Democrats/ Leftists want to increase the cost of fuel in the US in order to force the lower/zero income crowd to need federal assistance to pay for the fuel. CO2 has nothing to do with it.
You just made my point.
The Democrats' approach is "Fire, Ready, Aim!"
I'll chime in too. I grew up in Santa Barbara and, as a frequenot surfer, knew all about the seepage. I would often come out of the water and need gasoline to get the "tar" off of my skin or trunks. I'm now 50, but my father, who is now in his 80's, told me that same was true when he was a kid, long before drilling there started.
Spanish missionaries reported oil seepage along the CA coast, long before ships used oil for power.
Maybe he figured out that if we don't drill for it China will and we will have to buy it from them. All he really wants though is his Cap-and-Tax bill passed and then he will write a new executive order canceling the drilling.
This is only exploration. There isn't a chinaman's (pun intended) chance of drilling.
There will be NO drilling !! If I was an oil exploration company, I wouldn't bite. There are two options that will happen. The first is that all money will be spent over a three year period and then the policy gets changed, will no drilling allowed. Or secondly, all the money will be spent and then Obamao will take over the oil industry. After all that is what Maxine Waters said is a goal of the Progressives.
?
"Only states which voted against Obama in the last election, e.g., Virginia will have oil exploration along its coast."
Alaska voted against him, and we will not have any oil exploration.
Good. More money for Red States.
There are a ZILLION reasons to oust the Democrats from every political office in the land.
If we couple off-shore oil, use technology to advance the development of oil-shale extraction, and commit to develop nuclear power, while we work towards uncovering the next big revolution in energy related sciences (hydrogen IMHO), we could easily develop a mid-term and long-term plan to greatly reduce our dependence on foreign oil. We would get a job boom, economic expanision and a greatly reduced trade deficit.
The only thing stopping us: Democrats.

And oh!…as a fanatical fisherman/scuba-diver I almost forgot to mention this trivial detail: the oil production platforms off Louisiana’s coast also produce 80 percent of the oil and 72 percent of the natural gas produced in the U.S.—and without causing a single major oil spill in half a century of this process. This record stands despite dozens of hurricanes – including the two most destructive in North American history, Camille and Katrina – repeatedly battering the drilling and production structures.
I do hope it works
