Democrats regained control of Congress in 2006 in part by talking endlessly about the Republican “Culture of Corruption,” a meme the mainstream media and the liberal blogosphere were only too happy to pick up and run with to the point that it became engrained in the culture; a Google search brings up 16,300,000 results for the phrase (after filtering out references to “Malkin”and thus Michelle’s new book “Culture of Corruption: Obama and His Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks, and Cronies”).
The original phrase was supposedly fed to journalists and bloggers by Howard Dean in the summer of 2005 as he tried to drive allegations of Karl Rove’s involvement in the alleged outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame, and he regurgitated it later in the year while talking about accusations of irregular stock trading involving Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. But the meme really took hold after Nancy Pelosi repeated it the following September in response to the indictment of then House Majority Leader Tom DeLay on ethics charges.

What do the Rove, Frist and DeLay cases have in common? None of the three has ever been tried, let alone convicted of any wrongdoing. But therein lies the beauty of a meme: it’s just an idea. It doesn’t have to have any basis in fact. It doesn’t have to be true. It doesn’t have to mean anything. It just has to be created, and then be picked up by commentators and pundits and repeated by rote until it takes on a life of its own; memes are self-replicating.
The origins of the word lie in the Greek mɪmetɪsmos, meaning “something imitated.” Thus, for the ‘culture of corruption’ meme to take hold in the media in 2005 and 2006, no scrutiny of the accuracy or veracity of Democrat claims was required; reporters and anchors didn’t even have to ask, or even understand, what the phrase referred to. It was, linguistically speaking, a self-referent (compared to “Culture of Corruption,” “‘Bush lied, people died” was positively polysemous).
Sounds easy doesn’t it? Just wind up your meme and off it goes. I came up with a little meme of my own this afternoon, while watching the breaking news concerning an ethics investigation of Democrat representative Maxine Waters. This on top of Charlie Rangel, and Rod Blagojevich… All during what the Obama administration is laughably calling the “Summer of Recovery” (a slogan that hasn’t achieved meme status; it’s more of an unintentional trope).
Anyway, it all came together… A “Summer of Recovery” twist on “Culture of Corruption…”‘Summer of Corruption!” Brilliant! Alas, when I Googled the phrase I found that I’d been beaten to the punch: 6,580,000 times, according to the search results. ”Summer of Corruption” was the subtitle of a Stephen King novella entitled Apt Pupil published in 1992, and also the name of a 2008 tour by Massachusetts metalcore band “Hell Within.” After refining my search I still came up with 3,000,000 results, and on a cursory observation of the first few pages most of them seemed to be referring to Charlie Rangel and also referenced Michelle Malkin. It turns out that the phrase was first used by her in a June 2 blog post about the Blagojevich trial and the Joe Sestak pay-not-to-play allegations, and as further Democrat shenanigans have come to light, “Summer of Corruption” has become a recurring segment on her site.
I haven’t visited Michelle’s site for a few months, but still, why hadn’t I heard the phrase before? I’m an avid consumer of Fox News, talk radio and numerous conservative and libertarian blogs and websites, and I subscribe to numerous email alerts and newsletters. One would think that at least one of them would have picked up on Michelle’s brilliantly simple slogan. As we’ve seen recently with JournoList, the left are certainly not averse to collaborating on getting their message out; on the contrary, they are rigidly disciplined in doing so. Long before Andrew Breitbart and the Daily Caller came up with the hard evidence, anyone who had heard one of Rush Limbaugh’s montages of multiple media personalities parroting the same liberal talking point would have already known only too well the extent of the collusion that was afoot. But, whether it’s the innately individualistic and competitive nature of conservatism, or simply the fact that those of us on the right actually have our own original thoughts, lock-step messaging is just not something that’s in our playbook, much as the left would like to believe otherwise (How’s “Right Wing noise machine” for an inherently meaningless, classically self-referential gem of a meme?)

Obviously the mainstream media aren’t going to give any airtime to Michelle’s catchy conservative slogan, lest it have the same impact on the Democrats in November that “Culture of Corruption” did on Republicans four years ago. And in any case, much as part of me would like to see the idea of a ‘Summer of Corruption’ take hold across the media, I adhere to the (Groucho) Marxian principle of not wanting to belong to any club that will accept people like me as a member. We don’t want to rely on the mainstream media to get our talking points about Democrat corruption out to the voters, and we shouldn’t need to; the facts of each individual case are damning enough to speak for themselves. Let’s just wait for Blagojevich, Rangel and the others to be convicted. I’d like to see the media try to avoid covering that.

… but it's not a summer of corruption, it's a century and more of corruption and it's likely to go on for many more centuries unless we find a way to stop it and soon.
I wish it was just the summer of corruption! It's more like the most corrupt congress ever! The most evil congress ever! The most socialist congress ever! etc.
Exactly, we're going to be back here complaining about the new Republican majority in a very short period of time because we're still expecting "superheroes" to be elected and fix our problems for us.
The emphasis needs to be on ideas like establishing an eCongress to relocate US Congress back to our Local Districts to securely telecommute for 75% of their terms to increase voter access and reduce lobbyist influence.
After all, the US Constitution allows for it and this was even proposed to US Congress on September 14th, 2001 as a highly recommended national security upgrade that they obviously ignored. http://econgressnow.com
The Media will not cover anything that would put their favorable bias toward Marxists, Progressives, Socialists, Communists, and Democrats in question or in a bad light. That inevitably would leave their pages blank if not for the propaganda, fiction, and lies they print each and every day. To the Media, facts, news, and truth are what they say it is and anyone that may disagree is a racist sexist homophobe that watches the not a news organization Fox or listens to the radical right wing luns on talk radio. How do I know this to be true…the NYT, WaPo, and Politico tell me, as well as show me, each and every article they print and the lamestream media spews it each and every day for all to see and recognize if not a practitioner of the same ilk.
The mainstream media is nothing more than the Democrats modern rendition of the Klan. Their job is to scare people, lie and obfuscate.
JournOlistas one and all.
I'm waiting impatiently for "The Fall of the Fall."
That many incumbents will fall is probably a given. My hope is that more liberals than conservatives fall.
I for one am willing to go back in time to when there were no safety nets created by government. A time when government was so limited by lack of funding that the level of corruption was "manageable". A time that did not require 100 million dollars to be elected to a job that pays $400,000.
These days the only people in government with Honor AND Power are in the Military. What will our future hold?
Yes, it's a catchy phrase but we all know the corruption in Washington has been going on a lot longer than one summer. I'd like to think that Washington isn't more corrupt than it has ever been, it's just that we're finding out about it more.
I credit sites like this and a population that has really started to wake up to what is really going on. We've known the MSM have been asleep at the wheel for decades and then we wake up one morning and there's a marxist in the Whitehouse…how the hell did that happen?
So we've taken it upon ourselves to learn, reason, investigate, and watch what's happening in politics like never before in our history – of course we're going to find more corruption, its inevitable, and more to the point – its about time.
This only goes to show you, you have to get up pretty early in the morning to get ahead of Michelle (and Andrew). As to getting the message out, billboards do a great job. All you need is about 20 of them dotted across the country, changed every two weeks or so but, with the same headline or meme, if you will. The MSM falls victim to this every time. "Who is putting up these billboards? Tonight at eleven!" The message getsout there and they don't even realize they are promoting it. Silly, twisted, braindead trolls that they are.
Socialism is collapsing in Europe. If it's so great, how come places like Chicago aren't socialist Utopias by now, instead of a rotting cesspools of bullying and corruption?
Adam Smith was right and Karl Marx was just a passive aggressive version of Atilla the Hun.
.
A little off topic and referring back to the jounolists, I read this article about the "media" connection with George Soros and Obama. Excellent artictle and if it was posted here before I apologize. (Hard to remember hundreds of articles)

Damned right-wing noise machine, always after me lucky charms
"If he raises taxes and throws up tariff walls and opens the coffers of the DNC to bribe-money from the special interest groups against whom he has (somewhat disingenuously) railed during the campaign trail, then he will almost certainly reap a whirlwind that will make Katrina look like a balmy summer zephyr." (that a fact?)
…It may not fit on a bumper sticker–but I kinda like it
The "Summer of Neo-Tammany Hall Democrat Corruption" will give way to the "Autum of Lies and Desperation"

Let me see-Charlie the RangHo, Aunt Esthers uglier sister Mad Maxine Watters. William the refigerator Jefferson, Disgusting Harry Greed, Piglosi and her hubby, Findslime and hers-"summer ocorruption"-how about LIFETIME OF CORRUPTION. BTW Disgusting Harry-Why is your son running for governor of Nevada and afraid to use his last name ? You idiot commies could turn a gold mine into a toxic waste dump.
When the GOP runs Congress we must drain the swamp, when the Dems run things we must preserve the wetlands ecosystem!
Correct-Tarpon-far more than the 400 or so listed on JournOlist. Id say 90% of the sports media and probably80% or so of the rest of the media and academics are not only left, but VERY far left-Bill Ayers and Ward Churchill are the NORM in most academic circles(Ayers was named Chicago "mao of the year "in 1997 for christs sake-tell me the media didnt know of his Weather Underground days.)
The reason that the "Summer of Corruption" doesn't play with me is that corruption is besides the point. The whole Marxian ideology of the Democrats, their lies, power-grabbing, rampant spending, it is so beyond "corruption" in the normal sense it's not even funny. These people are traitors as far as I'm concerned. I suggest "Summer of Treason" is more accurate.
Responding to the author's comment about Googling a term and discovering it already had a full life: I can't tell you how many times I thought I came up with a novel expression only to learn somebody/lots of people beat me to it. I've gotten to the point where I just assume any phrase I construct is unoriginal. Well, maybe "medallions of aboriginal halibut" might prove the exception. I'd better check.
Well, in Nov let's institute a new phrase, fall of the corrupt.
It's all right there waiting for us. They have walked away from "recovery summer!" and gone on to "blame bush". We can completely destroy them at the ballot box by simply stating the obvious – they had conceded their policies are a complete failure and the Obama/Pelosi version of communistic socialism has failed – just as it always fails. It failed for Mao, it failed for Stalin, it failed for Hitler and it failed for Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam and Castro in Cuba. They now have resorted to trying to hide from their failures by hoping to campaign not on the promised record of achievement that was their recovery summer centerpiece, but to hold a popularity contest pitting themselves against a guy who isn't even running – George Bush."
It doesn't get better than this. The best damage you can do to a political opponent is to use their own words against them. Remember how they used 'Mission Accomplished" against the Republicans and Jack Abramoff? In politics it is all about making you destroy yourself and not having to go after you.
This is the key and the opportunity to use it to end their rule and end a whole lot more. An end to Pelosi? An end to race card politics? An end to liberalism for generations? An end to Waxman and Frank and Levin and the whole lot of them? It's all right there. Message discipline, speeches, advertisements will get the ball rolling and the Democrats will spend the rest of the election cycle tearing each other apart.
Man, this has to be the biggest wounded buffalo on the prairie I ever saw.
Which apex political predator will eat it? The Republican lion? The Tea Party wolves?
The least known, most hoped for meme is the guy,in a long trench coat, during summer 1969 at JPL,handing out mylar flags and a purple print mimeograph stating the moon landings were produced at a stage in Neveada.Several journos and engineers recall this guy.Sounds like some kind of counter-intel as we had a republican president.
"We are fast approaching the state of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the state of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force." –Ayn Rand

Great ! Now all you need is 10 thousand Right Wing journalists shilling for you, good luck with that. HhHAhaaa
I call it bumper sticker logic where Democrats can only use slaogans which can fit on a bumper sticker, which is about as deeply as their constituents can think of anything.
I'll second that motion, LiO. Government budgets acrosse the nation – Federal, state, city and local – should be slapped with a 50% permanent haircut. Our problems would nearly be solved.
Who wants to bet that with 1/2 the budget, there will only be 1/2 the corruption?
Government is inherently corrupt. Less government = less corruption. And the smaller the government, the larger the citizen.
Dems or Repubs (Dem Lite) are the same. Two words:
TERM LIMITS
Time spent on the Hill contaminates people into corruption.
Tea Party
The two word answer to term limits we can't otherwise have.
No worries. Information is a good thing when we talk about those two plotting.
Because socialism isn't sustainable policy; it is a criminal conspiracy that focuses around a best-case scenario of being ruled by a benign dictatorship. Obama is seeking this benign dictatorship outcome and that is why he is taking over all these industries. The outcome isn't important, just channeling the treasury to fellow liberal-progressives.
Socialism at the top and socialism at the bottom with crony capitalism for us in the middle.
