In the past year, we’ve had plenty of opportunities (and reasons) to criticize Jon Stewart’s routine attacks on conservatives, talk radio, Fox News and other opponents of reflexive liberalism.
But not today.
| The Daily Show With Jon Stewart | Mon – Thurs 11p / 10c | |||
| South Park Death Threats | ||||
|
||||
Put in the difficult position to address his network’s controversial decision to censor a “South Park” episode that mocked Islamic extremists, he deftly put the network’s decision in context, back-handedly criticized it but summed it up with an adroit, “But hey, they write the checks.”
Then Jon Stewart performs a spectacular pivot reminiscent of Wes Unseld in his prime and focuses his rage exactly where it should be: on the animals who used their unhinged interpretation of Islam to threaten the lives of Stewart’s colleagues, Trey Parker and Matt Stone. He goes on to show highlights of how The Daily Show has targeted all religions from the Amish to the Jews, from Methodists to Wiccans.
Backed by a gospel choir, he sums up this celebration of free speech and true tolerance with a musical message “to anyone threatening death in the name of religion or politics” with the pithy and resonant lyrics: “Go F*ck Yourself!”
Today, Jon Stewart is my hero. He should be a hero to every weak-kneed, lily-livered, cowardly member of the American media, from the reporters who meekly submit to arbitrary authority to the jellyfish executives who cower in their Sixth Avenue towers over threats from guys living in some cave or Brooklyn basement.
And he should be yours too.

I daresay that calls for a chorus!
Go f*ck yourself,
Go f*ck yourself,
Go f*ck yourself…
He's hardly a hero in my book. He might have a spine, but no hero.
It was good. I'll be truly happy when 'artists' who ridicule and insult Christians and Jews are no longer called "brave". What a misuse that is of a very important word.
But, yes, it is so nice to see Stewart using his considerable talent to actually take on the forces of censorship and intimidation instead of shoring them up.
Humorous cartoon athttp://drawfortruth.wordpress.com/category/politi... on how speaking the truth about Islam back in 2001 got Franklin Graham "dis-invited" from this year's Pentagon National Day of Prayer service.
So much for "freedom of speech" if you're afraid to say anything!
Well done Stewart! kudos on the statement that these people are our enemies. I'm glad he made the distinction between debate and what is, in reality, a war. And from someone who appreciates his humor, if not his politics, that's f'ing funny.
Uhhh… he made fun of every religion EXCEPT Islam.
He made fun of the New York guys… but did NOT target Islam itself… he barely mentioned it, and then softballed the Islamic guy, and let his "unease" really go unchallenged.
Was it…. yesterday? that I was reading a piece beating up on Jon Steward for being a dishonest satirist and at the point it was a compelling argument. All the evidence to date seemed to really support the argument and it was very hard to find defense for Jon.
I have now seen the defense. Some might say that he soft-balled Islam in the delivery but the delivery he made assured that it would be aired without censorship and it opened the door for others to follow and push the envelope wider.
While I don't watch Jon and I don't alway agree with Jon — I find my self applauding today to see a honest (what might be called fair and balanced some where else) approach to satire this week.
Well done sir.
leibowitz has never been funny, perhaps if he had on a minstrel suite and a pointed0polka dot hat,,,
Message to Comedy Central executives. Please fire Matt and Trey. Cancel South Park immediately. PLEASE.
And then I will have absolutely ZERO reasons to watch your network. Censorship is the greatest form of cowardice. You should be proud to present yourself as just another sell out. First Trapped In The Closet and now this.
Matt and Trey. Take South Park to a network that is worthy of my DVR. I'll even promise to sit through the commercials. Or better yet. PAY PER VIEW!
For some real comedy relief check out George Carlin.

It was a weak and self-serving denouncement, at best.
That's not deft.
It's chicken shit.
Whatever your politics? Dude. When someone blatantly fosters political lies I don't have to "give" anything. Yes he is funny. But he still bends over from time to time from political pressure. That is why I stopped watching.
Matt and Trey don't. That is why I still watch. Brutal honesty is something we had better start acknowledging before we share a place in the history books with dinosaurs.
This is the longest I think I have watched Jon Stewart in a long time
Of all the liberal commentators out there, Stuart is probably the one with whom I have the least problem.
Well done, Jon. Well done.

Romeo13, you need to go through the montage, there are bits on Islam. Not to mention Aasiv Mandvi's whole bit. But if you're looking for him to just attack the entire religion of islam, you're missing his point.
Stewart's as liberal as they come, but when it comes to blatant intolerance and injustice he does call 'em like he sees 'em. Remember the bit he did mocking ACORN after their fraud was exposed, or when he mocked the pro Harry Reid supporters who were throwing eggs.
I'm sorry, Larry, but that "unhinged interpretation of Islam" actually IS Islam. It is what Muhammad preached, practiced, and enforced. Or, well, he sent others to do the enforcing, at least.

And give the guy credit where credit's due. He really is funny.
Stewart is the consummate idiot insider, but occassionally he does get it right, and leads the pack.
Think back to last fall when Breitbart broke the Okeefe/Giles ACORN story. Other than FOX, there was dead silence on the part of the MSM; then on about day four, Jon Stewart was the first one outside FOX to "report" on the story.
He always has his finger in the wind, checking for ratings…………
If you want to save yourself some time, 8:30 – 9:20… basically the only portion of this video worth watching. Actually, the part near the beginning about them living in the shadows of the world trade center was also good.
Other than than, I absolutely cannot stand this guy. I find his humor absolutely unbearable – it's like listening to a second grader make poop jokes. Those clips listed above are probably the only ones I've ever heard where it seems like this guy may have some sort of brain. Every other time, he's either extremely vitriolic or has that little "I'm so funny, I really crack myself up" smirk on his face that makes me want to chokeslam him.
Actually a couple of the clips in the montage were about islam. I'm not saying he's turned a corner and everyone should applaud him as a true satirist, but give him a little credit.
Hmmm… just rewatched… one comment on "I am an American Moslam", and one Pigskin joke..
Yep, thats really taking it to one of the largest relgions in the world… when they do an entire segment on Christianity, and another on Jews…
And the Mandvi's bit? Really really weak…
The point was "supposed" to be that they attack all relgions… and yet they did NOT include Islam…
I think the point he was making ( that some of you may have missed ) was that he has lapooned every religion on Earth, or at least in the U.S. , and has not recieved any death threats. Islam is the religion of cowards. The reason it has not flourished in the U.S. is because of our well armed citizenery. Let some Muhammadan try to reap revenge on me and he will understand that Mr. Colt made all men equal. By the way, ( just for my own amusement ) I challenge any Muslim coward to attemt any retribution for my post. Childish? Maybe so. See you at high noon pig fu@#er!!
Now the islamic COWARDS will probably threaten John Stewart. If muslims can "rail" against chriatians and jews, then christians and jews can "rail" against them. THE TIME OF TAKING SHIT FROM THE ISLAMIC WORLD IS OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
National Lampoon, South Park, and Red Eye, he's not. For Stewart, is this a step in the right direction ? Maybe. We'll see.
When he mocks Islam as vigorously as he does other religions, I'll give him some credit.
If he really wanted to stand up to Islamic extremists, he would make his own cartoon of Mohammed and display it on his show. In fact, every American should make a cartoon of Mohammed and put it on their door. Hell, they want to kill us anyway, right ? I'll start here.

Looks like a rabbit. "(smack, smack, smack) Yeahh.. wot's up Achmed ?
Stewart is the kind of Liberal who truly deserves the title. Not like those assclowns on MSNBS and the Communist News Network who scream about the "danger" of the Tea Party while ignoring real violence perpetrated by leftards.
Stewart is brutally critical of both parties, and doesn't let Democrats off the hook when they do stupid sh!t.
Stewart sums it up perfectly with his gospel finale.
For him that was good. Maybe he will get a few death threats too.
The problem, Glory, is that radical Muslims intend to destroy and conquer Western civilization (including the U.S.) from within by immigrating and procreating until there are too many of them to equalize with a Colt. For instance, there are now over 85 madrassahs (Islamic schools) throughout our country which are set up as “charter schools” and funded by the U.S. taxpayer. These schools promote “education jihad” by radicalizing students to promote a universal caliphate. And that's only one example. Another . . . the British . . . . They are overhwhelmed with Muslims–many of them radicals. Late last year I read in the Times online that their Muslim population has grown by more than 500,000 to 2.4 million in just four years and is rising ten times faster than the rest of society. How are we going to stop that from happening in the U.S.?
The men and women in our armed services arew the real heros. Jon Stewart loves social ideology and the european style of gov't as much as Obama does.
First off, get the Imam in Chief out of the White House, second keep at the TEA Party to encourage REAL patriots and conservatives to vote for other REAL conservatives and run for public office, and third is to protect the Second and Tenth amendments at all cost. And if all that fails I'll just buy more cartridges for my Colt .50 calibur.
"All because of how much we, in this country, value and protect their freedom of expression."
Funny how liberals are happy to protect radical muslim's freedom of expression, but will not tolerate moderate and conservative freedom of expression. Such is the hypocrisy of the liberal Communist ideology.
even a broken clock is right twice a day
I don't trust any National Socialist named Leibowitz. Especially when they try to hide their German heritage by selecting a classical British surname. Oy Vey, Jonathan, Oy vey!
Good for Stewart. Still, libs like Stewart are concrete thinkers only. They can't deal with the abstract. Therefore, he's a free speech warrior for one of his own but I doubt he'd go out on a limb for everyone's free speech.
What's the saying about a stopped clock…?
I really think Red Eye should make some serious Islamic jokes and take over where Comedy Central won’t go. Actually, I think it would be cool if an artist did a “Life of Mo-ha-mud” portraits in cartoon slapstick poses. Liberals are cowards by not including Islam in their anti-religious ravings.
Where are the moderate Muslim groups denouncing their extremist members? Why is it left to a comedian to stand up with courage against the murdering cowards? What kind of religion encourages killing innocent people just to make a point? And believe it, when nobody speaks out, that is encouragement.
Not fair. When the Reid supporters were throwing eggs, he called them on it. When the world (minus fox) was ignoring ACORN, he played it and highlighted the media's silence. Stewart's as liberal as they come, but when the choices are clear-cut, as they were today, he did the right thing.
Bullshit.
my thoughts exactly.
in a sphere of cowards, he was a little less cowardly.
kudos, I guess?
So what you're saying is "when it's really easy to see the truth, at least he admits it." ??
Not sure that cuts the mustard.
Better than others, sure.
The message Comedy Central is sending is unfortunately very clear: If you don't like what we say, threaten violence against us and we will shut up. This is a very bad message to send.
yeah, perfect op to portray his own pix of mo, but he didn't.
And Stewart continues to prove a broken watch can stll be right twice a day.
Visit Dearborn Michigan and then tell me that Islam is not flourishing here.
I'm voting they pull a truly innovative move and launch their own South Park channel streaming over the internet. I would pay for that even though I don't like the show that much. They would make more money than anything.

Wow! Boy you showed em. You care so much, you are so enlightened. It is hard to imagine the goons who made the threats ,real threats, aren't sitting in shame and regret after that verbal lashing you just doled out to them.
These goons basically reprogramed the show imposing not only on the creators rights, but all of our rights. We all just took it up the ass by the radical islamists and all we seem to want to do is get together on what a swell guy jon stewrt is.
NOT ME! There is nothing this shameless bastard coward can say to take the sting out of what just happened.
These are the same people that never stop cutting people who are patriotic down. They said the war was lost, they want us to believe there is no war . Probably because they don't want to believe it. These are the people who call patriots sexist names and wield their claim to superiority like a club. These are the people who cloud our vision when it is so important to be clear of mind.
Have no doubt, this was a successful terrorist attack. All this whore jokester and his coward network can offer is scorn for patriots and victories for tyrants.
So let me get this straight……even when he says something positive, you aren't happy? Theres no pleasing some people.
no the point is that you shouldn't buckle to religious threats – because it just legitimizes thuggary. The specific type of religion is immaterial.
Good for him.
bravo to this site and writers such as Larry O'conner who have the foresight and the honesty to actually compliment a guy like john stewart when he actually deserves it.
There are too many liberals and conservatives who just side with people because of their affiliation and not their content – its the intellectual equivlant of giving people a free pass to abuse. I'm glad that there are some writers on Bigworld who don't follow this trend – Its why im left-center but still come here.
You're right. He threaded the needle very carefully. Brave? I dont think so.
give it a rest man. He did something good ~ you're allowed to compliment him for the one isolated incident alone even if you dont agree with his politics…really, they won't revoke your conservative cred's for doing it.
well to be fair its not an investigative journalism show, he's said before that his role is to point out the absurdity of the political system and that is essentially pointing out really easy to see truth that is being ignored.
eloquent.
Well, gosh, I'm just SO pleased that, even though he sings that song to people on my side, that he doesn't quite mean it in the same way. Yes. That really warms my heart. He's still a very nasty man.
Bravo for Stewart, who has potential but is still a tool for the writers. I hope he wont be threatened. Whatever happened to the ethic of "I may not like what you say, but I will defend your right to say it" ;0)
Stewart had two choices here — address the issue, with its obvious freedom on speech issues and the equally-obvious room for parody, or duck out entirely, and then have to listen to people on the right go after you for not having the huevous to go after anything but easy targets, when your fellow Comedy Central show creators actually are willing to challenge people who threaten to kill them.
Jon did what he needed to do to maintain his credibility, far more than, say, your average MSNBC show host who thinks standing up to Fox News is the ultimate in liberal truth-telling (and I support, to go along with Stewart's back-handed criticism of Comedy Central, a back-handed compliment to the channel for at least allowing this segment to air and not pulling an MSNBC and permitting no on-air criticism at all of their own network's actions).
If only Jon Stewart could wrap his mind around this very simple reality: If the government can ignore the constitution's protections of personal liberties and limited governmental powers in the name of healthcare and other progressive goals, how in the hell does he excpect the 1st Ammendment to matter anymore? The constitution is either the law of the land or it is not.
I know the issue at hand is Islamic death threats, but I'm actually more worried about government intrusion into speech than I am corporate cowardice in the face of threats…
South Park is so good that I would "pay" to see it should they choose another venue to allow for freedom from censorship. I really hope this episode doesn't move Matt and Trey towards ending it altogether. I hope it continues a good long while.
How about a "Big Satire" cable network from Breitbart and Co? Excellent home for Southpark . With SEIU goons on his tail, these pesky Islamofascists would be less than gnats to Andrew! I'll subscribe!
Little Johnny painted himself into a corner and had to dare I say stand up to someone other than FOX News. This group that sent the "threats" is based in New York City and i can't believe it is made to fell comfortable there. Thanks to the genuflecter-in-chief bowing to everyone he sees like a fraidy-cat what can we expect?
All of these LIBERALS talk so much trash to Conservatives but they are so afraid of anyone else.
Most people believe he changed his name not to hide it, but because he and his father are estranged.
Since you believe you have the knowledge to say that "his view is incorrect 99% of the time" does that imply you are an avid viewer; you watch the show 100% of the time so you can find the 1% when he is correct and create this statistic?
the real problem here is that Muslims claim they are offended not when someone intentionally tries to belittle or denigrate their faith, but when someone doesn't follow the tenets of Koranic law.
In other words, follow our religion or you are offending us.
Congratulate Bernie Goldberg not Jon Stewart. Bernie shamed him into fairness if indeed he was.
This is further proof that the Tea Party people are not violent. The left wing MSM uses hateful slurs against the Tea Party and then say that they are bunch of white terrorists. It's an obvious lie, because when they are actually confronted by violence the MSM folds like a lawn chair in a hurricane. If the left wing media really thought the Tea Party was full of violent extremist terrorists they would do as comedy central did and they would grab their blankies and suck on their thumbs.
Breaking News: Today local liberal dimwit richardporter, while attempting to spread a layer of manure over a comment thread at Big Journalism, stumbled and fell face-first into his own handiwork, once again failing miserably and making a complete fool of himself. Said Vincent von Quul: "It couldn't have happened to a bigger azzhole."
Stewart is a liberal moron. Okay, so he blasts islamofascists; but even a blind squirrel occasionally finds an acorn. Stewart has nothing to say that interests me.
I'd like to see that. If they do, I'd back Mr. Stewart up if necessary. It'd be interesting to see if he would finally see the threat to the world that militant Muslims are. And then, would he continue to stand tall, or knuckle under?
I see numerous posts giving Mr. Stewart kudos here – today. That's OK. Most, if not all past articles that are about Jon Stewart point out his blatant shilling for the left. On the rare occasion (such as this) when he speaks out for what is truly right, he does so reluctantly. It's as if his legion of writers agonize over how they can address the issue and still maintain his (and their) hipness and leftylib street cred. He has and will continue to shoot at conservatives with an elephant gun, and at liberals with a pea shooter. No balance to that, and for that I will continue to not support him or give him credit for a (rare) job (reluctantly and not well) done.

a cursing chorus line is reluctant?
no it implies he likes to call people douches
He had to put a lot of qualifiers out there before he broke into the chorus. Not quite sure who he was saying it to – it was like he lumped ANY religious group that would threaten anybody else – not just specifically Muslims – before he had his chorus belt out the tunage. And that was the extent – even when he was going over his laundry list of religions he's "poked fun at", there was only a brief mention of Islam. Because I don't watch it, I wouldn't know of any other statements he's made for that particular religion but I think that its a pretty safe bet that there haven't been many, if any. The ones he showed for all the other faiths, particularly RC, were only a small percentage of his scorn over the years. That I can say because of the articles posted here about him. So yeah – I stand by my original comment.

" was like he lumped ANY religious group that would threaten anybody else – not just specifically Muslims"
That was exactly the point, any religious group that does that is in the wrong and can go ____ themselves. the muslims arent unique in using their religion as an excuse to act like thugs, so why make it just about them.
hes a bit too selective, Colonel West has a spine, actually talking about the true Islam in public. Stewart is only taking the middle ground.

No Romeo you are still missing the point.
These extremeists have threatened lives for a statement that had been made about their religion. The use of footage from previous shows was to hilight that all religions receive comment and criticism.
The point of this entire segment was to hilight the REACTION of the fanatics in question, not to make comment their religion on this occasion.
Last time I checked the dollar wasn't doing so hot against the Euro – maybe those crazy Europeans are on to something.
I agree. I wish this comedy show would deliver more hard hitting news stories and focus more on accurately reporting both sides of the issue instead of making jokes all the time.
Where do they get off?
"kudos on the statement that these people are our enemies."
Yes, it sounded like that to me at first, too, GorditoSarcástico. What he actually said, of course, was radically different. Indeed, it was the whole point of his argument.
