As media elites in their Sixth Avenue towers look down and tut-tut about those racist reactionaries in Arizona, the real people who have to deal with the real-world problems and ramifications of leftist open border political correctness are not backing down.
This weekend on Phoenix’ KFYI, radio host Terry Gilberg interviewed Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu. The Sheriff’s message to Contessa, Katie and all the rest? Come ride along side me in the patrol car. You’ll see the real story.
During the interview, he conveyed a remarkable statistic:
Last month alone, just in one patrol region, we had sixty-four pursuits. That means people who were driving a vehicle, failed to yield, took off like a bat out of hell, running red lights, creating traffic wrecks, numerous people were killed in these wrecks over the last several months, and who are these people? Not one of them was a U.S. citizen.
How can the debate over the Arizona law be conducted by the holier-than-thou East Coast liberals who don’t deal with the consequences of their positions without at least hearing the facts from a man like Sheriff Babeu? While they focus on Steve Nash and his oh-so-valiant choice of jersey, they ignore men like this who literally put their lives on the line every day due to the open border policies our friends in the media promote.
Do they dare paint this man as a racist? In the good Sheriff’s own words:
I don’t profile… I profile criminals.

The left do not care about this statistic. They do not care about any of them other than the one that shows if legalized they will vote democrat. That is the only thing they care about. more voters and progressive rule.
Great job.
"I don’t profile… I profile criminals".
Love this quote.
I agree with the post above. The left do not care about this statistic. They do not let little things like "facts" get in the way of their agenda.
Those racist legal Arizona folks need to start driving faster in Pinal County otherwise it will look like they obey the law.

All these idiots who are so quick to cry about the "rights" of illegal immigrants should stop and think first about the rights of murdered ranchers and their families, kidnap victims, and other victims of violent crimes perpetrated by illegals. They should think about how illegals are fostering racism and hate crimes. They should think about how frustrated law-abiding citizens get when their governments do nothing to protect them. They should think about how consequence-free illegal immigration makes LEGAL immigrants feel.
THINKING… like poison to Progressivism.
If most Mexican immigrants vote Democrat, and most criminals vote Democrate, it's no wonder that the Democrat party would advocate for illegal Mexican immigrants – it's a win win situation for them, or will be, should they succeed with their immigration reform.
Keep up the great work Arizona.
Thank you Larry, This is a "new media" story… Classic example. Where others tow the talking point line and lose ratings, The real story is just a click away and the BIG sites swoop down like and eagle for another chunk of their audience. Will they ever learn?
I hope not.
Are we to conclude making them more fearful of being discovered without "letters of transit" will drive the numbers of chases etc. down, or up?
That means people who were driving a vehicle, failed to yield, took off like a bat out of hell, running red lights, creating traffic wrecks, numerous people were killed in these wrecks over the last several months, and who are these people? Not one of them was a U.S. citizen.
Hey, they're just doing the jobs American's refuse to do.
"Committing crimes Americans refuse to commit."
Let's hope that "contagion of courage" spreads out here to California, and the rest of the nation. We honestly need to say "screw you" to the federal government. Not in the constitution? Then you don't get to do it. End of story.
I am tired of casting the illegal immigrant problem as racial. “Mexican” is a nationality, not a race. If our southern neighbor happened to be Brazil, rather than Mexico, we would be talking about the illegal “Brazilian” immigration problem. If Portugal, then it would be a Portuguese problem. If France, then…oh wait. If France I would immigrate to Canada.
These are the Dems newest voters if Nancy has her way!
These heroes need our support. I am tired of Pols who cater to ILLEGAL ALIENS. Secure the border and force Mexico to deal with her internal problems once and for all. Shut the relief valve, no more bleeding off the pressure at the expense of American blood, treasure and rights.
i think the msm response would be, he has the darnest luck, 64 out of 64, he must just be a racist cop. if 64 chases happen in one month, you have problems, if you have 64 chases, and all of them are illegal's driving, you are in deep s**t. you need troops there, and a real border fence. what kind of jokes will obama say about this guy?
Liberal Logic would say that the fault goes to the police who need change their pursuit policy.
64 out of 64. The Left is going to say he can magically tell if the driver is an illegal and does not bother to chase anyone else.
Just watch.
'During the interview, he conveyed a remarkable statistic:

A patrol region is much smaller than the county, similar to a police precinct. So that is 64 chases one patrol region. I do not live in Pinal County so I do not know exactly the number or patrol regions but I'm told there are at least three. I believe the 64 chases represents a much smaller number than actually exists for the whole county.
The job of law enforcement has been complicated unnecessarily by misunderstandings and distortions of the Civil Rights Act, Title III and leaves every officer with the unenviable task of trying to apply his understanding of the law before taking action. While there is a need to apply the law in a uniform manner, the introduction of race as predicate factor in determining if or when reasonable suspicion and ultimately probable are warranted places undue burden on someone who now must factor in a 'bias' or prejudice before he can act pursuant to the law, as he understands it.
and this new law will end these pursuits how exactly?? It seems to me that if anything it will increase the problem if every illegal immigrant, not just the hard criminals, start running for cover on our streets and highways.
Someone out there deal with allot of antiques, particularly architectural antiques? I’m looking for a good resource other than ebay. I found the shop I linked above but never heard of the company.
Why do you even bother with that letters of transit crap? "Ooohhh look at me I made a pop-culture reference to 'Casablanca' and it's relevant to today because that movie has Nazi's in it and Arizona has Nazi's too!" And yet you ignore the fact that those high speed chases got people killed and that the "rights" of illegals were more important than the rights of the citizens who were caught up in harm's way. Your question is totally flawed with the whole numbers thing. You say we shouldn't put pressure on them because it'll just make things worse, but what is your solution to the problem? Don't worry I'll wait.

And once they do, they will be caught and deported. Problem solved.
i guess you don't understand plain english! if 64 out of 64 chases are all illegals running from the law, putting illegals on notice if seen, you are going to prison, or being deported, they will leave the area, hopefully go back home. if texas, new mexico, and california had any brains, they would pass the same law, then the federal government would be forced into doing the job they are supposed to. i guess you want us to look the other way at law breakers. lets just give them amnesty, along with bank robbers and rapists?
No — getting rid of them by rolling out the unwelcome mat will make them drive to Kalifornia. Pronto.
If they had a sign that said they were just on their way to San Francisco they'd let them go.
I'm sending this to DrudgeReport. There is likely no way that major newspapers will admit this incredible statistic and American citizens need to see it. I hope some of you will send it to Drudge also.
They don't chase them because they're illegals, they chase them because they broke the law and have to be caught before they run over other illegals.
There are too many people of the opinion that the illegal immigrant problem is not really a serious matter, but when one gives consideration to the absolute danger it brings, then perhaps they will begin to think differently, especially when we see our rights as legal citizens being trampled upon by illegal immigrants. A case in point is the recent school official that prohibited citizen students to wear shirts that hand the United States flag printed on them, while at the same time, the official said nothing nor did anything about those waving Mexican flags. This may seem a small matter, but these small matters become huge problems and corrode our rights as citizens and actually deprive us of our rights under the Constitution. Also, many of these illegals are very dangerous criminals, and they come here to rob, steal and kill others. We must to understand the illegals have no rights under the law as natural citizens have, about which they actually don't care. It has become far past time treating these immigrant violators as if they have the same rights as legal citizens. They need being promptly deported, and a second offense should call for very long incarceration of ten or more years on prison labor gangs. A third offense should earn a life sentence of incarceration. If the federal government will not enforce the law properly, then the states have the right to do so, and the punishment must be applied promptly and seriously to all illegal immigrant offenders. Every State in the United States of America has the right to establish and enforce laws against illegal immigrants, and to incarcerate such persons, after which, they may then turn them over to federal officials for deportation.
When will other border states have the guts to do something like Arizona? If the states don't "man up" soon, the tenth amendment may as well be extracted from the constitution.
Dandre, succinct and to the point, well said.
Exactly. To all you "brave" illegal immigrants who protest our laws: Real revolutionaries, real men and women of character and integrity stand up to what is unjust even when it's not easy to do so. Why don't those of you who flee Mexico start by protesting what is wrong with your own government – just like the Founders of my country did? That is the foundation of a country that others will find so inspiring that they will risk everything to become part of it.
It's easy to come to a free nation like mine and throw bottles and make speeches and rage with anger at our laws – Brave, intelligent citizens revolted against tyranny to guarantee the right to do those things. Why are you so cowardly that you cannot do the same with your own country? For you to abandon your own corrupt country and come here to protest in mine proves that you are nothing but cowards. It proves that you don't respect or deserve what it takes to be free.
Seems like it would be a lot cheaper to set up mine fields along the border. We can post signs letting people know the mine fields are there – but the signs will be in English.
Area you related to Pelosi or are you just stupid in your own right?
Hmmm…let me think…
Odds are this wasn't the first contact these particular suspects have had with law enforcement. Suppose, on those earlier encounters, the officers involved had checked their bona fides and discovered that they were in the country illegally? Those chases would never have happened, because the suspects would already have been either incarcerated or sent back over the border.
The new Arizona will be a very useful tool for getting the worst criminals off the streets and out of the country. Suppose the cops can't quite prove a suspect is involved in a kidnap ring. If they can prove that he's in the country illegally, they can still get him off of Arizona streets. It's the same principal as Al Capone and tax evasion.
The left has created another protected class here. Boush/Rove tried to out-bid them for votes. It didn't work. McCain did the same. It didn't work.
Amnesty has become an entitlement for latinos. Anything short of that is racism in their eyes.

After all the wailing and gnashing of teeth by anti-American, Liberal, Democrats, the new Arizona law is already starting to work. Maybe they were just going out for ice cream.
They're just running the red lights Americans refuse to run.
Fine and dandy! However, it seems to me that every single illegal, whether he/she is Mexican, Asian or Middle Eastern, constantly throws the race issue into our faces. Don't blame the American side entirely, the biggest racists are the illegals themselves.
Obama would say that the sheriff is "overreacting," and that the illegals are only trying to better themselves.
No! If the sheriff said "64," he meant "64."
Even Arizona's tiniest counties are larger than most eastern cities areawise. I used to live in Pinal County, and yes, this statistic is probably right on. We lived next to a secondary highway, and watched the police chase dozens of illegals daily. In fact, it was so bad, my daughter-in-law carried a rifle when she went to the bus stop (which was about a half-mile away because the bus wouldn't cross the county line from Gila County) to pick up the kids.
They have been running for nearly a century!
So what else is new?
It's not just stats Sub. It's facts in general that the left abhors. For the last 40 years we've been inundated with good feelings and wonderful intentions. Where has all that touchy feely crap gotten us? It's gotta stop. We're the only country on the face of the planet that will not enforce our own borders.
Anyone else see a parallel with the Roman Empire here?
Nope. Here's what we do.
1) Seal the border.
2) Round up all the illegals and deport them. They can be put on waiting lists for re-entry to this country legally.
2a) Keep track of every dime it costs to collect and deport these misguided folks.
3) Deduct the amount from 2a from the total amount we give to each of these countries in foreign aid.
4) Sit back and watch as the MEXICAN government takes care of the problem for us! They depend on that foreign aid! When that gravy train stops because of the actions of their own people they'll stop the flood themselves.
The worst part of trying to get the rest of the country to pay attention to the problems Arizona has with illegals is that there are far too many pollyanna types out there who only see the "plight" of the illegals' in their own country. Don't believe it! ALL of these jerks have homes–beautiful homes that were built, furnished and paid for with money from OUR jobs! I have seen illegal men and women send thousands of dollars back to Mexico or whereever, while I was trying to find work! It's obscene, actually. The powers that be claim these people are doing jobs Americans won't do, yet nearly all are union jobs! Explain that! Literally NONE of the illegals are bad off in their own country, but they will find any excuse to cross the border!
One evening I took one of my sons to the hospital in South Phoenix. He had been stabbed by his so-called "wife," and when we got to the ER, the place was full of illegals. They did their best to keep us from entering the hospital. Finally, a security guard came through, and stayed with us until the doctor finished with my son.
The illegals all kept weeping and wailing their "rights" were being compromised. The guard, a Hispanic himself, told them that my son had the right to be there, and if they didn't shut up they would be facing the INS.
Chases are not the problem! The problem is that there are a large number of people who's basic respect for the law has been cast aside. Exactly what do you think illegal is? Does this mean that we can all start to choose what laws we want to ignore? If that's the case I choose to ignore the law that says I have to pay taxes. Careful where you go here people. Some people will choose to ignore the law about physical assault. Ignoring a law weakens ALL laws.
Did you see the article on Newsmax about the U.S. actually rescuing Mexico from France in 1867? It's quite a story.
I think one thing in that situation that infuriated me was Roger Ebert's tweet to the world that "Kids who wear red, white and blue on Cinco de Mayo Day should sit at the same lunch table with the kids who wear shirts with the hammer and sickle!"
Why should we allow people like Ebert to have a paycheck?

Believe me. This sort of thing is what Arizona and other border states have faced for nearly one hundred years! NO help at all from the federal level, very little from some corners at the state level. As with the mayor of Phoenix, who would rather pander to the illegals, most of the federals who were asked for help, merely told the Arizonans to be nice to the illegals because they didn't have what the Arizonans had—that was right, they just wanted what the Arizonan's had such as their homes, their jobs, their cars, their wives-daughters-nieces, and whatever else they could put their dirty hands on. Some of the legislators who back the illegals are out-of-state newcomers who live in Arizona a year, and think they know everything! They have also been busily changing names around the state!
Skarue the feds. We will win and take our country back.
November 2010 the tide turns.
You notice the trucks all look like the same ones, which would give rise to the argument that the videos are doctored. I greatly doubt they were doctored, as people who have good sized, 4 x 4 trucks and even the 2 x 4s, can make a good living transporting illegals across the border.
You also notice the trucks are all late models, very nice vehicles. That alone shows there isn't as much poverty in Mexico as our government and the illegals want you to believe.
64 high speed chases in one month; just think about that for a moment. These chases have become so common place that even the local news rarely reports them any more. You can bet that it is 100% tied to drugs.

no, it's because they are illegal dummy! They are scared of being deported.
Meanwhile the sheriff in Pima County, the country that comprises Tucson and environs as well as sharing a large part of the border with Mexico has announced that he has no intention of enforcing the law:
TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) – Pima County's top lawman says he has no intention of enforcing Arizona's controversial crackdown on illegal immigration. Sheriff Clarence Dupnik calls SB 1070 "racist," "disgusting," and "unnecessary."
Speaking Tuesday morning with KGUN9's Steve Nunez, Dupnik made it clear that while he will not comply with the provisions of the new law, nor will he let illegal immigrants go free. "We're going to keep doing what we've been doing all along," Dupnik said. "We're going to stop and detain these people for the Border Patrol."
(yeah, that's been working real well so far)
The sheriff acknowledged that this course of action could get him hauled into court. SB 1070 allows citizens to sue any law enforcement official who doesn't comply with the law.

It is a card. Not papers. Not a file. A card. The size of a credit card.
BY LAW I have to carry it at all times.
Why oh why do some people think the legal immigrants should have id to show their status, but not the illegal ones.
——
I'm PROUD of my card and will show it to any law enforcement officer that requests my identification.
Too lazy to read all the comments; surely someone has already pointed out: According to Steyn there can be no sovereinty without control of the border. Not a power delegated to the states, because no one could conceive this responsibility being abdicated by the federal government. Founders anticipated vote-buying and instituted a republic to try to head it off, but I don't think they ever conceived the citizenry would let it slip the restraints and degenerate this far…
I think there is something in the water down there in Tucson. They produced this sheriff, Robert Sarver (Suns owner) and Steve Kerr, to mention a few. All they have is the Uof A and I think that is where the contamination originates. They drive too slow and suffer from a bad case of "Phoenix envy".
Violent criminals afraid of going to jail will be more likely to shoot officers if the officers attempt to arrest them, so just let them go, right, Dick? Same logic! Are we going to stop enforcing all laws that upset criminals?
The illegals are taking off because they are engaged in additional criminal activities!
Are you REALLY this clueless?
A Maricopa County Deputy, also a friend, told us that almost every arrest made in the southern part of Maricopa County is an illegal. That has to be a lot of arrests! Maricopa is a large county.
Carolyn2009 – thank you for that post! Welcome to America!
Dems want illegals in the country at election time so Pedro can vote as Mickey Mouse who was registered by Charlie Crack-head who was paid $5 per registration at numerous precincts by ACORN (soon to be renamed) with our tax money given to them by the dems/socialists/communists/Marxists we don't want ruining our country. They want to give imprisoned felons back their right to vote too.
And how many of those people would have stopped if they could get a guest worker permit. Immigration prohibition causes unintended consequences and each one of these highway chases could have been avoided.

Arizona spends 1.5 billion per year on illegals — this is personal. That's 1.5 billion that belongs to legal citizens, so what about their civil rights?
Tired of hearing about illegal civil rights — I don't get any when I go to another country illegally.
As a former resident of Tucson, I have to say that I am disappointed with the law enforcement officials who have spoken out against the law. Most of the ordinary citizens I know who still live there are very much in favor of the law.

No, having them stopped and deported for not having "letters of tranist" as you so smugly put it will drive down the numbers of chases. Less illegal immigrants equals less car chases involving illegals. The math is so simple even a "progressive" can understand it.
On another matter beloved of liberals, this is as good a reason as I've seen for not making up new gun laws.
