Last night saw the debut of Al Sharpton’s new show on NBC News’ cable outlet MSNBC. “Politics Nation” started with a monologue by the host delivered in his now familiar bumbling, bewildering and bombastic style. Though a couple sentences were not easy to understand, the over-all message was clear: The GOP candidates for president are like pre-1960’s racist segregationists.
Considering Sharpton’s entire career leading up to this point pretty much consists of him making loud accusations of “racist” through a bull horn, we shouldn’t be too surprised that the man MSNBC President Phil Griffin described as an “elder statesman” is going back to what he does best in this premiere show. Sharpton himself made it clear to the audience that this is what his show was going to be about. So we have a good year ahead of us leading up to election day with a nightly assault on conservatives by none other than the most successful race-baiting defamer available, Al Sharpton.
The beauty of the Al Sharpton hire is that it puts pressure on lefty TV critics to set their obvious affinity for his politics aside and actually give an honest critique of his television performance. I’ve been wondering for weeks if TV critics would run the risk of the inevitible accusation of “racism” in order to give their readers an honest assesment of Sharpton’s obviously inferior talent and abilities as a TV host.
It appears they are, in fact, willing to take that risk. Here’s the take from Ken Tucker at Entertainment Weekly:
The Rev. Al Sharpton premiered PoliticsNation on MSNBC Monday evening with an hour of booming bombast and near-obliviousness, as he steam-rolled over his guests, interrupting them to ask long, halting questions. At one point he acted as though he was having an argument with his teleprompter and said with exasperation to a guest, “Well, let me just ask you my way: Is the Tea Party going to destroy the Republican Party?”
But, of course, Tucker had to let his poitics get in the way of a full and honest criticism of Sharpton himself and instead blamed his producers for not letting Al be “Al”:
It was an awkward 60 minutes, with a lurching pace that failed to play to Sharpton’s strengths. He raised interesting issues — about new efforts at voter suppression, for example — only to lead aimless discussions of them.

If he can ever become comfortable on-camera and expand his horizons, Sharpton may eventually bring to MSNBC the combination of intellect and passion that has made so many of his press conferences over the years little wonders of argument, controversy, hype, entertainment, and enlightenment. Whether he’ll ever reach that point on PoliticsNation remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, at New York Magazine, the headline reads, “How Did Al Sharpton End Up With a Show on MSNBC?”:
Earlier, in a blustery opening segment, he was similarly rattled and unsteady as he tore through a case against Republican promises of restoring states’ rights. It was hard to follow as he shouted and pointed his pen at the camera, speaking passionately, but often in circles.
There has been quite a bit of controversy over the Sharpton hire and the work his community agitation group, National Action Network, has done for Comcast, the new owner of NBC. And MSNBC President Phil Griffin received the “Keepers of the Dream” award from the group earlier this year for doing so much to fulfil Martin Luther King’s vision for America. This was awarded while Griffin had a completely Caucasian line-up on his network.
Given teh raised eyebrows over the entanglement between Comcast/NBC and Sharpton’s controversial group, it’s surprising to see the blatant promotion of National Action Network on the well-trafficked pages of MSNBC. Take a look at the home page for the new Sharpton show. it has a highly prominent link right in the center that directs readers to the non-profit’s web site:
Sharpton finished his show with a message to the viewer explaining that he would not “be a robot reading from the teleprompter robotic-ally.” Then, for those who had still stuck around for the final minute of “Politics Nation”, Al Sharpton, NBC News’ newest star, danced.

The Liberals believe Al will aid them in fomenting the racism they are trying to recreate from the 60's. I'm not sure they ever took into consideration that Al is really, really dumb though.

I still think "Resist We Much" could do well as a half-hour sitcom, in maybe a 9 p.m. Monday slot. The "Al Sharpton" character on the show reminds me a lot of Ted Baxter from the Mary Tyler Moore show.

I think having Rev. Al on MSNBC is the best thing that could happen to Fox. People will tire of his race-baiting on every-single issue–he's a one-note charlie. If he seriously takes on the bearing of a Democratic "elder statesman" then that will be a humiliating blight on the Democrats. I know some Democrats who run "high-minded" blogs and publications (at least that's how THEY see it) that cannot be anything but embarrassed by Sharpton. I'm finding this predicament delicious!! If the leftist like a protest, why are we not going after Microsoft Corp since their name linked to NBC? Just because they provide both TV and internet support for posting their shows on line, I don't see why we can't hit back at Microsoft and let them know that we are not happy with the outcome. How much money does the deal between MS and NBC figure out to be? Time to start sending letters of discontent to MS. I am sure if they get enought, they will listen and talke to NBC about getting rid of some of the wambats that work the shows.
MSNBC hired this bigot to proof themselves against accusations of racism — by Sharpton and his minor league sidekick, Jesse Jackson pater. Hey Larry O'Connor, shouldn't this post be on Big Hollywood instead of here? While you are a journalist, the Reverend Al CLEARLY is not. He seems more interested in entertaining his viewers with a never-ending series of moments. All Al needs now is an Emmy nomination.
It is telling that the NAN is clearly mentioned in his network bio. I could understand if he was part of a group supporting computers for third-world children, or even a fringe group pushing for Latin to be required for high school graduation. Sharpton's group is extreme.

I always think of Tim Russert when NBC/MSNBC News Division makes a new hire. Russert wouldn't have allowed Sharpton to speak ad nauseum when he was being interviewed, let alone now, on Al's "own" show. This is a complete disgrace but that's where NBC/Comcast is right now. Wonder how they'll hide any coverage of Obama/Holder Fast & Furious mess at DOJ and ATF? It's quite obvious that the articles noted in this piece criticizing Sharpton's new show were all written by racists. In fact I'm so upset by them I think I'll march into the streets in protest. Anybody have a bullhorn I can borrow?

It's a wonder Al doesn't snap his neck and throw out his back with the way he constantly looks backward and tries to drag us 50 years into the past.

MSNBC will keep Sharpton on through next year's election cycle, because he's bombastic and they know that a certain percentage of people out there will watch just to see what the next outrageous thing he'll say. He is also the token African-American, which means they can use him to deflect criticism about how many of their on air personalities all seem to be the same race. However, its a double-edged sword–give him a microphone, and Sharpton will inevitably say something that will get him and his network into deep, deep trouble.
I'm guessing that we'll see him get suspended once or twice in the next year. His ratings will struggle, but go up a little bit as next year's election draws near. Then, after the election was over, they will plummet. Sometime around December '12 or January '13, Sharpton will either jump or be pushed off, and the slot will be open once more.
There's no surprise to me in what Sharpton's doing at MSNBC as he's been doing it for decades.
He is a cult leader and cult leaders are known for repletion, rambling and incoherent statements. Their cult follows are trained to only tune into certain words and phases that trigger their emotions, anger, fears and actions.
Glad my kids are young and this clown will be long gone before they even knew what the new Howdy-doody show was all about.

Well, at least you can say for his new employer that it was willing to accommodate his deficiencies with regard to intelligence. When it became abundantly clear that the reverend can't actually READ, they decided to "dumb it down" a bit so they could have an affirmative action lineup. If I remember correctly, MSNBC pundits complained incessantly that the Tea Party participants were raaaaacist, while avoiding the fact their own lineup lacked the diversity of other equal opportunity employers.
The reverend does a great disservice to any chance of credibility with that organization.
