As chronicled here over the past few weeks, the LA Times continues to hype the Occupy Rose Parade miscreants and its disgraced leader, convicted thief and wanna-be one-percenter, Peter Thottam. Another fluff piece appeared in its blog, describing the human powered “float” the Occupy Rose Parade bunch intend to shove in Americans’s living rooms at the end of the televised 123rd Rose Parade. The “float” consists of numerous plastic bags strung together and dubbed a corporate “octopus of greed.”

The AP’s single close-up photo used by the LA Times shows a paltry seven “Occupiers.” Contrast this to the many thousands of volunteers who have worked for months preparing floats and practicing with marching bands for the Rose Parade.
Let’s get this straight: The century old Rose Parade uses gazillions of living fresh natural flowers and all natural organic green materials to decorate floats built by thousands of volunteers, many of them children, and is paid for by voluntary private donations. To protest this supposedly evil symbol of corporate greed, the Occupods have rigged up a 70 by 40 foot “octopus” puppet made of plastic bags and manipulated by just a handful of puppet masters. Just think of George Soros with eight tentacles.
In short, the true Rose Parade volunteers hope to evoke happiness and joy among viewers, while the Occupy frauds hope to evoke class hatred and envy.
And what the LA Times conceals is the ugly irony of the Occupods’ plastic octopus. As of January 1, 2012, the plastic bag – the environmentalists’s equivalent of a cigarette – is outlawed in Los Angeles County retail stores. Yup, grocery stores (eeeevil corporations unfairly profiting from farmers’ efforts to feed the hungry) and pharmacies (eeeevil corporate drug pushers profiting from selling life-saving medicine) are now BANNED by government decree from giving away recyclable plastic bags to customers.
Even small mom and pop convenience stores, the 99% as it were, are banned from giving away plastic bags thanks to a fringe-influenced local government. Customers must now lug their own bags and boxes with them whenever they shop — welcome to 21st Century commerce forcefully bludgeoned with 18th Century inconvenience.
So really when it gets right down to it, the Occupy plastic bag octopus “float” more aptly represents the monstrous tentacles of government oppression of private enterprise and individual freedom. Happy Occupied New Year.

i hope others at the parade honor this "float" by wanting a piece of it, and tear it to shreads before it can be seen on camera. i don't seem to remember the media so giddy about putting any tea party events on live tv. i certainly don't remember them covering the preparations for any tea party gatherings. i seem to remember no cameras showing up, or them looking for the single racist that would show up, usually not a tea party member, but a nut case.
Big mistake to negotiate with these t3rrorist thugs.

Given the plastic bag ban, the questions are: will the protestors be fined for using plastic bags, will the merchant who gave them the plastic bags be jailed and will they recycle the bags when they are finished?

This is suicide for the Rose Parade. Although I have always found the parade tiresome and watch, at most, a few minutes, I am aware of the parade's hard earned reputation over many decades. If only 15-20% of viewers take offense at this decision by the parade's poo-bahs, ratings will drop, advertisers will then vanish, etc. Great job, guys!

San Francisco has banned plastic bags since 2007.

The Rose Bowl organization said NO to the float according to a local Pasadena citizen who posted this fact elsewhere.
They cannot stop the whackos and wing nuts like Occupy who follow after the parade. The evil is the media hyping a lie-the float is NOT a part of the parade. It is a teaching experience for parents to be responsible and tell children these are anarchists on exhibit along with complicit media hyping Obama's campaign workers.
I think the symbolism of an octopus for Occupy is notable(as opposed to the giant rat representing unions). Still hate calamari due to 20,000 Leagues under the Sea! It does represent the Democrat party and its agenda.

I watched the end of the Rose Parade and it just ended with the last official float and moved on. I didn't see that the actual Parade broadcast covered that part of it. I can only assume that the news tonight will show what wasn't shown during the official broadcast.
I wish I could have been there – I would have pelted the OWS morons with tomatoes.
NOTE on the plastic bags – my mom and I went to a Polish deli store in Santa Monica (it's the only one in the L.A. area that we know if) and were told they couldn't give out plastic bags. I commented on it and the lady behind the counter said that she's heard many complaints from her customers about the ban.
That kind of news does my heart good – there are still plenty of Americans out there that don't like the overreach of gov't, even about something as simple as plastic bags.

BTW, in the beginning when the Marine band came on scene, you could hear the swell of applause and whooping and hollering. And the Grand Marshal, Mr. Martinez, an Iraq War vet and winner of Dancing with the Stars, honored the troops very nicely.

IMPORTANT: The Rose Parade organizers were very much against Occupy being in the parade and told them "no" when they asked if they could be in it. Rose Parade did not cave at all. Occupy is not part of the parade, they are tagging along behind it. The Rose Parade is really fun and happy and i like it alot. Some of the floats are amazing. Occupy I do not like at all. They operate with a mob mentality and ruin things. I loathe Occupy with a passion.
Plastic bags are being banned all over the country because they cause massive, widespread disposal problems and end up depositing plastic contaminants into the food supply that your kids need to be free of microscopic plastic artifacts so they can remain healthy.
Simply research the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a distressing island of pollution that works its way into our food and water supply because plastic bags break down into smaller and smaller pieces which contaminate the oceans and waterways we rely on, causing birds, fish and microscopic subspecies to die out, causing a domino effect on the ecosystem.
The government is not over-reaching, in fact the government has been the biggest hindrance to getting plastic bags banned so people can reuse shopping bags and develop sensible habits. The retail lobbies have resisted these bans for years, putting profits above sustainable marine biology and both parties have acted as paid lackeys for giant retailers.
Susan Swift's headline is also misleading propaganda because in fact the exact opposite is true – all the network coverage of the Rose Parade neglected the Occupy float, cutting off broadcasts before it appeared. Because OWS is a massive, sustained, worldwide story and because the inclusion of the float has been so hotly debated over the last week, this was clearly a story that deserved to be covered, but was largely whitewashed. The LA Times was a rare exception of coverage, but news of the Octopus spread rapidly through the Occupt movement via social network and alternative media.
So the author is dead wrong on her premise and headline, and the editor here fails to direct contributors towards the easily checkable facts. I've never heard of Peter Thottam, but the author also misunderstands the Occupy movement if she thinks it has authorized any "leader" because the central idea is completely horizontal hierarchy with no one asserting power over anyone else. This was well publicized from the start.
