From Reuters:
NEW YORK (Adweek) – With double-digit ratings growth this season, Spanish-language broadcaster Univision is off to a better start than any of the major English-language networks, and the future is promising as well.
The new census is expected to show a nearly 45% increase in the number of Hispanic Americans since 2000, to a total of 50 million. This couples with continuing audience erosion at the major networks and Univision’s recent deal with Mexican programer Grupo Televisa, which locks up the source of much the network’s popular programing for at least another decade.
Just a few years ago, the notion of Univision catching and surpassing them would have had mainstream network executives rolling with laughter. They’re not laughing now.
And they’re not talking publicly about it either: When asked to comment, the Big Four nets refused. But a couple of executives talked on background and indicated that they take the threat from Univision seriously. (more…)
It’s no surprise to me when the MSM pontificates about the Hispanic vote when it tries to explain the immigration policies of this administration. But I was expecting more clarity in conservative publications. A couple of recent articles continue the myth of the “Hispanic vote.”

First, Jim Meyers wrote in “Arizona’s Illegals War Roils Country”(Newsmax) that “Rep. Luis Guitierrez, D-Ill alluded to the fact that 68 percent of Hispanic voters backed Obama in 2008.” The article also showed pie charts detailing the percentages of the Hispanic vote in previous presidential elections. I’m always puzzled by the way the media can determine who votes for whom when we still supposedly have a secret ballot. What are they basing those percentages on- exit polling; addresses? How about voter fraud?
Immigrants from any country cannot vote unless they are naturalized although some Democrats want to do away with that provision here in NYC. Former City Councilman Bill Perkins tried to pass a resolution allowing legal immigrants the right to vote. He insisted that since they paid taxes they should have a right to choose their representatives. I pointed out in my 2005 New York Sun column (Only Citizens Have the Right To Vote ) that these individuals get benefits for their taxes, e.g. police, sanitation, etc. (more…)
The FBI arrested fiery New York columnist, Vicky Pelaez in late June. An editor and writer for the Spanish language newspaper El Diario/La Prensa, she was charged with being an unregistered agent of the Russian government. Her far-left, anti-American columns won accolades from American progressives, and from the Hispanic diaspora in the U.S. Released on bail to home detention during the Fourth of July long weekend, she was part of the spy swap in Vienna today that saw ten confessed Russian agents exchanged for four Russians accused of working for the U.S.

A sample from a Pelaez editorial in El Diario, translated from Spanish scorched the policies of her adopted country: “…refusing to hear … the popular resistance and the opinion of the majority of countries in the world, the Big Boss [the United States] supported the putschists’ … illegal [Honduran] presidential elections…” Pelaez finished her Dec. 1, 2009 anti-American rant, written in her comfortable suburban house in Yonkers, N.Y., with a tired revolutionary screech, “as long as injustice and poverty remain dominant, the struggle will continue.”
Soviet intelligence operatives (the KGB and its successor, the SVR), starting in the 1920s, recruited agents in the press to influence American opinion. The goal of the communist influence messages, as directed by Vladimir Lenin, was to destroy “the Main Enemy” from within. Lenin used this tactic, learned in his own Revolution, because he knew the Soviet army was too weak to take on the American military.
The influence message, boiled down to its essence was, and is, “America is an irredeemably racist, sexist, foreigner-hating, imperialistic, war-mongering country that deserves to be destroyed.” Repeating this message over and over, like an advertising campaign, rooted the message deep in the psyches of the past several generations. The ultimate result of decades of propagating this message through the press, education and academia, and Hollywood has been the attitude known as Political Correctness. (more…)
In a recent column I wrote for Irish Examiner USA, I mentioned an email I received that was politically correct but that I thought was very funny. I debated including it in the column but decided against it for the sake of my publisher.
Apparently we’re no longer allowed to laugh at anything remotely unflattering to ourselves or certain minorities, and that’s not only a shame, it’s downright dangerous.
Joan Rivers used to tell jokes about Italians; Don Rickles insulted everybody, and Jackie Mason still tells jokes about Jews. Now it seems as if some Hispanics are now being encouraged to be as testy over slights as are certain Muslims over perceived disses of the prophet Mohammed.

Here at Big Journalism, however, the mission should be to write about things too edgy for the MSM so here it is and if you’re black or Hispanic and get offended, you need to check your humor level. You may be a few quarts low. (more…)
Caramba!
This phrase, in the New York Times article, about pro-life advocates encouraging greater black participation in the right-to-life cause and taking on the legacy of Margaret Sanger, got my attention: “ … the anti-abortion movement, long viewed as almost exclusively white and Republican … ”
Viewed by whom? The mostly melanin-challenged, liberal editorial board of the New York Times? Yeah, right.
First, two words to all of you icky white, colorblind Republicans who have been déclassé enough to take a stand against the assassination of voiceless unborn children throughout the years: Thank you. You are doing the Lord’s work. Keep it up!

Second, Latinos are eager to add some spice to this just cause. Polls consistently show that a majority of Hispanic voters (full disclosure: my mami and papi are Central American) describe themselves as “pro-life.” A Pew Hispanic Center survey reports that while 57% of Hispanics believe abortion should be “illegal,” the number rockets to 77% when the Hispanics describe themselves as “evangelical.” Meanwhile, one Zogby International poll revealed that: (more…)
