Let’s face it. From the 2004 New York Yankees to that statue of Saddam Hussein, most of us get a kick out of seeing the mighty fall. And that’s essentially what’s happening to teachers’ unions all over this nation. For all the good they did when they were first formed 50 to 75 years ago, teachers’ unions have devolved into opponents of meaningful educational reform.
Teaching is steady work and in most states the pay is now about the same as a mid-level manager in business, but the profession requires substantially fewer days of work per year. And sure, there have been recent layoffs, but even in bad economic times, those who remain in the classroom manage to secure substantial raises and maintain their Cadillac health care plans while most of the rest of us in the private sector must beg our employers for a paltry increase and hope we don’t get sick. Still, good teachers themselves remain largely popular in their respective communities — and justifiably so.

So why are teachers’ unions losing clout? One big reason is that after decades of reflexive support, the news media are finally starting to turn against them. That’s right. Journalists and editors, many of whom belong to labor unions themselves, are finally waking up to the plain fact that taking courses and simply showing up to work every day — the standard measures that the unions demand in determining wages — are poor incentives to improve performance.
A story in yesterday’s Washington Post on the recent ratification of a new D.C. teachers contract, which calls for using student improvement as a measure of teacher evaluations, was as balanced a piece as you will ever see. In addition, the Post’s progressive editorial board has been remarkably supportive of D.C. school Superintendent Michelle Rhee’s plans to make it easier to remove chronically underperforming teachers from the classroom. Commendably, the Post’s editorial page has also been a proponent of nationwide school reform in general.
Other examples of changing media attitudes abound. A move earlier this year by the superintendent of the Central Falls, R.I., school district to fire all of the district’s teachers who wouldn’t accept new labor terms was the subject of fair but tough media coverage — both locally and nationally.
Even the New York Times editorial board last year blasted the National Education Association for being “aggressively hidebound.” And in a piece that shook the big-city educational establishment to its core, Steven Brill of the liberal New Yorker magazine published a piece that exposed the New York City practice of paying hundreds of teachers charged with misconduct to report every day to a “rubber room” where they play cards, surf the web and nap.

Only a few years ago, newspapers and television news were chock-full of highly critical stories about charter schools and education vouchers. Ten years ago, fellow reporters on my education beat in Dutchess County, N.Y., were horrified at the fact that some charter school teachers were uncertified and did not belong to organized labor. Oh, the horror!
Nowadays, for every news story or thundering editorial about crooked charter schools, you’re just as likely to see stories about non-traditional schools in which students from modest backgrounds succeed as innovative teachers and administrators are relieved from the crushing burden of repressive bureaucracies.
What accounts for this attitude adjustment? Why are journalists, most of whom are Democrats or independents sympathetic to Democrats, now viewing one of the largest and most liberal special interest groups in the nation with a wary eye?
It’s really quite simple. The current system is failing us and journalists know it. And just as corporation-loving Republicans are turning against BP because of public fury at the monstrous oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, so too have many Democrats turned against the teachers’ unions in the face of constituents who view the education lobby as an unacceptable barrier to reform.
Oh, and another thing. With the possible exception of Eleanor Clift, most major-market journalists wouldn’t be caught dead sending their kids to public schools. You see, Sidwell Friends doesn’t offer tenure. And guess what? It’s a pretty good school in spite of it.

I've been teaching for the last 28 years. My first 5 were at a private school and while my pay was low, and we had small budgets, the quality of the education we were providing was twice as good. Why did I leave? We moved and the next place we lived didn't have any private schools.
On a slightly different topic . . . Humorous cartoon with Obama titled "Keeping Busy" which shows why he hasn't had time to address the real issues in America at http://drawfortruth.wordpress.com/category/obama/
well, if you like the quality of free public education, i'll bet you can't wait for free public health care?
This is just another reminder of the fact that Unions have outlived their purpose. Now they are a drag on the economy and evidentally the education of our country.
We'll know that the media has turned against the teachers unions when they start to report on the sexual abuse of students by teachers.
In the last 10 years there have been tens of thousands of allegations of abuse in New York City alone. Across the entire US in the same period, there were less than 10 allegations involving a Catholic priest. While I agree that Catholic priests have to meet a higher standard, we entrust our children to teachers for significantly longer and more frequent periods of time.
Why would parents allow others (the state) to control their children and their own family life? Why would parents send their children to places they themselves would not go? Why do so many parents permit their children to spend time around other adults (teachers), and children, they themselves would not be caught within a mile of? Why do parents of children in public school permit their children to spend time in environments rife with bullying, moral degeneracy, drugs, and many of which have armed guards and metal detectors…environments they themselves would not tolerate in their places of work? Don't their children deserve better?
Apparently not. They really, really, really love them though.
'363, you are so right. Just like public educaton is dominated by teachers unions, just wait until you see the amount of power wielded by nurses' unions and doctors' assocations when the government takes over. The experience in Canada had been that of longer wait times and poorer service, but you never see an underpaid nurse or doctor.
Wow, actually giving credit, once again, to the Old Media for getting a report right, fair and balanced.
Nice.
If only there were more articles out there where the bias, the politics, the manipulation isn't there, and where journalism and a reasonable perspective is apparent.
"It’s really quite simple. The current system is failing us and journalists know it."
Journalists don't suddenly change their tune after protecting the teacher unions for decades based on discovering that the current system doesn't work. There has to be far more to it than that. If it was that simple, the journalists would have stopped touting the man-made global warming myth by now. Truth and fact have been shown to mean little to most of the MSM journalists over the years.
I have no idea what the other issues are which are causing the change in the journalistic world but it has to be far more than just waking up to the fact that the teacher unions are destroying the education system of this country.
I am a lifetime member of NEA and I am fed up with the organization. It has been taken over by Marxists who are using the organization to further their political agenda. They are very politically active in helping Obama change America into another failed socialist state. Although NEA has done many wonderful things for teachers on the local level; at the national level it has become corrupt and does not represent its mainstream members.
God, I love living in Texas!
It's amazed me that the WaPo has been so supportive of Michelle Rhee and her attempt to reform DC's schools. I think the fact that the teachers' unions have been so recalcitrant about even the smallest reforms have soured the journalists on them. Also, with so many reporters and newspeople being downsized, I'm sure they're starting to look more closely at the unions' idea of job security for even the worst teachers.
You are right on that Thomas, the education of our children should be of ultimate importance as a parent, but way too many pass the buck. This is not only a minority problem as many of the ' well to do ' parents raise more hell about the teachers correcting their little precious ones than the low income parents.
My wife works at a public school as a paraprofessional, she is not protected by tenure, and every year has to go through a review process to evaluate her performance and value to the school. The school board tries to cull the teachers that they don't think will make it in the first two years. If they can make it the two years they get tenure and the schools then have a fight on their hands to do anything with them.
Being around school activities a lot and knowing some of the inner workings and politics helps me to understand both sides of the story.
[...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Big Tweeting, Susan . Susan said: Yup -> "teachers unions have devolved into opponents of meaningful educational reform." via Bigjournalism http://bit.ly/caRxwZ [...]
Most parents doing it don't have much choice. It's the public school they're assigned or … well what? This is why people argue for school vouchers promoting school choice. Explain the system some European countries have of settling the money allocated for the student on the school the student's parents choose, and I haven't run into a single, solitary parent who doesn't light up and virtually exclaim "Eureka!" The problem is that most people don't know that there could be another way, and I blame that on under-reporting in the media. It isn't enough to have them just blasting teachers' unions, they also need to report on what the options to the current system are, IMO.
As the money continues to dry up, even the the densest of journalists start to "see" to bigger picture..
A picture most of us have been seeing for many years now.. to our horror and dismay…
The LA school board decides to teach that the Arizona Law on Illegal immigration is morally wqrong. It will become part of the curriculum.
These are the same people that negotiate the contracts for salaries and benefits with the teachers' unions. I would love to figure out how to get a hidden camera into these closed procedings. HELP JAMES! Anyone else think this system is flawed?
"The experience in Canada had been that of longer wait times and poorer service, but you never see an underpaid nurse or doctor. "
You will in America. Doctors already receive next to nothing in reimbursement for Medicare and Medicaid patients here, which are government run. Right now they get nearly all of their pay from bumping up the charges to the privately insured.
I would argue most parents have been brainwashed into thinking they themselves are incapable of evaluating the so-called professionals, even if it's true they cannot adequately teach molecular biology or Tudor drama.
For me, it's about control. I am parent. No one tells flesh of my flesh and bone of my bone about what time they get up, but I. No one directs my children what time they eat lunch, but I, and so on. The sight of children hanging around on street corners between 6.30-7.30 in the morning, waiting to be picked up and driven all over, is shameful. I decide when we go on vacation, not the state. I decide what books my children read, not the state. I decide which humans (exemplifying virtue) my children will model their lives after, not the state.
Whether one home-schools or has one's children educated privately, parents retain control. I am not interested in the state evaluating my childrens "usefulness" to society, they do not exist for the benefit of society, they are not here to be counted in the aggregate toward some amorphous economy, the very idea that my neighbours consider they have an interest in determining my children must or ought to be "productive members of society" is terrible (really examine the underlying premise) in it's condescension, it's hubris.
The school district resolution also opposed another new Arizona law that bans schools from teaching classes that promote the overthrow of the government.
Without that threat, our country is doomed.
As always, Petee….right to the point.
ew…..can't wait till next year when I get to go on MC….whether I freaking want to or not! Welcome to America, land of the free….unless you're 65!
I was just about to post a question about that, Luisced! I know Texas is a "open shop" state but I wondered how many teachers "opt" for union membership and how many don't. Any idea?
Bianca,
Did you catch the interview of the NJ Teacher's Union on Christie's financial strangle hold on teacher pay raises?
Wow if this creep was in charge of my kids's schooling….I'd run. He all but threatened that teachers would SEE TO IT NJ kids did poorly on their national tests if the teachers didn't get YET ANOTHER pay raise.
Hell we should ALL have teachers's hours, apparently endless break time, weekends, evenings, holidays and summers off, and ZERO re-certification requirements that other professionals have to go through every few years.
I so weep for them…..
President Reagan had the fortitude to take on the Union representing the Air Traffic Controllers. They called a strike, he fired them, He wouldn't relent, that was the end of the Air Traffic Controllers union. Teachers are public employees paid with taxpayer dollars, I await the powers to be in the Union halls in NJ to call a strike, but you notice all they do is run ads against Govenor Chrisie, will they have the mind-set of a union diehard and call a strike…………..I for one hope so. Govenor Christie will be the first sitting Republican Govenor to apply "Alinsky" tactics on the left…..never let a crisis go to waste. The people of NJ will give him a standing ovation.
Why should LA schools start to teach FACTS now? They have been teaching pure fantasy for decades. Witness the product of Crack California Education in action………
WARNING. DO NOT, REPEAT DO NOT DRINK WHILE VIEWING THIS VIDEO!
http://dailybail.com/home/meet-chairman-bernankes...
i heard a democrats take on this, he said they took a oath to take care of patients, he likens this to a vow of poverty. he always tells me they don't need any money. then i ask him how are they supposed to pay back their loan, office rent, employees, consumables(band aids and gauze), and still afford to have a life, that includes possibly a wife and children. he just shouts back, he makes enough money, he doesn't need any more. then he wears a shirt, trying to unionize local school bus drivers, so he can make more money. democrats often talk out of both sides of thier face.
I don't know. I do know they don't have anywhere near the power they have in most other states.
When government takes over, the doctors and nurses will be in a much stronger position to push for higher fees from the government. Currently, the US government has wiggle room on what it pays because the private system absorbs what the government doesn't pay. And note – not one of the termporary Medicare doctor fee reductions has been implemented. The so-called "Doctor Fix" was even put in separate legislation so that Doctors could be given a Medicare raise without it appearing to be part of the healthcare legislation.
Doctors are also mobile. If retirements and migration reduce the pool of doctors, the government will be at the mercy of the ones that are left.
But that is nothing compared with what nurses will be able to do. Watch for the nurses unions to become as powerful as the other government unions.
That was pure torture!
Like, when we like make the growing things because the land IS free, but if like you know California being our home…………
That proves it. It is NOT possible to actually write that stuff.
"Democrats often talk out of both sides of their face." You mean, their ass</>. Oh, wait – you're talking about Democrats: face – ass – same thing.
I would agree with you totally. My husband and I are desparately trying to figure out how to plan for our own child's educational future. Home-schooling would be my preference, but then we are trying to figure out how to make do with essentially one income. Private school would also be a good option, but then, we are trying to figure out how to get one or the other or both of us much better jobs so we can pay tuition. The last option is to audit all the public districts in our area to try to find one with high parent involvement and decent quality; those still exist, but most exist in small towns where you have to hope you can find a good job in a much more limited economic situation.
We have those options and can make them work if we plan correctly. We're willing to find a way. There are plenty of situations where one or more of those options simply does not exist.
I've heard that there were more allegations of abuse by teachers in the Los Angeles school district than there are students in the entire Catholic parochial school system.
The real story is that African-Americans have finally waked up and smelled the coffee. The MSM had to follow.
"For all the good [teachers' unions] did when they were first formed 50 to 75 years ago"
Like what? These are not coal miners here, but white-collar professionals (or at least claim they are).
Awww Oregon,
Now I feel bad inflicting California University education on ya. Here….watch this. It will take away all the "O.M.G. itis" and I think it should be the official video of the Tea Party! For real….enjoy!
I believe in the American people's ability to do extraordinary things when called upon. If the Tea Party wants something to "identify" with…this is it. Popcorn and kleenex time.
Take heart. Our race is not yet run. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-KvaeuIIsw&fe....
PS: my win ticket is framed and has pride of place in my study.
See what happens when parents realize they are ultimately responsible for the education of their children?
If we're not there yet, I can't wait for the day when less then half all school-aged children attend public schools.
That was AWESOME! Thanks. My wife is the horse person in our family, so I forwarded the video to her. I know she'll like it also.
BTW, the best thing that I have ever done in my marriage was to buy her a horse and saddle three years ago. Owning a horse was always a dream of hers. We got "Hank" and the saddle for $800. It turned out that Hank's saddle was a custom made cutting saddle made by Veach Saddlery in 1968 in your neck of the woods. Our antiques road show moment…$5000 at auction.
One last thing. As a non-horse person and an object of their disdain, why, when they are trying to kill you with their front feet, they call that rearing instead of fronting? Just asking…..
I don't think anybody in the world argues that the vital job that teachers provide should command hearty financial remuneration. I just think people are tired of the lackadaisical and hands-off teachers that became teachers because they weren't sure what else to do with themselves. Great teachers are obvious. Poor ones the same.
I understand the need for collective bargaining in large school districts but its the union's "let's protect the crappy ones too" mantra that loses me. If you really wanted to keep your union strong, you'd cut out the weak members. Then again, what the hell do I know about unions, I vote conservative.
LOL Oregon,
Oh yes, smart move indeed. But you're right. They don't call it the sport of kings for NOTHIN.
I have two show jumpers that are perfect in every way, every day forever and ever, haha! That said, they are both over 18 hands high and run about 1500/per month each to maintain in the style I can only WISH I COULD BECOME ACCUSTOMED!
High maintanence don't half cover horses and mine as I said are perfect…no health problems, no leg problems, no attitude problems, and my God can we just FLY over fences. But as with yachts….might as well light hundred dollar bills in a high wind! Still would not trade one of them for a producing diamond mine! They are amazing and funny, and they've saved my ass on more than one round, and are beautiful movers, and easy keepers and…….
well…you get da picture.
)))
When talking about horses, you remind me of someone I know. The two of you could go on and on and on…
One son, two dogs, one horse and I do my best to be patient.
All Unions must be abolished and outlawed if this country is to ever get back on it's feet.
" just wait until you see the amount of power wielded by nurses' unions" you don't even want to hear what my sister-in-law has been telling me about her new union nursing job. she's literally to the point where she's about to start whispering to neglected patients, "run fast. run far. run to another hospital while you still can!"
Whoa totally missed that last sentence…..
I don't know which "they" you're talkin about but as a life long professional I'll tell you only two things are total deal breakers in buyin a horse for me. One is broken wind, a respiratory condition that is not fixable and makes the horse "give out" at odd moments and also makes a distinctive sound judges know and fault or excuse you from the show ring over….
and rearing.
Nasty nasty nasty, can kill people including the rider and if it can't be fixed and by fixed I mean COMPLETELY ERADICATED within 3 months….is absolutely to be avoided. And like a house with a cracked foundation….you cannot, CANNOT SELL that horse to anyone. Unsafe on steroids. Not funny, not cute, not just playin around. Rearing accidents are always fubar central. It endangers everyone near the horse or on the horse. Very bad mojo.
Are you speaking of rearing as in Hi Ho Silver or "striking" which is kicking out at you with a foreleg, knees bent, or "pawing" the ground and catchin a piece of you in the process.
Rearing the whole front end of the horse and both feet are off the ground. NOT GOOD. Requires a professional trainer and intensive work to eradicate. If they've been doing it for very long, prospects are not good. One of the only ways to eradicate it is lightning fast, anticipatory response pushing the horse forward and making them keep going forward till they're half dead or the sun goes down, whichever. The discipline must be instantaneous. 5 second rule.
Striking, one leg reaching out intentionally to nail you, YOU DISCIPLINE WITH PREJUDICE. It's still dangerous and very bad manners. Give them a fast whack with crop from the ground so long as everyone knows the plan, or from the saddle, rider should clamp the hell on, turn the horse and move them forward just as they try to do it, forcing them to bear weight. Make them circle on the side of the leg they tried to use till hell freezes over a few times and they'll get the message. All of this has to be done AT THE TIME. 5 second window and the horse has already forgotten the behavior. Still dangerous and expensive if they nail someone who isn't inclined to forgive….if you get my drift.
Third one's benign, part of ground mannering. Ground manners are like teaching a kid how to play nice. When an animal can break bones and kill folks, their manners on the ground are your responsibility and legal obligation. In fact ANYTHING a horse does, fair or not, IS THE OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITY. Therefore, teaching them all SORTS of manners and safe ground and under saddle behavior is imperative for everyone involved.
My two boys, I can literally walk under them while grooming or tacking them, sit in an English Saddle with the reins slack and my feet out of the stirrups, have a smoke, walk around on the buckle, wash, curry, treat injuries….anything I, a vet, or a ferrier need to do with 99% assurance they will stand there like perfect gentlemen and never endanger anyone.
So, there's the breakdown.
Look at the behavior, try to figure out what elicits it, and ERADICATE IT. Same for kickers. Won't have it. Kicks can maim or kill. If they don't come around with concerted modificatiion they go down the road….literally.
There are too many great ones out there to get a bad one given the inherent risk of even riding a good one. All horses spook and freak and stumble. Got enough to worry about without dangerous behavior added to the mix.
Now you know way more than you ever wanted about horses, lol.
The unions chased the "normal school" (teacher trade school) grads out so the college grads could take their jobs. I don't count that as a win.
lol, omg this woman hasn't got a clue about real life.
Oh, I've worked for a few employers who would feed the workers to the hogs come payday if they thought they could get away with it. Unions can serve a purpose. "Threat."
Give me a minute and maybe I'll think up another purpose.
Uh, there's got to be something.
Give me another minute…
(mumble)
Ah, but how many TV dramas feature a bad teacher? Many show bad Priests, therefore Priests must be viewed with suspicion… http://hellgazette.blogspot.com/
Like my daddy used to say….She not only don't know nuthin…she don't even suspect!
Vegetable TREES????
FREE LAND?????
We might have to pay the farmers???
Ya think????
Dear God….has she procreated yet?
Smitty,
Excellent point. I remember that strike and he wasn't kidding around. Would NOT hire any of them back either. Never even THOUGHT about the fact that teachers ARE paid with tax dollars. So no, there should not be unions getting tax dollars. When you put it that way it sounds insane! And nobody, except a product of union education, can say education has improved as a result of unions. It's worse than I've ever seen. I thought my education compared to my mom's was bad…or at least lest stringent and thorough. She could do my math homework faster and more accurately than I could, knew more history and read faster too.
What are we thinking? It's like kids know all this exotic stuff but can't count back change from a $20! No common sense whatsoever. And no reasoning skills. agggg…when you mess with schools you create or cheat a whole generation of human beings who will be the ones to pay for our failure!
yikes
To a point, gesq1,
They should be paid comparable HOURLY wages or income. Remember they are done by 4, no weekends, holidays and summers off in most places. Better than banker's hours to someone who puts in a 9-5 year round week with one vacation week a year, not always paid for.
Also why do they get a pass on continuing ed requirements? Every other professional has to recertify at least every 4-5 years or lose their license. Teachers pass once and it's done for life. I think they should be required to demonstrate competence in their field at least as often as accountants and doctors. They are fond of reminding us about how important their jobs are….well even their students have to pass proficiency tests. Why not them, lol.
Maybe the MSM is realizing that Greeze is going down because of it's Unions demanding more money?
No, that would give to much credit to the MSM. There must be another motive!
bingo
The depth of your knowledge shows through. You obviously are a true professional. I have to admit that the last sentance was a lame attempt at being a smart a$$. Very small play on words. ;- )
For many here it began when the grocery store workers went on strike because they were going to have to contribute about $15 towards their health care. To the average person this did not pass the smell test. What it did accomplish is that the average Joe and Jane started learning about other professions that were similar. Hence the education system.
If more people only knew how bad the system we might see Greece.
I wonder if maybe the level of outrage is dependent upon the genders involved, as there definitely seems to be varying standards. Most of the pedophile priest episodes were older man/younger boy, and most people are outraged. Likewise, when teacher-on-student abuse is older man/younger girl, most people are outraged. But I've noticed that when the teacher-on-student situation is older woman/younger boy, *some* people are outraged, while others say "You go, dude!"
I'm not saying that I agree with this, mind you; that's just been my observation over the years.
"Like what? These are not coal miners here, but white-collar professionals (or at least claim they are). "
Agreed. Teaching is a profession, not a trade, so there's no reason for them to have a union. When is the last time you saw another profession (doctors, lawyers, etc.) go on strike?
Precisely. They might have made sense 100 years ago, when there really were sweatshops in this country, but all they do now is help turn members of the otherwise productive class into unproductive drains on society by giving them things they haven't earned (i.e. automatic raises for time served, rather than based on performance). And there's that whole breeding-ground-for-thuggery thing, too…
I am retired from teaching in Texas for 20 years. There were no unions – just teachers' organizations that one could or could not join as we wished. I know of no one who was pressured to do so. Some of the organizations are loosely affiliated with the NEA. Teachers here in elementary and secondary schools do NOT have tenure, though it is difficult to fire them, it can be done on the basis of poor evaluations over a number of years. Teachers are evaluated by classroom visits every year or every several years based on their past evaluations. Those who have poor evaluations are put on a growth plan and are supposed to be closely followed and go to both formal and informal classes to improve their skills. Teachers do not have the right to strike in Texas.
I'm ok with them being salaried if what they would generally earn per hour in the aggregate can be prorated across the year. The benefit of a three month vacation should certainly factor in. I would, however, also factor in the fact that many teachers do their lesson plans and grade papers at home, off the clock.
I couldn't echo your sentiments on continuing ed more. I spend 12 hours a year on MANDATORY continuing ed – that I pay for! Frankly, I don't think my job is as important as the job of the teacher. Why they're immune, I do not know. Oh wait, yes, I do. the union.
The majority of doctors on the list requesting licensure in the U.S. are foreign-trained. Predominantly from the Caribbean islands, I believe.
Remember, after government healthcare was instituted, it was the massive need for healthcare workers in the UK, that caused them to toss aside immigration policy and admit hordes of Muslims. Now, the favorite baby boy's name is Mohammed, and there are Sharia courts in the UK.
Of course, the Marxists in DC leading the charge to "fundamentally transform this country" know all that well. Just part of the plan, folks…move along…nothing to see here.
LIO: "Why, when they are trying to kill you with their front feet, they call that rearing instead of fronting? Just asking….."
Hahahahahahahaha….thanks for the good start to the weekend!
Vegetable trees, and lollypop vines.
Just another way of revealing the Liberal lack of common sense and overall intelligence.
Did you know Austria got Hungary and fried Turkey in Greece?
Well, the Marxists have been conducting a study for the past year+.
They are hoping to "reinvigorate" the media.
Like we haven't been seeing that coming over the horizon for a long time now…
The MSM sees the writing on the wall: Kids can't read, ergo they won't buy newspapers, therefore the teachers destroyed the MSM's jobs. Poetic justice?
TR
Not much creditability left over at the MSM, no matter how they spin…
Most of us have moved on, marginalizing them in the process..
Hey there Texas, just got home and LIO shared your commentary on ground manners. Couldn't agree more! I only lament I can't use a dressage whip and 12 ft lead on some people I know…
I've asked my husband to follow you so we can see what you have to say in the future. Thank goodness for Amercians with a grasp of reality!
[...] Ah, the union. Look, unions are often necessary. Heck, I’m a union member. The concept of labor providing a balanced market force against management to secure fair and reasonable wages and benefits is necessary in a free society. However, practice has blown theory out of the water. The forces are no longer balanced. Thanks to bumbling politicians, unions in states like California are bankrupting the treasury. Pension provisions, excessive salary demands, and wacky tenure agreements that prohibit incompetent or even criminal teachers from being fired, have completely corrupted our country’s educational foundation. Don’t get me wrong – teachers deserve reasonable pay, benefits, and pensions. They are responsible for our children, after all. But we have let the situation go way beyond reasonable. [...]
