The resignation under pressure of Washington Post blogger David Weigel raises so many important issues that it’s difficult to know where to start. So I’ll limit my comments to a few of the most important:
Coming on the heels of the firing of Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, Weigel’s exit reinforces the notion that anything journalists and public figures say, write or do can become part of the public record with a few keystrokes and the click of a mouse. McChrystal was a fool to think that a journalist — especially a freelancer — would not report disparaging remarks made about Obama administration officials and their policies, even if those remarks were made at a bar in the euphoric haze of Margaritas during happy hour.

So, too, was Weigel a fool to think his comments about the conservative movement in an off-the-record list serve would not become public, especially when those remarks were highly disparaging toward the people he covered. Weigel has since issued a half-apology, but the damage has been done.
The goal of any good journalist should be to get at the truth and be as fair as possible to all sides. Do journalists have opinions? Well, contrary to popular belief, reporters are human beings. And they have opinions — sometimes very strong ones — about the people they cover. Heck, just walk into any newsroom and listen to the jokes and wisecracks reporters tell at the expense of public officials. For that reason, lest they be overheard making fun of the mayor’s toupee or the local school board’s boneheaded policy, journalists are trained to be wary of newsroom visitors.
The problem is that the general public thinks journalists should have no opinions at all. So when they lower their guards and offer candid views, the prevailing assumption is that they cannot possibly be fair in their coverage. Nonsense, I say.
When I was covering municipal government, I maintained a blog on my company’s website. I offered frank opinions — sometimes on topics I was covering as a straight journalist. I had managed to convince my editor that unless I went completely over-the-top, readers would find the transparency of my views on those topics refreshing. My publisher was mostly supportive of that effort and for that reason the blog was a big success.
But Weigel’s private contempt for the conservative movement was so intense that the Post had no choice but to accept his resignation. For even if he was still technically fair in his coverage, his credibility had been greatly compromised and his sources would surely have dried up had he continued covering the conservative movement.

The larger question is how the Post could have hired a guy like Weigel to cover the right in the first place? Was the Post’s hiring process so superficial that management could not detect Weigel’s strong views during the interview process? Did they know he disliked conservatives and hired him anyway? Was there a complete absence of reporters in their applicant pool who held no deep animus toward conservatives? Is Ezra Klein that powerful?
Will we ever find out the answer to those questions? Don’t hold your breath. Journalists and editors routinely disparage public officials and corporate executives for ducking responsibility, issuing vaguely worded press releases and trying to manage the news during a crisis. So what do news organizations do during their own crises? They mostly duck responsibility, issue vaguely worded press releases and try to manage the news. I would expect nothing more from house that Katharine Graham built.

Imagine if a conservative had written all this. He wouldn't have resigned. He would have been fired. And condemned by every MSM outlet in existence. What have we heard from the MSM about this? NOTHING!
If it weren't for double standards, the left would have no standards at all.
Journalism is the ability to meet the challenge of filling space. If this is true, hiring journalists brings about an interesting dilemma when considering applicant qualifications: just like whores, regardless of their high ideals, journalists have to resort to tricks in order to make money.
Weigel was what the Soviets would have called an "agent in place". They were supposed to live the double life. He just sucked at it and got caught. We used to execute spies…..I guess now they just go to our very own little commie house….HuffPo.
"Journalism is the ability to meet the challenge of filling space."
You forgot the second part: "……..and selling advertising."
"For even if he was still technically fair in his coverage,"
Bollocks. His "coverage" was nonstop sneer and smear of the Bill Maher gutter grade.
And shame on Weigel for posing as a "conservative," the lying douche.
Funny, a month ago, wasn't he complaining about how Palin addressed her concerns about having a media stalker living 12 feet away from her house? Calling her childish & hateful for worrying about her children and going with the excuse "well, she shouldn't expect to have privacy" ?
Looks like that last assertion about privacy came back to bite him in the ass.
Tea Partiers were born in the midst of the greatest economic meltdown since the Great Depression. Moderates, democrats, libertarians, blacks, Hispanics, elderly, out of work, and conservatives found common ground in the idea of protecting what they feel is the best approach to saving ourselves and our posterity- to limit and conserve past government practices toward a constitutional perspective, original intents.
At the same time of our spectacular, frightening melt down, government is appropriating the practice of medicine, 1/6th of the economy, as some kind of quasi governmental hostage- correctly perceived as a stepping stone to a complete government healthcare takeover. President Obama's ideas on this have been widely published and there is no mystery here to his strategic slicing of the pie.
Former President Clinton failed in his bid for national healthcare and that episode was just as filled with the joust of rhetoric, just no Tea Partiers. There were no charges of racism then, and shouldn't be now since bad health afflicts all regardless of color.
Had Weigel found proof of racism, his journalistic conscience would have demanded he publish the damning truth, and hence, the real frustration is that liberals can't put any nails into that coffin. The nails aren't there- and that kills the thesis.
I see he is now at HuffPo, the land of never was and hasbeens. What's the matter Weigel, didn't have enough lotion to get on at Media Mutters?
He probably cheated on George Soros for Arianna Huffington. Then he'll make up with Soros and all three of them will have a slippery liberal lotion party together every Friday night.
…Okay, that last sentence makes me feel like taking a shower now. Oy.
With Arianna's history with men, he'll probably run off with Olberman to some love shack.
I see he is now at HuffPo, the land of never was and hasbeens
With the exception of Greg Gutfeld, this is true.
If "journalists" concentrated on filling the space between their ears with truth, rather than parroting progressive talking points, we would all be much better off.
They would probably not be going broke either.
Well, and Breitbart escaped too.
I'm still not so sure about Gutfeld and his obsessions with pool boys and unicorns (Griffins Rule!). Maybe that's why he's on at 2am.
I think Weigel just wrote what he, in his twisted liberal mind, seen as the truth. Liberals don't run on logic so it's easy to see how emotion took hold and destroyed him. A logical person would lock away their personal feelings until they are somewhere with people that they can safely discuss their views. Liberals don't do that. They go crazy at the mere mention of a conservatives name. They don't care to discuss the other half of the arguement because, as one libs once told me, "It's stupid." There minds are made up. They simply know it all and even when they fail over, and over, and over again they still go back to the same old ideas. They just don't learn………..at all!
The larger question is how the Post could have hired a guy like Weigel to cover the right in the first place?
Are you seriously asking this about the DNC newsletter?
OMG……………..That pic of Bite-Me looks just like the ventriloquist Jeff Dunams' character "Walter".

"Heck, just walk into any newsroom"
No thanks, I try avoid places where I'm going to encounter large numbers of communist toads.
I hate to inform the author but "journalists" are not nearly as good at disguising their own thinking as they seem to believe. The subject doesn't matter. The choice of words, the writer's thrust and summation, invariably reveal the writer's thinking.
Add to that the fact that 97% of journalists self-identify as democrats and it makes it fairly simple to just assume that what ever you read in the MSM is from the left.
