The the resident Goddess of Snark at the New York Times, Maureen Dowd, thinks that Christine O’Donnell lives in a fantasy world. Sneering at O’Donnell’s interest in J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis says more about Dowd’s isolation from normal Americans than it does about the GOP senate candidate from Delaware. If she bothered to check she would see that the two Oxford Inklings are amongst the best selling authors of all time. Their works have profoundly influenced tens of millions of lives and in spite of the critics, are major touchstones of 20th century literature.
It is not surprising that Dowd regards Tolkien and Lewis as her cultural enemies; they may be dead and gone but the emanations of their penumbras threaten her in ways that she may sense, but that she is probably afraid to examine deeply. Maybe its the fact that the Lord of the Rings has sold more than 150 million copies. Maybe its the fact that it, like the works of C.S. Lewis, celebrate the values of courage, honor, loyalty, friendship and patriotism. Or just maybe, its that her peers really believed in the inevitable rise to power, of what in the late 1960s and early 1970s was called the counterculture. Millions of students, hippies and other freaks were reading Tolkien and absorbing his ideas and rejecting those of the New Left.
C.S. Lewis never gained the cult status of Tolkien, but his books have had an influence on this culture that no purely secular writer can hope to obtain. He may have died almost 47 years ago, but to the anti-religious elites he is still the object of their hatred. He did after all, write some of the most enduring stories about Christianity and about humanity’s relationship with God. If Christine O’Donnell is a fan of Lewis, it indicates to the New York Times that something is seriously wrong with her.
What Dowd’s column shows is that the split in that emerged in the early seventies between the New Left and the Hippies never really went away. Dowd, like Willam Ayers or Abbie Hoffman or some other almost forgotten radical leader, has never really forgiven the Hippies for not being revolutionaries, for preferring the dubious joys of sex drugs and rock and roll to the exquisite pleasures of political power.
In the Age of Reagan, the New Leftists retreated to the universities and the Hippies melted away into the background (only to remerge in Eric Cartman’s nightmares.) Many of them, influenced in part by Tolkien, switched sides and supported Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984. The old actor represented courage and idealism in ways that neither Carter nor Mondale could ever hope to do. It may be this that frightens Ms. Dowd more than anything else.
Christie O’Donnell’s messy life, her search for transcendence, her idealism and her open religiosity remind anyone who even vaguely remembers the 1960s and 1970s.
Of the real, as opposed to imaginary “Hippie Chicks” of the era, Dowd may put O’Donnell down as “loopy” but she represents something that the older members of the cultural elite once had a powerful influence over. Those girls were used and abused in ways that few today remember, but that marked them and their generation forever.
In the anti- Vietnam War movement, the call “Chicks up front” and the slogan “Girls say yes to boys who say no” were powerful tools. The use of sex and sexual imagery as a weapon to helped defeat America and South Vietnam and to bring the Khmer Rouge to power may have been successful but it had a price. It is well known that the resentments it created helped bring the modern feminist movement into existence. What is less well known was that it left behind tens of thousands of spiritually and emotionally wounded women. This was hinted at in the movie Forrest Gump, but otherwise has rarely been mentioned.
In the end, it may be ironic if those women, ignored and scorned for so many years now, are ultimately vindicated by the improbable figure of Christine O’Donnell.

Maureen Dowd the libtard cleanup maid
Leading the way for Barry-Bop's crusade
At one time she was quiet proud
To have attracted such a liberal crowd
But now so bitter she needs to be laid.
Years ago I would have considered myself not educated enough to have an intelligent opinion worth sharing.
Having raised a daughter who just started her senior year in high school, I believe I have a bit of a resume, only from the parental side, but that still counts.
It ain't easy. And outside influences seldom help, unless you really, really look for them, like finding our Church community.
Of course Dowd is going to snark. That's all she's got. That's it. That and the pseudo power her position gives to her snark, based upon the unwashed (or in her case the washed) masses some how believe she deserves.
Forget Dowd, forget the left, keep our eyes on the prize. November 2nd. We The People are coming.
Everyone that I know has read at least one book by J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis- my parents, my friends, my friends' parents… to me, this cements Ms. O' Donnell's status as one of us "common folks."
If this is the best the NYT can come up with, then they are seriously scraping at the bottom of the barrel.
Many of my seminary professors had no use for Lewis, either. They thought him a childlike, simplistic, superficial amateur who relied unduly upon supernatural explanations. Perhaps they also disapproved of him because he didn't use words like "hegemonic" and "womynism," refer to "AD" and "BC" as "CE" and "BCE,' or rely upon obfuscatory sesquipedalian tergiversation to make his points. He did, however, talk about Jesus and faith, which my professors thought was an unfair short-circuiting of rational rhetoricism. Sorry, fellow commenters – that's what seminary often was like.
J.R.R. Tolkien was a best friend to this kid growing up in Hong Kong/Guam/So. Cal/England in the 70's.
If this is to be the litmus test, then she and anyone else who's been influenced by this author have not only my vote, but funds to run their campaigns!!!
Obviously, she will be eaten by orks.
Lewis is still my all-time favorite author (and Tolkien is no slouch, either) and I"m not even a Christian! Way to make more enemies, MoDo, there's tens of millions of us, and, once again, people like you have deigned to wake the sleeping giant to your own, very real, detriment.
Christine O'Donnell may or may not be the real deal as a Conservative, but the beginning of the end of Republican compromise with liberals and the Left, has made Mo Dowd unleash the long knives of hysteria toward any "TeaParty" candidates…
She sees the handwriting on the wall, beginning with the words "We the People"….
I'm pretty sure Orcs have much better taste than eating something as spoiled as MoDo.
All of these attacks on O'Donnell don't resonate with me.
She played with a Ouija board in high school. (So what?) She read J.R.R. Tolkien's books. (Yes and about 50 million other people did too.) She's a fan of the Chronicles of Narnia. (See above.) She has trouble paying her bills. (Me too.) Does this mean I am a member of the racist-secret agenda-tea party club? If so, I never recieved my secret de-coder ring!
Lewis and Tolkien are literary giants, Dowd writes nonsense that would embarrass a 15 year old valley girl.
Shame on O'Donnell for being literate! How dare she read such works like Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters? She should be reading real literary classics like Bushworld and Are Men Necessary?….
At least Dowd uses her own words this time.
Nothing scares "elites" like MoDo'h more than "average Joe and Jane" getting into positions of power and supplanting the reliable "Old Guard" pols who steal the citizens $$$$$ and waste it on causes "near & dear" to these "elitist" frauds.
For instance – "Anthropogenic Global Warming" – what a huge crock of crap.
Like Thunk above says, I have more in common with O'Donnell than I have in common with a total fraud like Obama or the "Kings" of the Republican Party.
When's the last time they entered a grocery store with exactly $9.00 and not a penny more and had to figure out how to make that food you bought last a week and a half? (it can be done, Ramen!) When have they shivered under three blankets because the heater broke and couldn't afford to fix it for a few weeks? Hmmmm?
Real life isn't a chauffered black car wisking one "Uptown" to dinner then to the country home in Conneticut for the VAST MAJORITY of the country.
News flash New York Times et al; the game is up. The "times they are a-changin"
Unbelievable, that this simpering, shallow socialite, who fancies herself clever but who is possessed of at best a third-rate intellect, should presume to speak in such terms of minds such as these!
Let me tell you a bit about one of the men MoDo dares to speak of with such scorn: raised an orphan, Tolkien was awarded a full exhibition (scholarship) to Oxford in Classics; the competetive examination required not just the usual Latin authors but classical, demotic and New Testament Greek. But in the meantime the schoolboy Tolkien also managed to teach himself Anglo-Saxon, Old Norse and even Gothic! After taking 1st Class Honours from Oxford in English Language, Tolkien fought in World War I, edited the Oxford English Dictionary, founded the English Language program at Leeds University- and then returned to Oxford in 1925 having been elected to the Rawlinson and Bosworth Chair of Anglo-Saxon at the astonishing age of 33.
Tolkien carried a double load of lectures, being the de facto professor of Old Norse as well as A-S; his 1936 lecture/paper on Beowulf revolutionized study of that poem (on which he was considered the world's leading expert). Of course he did Middle English, too, just because. In 1945 he became Merton Professor of English Language- no more prestigious than his previous Chair, but it paid better.
During all this time Tolkien raised four children and put them through private school on a meager academic salary, tutoring students and marking exams for spare cash. And so it was only late at night, and during vacations, that he managed to write his masterpiece, over the course of 12+ years (Note that he didn't become a dole-sponger so he could write full-time, like a certain other fantasy author I could name).
And a pathetic drab like Mo Dowd, that dim Upper East Side social X-ray of the sort Tom Wolfe skewerd so justly, has the effrontery to dismiss a mind worth a dozen of hers?
Tolkien was also a devout Newmanite Catholic, attending Mass daily, and well-versed in theology, which he could debate as skilfully as he could Germanic vowel-shifts. He was a patriotic little-England Conservative and had the contempt for the left which one would expect from a genius with such profound insight into human nature and history, and who had worked bloody hard for everything he had:
""I am not a ‘socialist’ in any sense, being adverse to ‘planning’ (as must be plain) most of all because the ‘planners’, when they acquire power, become so bad ." And he recognized the potential evils of faux-populist 'democracy' as surely as did the Framers and de Toqueville (being fully aware, of course, that 'democracy' is Greek for 'mob rule'): "I am not a 'democrat' only because 'humility' and equality are spiritual principles corrupted by the attempt to mechanize and formalize them, with the result that we get not universal smallness and humility, but universal greatness and pride, till some Orc gets hold of a ring of power – and then we get and are getting slavery."
Mo Dowd calls to mind Cassius on Caesar: "… and we petty men walk under his huge legs and peep about to find ourselves dishonourable graves."
Pathetic little worm.
C.S.Lewis's Screwtape Letters, sums us all up.
Dowd has been stupid for many years. She could not hold down a real job.
….MoDo is an Orc…
And they eat their own.
….When the Balrog of Marxism falls into the Pit on Nov. 2nd, somewhere J.R.R. and C.S. will be smiling…..
outstanding, well played Sir!
"As IF!"
"…We'll be able with the money you earn, to make Narnia a country worth living in. There'll be oranges and bananas pouring in-and roads and big cities and schools and offices and whips and muzzles and saddles and cages and kennels and prisons-Oh, everything."
"But we don't want all those things, " said an old Bear. "We want to be free. And we want to hear Aslan speak himself."
"Now don't you start arguing, " said the Ape, "for it's a thing I won't stand. I'm a Man: you're only a fat, stupid old Bear. What do you know about freedom? You think freedom means doing what you like. Well, you're wrong. That isn't true freedom. True freedom is doing what I tell you."
The Last Battle. C.S. Lewis. Think maybe they don't like him because he had their number?
"Screwtape Proposes A Toast" was written 50 years ago, and it describes a modern liberal's thinking to a "T". C.S. Lewis was a very sharp guy.
Latin & Attic Greek are hard enough, but Tolkien even learned some Finnish, a non Indo-European language, and the basis for his Elvish languages he later invented. He loved the sound of it, so alien and beautiful, different from any Romance, Hellenic or Germanic tongue.
C.S. Lewis had more intellectual weight in his little finger than Dowd has possessed in her entire life. Put Lewis in a debate with Dowd and you would watch a giant steamrolling over a flea. Dowd should just stick to snark and complaining about Republicans. When you attack literary titans it tends to magnify your own inadequacies.
I didn't perceive Dowd's article to be as snarky as most of the readers. I'll go read it again. Or maybe I was so flabbergasted by what she said about Obama that I didn't pay attention. Of course, I don't consider "living in the fantasy world of Tolkien and Lewis " to be an insult. uhh? Ya'll have *read* the essay, haven't you?
I am so sure!
For God sake man, we can't read EVERYTHING, their is a world full of beer out there. Put down the book and grab a church key.
Like I was going to say that.
Not only does MoDo lack class, she lacks the ability to recognize quality literature. And not "quality literature" like some meaningless-yet-deep-and-relevant deconstructionist sh*t, but modern epics, the tales that remind us our lives DO have inherent meaning. That's not fantasy, MoDo. Socialism benefiting the poor and middle class is a fantasy. Oh wait, I've got it – it's Opposite Day in MoDo land!
"like totally!"
I think the name, "Dowd" says it all. She is certainly a dowd.
Just as prescient is the dialogue which comes right before your extract:
"No, no, no,' howled the Beasts. "It can't be true. Aslan would never sell us into slavery to the King of Calormen."
"None of that! Hold your noise!' said the Ape with a snarl. "Who said anything about slavery? You won't be slaves. You'll be paid – very good wages, too. That is to say, your pay will be paid into Aslan's treasury and he will use it all for everybody's good."
Nothing new under the Sun is there.
Obama – the Ape.
King of Calormen – Soros.
Tash – Karl Marx.
Tirian – Palin.
Puzzle – Hope 'n' change (he's a Donkey after all.)
Moron Dowdy is F**king Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs!
The amazing C S Lewis said "A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word 'darkness' on the walls of his cell." Looks like Maureen has been scribbling again.
Why insult 15 year old Vally Girls, Poop flinging rope swinging monkeys would be embarrassed. sorry monkeys.
Like, gag me with a spoon!
Anthony Hopkins as CS Lewis:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-Hqv9RfKaA&fe...
Sadly, Dowd must put down what she fears.
Giant Slimmy Swamp Etins more likely.
You sure Puzzle isn't Al Franken?
Amen to that, Dr. Scanlon.
strange coincidence, I finally got all of my stuff out of military storage (i just got back to Okinawa from Afghanistan) and i was excited to find my copies of the Chronicles of Narnia and Lord of the Rings. This makes me want to read them again.
Thank you for such a beautiful defense of one of my formative authors. I remember clearly, when I was in 10th grade, burying myself for days on end in Middle-earth.
Wow, NYT is stupid for allowing MoDo to hack away at this megalith. So MoDo was trying to cement O'Donnell's position with us "little people?"
Thanks Jamesb. I was just cruising, and followed you here, might not have seen Bohemond's defense but for you. You are correct, "outstanding."
God Bless, Warrior… STAY STRONG, BRAVE and BEAUTIFUL for FREEDOM….. MSgt, USAF (Ret.)….
Are you sure she's not Gollum, searching in vein for her Precious?
Nah. Puzzle is a sham on the outside but sweet and decent on the inside – classic wishful thinking and easily misled, but Franken just gets uglier the deeper you dig.
Dowdy doody is desperately in need of attention. I hope the next round of lay offs at the NYT includes her. Pinch will get his $5 million bonus regardless how many he has to lay off. Karma is also a bitch.
I'll take Tolkein and Lewis over whatever garbage Maureen Dowd has on her bookshelves any day of the week. Heck, I'll take Jordan, Goodkind, Pratchett, Lackey, Leiber, and Rawn as well.
But then, those writers actually show intelligence and real ability to write. A foreign concept for Maureen Dowd.
…..Eloquent, Informative and Incisive – With an Elegantly Acerbic Ending…….You da' Man, 'Mond !……
Now I am not a literary expert, far from it.. but I listened to Chritine O'Donnell, and her niece, Jenna Murry, give a seminar on the women of JRR Tolkein's The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, on Dec 2003, via video, as the Communications Director, of the Collegiate Institute. I have been a fan of JRR Tolkien's work, since I first saw the Animation version of Lord of the Rings, in movie theaters, in the late 70's. Her seminar was extremely informative, on the women of the stories, and gave a lot of detailed analysis. She is very intelligent and knowledgeable, in whatever she discusses.
Now with respect to both JRR Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, they were, and still are, and will remain extremely mainstream and popular, in today's society. Now these , anti-american, counter culture revolutionaries, like bill ayers, and abby hoffman, always wanted the book of J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, and Holden Caulfield, to be the reading, and anti-american counter culture ideological literature, for the people to see sacred and without question, and not S.C. Lewis and JRR Tolkein.
But, it's not working out that way, and they don't like it.. Thank goodness..
The rise of the American Tea Party Movement, and the awakening of All Americans, to the reality of of what is happening in, and to, America, has absolutely given Americans a new found sense of Responsibilities and as the real Power and Authority in America. And Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, Nikki Haley, Christine O'Donnell, etc., represents the new emergence of Conservative Power Women, today.
Dowd. . . . . . . tired old skank . . . . of the left. . . . . . . . . . a plain looking woman.. with a lot of make up….. Godless . . . . . . filthy . . . . . . . . . libertine .. .. .. .. .. cosmopolitan……self styled ''genius'' . . . . . another dolt…. a different day
Thank you for your kind words, MSgt – they mean a lot to me
I will definitely continue fighting for our freedom, and I can't wait to get back to America so I can actually start getting involved and helping to restore our country – I feel so detached all the way over here in Okinawa.
Also, thank you for having served in the Air Force – I am proud to call someone like you a brother in arms. Keep fighting the good fight, and keep propogating the TRUTH in your eloquent, educated style!!! God Bless!
"Millions of students, hippies and other freaks were reading Tolkien and absorbing his ideas and rejecting those of the New Left."
Or just as often, missing the point.
Well said, sir, well said!
Just an aside, but I love your username.
I had the first Ballantine Books unauthorized, version of LOTR, wore them out, bought more sets as needed, bought new copies for all my kids.
Some of the Immutable Laws of Dowd (from Oxblog):
4. It is much better to be cute than coherent.
5. Maureen knows best. Her long years as a columnist (doing basically what your great-aunt Tillie does in the nursing home bull sessions, but getting paid for it) have given her deep insight into foreign relations, politics, welfare, the Constitution, and all other topics. To disagree with Maureen in any way is not only a sign of being wrong, it's a hallmark of pure evil…or at least membership in the NRA, which is pretty much the same thing
6. It is usually possible and always desirable to name-drop and name-call in the same sentence.
7. The particulars of my consumer-driven, shamefully self-involved life reveal universal truths.
Excellent exposition, Taylor!
Your piece finally accounts for the millions of idealist hippies who have disappeared into the fabric of American mainstream and, as you say, still have their learned values of truth, honor, and Love within themselves! And you can see them at the TEA Parties.
They disapproved because Lewis was a highly regarded intellectual who believed in God.
Real life isn't a chauffered black car wisking one "Uptown" to dinner then to the country home in Conneticut for the VAST MAJORITY of the country.
Yeah, but I wouldn't complain if it were MY real life.
It was enough that he was a respected intellectual who believed in a real God.
Ya, me too. My black Mustang does take me 'uptown' to "Sonic" for a Brown Bag Special once in a while.
I won a reading contest in the fifth grade. My teacher gave me my first copy of The Hobbit. That started my Tolkien collection. I caught on to Lewis later, finding out how they knew each other and politely competed was fascinating.
One could argue that blanket, unspecific criticism of someone because they appreciate some of the finest English language literature written by some really, really smart guys is petulant.
That makes Dowd nothing but a crank and a Wormwood.
I am craving a Sonic Burger with jalapenos now. Thanks a lot! Actually, I am really wishing my husband would finish the resto on the 68 convertible he's had since we got married. Then we, too, could cruise after jalapeno burgers in our Mustang.
Ooops! I'm not sure what parts of the country are "Sonic free zones" so to speak. I was going to say Dairy Queen but that's kind of "Flyover Country"/Texas oriented.
We're the same basic age, so the '68 Mustand cv is very cool. My first car (that I owned, not borrowed) was a '67 Camaro convertible. Ah, to be a "teenage Broncin' Buck with a pink carnation and a pickup truck" or in my case a Camaro again. Alas, time marches on.
And I wonder what "classic literature" that skank indulges in. Her narcisism screams Catcher In The Rye*
*the single gayest book ever written
no, it means you can't be a senator. Don't you know you have to be rich, ivy league educated and know important people to be a representative?
The culture war continues and it really is a battle of "good vs. evil". I'm happy that my three daughters made it through public school, mostly here in NY, and retained their "pro-life" beliefs. Unfortunately, the pressure and propaganda regarding homosexuality was too much for them, and they have been conned into believing the "it's just another lifestyle choice" lie of the left.
One correction to a comment made by the author. The lead woman character in "Forrest Gump" was dealing more with the effects of child abuse; the "new sexuality" of the '60's was just the environment she was living in at the time.
Way to go, MoDo. Way to bring people back into the fold by smearing two of the most beloved and influential authors of the last century, and by default anyone who has read their works and been influenced by them. You really are a first class dingbat.
I have the feeling MoDo has an autographed copy of "Eat, Pray, Love." You know, because it's so empowering, not a piece of self-indulgent pap.
HEAR, HEAR!
Tolkien's essay on "Beowulf" is genius. It's not only smart and insightful, but it's downright FUNNY in parts. The man could turn a phrase so sharply it'd give MoDo whiplash trying to mimic him. In fifty years no one will remember dowdy Dowd, but Tolkien's legacy is immortal.
So tempted to make a chart comparing the actions and traits of the EPL girl to those of the Narnia ladies…
Lewis' "Mere Christianity" should be required reading for those who fancy themselves too intelligent to entertain "ancient superstition".
The Gray Lady is sinking and Dowd will be like the Capt of the ship screaming women & children first while she remains to sink with the ship !!! What she fails to understand is her employer isn't able to attract anyone new to there dying Liberal forum so they have to take what there given and well Dowd is to date the only thing they have left, good for us bad for them !!!
If we fail to make the necessary changes, we will never have such a grand opportunity as we have coming in November !!! The People of Delaware must pull the Right lever and send a clear message to those who used to work in DC !!!
there is a division in the Church politic…..the liberal National Council of Churches, Harvard and Yale Divinity Schools….and the conservative "rest" of us who have read C.S.Lewis and understood him….
Our Sonic is less than a mile away. They have been expanding in the last few years and I even saw them in Oregon this summer.
Wow. You were the coolest. I was torn between the 67 and 69, but my first car was a Dodge Colt. My husband's crazy Mustang is the last old one he had when we got married. We drove that thing all over L.A. before moving to Florida to start the resto (in 95, ahem). When the body guy stripped it to the frame, we were shocked to see how little of the metal had been supporting us on our adventures. We probably would not have started the whole thing if we had known how bad it was. At least his hobby doesn't take place in bars!
Please, please, send this to Ms. Dowd c/o the NYT!
Of course Chris Coons is a true horror, denounced by the independent left in his own state for being a crony of politically connected developers: http://freedomist.com/2010/09/20/delaware-left-ca...
Bruce Majors http://teapartiers.blogspot.com/2010/09/stop-disa...
Another liberal writer with professional envy of true literary giants. She and her kind obviously are suffering from Dowd-syndrome. Is she the red-head version of the White Witch? Remember, in her realm it is always winter-never Christmas.
Oh, yes! How could I have forgotten Finnish?
