The special election in Massachusetts on Tuesday for the open Senate seat once held by Teddy Kennedy is the hottest political story of the day. The race is so close that no one is sure who will win but signs are starting to point to a Republican Scott Brown’s victory. And it doesn’t help when Patrick Kennedy, son of the late Lion, doesn’t even know Coakley’s first name.
Cue the Associated Press with a Saturday puff piece on Democrat Martha Coakley that tries to sell her as an “historic candidate” perhaps in order to help push her over the top just before the polls open on Tuesday.

Written by Steve LeBlanc, the AP headlined its piece, “Coakley Hopes for Historic Win in Kennedy Seat Bid.” The subtitle explains why her candidacy is “historic.” It reads: “Coakley aims to hold off GOP surge for Kennedy seat, become 1st woman elected senator in Mass.”
What puffery. The days when it was noteworthy that a woman was elected to high office are long past. For decades we’ve had women elected in just about every position in politics from the city and state level all the way to the highest offices. In fact, the only two jobs that have yet to see a female elected to them are president and vice president, though we have had credible candidates for both. For all else, women have long since shattered the glass ceiling. So, how “historic” could it be that we might have yet another elected female Senator? Aren’t there several female senators now serving? Of course there are – 16 of them, in fact.
Then there is the assumed status of the Massachusetts Senate seat being “the Kennedy seat” as reiterated by the AP. Last week during the debate between Democrat Coakley and Republican Brown, the Republican scored some points by reminding debate moderator David Gergen that the seat was not the Kennedy seat but was instead “the people’s seat.”
If the seat is continually referred to as “Ted Kennedy’s seat,” this can only be an attempt to claim that the seat somehow belongs both to the Kennedy clan and the Democrats, an assumption that would tend to diminish Republican Brown’s chances to win should the electorate accept the assumption.
The piece goes on to explain that “for much of her campaign,” Coakley has “steered clear of the Kennedy mystique,” and been “low key” in her efforts. This initial proclamation of her moderation is established in the first paragraph but the truth is her campaign has turned increasingly to mud-slinging.
In fact, it’s been Coakley opponent, Scott Brown, who’s been low-key in his campaign approach. As Dan Roem of the National Journal’s Hot Line On Call noted, Brown’s campaign has eschewed hard-line politics, even going so far as to downplay party affiliation. This is similar to the successful campaign of Virginia’s new Governor Bob McDonnell who won office on a campaign of “sunny optimism” last November.
No matter how you look at it, MA is simply not VA when it comes to politics. But don’t tell that to state Sen. Scott Brown (R) and AG Martha Coakley (D), who seem to be mirroring their Old Dominion counterparts in multiple ways.
Coakley and VA state Sen. Creigh Deeds (D) are both life-long residents of their states while both Brown and VA Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell (R) served in their state’s House. Each politico has a record of long public service too.
Roem correctly notes that Coakley has been employing a lot of negative campaign tactics, something that the AP doesn’t bother to note much for its readers.
The AP piece then goes to recount Coakley’s success as a state prosecutor in the District Attorney’s office. Interestingly, there is not a single mention of her most famous debacle as DA: the Gerald “Tookie” Amirault case where Coakley actively worked against the wrongly convicted Amirault’s commutation, and left an innocent man to rot in jail for two more years, before he was finally paroled. But why would we want an even-handed discussion of Coakley in an AP puff piece, eh?

As if to certify that it has no desire to at all help out Coakley’s opponent Scott Brown, the AP ends its piece by giving its readers a link to her campaign website but not a link to Scott Brown’s website.
Taken in all, this Associated Press piece seems to be merely a Coakley campaign press release as opposed to any sort of unbiased reporting of her campaign. And that this piece was posted near the eve of the election seems geared toward giving Martha Coakley an assist.

The new wonder phrase to lead the sheeple with. The journalist most likely attended a major journalism school like Columbia eh comrade PT?
She really can be a historic candidate particularly if she is beaten in the election. Good luck to the buxche
I can only hope that the reference to the "Kennedy" seat backfires and causes her to lose. The AP is biased journalism at it's worst
The AP and the rest of the MSM no longer have the ability to embargo news, thanks to sites such as Big Journalism.
I do hope she loses, but wouldn't be surprised to find a surge of new registrations (ACORN style) and votes…
Historic is old news. Obama and the news media used the word "Historic" to get their people out to vote for him so they could be part of history. Well is a "historic" vote equal to a smart, well inform voter? NO
Local newspapers across the country are failing because much of the news they "report" comes from the AP, which serious media consumers figured out some time ago isn't exactly a "fair and balanced" news source. Journalism today is a shameful travesty of what the Founders intended it to be. As Steve LeBlanc's article proves, journalists are more interested in advancing their personal political and social agendas than maintaining their role as guardians of our freedom. They're so blinded by ideological bias, they don't even realize they're biased.
historic? not hardly. laughable? absolutely! this candidate looks to be just another elitist from the left that has no idea what the real world is about.
The health-care ‘union deal’ will prove Coakley’s undoing. Massachusetts is chock-full of Democrat voters, but less than half of them are unionized. These are the people that Obama (and, by extension, Coakley) just threw under the bus. When you play ‘favorites’ with a special interest group, be prepared to get bludgeoned by those who aren’t part of that group. The bludgeoning happens tomorrow.
I am so disgusted by the gerrymandering by the so-called press! They have NO RIGHT to 'prefer' one candidate over another! Why can't they just report the 'news' and allow the public to make their own informed decisions?? Oh, that's right…how is the public supposed to be informed when they only get ONE side of the story!!??? I hope every biased newspaper in the country goes bankrupt!! The government has no business 'bailing out' a failed newspaper because of shoddy journalism…not that they can even be called journalist!
Historic! Unprecedented! First (insert historically unprecedented word here) candidate ever!!
Can't they come up with some new campaign ideas? It sure worked in 2008, but the political landscape, and the American public, are not buying into the same old crap.
Get a clue.
Teddy Kennedy's seat….. ewww…. I would bet that Scott Brown has that reupholstered or prefers to stand.
Also note the AP{ piece refers to her "upstart" ( a word with only negative connotations) Republican "rival" Scott Brown. Brown has a standard issue background in elective office from such a one-party state. The "upstart characterization reinforces the lese majeste tone of the AP piece.
it might be historic, afterall the voters of mass will finally wakeup and see the error of their ways, and fianally vote a republican into office.
The democrats are not going to let a silly thing like fair elections and our Constitution get in the way of something as "important" as their "health care reform". They are going to steal this one, like they stole minnesota. Brown is going to have to win by an overwhelming majority if he wants to actually get the seat.
Everything is "historic" and "unexpected" with these clowns.
Hey, for the first time in nearly 5 decades that seat will be held by somebody who never killed a woman, as far as we know, no matter who wins. THAT'S historic.
I think they are making a mistake calling her election "historic". The country is seeing what the last "historic" election produced and they don't like it.
They've baited and switched- the new puff piece is marginally less egregious, but only just. It trumpets "Marcia" as the new champion of MLK, a life-long Republican, which they of course fail to mention. It goes on to quote the most memorable of Coakley's lines, while pretending objectivity by mentioning that Brown was present, but not allowed to speak.
The white House is pulling out all stops for Coakley:
WHITE HOUSE REQUESTS EMERGENCY AID FROM HAITI
http://naturalfake.wordpress.com/2010/01/17/white...
Why is "historic" presumed to be a good thing? Tragedies are just as "historic" as triumphs.
In Steve’s defense, he also wrote a piece on Scott Brown that also came out today.
I will note, however, that he did not call Scott’s run for the senate seat of one of the most blue states in the country as ‘historic,’ nor did he include a link to Scott’s website like he did for Coakley in the story he wrote about her.

Huston — I was skeptical of your critique of the AP article. I looked it up and found that you are 100% accurate.

I have already commented on PJM, but I do think this vote might be historic. But not in a good way, I am afraid. No man or woman of conscience should allow what is about to happen….to happen.
http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/democrats-plan-for-e...
I'm seeing a lot from the Creamer playbook that Beck talked about….
Everythings "historic"…. be a part of it!
Tear down the opposition.
I almost fell out of my chair when Martha pulled out the death blow of the 2008 campaign "Politics of the Past"…
She and Obama reverted to 2008 tactics because the tactics they used in the Nov 2009 elections were not effective.
Yes, thanks, thanks, thanks, go Big, go Breitbart!
Let's pray he does win big, otherwise I fear as you do that the crooks will take another senate seat!
I am so glad that we have really figureD out AP, we now know that any news from them is going to be biased, just as we now know all about the MSM! Knowledge is power, and now we know!
I'm not acquainted with how honestly the votes are counted in Mass. The Democrats are said to control everything, and for a long time. But in any state it remains hard to steal any but an extremely close election, the needed coordination is just plain difficult.
Today, on the last day before election, we can expect the media to discover polls that show Marcia rebounding, a previously undetected affection for ObamaCare across the entire nation, and several bad things about Republicans.
A plot to sell Cape Cod and Cape Ann to evil companies from Texas will be revealed.
One party control – by any party – is bad news. Eventually the dominant party comes to believe political power is their birthright. They regard one matter as settled forever; they are to rule.
That seems to be what happened to Marcia. Her expectations did made sense, after the rite of election she would be anointed in the Senate chamber. A new congressional medal would be struck; she would be The Savior of ObamaCare or perhaps Hero of SEIU Labor.
WTF?!?!? How can the historic Marcia Croakley not be wearing the Royal Scarf of Chappaquiddick? They key to the throne of Kennedy. My Global Warming, man, …….royal valet, dress her, AT ONCE!
Poor Martha. All Coaked out. Guess you need a few ACORNS for the tree? By the way-Ted Kennedy has now been sober for 5 months-a new record. Patrick is usually too high on Coak or his other dope. Remember when he crashed into that cop car in DC last yr?
I bopped over to PJM and read it. You're right. I have known the extent of the subversion for quite some time. Universities are infested however, I beg to differ on your assessment of today's college agers. They are really not all that intelligent. They have pathetic work ethics yet expect rapid employment well over their qualification level. Their ability to think critically is almost completely absent. They jump out of the diploma mill with a BA is BS and wonder why six figures are not instantly bestowed upon their barely educated heads. It's ridiculous. Sure, the Republican candidate does come out of the gate behind. I don't think 25% behind but, he/she is at a disadvantage.
She would be historic … as in a historically bad choice
Thank you David Gergen for serving up, unknowingly because he's a Democrat shill, the line of the campaign – and it has notyhing to do with Clueless Martha being "historic" – that being 'it is not "Teddy Seat", it's the People's Seat!'
That phrase will be ringing in the voters ears as they go to the polls.
The lunatic right wing cabal has publicized this race to such a degree that the turnout will be very high, and since we're talking Massachusetts, not Oklahoma, I predict Coakley will win.
I think you are dead wrong! Polls today(absentee ballot) have Brown up by 16 points. Most elections mirror the absentee ballot numbers. If he wins by 16 points, or even 10, there will be a tidal wave across the country larger than 94. You just sound like a worried Dem.
Yup….absolutely. And let's see how long the Dems in MA can drag out the certification of the election results…..
Well Maybe it would not be so historic if you think of all the women and men, black, white, asian, hispanic who were blocked form the seat all these years that the Kennedy was glued to it.. yes equal opportunity all these years later..
What a crock.. historic my a… the real story is how it was held captive..and gave no-one else a chance..
Now that's change I can believe in!
I certainly hope they try.
This race is the hottest story in the MSM and the alternative media. Let's shine some more light on ACORN in action.
Certainly be my first expenditure.
How about a competition to come up with what AP really stands for?
Actively Political?
Adled Personality?
Against People?
Ass Packers?
I don't know about that dd, there are some real tell tale signs of "Democrat Fatigue". Obama seemed weary and resigned, Kennedy (a living one) called his favorite candidate Marcia (?) and these elites just can't stop making gaffes that belittle middle class working Americans.
Bashing a guy for campaigning in a pickup truck (in a coordinated scripted manner) is just unwise,
Particularly where the previous elected occpant of this seat was (in)famous for his Oldsmobile/Submarine exploits.
I wouldn't metion vehicles of any kind.
If memory serves, I believe that the real "historic" first woman in the Senate was Republican Nancy Kassebaum, from my home state of Kansas.
As historic as the hyperbole makes it! Seems a bit desperate, calling the mundane "historic", but then, that's what desperate people do.
I hope she becomes a historical candidate.
I hope she is viewed historically as the harbringer of justice for corrupt politicians everywhere, I hope she goes down in flames and illuminates the rest of the country.
Go Scott GO!
I will second that, the majority of younger types suffer from self inflicted ignorance, high expectations, and low performance, and they quit all too easily.
I am not too worried about a slacker army causing any issues that can't be overcome by shutting off texting service for a month, to most of them that would be worse than waterboarding.
Yet another reason to hope Scott wins, that would put a major crimp in their auto-register-every-loser-slacker-illegal proposal.
the answer to a trivia question… and like the unfortunate new york giant baseball player, fred merkle, who made an error that was for generations called 'merkle's boner', we may be using marsha in the same way by saying that someone 'pulled a coakley'.
"Patrick Kennedy, son of the late Lion, doesn’t even know Coakley’s first name."
Give the guy a break – he was probably drunk at the time (like father, like son).
Historic. They're trying that OLD mantra again? Do they even have an original thought among them?
And what a dumb political move it is to give the union insured a tax break when they already have their vote. But alienate all those independents out there that are not union and will be paying a 40% tax on their plans. Keep digging Demos the hole is getting deep enough for all of you to fit in.
Why is this news? The relic media has been in the tank for the statists for as long as I can remember.
I'm glad I didn't bet money on it.
I thought it could happen, but I thought it would be one of those razor thin court battle jobs.
This was a flat out repudiation of ….er….not Kennedy….hmmmm… I wonder who?
