Many of us on the right like to claim that the Old Media is just an arm of the Democrat Party. Of course some of that on our part is bombast, but incidents such as the following tend to make conservative’s complaints seem more like right-on-target truth than over-the-top complaining.
On February 23, ABC TV Channel 7, WTRF News (Wheeling, West Virginia/ Steubenville, Ohio), posted on its website what was originally credited as a story “written by” reporter Bob Westfall. Unfortunately, though, this posting was nothing but a word-for-word re-posting of Democrat Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown’s latest press release. There was little to no difference between Brown’s press release and the “story” as posted on the ABC 7 news site.

Newspapers have been recycling press releases for eons, of course, although rarely did they publish them under the byline of a staff reporter. This story was up for most of the day, but was taken down in the early evening of February 23. One can only assume that WTRF got a bit embarrassed at its shilling for a Democrat Senator.
Here is a screen shot of the Google search page that showed WTRF’s original posting:

To show that there was really no difference between Senator Brown’s press release and the ABC 7 “story,” here is the story as supposedly written by reporter Bob Westfall as it appeared on the ABC 7, WTRF website:
Ohio Senator Urging Extension of Unemployment Benefits
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, is asking for an extension of federal unemployment insurance.
Story by Bob Westfall
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, Tuesday urged the extension of unemployment insurance to support Ohio’s dislocated workers and their families through Dec. 31, 2010.
Nearly 200,000 Ohioans will lose these emergency benefits if unemployment insurance is not extended by the end of the month.
“Too many middle class families are struggling to get by,” Brown said. “This legislation will help Ohioans and all Americans who worked hard and played by the rules but are still struggling to find jobs. We must extend unemployment insurance while passing critical jobs legislation that will give incentives to businesses that hire unemployed workers.”
In a letter to Senate Leadership, Brown called for full federal funding of the Extended Benefit program, increasing state and federal benefits by $25 per week, and the suspension of the federal income tax on an individual’s first $2,400 of unemployment benefits. Brown is also seeking an additional six months of extended benefits.
As of mid-February, more than 432,000 Ohioans were receiving unemployment compensation. Almost half of these Ohioans, nearly 200,000, will lose these benefits if unemployment insurance is not extended by the end of the month. In addition, more than 232,000 Ohioans receiving extended benefits will be ineligible for the next phase of benefits if no extension is passed.
Eligible workers may receive up to 26 weeks of unemployment insurance benefits. Previous extensions created two tiers of additional coverage: Tier 1, which provides up to 20 additional weeks of benefits, and Tier 2, which provides up to 13 additional weeks of benefits. The latest extension, passed in Nov. 2009, added one additional week to the Tier 2 benefits and created two new tiers: Tier 3 (up to 13 additional weeks of benefits) and Tier 4 (up to 6 additional weeks of benefits for workers in hard-hit states like Ohio).
Earlier this month, Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., sought to temporarily extend benefits. However, Reid’s bill was blocked by Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Now here is Brown’s press release from his U.S. Senate website.
Brown Urges Extension of Unemployment Insurance through 2010
Nearly 200,000 Ohioans Will Lose Coverage if Unemployment Insurance is Not Extended
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today urged the extension of unemployment insurance to support Ohio’s dislocated workers and their families through December 31, 2010. Nearly 200,000 Ohioans will lose these emergency benefits if unemployment insurance is not extended by the end of the month.

If you can find any material difference you have a sharper eye than I do! What we have here is a TV news site simply regurgitating a Democrat’s press release and acting as if it is reporting a “story.”
And the Old Media protests when conservatives claim that they are just an arm of the Democrat Party? With examples like this it sure is hard to refute the accusation, isn’t it?

Bombast?
Not really.
The entrenched media by acts of omission and commission have been operatives not merely for the Democratic Party, but for the furthest left reaches of the Democratic Party.
I would not give an inch on that statement.
Indisputable proof? Is that all you've got! Surely you must be racist.
So did Bob Westfall plagiarize the Senators news release or did WTRF attach Westfall's name to the Senators news release to make it appear to be a real reporter's written story? Either way, which one is the bad guy or are they both culpable? I'm just a country boy and not a lawyer, so was a law broken or is this just stuff happens?
You mean a racist-sexist-bigot-homophobe, don't you? Please be precise!
Material difference? I didn't know I had to be a rocket scientist to understand the intent of our elected officials.
Check that. I didn't know I had to be an exterminator to distinguish between bad cockroaches and evil cockroaches.
Excellent work Mr. Huston.
As a country boy and a lawyer, allow me to address your question: They both have their heads so far up the other's butt that you can't tell one from the other. It may not be a crime against the state, but it is definitely a crime against nature!
We have evolved. Now it's Racist-Sexist-Bigot-Homophobe-Wife Beater. Do try to keep up!

Seems to be getting harder and harder for the shills to hide…
Warner, WTRF is one of four TV stations ran by West Virginia Media Holding, owned by Bray Cary. They also own The State Journal. The company is widely considered to be conservative. I imagine WTRF took it down because it was a press release and not a news story, not because they were feeling guilty for shilling for Sen. Brown. Disclaimer: I was interviewed by Bray for his weekly show Decision Makers in regards to my fight to get press credentials at the W.Va. State Capitol.
"who wears denim cutoffs"….
yep. excellent work.
how can i get a job like that?
I should start a website and just post what ever media matters tells me to post.
see, everybody has got it wrong. the "writer" is also a mind reader. he predicted word for word what the senator was thinking, and wrote it down. so he didn't wait until the senator posted his press release, he transcribed it from his esp working overtime. what else can explain how it appears the same.
Let me see. Tom the commie pinko from Iowa does a sob story about some “constiuent” in “need” of DR Kevorkian healthcare and it turns out its a relative of one of his staff. By the way, thats hardly the first time thats happened. Remember Anita Hill being used against Clarence Thomas? Anita Hill was the one-time livein girlfriend of Howard Metzenbaums cheif of staff, John Brophy. Everyone in the media knew it, but shut up about it. Dont forget Joe the Plumber-Im SURE Helen Brown Murphy found out this dirt on Joe Wurltzulbacher on a SUNDAY on her own behest. Andrew, maybe you should find out what Murphy is doing these days. Likely working in another state job or with the SEIU or ACORN. And dont forget the 2004 “60 minutes” phony National guard story about GW Bush. Media today is ENTIRELY fraudulent, has no credability whatsoever.
That would make a rather disturbing, yet hilarious and accurate, political cartoon.
We really need to give the MSM a break, after all they are a product of their education. The dumbing down of America has been full throttle for the past 100years….<sarc>
And yet there are still folks in this country that can still think for themselves, not plagiarize, and most importantly take care of themselves even though they have gone through the public school system. I honestly think that the student who is the daydreamer makes it out of the system unscathed…we spent to much time thinking about what we were going to do when we got out of the classroom. We did the assignments expected, but maintained our minds by slipping off into our own thoughts. Rarely called out by the teacher as not listening because we were the quiet ones… I know it is how I survived their bullshit. Early on I recognized the stiffling environment of the system, probably by the third grade. It was not set up to recognize my talents but to extrude another brick in the wall, thus the daydreamer.
First, there were "Infomercials", now we have paid journalist "aditorials"
What's next? University researchers dummy up climate science to advance socialist causes in "profagandas"?
Westfall is the Milli Vanilli of journalism
What a bunch of blowhards.
Do you know that the reporter didn't fact check the press release before using it? Of course you don't, even though that simple difference (yes, he did and the figures are accurate or no, he didn't and he used inaccurate figures verbatim) would make all the difference to the tempest in a teapot which is all you have to stir up here at best. Unless you have some substantive error to point to that the reporter repeated as fact, you have shown absolutely nothing wrong here. All you've shown is that the reporter isn't a very good one which probably explains why he works for such a small market TV station.
This is all quite a bit different from a Fox News talking head repeating conjecture and rumor with the disclaimer "we have learned from sources" when they are simply repeating some blather that one of their "opinion shows" made up just an hour or so earlier.
Poor sad little conservative drones.
Another brick in the wall…
Absolutely. Virtually all of MSM is an arm of this administration.
It is the opposite of unbiased journalism.
You know had I done that with any of my original sources for any paper I ever wrote in school, I would have been in serious trouble failing grade aside because I was plagiarizing. That at least should concern you.
You're a good little soldier Bob.
Great catch!
WTRF "news" is the butt of many jokes for a morning radio show that covers WTRF's local area.
There are two CORE problems actively sinking the USA-Titanic:
[1] Corrupt Federal Government Monopoly; and [2] Corrupt Media Monopoly.
The majority continue on with the "moving of chairs on the deck" of the USA Titanic, they have allowed and enabled these corrupt conglomerates to evolve to complete dominance to this date, with the outcome being that our liberties and freedoms under the U.S. Constitution are mostly meaningless. The danger to the USA is not one political party or the other, or one media or news-outlet or the other, or just Barack Obama himself, he is a mere man-child-faux-elitist, and taken apart or together, they have proven they are all CORRUPT BEYOND REPAIR. But the real danger is a citizenry of lemmings capable of entrusting a man-child like Obama with the presidency. The real threat is a citizenry of fools that believe what they are told to believe by way of daily feedings from these eccentric power hungry media personalities, most of whom are severly mentally damaged by ego-centric illusionary self-images that, not only are they a danger to themselves, but to all those within earshot. No, it will be easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency and the mass-mind-manipulations daily delivered by the eccentric megla-maniacs, than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to allow such a man for their president and such men for their source of knowledge or news. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Obama and his harem of media [both the pro and the con], these are a mere symptom of what ails and is choking to near-death the late-great USA. Blaming this prince of the fools, and his adoring media-crud should not blind anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him and them, their princes and king. The republic can survive a “Barack Obama”, who is, after all, merely a fool of a man-child. The republic can survive the propaganda machine that are by fact foreign owned and controlled media conglomerates, and not news agencies. It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools such as those who made him their president and the daily dose of TV their Heroin. Those elected have not and do not follow the U.S. Constitution? How are these corrupt loons any different than the whole bunch of them that having been carrying-on now for decades corrupt to the core? U.S.A is now the Titanic in the world. There is no place to run and no place to hide; you have no laws under the U.S. Constitution once USURPER POTUS is enabled to go forth. The elephant in the living room is NATURAL BORN CITIZEN. The U.S. Constitution is “black and white”, no ambiguity whatsoever. Obama, in his own written word, acknowledged his father was NOT ever a U.S. Citizen; thus, like CA Gov Arnold, he IS NOT ELIGIBLE TO BE PRESIDENT. The governing allowed it, the media conglomerates enabled and empowered it through endless propaganda, and the [so-called free-] press allowed it, and has rather elected cowardice as its profession. AND YES, the electorate has allowed this LIE to continue to this day. The solution is found in the U.S. “dimwit” citizenry. Ancient Dictum: S/HE who REMAIN silent; CONSENTS. It is no wonder the polls are what they are, the dirty little secret behind the polls, is that everyone knows the truth, but nobody is telling the truth.
The MSM is not playing for the American team.
.
I would chalk this up to laziness. The reporter probably had a deadline to meet. It was close quitting time, so he copied/pasted, figuring no one would notice/care.
Irt's called plagiarism, asshat. Look it up.
Oh wait…you lemmings are unfamiliar with the notion of intellectual honesty, so never mind.
Doughboy, you couldn't make a point with a pencil sharpener.
I think it's technically called "collusion".

I protest your sticking ying next to yang. they have been on the outs for many years. ever since the great who is on top and who is on bottom controversy of 87, but the others are dead on. lol
sorry bad joke
Wow, how long ago did you go to school that you would have gotten in trouble for plagiarizing something. Now days if you ain't cheating, you ain't trying is the school mottos. The funny thing is that he argues about fact checking the article, not the fact the "reporter" used the whole press release as his article.
Nah, too grammatically correct. Probably Cheney…
They are playing for the Amerikan team.
I just wrote a book. Why don't you read the first couple of lines and tell me what you think?
t was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.
Never realized being an author would be so easy.
Sorry, but there's very little "there" there, except (and it's an important distinction) for the inclusion of a byline:
Press releases are an important public relations tool, and are typically a "win-win" for both the PR effort and the media outlet using the item(s). Editors frequently use them as fillers for odd white spaces too small for regular copy but too large to leave blank, and the submitter gains a bit of free publicity for his company, product or cause. The use of a byline, however, suggests (a) an editor's error, (b) a reporter's plagiarism, or (c) a confederation of dimwits.
… learn, pursue happiness….
LOL!
"All you've shown is that the reporter isn't a very good one…"
Uh, well, isn't that kinda the point of the article? I mean, this reporter isn't a very good one, you admit that much. Now, multiply that by the entire LameStreamMedia, and you'll begin to see what's going on here, and why we're so concerned. I mean, dude, did you not see that this website is called "Big Journalism," started by a conservative journalist activist and devoted to exposing LameStreamMedia bias, lies and general all-around crappiness?
Look, you should be as outraged about this journalistic malfeasance and obvious bias as the normal people who read this blog are. More so! People like you, who have such a limited intellectual capacity, are the ones that LameStreamMedia morons target. They are keeping you from the truth, my IQ-challenged friend, and you should be mad as Hades about it!
Not saying I disagree with any one point you make, but bro, consider taking your meds before writing War And Peace on a blog. Just saying.
I thought it was that he was being a Racist-Sexist-Bogoted-Gun Toting-Homophobic-Global Warming Denying-Wife Beating-Tea Bagger.

Has a nice flow to it. Think you might have some talent there.

You really think anybody gonna bother readin' all this shit you write? Get real …You be a waste a space…
This comment may seem like I have digressed from the above article, but in my mind, that could have been me if I was the one who coveted the teachers attention. Maybe there is something inherently wrong with the liberal mind and the conservative mind can never be trample down to mush….like Bob Westfall, WTRF News, MSNBC, Racheal Maddow, Keith Obermann….should I continue?
Bush did it!!!!
Excellent reporting Warner. Thank you. I wonder if they do the same thing for Republicans? It would be good to know either way.

What can be done about them? They're an embarrassment and even worse than Pravda. Their sale numbers keep falling but it doesn't appear to worry the big guys, they just willy nilly lay people off. Is it intentional, perhaps waiting for a bailout, another GM.
You understand! A kindred spirit!
What you say is (more) truth that, like a bitter pill, is hard to swallow, but none the less, good for you. We the people have been lulled into life and have allowed the shenanigans to go on far too long. The United States Congress is not "the playground" at school where bills are traded around like so many baseball cards. Bills should pass or fail on their merit. Let not your heart be troubled, we the people have been awakened and are ready to fight for as long as it takes to retrieve our country from the hands of these charlatans. We will win because we are right.
MSM hand-in-glove with the left? What rock do you live under? Granted all forms of media these days simply use the same talking points and retread stories. People such as FOX news and Murdoch are propaganda machines of the Republican party. CNN is FOX lite.
You're obviously a racist, tea-bagging, gun toting, bible toting, ineducated America hater for pointing this out
uneducated..sorry
"acts of omission and commission"
You said it perfectly.
What was it that editor of the (now defunct) Seattle PI said? Oh Yeah – "We decide what is news".
Sums up their attitude perfectly.
That's fine, but the "writer" didn't bother to include the fact that it was a press release he was using. If he would have written something like "according to the following Press release from…." He would have been alright and we wouldn't be ascribing nefarious motives to him. But he didn't, and so he looks like a shill for a specific political party and person – which he should not be, no matter how much he may agree with that position. IF he were a real reporter, that is.
When you are that far to the left, it must certainly look that way. I guess you think MSNBC is straight down the middle.
Did anybody point out to his publisher that he can save a buttload of cash by laying off the reporter and publishing the press releases directly?
A few years ago Walter Pincus at the Washington Post printed up the talking points from the office of Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich.) rather than writing his own article on some national security paper. There was a big correction the next day. One of the excuses was that Pincus is a really messy guy and he got the papers mixed up. The untidy defense.
Prof. Phil Jones of Climategate also used the "untidy defense". From the Daily Mail -"Professor Jones told the BBC yesterday there was truth in the observations of colleagues that he lacked organisational skills, that his office was swamped with piles of paper and that his record keeping is ‘not as good as it should be’."

love that word "aditorials"
Securing your residential foundation is a smart investment in the future of your home. By getting a foundation repair cost estimate to help determine the most effective solution for your property, you can make a more informed decision regarding future home improvement costs. A proper evaluation relies upon determining which structures and materials are necessary to ensure you get the best possible recommendation for repairing your home foundation. Keep in mind that any evaluation you receive should help you to make an informed decisions, whether you are looking to invest in your own home, business or an investment property.
Oviously someone at the good senator's office saw the news story in a crystal ball and realized it was perfect for a press release, so wrote it as one before the story came out.
As for the question of fact checking the article I only bother with the last sentence because I know off the top of my head that it is wrong. "Earlier this month, Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., sought to temporarily extend benefits. However, Reid’s bill was blocked by Minority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky." Actually it was blocked by Senator Bunning alone and had nothing to do with McConnell. It must be that to Sharrod Brown and Bob Westfall that all them Republicans look alike.
He could have saved all his time and energy and just wrote: Bush's fault.
I know he wanted to slip Bush's name in there somewhere.
I'm from that market and am familiar with WTRF. Considering the station's owner is very conservative, I doubt the intent was malicious. The station is woefully understaffed and the few reporters they have are incompetent. There's no excuse for using Brown's press release verbatim as a news story, certainly, but what WTRF did is pretty much SOP for some of these small market TV stations (and newspapers, I'm sorry to say).
True, that's what spoiled little children do, blame it on Bush….so juvenile!
See, Westfall split the first paragraph of the press release into 2 separate paragraphs. Changes the whole tenor of the thing, really.
Calm down…I think you need to study the Constitution a little more as well as the definition of "natural born citizen." Your comparison to Governor Schwarzenegger is illogicial. The governator was born in Austria to Austrian parents. He became a U.S. citizen through the "naturalization" process. President Obama was born to a "natural born citizen" mother and a Kenyan father in Hawaii. Last time I checked Hawaii was part of the United States, not that it is a matter of great consequence. One U.S. parent is enough to grant natural born citizenship rights.
I'm not a big fan of our President and I disagree with the vast majority of his domestic and foreign policies but these conspiracy theorists obsessed with his citizenship need to take a deep breath and actually do some authentic research. Remember, the same government that you accuse of being party to this alleged breach of constitutional law is the same one that cannot seem to manage the postal service. The government just isn't that good at keeping secrets, let alone running more and more of our lives. Let's keep our eyes on the ball and stop this silly, tin-foil on the head, black helicopter conspiracy mongering. It gives conservatism a bad name.
Par for the course.
Bee, I think you hit the misspell of ineducated just about right. I think ill-educated or mal-educated covers it pretty well.
