What is it that the left and the Old Media said about the Tea Party movement? Didn’t they say it was not really filled with regular folks and didn’t they say it was not really a grass roots level effort because some nefarious “top-down” Republican groups were secretly behind the whole thing? That’s what Paul Krugman said in The New York Times. So did Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi — after someone taught her what “astroturf” meant, that is. In fact, the whole left-wing Old Media establishment attacked the tea party movement as some fake, manufactured thing and claimed that it wasn’t peopled by regular folks like you and me. All you need do is put “astroturf” and “tea party” in a search engine and you’ll get thousands of hits revealing the left’s unhinged response to the tea parties, whose spirit was so memorably captured in this photograph by Glenn Reynolds (the great Instapundit) at the Quincy, Ill., tea party last year:

So, since they seem to want us to believe that they hate astroturf, will the left-wing press get all upset that this “coffee party” effort really is astroturf? Will the Old Media explode with charges of “astroturfing” as it did during the early phases of the tea party movement? Or will they pretend that this coffee party business is real grass roots and report on the effort based on that false assumption? Already it seems as though the coffee party effort is not meeting any real scrutiny and I just got an email that proves the essential “top-down” style upon which this effort is built.
Of course, we know the charge that the tea party movement is astroturf is untrue. While groups like Dick Armey’s Freedom Works, Americans for Prosperity, and a few others did rush to add their voices to the tea party events held all across the county last year (and continue to do so today) they neither originated the movement, nor did they invent the scope of events, nor did they control the message in any way. In fact they had to scramble to have any part in it at all. Even the big group’s efforts were ad hoc early on.
I know this because I was there in Chicago as the whole thing began and I saw when, where and how the larger national organizations arrived on the scene and it was later, not earlier, that it happened. I have, for instance, known Eric Odom, one of the early organizers of a large Chicago tea party event, since 2006. I watched as he staged the first big Chicago tea party and helped him build the effort in my own small way. (Odom now runs American Liberty Alliance.) I also have loose ties to AFP and Americans for Tax Reform and others and watched as they all began to line up behind the tea party movement. The big groups were late comers, for sure.
But all that aside, we can also discount this astroturf accusation by looking at the tea party groups today. Even still there is no national tea party group and the various local tea parties are not united as one. Each group across the land is autonomous and operate at various levels of effectiveness and organization. Some are deeply involved in their local politics, others are barely hanging together as a web-based communication tool.
Now comes this coffee party USA group claiming to be non-partisan. Frank Ross of BigGovernment.com did a great job proving that the creator of this “coffee party” business was really a big Obama operative. No thanks to the Old Media we quickly found out that Annabel Park, the coffee party originator, is an Obama operative and works for the New York Times as a “strategy analyst.” So, it was created by an Obama operative and member of the Old Media, but this was conveniently absent from early reporting on the coffee party phenomenon.
And now comes the first nationwide effort of this coffee party thingamajig and, surprise, surprise, it is also run by perpetual out-of-towners. Here in Chicago, the coffee party is not being run by anyone here — meaning it is being floated by outsiders, astroturfers, not grass roots locals like the tea party groups are.
Today I received this email alerting me to a “coffee party” kick-off event being held in Chicago where a local Chicagoan that stumbled upon the thing even admits openly that it isn’t being run by anyone local. In his personal email meant to drum up local support for this astroturf effort, the emailer (whose name I will not release) says, “Clearly, this organization is not led by someone from Chicago.” Why? Because the first event was planned to be held during the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade one of city’s biggest local party days. As the emailer scoffs, “Otherwise they would know that we’d all be at a huge parade on this day and instead of drinking coffee we’d be drinking green beer.”
As the emailer says, it is plain that no one from Chicago is actually part of this faux grass roots “coffee party” business or they’d have chosen a different day to try to kick-off their thingamajig. Chicago’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade is one of the biggest city wide party days of the year and no one will be much interested in politics that day, for sure!
In all, this is a classic example of outsider agitators, a perfect example of astroturfing. Will the Old Media take notice?

The original source of the Coffee Party email was my friend Tom Mannis at ChicagoNewsBench.com. Text of the email:

Subject: Coffee Party USA Kick-Off – Saturday, March 13
Friends and Colleagues (some of you may receive this email twice – my apologies),
I hope you all can join me at the Coffee Party USA kick-off on Saturday, March 13 at Charmers Cafe, 1500 W. Jarvis in Rogers Park – 10:30 AM. Clearly, this organization is not led by someone from Chicago. Otherwise they would know that we’d all be at a huge parade on this day and instead of drinking coffee we’d be drinking green beer.
So, let’s compromise… after a cup of coffee and civil dialogue on the important political issues in our communities we will go next door for one of those beers at the Poitin Stil – a quaint Irish Bar.
If you can’t make the coffee party at Charmers Cafe, join us for beers at xxxxxxxx.
The Mission of Coffee Party USA is to give voice to Americans who want cooperation in government and bring civility and open discussion to the national political debates that are dividing our communities and our country.
I have attached the press release and poster for this event. Below is an excerpt from the press release:
The Coffee Party movement gives voice to Americans who want to see cooperation in government, and welcomes everyone to the table. “We are purely grassroots movement, independent of any party, corporation, or lobbying organization. That is our strength and we plan to use it to facilitate a collaborative process that would encourage people to come together as a community, checking party affiliation at the door,” said Annabel Park, the founder of Coffee Party USA.

I love the eyes on the little girl in the pic they seem to say, "Go ahead punk lie to me make my day".
Does the coffee Party get its own page on Obamanzing for America?
and the band played on.an effort to distract from the bs in dc by a sycophantic political prostitute.coffee klatchers beware of how you are used by the msm to prop up a failing government.
I have a gut feeling about the Coffee Party, that it has been sitting on the burner to long and has that nasty scorched taste that makes you want to spew it out….in other words it will soon be pitched out because no one will really want any of that ole' nasty stuff anymore…
The sad thing is that there are people who will look at that little girl in the first picture and only see a "racist."
The left is sure entertaining.
They were caught flat footed a year ago by the Tea Party, and have been out of step and off balance ever since. Watching them is like watching someone break dance, or do the moon walk to country music. Somebody should sell tickets to their events. The simple fact is that the Tea Party is real, is genuine. The people are fired up.
What the left is trying to do is recapture it, or manufacture and duplicate a similar organization. They are simply phony.
Quoting Annabel Park sure nails the top-down nature of the coffee "party", and ties it irrevocably to the Obama gang. Her activists will infest and attempt to dominate every one of these gatherings, like the old Popular Fronts were all hijacked by Communists in the 1930s.
More than likely this is a resurrection of his multi-state 'caucus' tactics from his 2008 campaign, in which a lot of regular Democrats found themselves outmaneuvered by hyper-organizers from Chicago Central, and candidates like Hillary were made fools of.
Now – how much of the unspent 'stimulus' money is being invested by Obama & Co. into this astroturfed "coffee party", in their efforts to diminish the tea parties?
They have neither imagination nor originality, as always they look to pervert and mislead American patriotism. This is their M.O., they cannot come up with an original thought, so they look to use someone's inspiration as their own. How droll, and deceitful.
That’s funny! Washington has lit a fire under the American people, at least 70%, the other 30% are useless parasites aka “Coffee Party,” who cares. It is an imperative that these career statist marginalize the Tea Party, the classic technique of “divide and conquer,” ala Carville/Clinton’s attempt to isolate “leaders,” not going to work this time. Now that we have the enemy (statist) isolated, and in the open, it’s gonna be their political ass starting in 11/10.

Will the Southern Poverty Law Center investigate Coffee Party member for their affiliations with SEIU, a hate group with a history of attacking blacks?
Agree; My Tea Party has no "Leaders". I am my own "Leader' , we are "The People", Repubs, Dems & Independents who grew up in THIS Country, fought for this Country and Love this Country (Less some Politicians). Obama, his administration and his appointees appear to be against anything truly American. They are planning more damage (Cap & Tax, more & more regulation etc.) We Conservatives are a peaceful people but this present government is provoking Civil War (which they are preparing for to squash any insurrection with the National Guards and Homeland Security) They should not Underestimate us…………….The Unions have taken over the White House, Andy Stearn is the de-facto president and Obama is his assistant kneeling at his feet…Obama, the Buck stops at your Desk. You Nominated the incompentent Holder, Nepalitano et al…YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE…QUIT HIDING BEHIND RHAM, GIBBS AND AXELROD..You have betrayed the American People and embraced your Marxist, CORRUPT Friends and radicals. Just look at your Czars…2010 will apply the Emergency Brakes on your agenda..You are an incompetent failure and your "GIFT" is lying Bull$–t..
The coffee party was started by Annabelle Parks, big organizer for Obamao. SO it is no surprise that the mainstream media has jumped all over this story. What a bunch of tools!!! The propaganda coming from the media is so blatant, I cant even begin explain how outraged I am. I wish there was something we could do to get inside these media outlets and totally expose them. Hats off to Andrew and the BIG sites for doing all they do. I have a ten year old daughter, I constantly tell her there is a battle going for her mind. When she was born, I had no idea I would be having to deprogram her almost daily.
Naming Anabel Park as the founder immediately cancels the "coffee party" as a grassroots organization, and ties it irrevocably to Obama.
It looks like its meetings will all be convened and controlled by false-front 'activists', similar to those who hijacked the Democratic caucuses in many states during Obama's 2008 campaign. This looks like a repeat of the Popular Front organizations of the 1930s. Ostensibly they were wide and inclusive, uniting the people in democratic bliss against Hitler. In truth, they were all taken over by enforcers who hid their Communist puppet strings, but ensured that the organizations followed Comintern policies.
The problem with the "coffee party" succeeding as a Popular Front is that there is no major tyrant to unite them in opposition. Note to "coffee party" members: you already own him. All they have to oppose is the media image demonizing the tea parties, who make no policies, control no bureaus and dole out no subsidies.
Question for the "coffee party" (that's you, Annabel): How much funding is being skimmed off of the unspent billions of last February's 'stimulus' bill, to pay the travel costs and expenses of several thousand 'facilitators' and activists and commissars, to start up their local cells all over the country?
These "CoffeeKlatchers" are phony to to core …Equivalent to making a dress out of used coffee filters…Stitching has no integrity and does not hold together very well
If the papers/media in general, would start reporting the WHOLE story and the relevant facts of a news story, instead of cover-up propaganda, people would stop going to British news and the internet. …
NYT and WaPO and the rest, decides what is and is not news and the "take" of an issue according to the views of it's staff. Any honest reporter with half a brain could see what this is all about.
This "MUGWHOMP" coffee klatch movement IS astroturf…Hardly organic…
There is nothing more boring then constant lies, propaganda, and mis-"takes" on an issue…
People will not tolerate being lied to for very long. ..
Lies of omission are the worst kind of sins…
I saw this elsewhere, so not original…
Koffee Party Rules because Freedon and Liberty's NOT Our Cup of Tea…
"Koffee Klatchers Kongregation" would more aptly capture their bent, a mirror image of their bigoted spiritual cousins on the other ultimate extreme of the political hate spectrum. After all, they use pretty much the same tactics, don't they? Demonizing "the other," a broad base of ignorance about their subject matter, and willful disdain for basic morality by twisting the truth to justify their ends.

In 1964, John "Buck" Wilkin wrote the song, "GTO" (aka Lil' GTO) and presented it to Pontiac ad agency's head guy, James Wangers. Wangers scoffed at it and refused to consider it for their ad campaign. Wilkin formed "Ronny and the Daytonas" and recorded the surf-music sounding song himself. The song became a huge hit and boosted the band and the GTO to legend status. Later, Wangers attempted to ride the GTO wave by hiring "Paul revere and the Raiders" to record a GTO song, but it crashed and burned.
Point: You can't get anywhere when you copycat someone else's ideas.
The astroturfed "CODE BROWN" group can not come in – they are fake and boosted by Parks and her ObamaBot money machine. The horse is out of the barn…or should I say, the GTO has left the garage. It is loud, powerful and a huge distraction.
If they really wanted a good turnout in Chicago, they would have called it the Irish Coffee Party.
"Im a little tea partier… short and stout"
Are we legitimatizing them by commenting on them?
They are the definition of astro turf, which is why they will fail.
They will never get traction, they are obama's shills.
This is the same reason obama is failing his campaign was based on lies, Americans voted
for hope and change and are getting ripped off.
Think about the whole idea of the cpUSA it is offensive.
They think they can start a movement? Who is that stupid? They think we are.
And that is why the Tea Party has gained so much ground in a year.
~sigh~ I love redheads… oh, this is a politics thread, uh, I'll get back with something witty later.
God bless Andrew Breitbart. Conservatives need his "in your face" attitude.
They've got the full power of CNN promoting them. The exacte opposite of CNN's initial ignoring of, and then hostility to, the tea parties.
Progressives, populists, intellectuals, elitists, liberals, homosexuals, all these social/political groups pushing for a SociaIist America should be careful what they wish for.
Somehow they think a new SociaIist America will look to them as heroes and leaders, that they will reap the rewards of a government run utopia which will take care of their every need. They are useful idiots.
They really should study history and find out who will be rounded up and exterminated FIRST, pre-WWII Russia would be a good place to start. Social parasites, enemies of the people, government bureaucrats, minorities, deviants, rounded up and either shot or sent to the Gulag labor camps to die, about 20 million in all.
I'm guessing that your public indoctrination school education did not spend much time on that part of history, right? Other than a few rulers, SociaIism only allows silent, dumb workers.

The Instant Coffee Party (decaf)
I'm not too sure that the ICP(see above) wasn't purposefully planned to coincide with this popular Chicago celebration.
"…the first event was planned to be held during the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade one of city’s biggest local party days."
What better way to provide great cover for the lame turnout of the Barry Baristas. You get ready made crowds – just post a few sign holders in front and get great publicity photos. News anchors will already be out and about covering festivities.
Thatlittle girl is gorgeous.
That should be reason enough for US to want to be active.
You have to understand why the tea party is successful and this other nonsense can not be. The Tea party is and always has been about The Constitution and Individual Constitutional Rights. This gets people up and in your face when it is so obvious that the federal government is trying it's damndest to take these rights and Freedoms away. Just how much passion can you get out of trying to get people to protest for coming together as a community, Get the COMMUNITY as IN COMMUNISM, when the uncivil discourse comes from the source of the coffee cup party funders.
"The Constitution Can Not Defend Itself" It is up to "We the People" to do so and the Tea Party/Patriot Movement knows this.
This thing is like liberal talk radio. I predict it will quickly tank.

It appears I wasted half an hour of my time researching and writing a response to this article, as my every attempt to post it here is being deleted. What is going on?
We need a few of our own reporters putting up the same pictures, with the caption "CPUSA insults St Patrick's day."
The coffee party are so phony – while the tea party is a movement still seeking its focus, it is authentic and, hopefully, of a vitality that will change at least the incoming electoral cycle. While the coffee parties… beware of the faux libertarians populating them, they reek of a MoveOn.org manoevere set-up to siphon the anxieties that have brought the people to the tea party -
That email is fishy, Warner. I get the distinct impression its content was carefully crafted to make it appear the centralized leadership of the Commie Clatchers has less influence than it really does. Note how, after the extremely mild dismissive tone at the beginning of the email, the author goes on to sell the brand with what is obviously boilerplate copy.
Also, I find it very interesting the parallels between this Chicago event, and the "Coffee Party" covered by Andrew Marcus in [this] article. The St. Louis event detailed therein described a gathering at "Mokabe's," an establishment which lauds its close ties to the St. Louis lebsian(*) "community." I found references to the establishment [here] and [here] which tie both establishments, in a peripheral way, to the Chicago "ghay(*) community." Charmer's Cafe is owned by one Dan Sullivan, who previously owned a "ghay(*)" nightclub called Charmer's. It is not clear if he is the same [Dan Sullivan] who donated $500 to Obama's campaign. Poitin Stil is now in the space formerly occupied by the aforementioned Charmer's nightclub.

The listing of Annabel Park as 'organizer' is news enough that the coffee party is no such thing as a grassroots organzation, and is irrevocably tied to the perpetual Obama campaign.
The "coffee party" is no more than a false-front organization being created to oppose and dilute the tea parties. Much like the Popular Front organizations of the 1930s, it will be ultimately hijacked and controlled from Chicago Central by local or bused-in 'organizers' whose puppet strings lead to Obama, and whose expenses are paid by George Soros or the yet-unappropriated 'stimulus' funds left over from February 2009.
A real grassroots effort would include writing the meeting information on a paper napkin and passing it along to a friend, or a personal e-mail like this : Hey ____, the local Tea-Party group you've been hearing so much about is having a big gathering of people showing up at ____ on MM-DD-YY @ –:– am/pm. Want to go? Tell your friends!
An interesting video over at
http://gatewaypundit.firstthings.com/
gives an inside view of a first "coffee party" meeting at Potters Coffeehouse, where a top-down 'organizer' let by controlling the topics which she was writing on the blackboard, for later activism efforts by the collective group. Her veto power revealed the intent to prevent 'wrong' subjects being introduced by mere participants.

Republican groups were not behind it until they saw it and have now mostly co-opted them:
There's a major political fraud underway: the GOP is once again donning their libertarian, limited-government masks in order to re-invent itself and, more important, to co-opt the energy and passion of the Ron-Paul-faction that spawned and sustains the "tea party" movement. The Party that spat contempt at Paul during the Bush years and was diametrically opposed to most of his platform now pretends to share his views.

[...] in St. Louis, there was a small amount of leftist Astroturfing. The so called “coffee party” met for a bit of “latte liberal” whining. [...]
They went with Coffee Party USA so that they could keep using their CPUSA tote bags and mugs. That's the old Communist Party USA. These people will never be happy so long as you have a single dime of your own money.
….And the MSM takes one more step closer to the grave.
This all makes perfect sense if you stop and think about the kinds of people on both sides of this divide. The left is used to top down command, and thinks it's the only way to get anything done. They don't trust "the little people" and will always try to have things set up for them. The right doesn't like being bossed around, and doesn't automatically follow leaders just because they have become, through whatever arcane process, leaders. So, the left can't imagine a non-astroturf group doing anything on a large scale, and will, of course, make their own group in the very image of astroturf.
The best approach is to ignore them. Sure, the Old Media lapdogs will follow around an ACORN bus to protest at the homes of Wall Street execs, but didn't ACORN have to PAY people to ride the bus. And how many were there? A dozen? Who cares? Ignore them. They'll be brought down by internal apathy soon enough.
I saw a story on CNN about the Coffee Party, which told me that "it shares a lot with the Tea Party movement, but is interested in stressing 'civility'."
As stupid as it the report was — and filled with the typical "I'm cool because I'm still in college" crowd — I was genuinely surprised CNN admitted the Coffee Party was started by a former Obama operative. However, the story concluded that "that doesn't seem to be an issue."
I don't know which line is funnier/sadder/more ironic "Clearly, this organization is not led by someone from Chicago" or the one about "checking your political affiliation at the door".

"Coffee Party" seems an apt moniker for this bunch; the spiritual home of coffee drinkers in this country is Seattle, home of Starbucks and Seattle's Best, to name just two, and home of vast hordes of lefties.
During a visit to Seattle about 12 years ago, as I walked to a 7/11 near my hotel to get supplies at 1/4th the cost of the hotel's minibar, I had to wend my way through "night people" of various odd descriptions. At the 7/11, I encountered a couple of Seattle bicycle cops. When I asked them how come the city's nighttime sidewalks were so crowded with weirdos, they responded that Seattle's mayor would not allow them to arrest vagrants and other menaces to society unless they were in outright commission of a felony.
So, by my tortuous logic using this example, we can look forward to the Coffee Party enabling the night people to emerge from the national woodwork as the Chicago Mob increases its stranglehold on our collective lives, and filling our sidewalks with the detritus of their generally useless lives…at our expense.
Hard-working, honest Juan Valdez would be aghast at this hijacking of his image. I'm sure his burro would object as well since he must certainly have more common sense than the Coffee Klatch allegedly emerging from the grass roots.
PS: Visit the Coffee Party's website. The term "diverse" with its multiple variations peppers the site. "Diverse" has come to mean to me, "enabling various groups to pilfer my pockets."
I hope The Professor kept a note of that little girl's name. She looks like she'll amount to something one day. She's practically gone viral, and every time I see her I think of that nasty Sir Archie in Rob Roy saying, "She's a hater, that one."
I can imagine several politicians waking up in a cold sweat after seeing that face in their dreams. Oh, I like her.

Does this translate to "for people who want everyone to sit down so the steam roller can squash 'em?" I am waiting for the day when the infantile Progressives say something that means something. Or, I would love to see the Coffee drinkers actually filter what they are being told. Who would join a group with such a mission of nothingness?

so I am not onside with any particular party here. Instead, I am simply interested in raising the question of whether or not it is possible to control public opinion given the basic machinery of the internet. The most pressing pieces of information which the public is in need of are the methods by which this kind of control can be orchestrated. For example, our author here suggests that the coffee party is a PR campaign by an Obama "operative". Very cloak and dagger.
We are currently faced with an essentially technological question. If every piece of data on the internet can be immediately met with public scrutiny and rebuttal, how can public opinion be controled? If it can, then there is no reason to think that the tea party isn't also at risk.
