The media has been trying its hardest to spin this tough new Arizona immigration law for all it’s worth. It’s such a swarm of media agenda journalism that even liberal reporters who write about the travel industry are trying to demonize Arizona over it all.
We can see this in the facile reporting by USA Today’s travel reporter, Barbara De Lollis. Her story, “Arizona immigration law backlash? Traveler says state ‘is off my travel list for sure,’” is a screamer for the wild assumptions and unproved and unprovable assertions made in order to further the Old Media agenda.

De Lollis asserts that there is a “backlash” among travelers over the Arizona legislature’s decision to strengthen its immigration laws. She thinks that the tourist industry in the Grand Canyon State will find itself on the short end of the stick because of “the USA’s toughest immigration law.”
That is quite a claim, isn’t it? One would think that she’d have reams of evidence to prove her contention that Arizona’s tourist industry will be hurt by the immigration law, wouldn’t you? Maybe she has some major travel industry spokesmen or organizations saying Arizona is out? Perhaps she has a few large corporations or government agencies announcing travel bans? Maybe she has some survey from a respected group like Gallup, or some such polling group?

No, none of that. So what does De Lollis use to prove her case?
Twitter.
Yeah, Twitter. Twitter and a few comments on USA Today’s webpage.
Because a couple of people sent her a Tweet that they won’t go to Arizona, why that’s enough for Ms De Lollis to claim that there is a “backlash” against Arizona’s travel industry! De Lollis also pointed to a USA Today online story that had a whole 750 replies, some of which also said they’d never go to Arizona.
So, in a nation of over 300 million people in a world of billions of people, one or two Twitter messages and a couple of comments on a USA Today webpage was enough for De Lollis to declare that there is a “backlash” against Arizona.
Now, how many of these Twitterers ever went to Arizona anyway or how many of her USA Today webpage commenters ever would go, immigration bill or no, is another question. But even if every single one of them were to cease any plans to go to Arizona what scientific statistics could be gained from this? Not a thing, really. The number would be too minuscule to bother with as evidence of anything.
This is the way the Old Media fans the flames of a story to spin it to their agenda:
De Lollis created a false premise in which she wanted to believe. She then found a few stray comments from people who represent nothing greater than a momentary opinion, anecdotal evidence which, we all know, is no evidence at all. And then she spun that anecdotal “evidence” into “proof” of her false premise.
Voila, now we have a “backlash against Arizona’s travel industry”!

Airizon's new law won't stop me from visiting and spending some tourist dollars there. Other than being represented by JohnMc, it's looking better and better. Hopefully the JohnMc issue will be resolved this November.
Fewer illegals AND fewer liberals. AZ is sounding better all the time as a vacay spot!
I had no plans to travel to Arizona. Now I do… Write a story on that "Frontlash on Arizona's tourist trade; people flock to border state to not get beheaded by a cartel member and to hear English spoken once again"
So people won't come to Arizona because now there will be less illegals thus less crime? Some times liberals need to think before they speak…excuse me, all the time liberals need to think before they speak.
Backlash? I’ll be visiting Arizona more often now.
Bravo!
Arizona, my home by the way, is in big big trouble. Why, I predict total a financial disaster in the tourism industry from all the people who say they will cancel their AZ travel plans. Oh wait, most of them were saying that for liberal street cred and had no plans of traveling here anyway. And the ones who need to come here for business reasons will continue to do so, and simply lie about it when they get back home. I guess we are not in trouble after all.
Some times liberals need to think before they speak…
Yeah, about that. If they did they wouldn't say much, which is why they instead feel and then speak.
I bet Arizona tourism picks up, business picks up and they experience a population surge of real Americans, not people who sneak in in the middle of night and steal our jobs and property and kill us if we are not careful.
Now we need other states with balls to follow suit. I can envision two Americas – Obama's and Ours. And Obama's will not be able to tax ours or even enter it. After all, he has never proved he was born here, has he?
Time to go to AZ once they start enforcing the law. People will feel much safer.. I think I'll make my reservations for the fall!
NEWS FLASH!
The president of Mexico has announced he will be moving to Los Angeles so that he can be closer to his people…!
C'mon Mr. Huston don't be so hard on Babs. After all she is just following the example of Mr. Hearst when he said, "You furnish the pictures, I'll furnish the war"
This seems to be standard operating procedure for the establishment media, set the direction for the masses to follow, in spite of the facts.
You know, I've said in the past that South Dakota, when it passed the most restrictive abortion law in the country (before the voters overturned it), should target-market to Christian families in the face of the usual moonbats who scream "Boycott!" at this type of stuff. Lets everyone show the world that there are, indeed, underserved markets for this sort of thing.
Methinks Arizona should try marketing its state to Texas and the South.
Where was all this outrage after innocent Arizona farmer Rob Krentz was murdered by illegals who invaded our country? Liberals care more about people being "offended" than a man being murdered. That's how disgusting some liberals are.
It's certainly a great time to purchase a home in metro Phoenix, that's for sure.
Oklahoma has had tough illegal immigration laws for some time now. I notice Obama made no mention of it, that I can find, in any campaign speech or since the Arizona law came to be and I have to wonder why. That's right there isn't enough of a Hispanic vote here to make it worth the Democrats time. Right now we are trying to pass a law that will track how much money we spend on illegals in our public schools, crazily enough the teachers union seems to be opposed.
Anything that makes the state safer is good for tourism. If they took the time to research the issue and the law they would see that it is intended to help minimize the drug and human trafficking and help the resident's remain safe in their homes. what a bunch of idiots that don't take the time to research the facts.
Isn't Hollywood all about "human trafficking awareness". Just not if laws are actually enforced to prevent it I guess.
My cousins daughter is graduating from Arizona State in mid-May. I wasn't going because I graduate on May 15th. Now I'm leaving after my own graduation and heading STRAIGHT to Phoenix.
A whole bunch of Texans will be GOING to ARIZONA!
YEA!!! Can't wait!
Backlash? If so, that would mean tourism possibilities for Somolia, they have alot of shooting there. The whole point for the need of such a law was the crime being committed by illegals (not just the being illegal thing). Reminds me when my daughter was mugged, the defence lawyer grilled her on why she did'nt cross the street when she saw the two chicanos, to which she said if she crossed the street everytime she saw a chicano she would never get home.
Wow, pulling out the oldies but goodies. It still gets a chuckle
lol! Non-crisis averted! Let's PARTY!!!
I've never been to the Grand Canyon. This summer sounds like a fine time to remedy that!
So I was shopping at several stores today, including Ross (clothing store) where lots of people of Hispanic origin shop. Anyway…looked around, lots of people speaking Spanish, smiling, going about their business. No wild eyed fear apparent. This whole backlash thing is ridiculous. I have lived here over 45 years and EVERYONE I know is for a secure border and that includes my friends whose parents or grandparents are from Mexico.
Those of you who don't live in the southwest or California have no idea how much the illegal population has changed this area…and not for the better! I am not suggesting that it isn't a warm and friendly culture…it is. But they really have a completely different outlook on things. They DO CONSIDER THEMSELVES MEXICAN…their loyalty is first and foremost to family and then Mexico. The United State is merely a place to make money to send home and to have babies so that they can get the 'aid to dependent children' that it then entitles them to. They really don't get the rule of law and why it is so important. !
They do not think twice of not having auto insurance or having their kids born into our hospitals without paying a dime. They leave trash at their feet…it is so apparent when they gather at the parks…the notion that one leaves a place better than they found it is completely lost on them. They are very family oriented which is a great thing…but that means they will protect their gangbanger children no matter what…Also, a great number really do not value the importance of education and don't see it as a negative that their young daughters date men easily 5 and 10 years older than themselves. Girls getting pregnant at 14-16 is not a shocker at all to see in the hispanic community.
I think, however, the thing that bothers me the most here is that many everyday Americans really do not understand how their pocket books and their quality of life is affected by illegal immigration. The worst offenders and the upper class ones who live in the gated and nice parts of town…they do not have to see all the destruction that is caused by the many illegals who turn to crime, vandalism and just plain nuisance activities. Somehow, they feel guilty about whatever they feel guilty about and so don't want to appear 'mean' because most of us just want a secure border and for the rules to be followed regarding LEGAL IMMIGRATION
This is what the media DOES. Just like they largely manufactured the outrage about the Iranian elections.
Old but good still…
Some of the saddest and truthful social commentary comes at us like a freight train from the comedy circuit.
Many comics are hardcore leftists but many are straight up realists that see the obvious for what it is, sad…
exactly. My Mexican Momis ALL FOR secure borders and enforcing OUR LAWS. It's liberal moonbats that want "open borders" – until they get robbed.
I have been planning for years to move to Arizona when I retire, but recently have had second thoughts due to all the issues with the drug wars in Mexico and the crime occurring in Arizona as a result. Now that this legislation has passed and been signed into law, I can once again dream of the day when I will happily retire in Arizona.
By the way, you know how hypocritical the media is? Last Sunday while the pro illegal immigration protesters were at it at the Capital, I saw video tape of them throwing full water bottles and trash at the cops. I have no idea if anyone was arrested but there was NO REPORTING OF THIS AT THE AZ REPUBLIC and did not see it reported any where else except, of course, on FOX. The Media and the ass Bill Clinton have made a big deal about the 'angry'? white protesters of the Tea Parties….but I have yet to see anything like it and there has been no arrests for violence as far as I know.
All of my friends are NOW boycotting Mexico, Washington DC, California, and New York, and spending our vacations at the beautiful Arizona Grand Canyon, and touring the beautiful countryside with friendly natives. No need to waste time and money on the bankrupt states and locations without morals or fiscal responsibilties. I want nothing to do with Mexico.
I am going to visit Arizona this year, it will be nice to be among Real Americans!!!!! Arizonians stick to your guns. That cowboy figure, like George Bush (as a war president he was good, economics ahhhhh) and Ronnie Reagan, they say what they believe, stand up for what is right, make sure no one messes with their family, believed in independence, and kicked ass. Oh yeah!!! Now those are my kind of peeps!!!
RIGHT ON!!!!
Last night on FOX, Laura Ingrahm was interviewing that idiot of a mayor (of Phoenix), Phil Gordon about the law. He had the nerve to say that it reminded him of Nazi Germany and the Jim Crow South. Laura challenged him somewhat and he backpedaled a little….but, the fact remains that this dork, who runs a city, really has no clue what real racisim looks like. These people scare me!!!!
KENYA, MEXICO, MIDDLE EAST, SOMALIA, RUSSIA, SAME BUNCH OF AH LOSERS ANYWAY….WHO NEEDS KENYA OR ANYONE FROM KENYA…OR MEXICO EITHER IF THEY HAVE NO RESPECT NOR ADMIRATION FOR THE USA.
Think Obama and the Democrats would EVER ALLOW A HISPANIC TO GET ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE USA…THINK AGAIN….THEY JUST WANT THE ILLEGALS TO GET CITIZENSHIP AND FORCE THEM TO JOIN THE UNIONS TO GET MORE UNION DOLLARS AND MAKE WAGES TO UP TO GET MORE TAX MONEY.
maybe we will do that Cub road trip now, too…
Plus we have friends in Scottsdale. And it's nice there. So, we say keep it up- keep demonizing law abiding, taxpaying US citizens and we might just spend even more there.
Did cancel trips to Wisconsin and Massachussetts, though… vote with your feet- and your wallet…
My husband asked me about 9 mnths ago what I would think about moving to Phoenix if he got a job at the university there. I said "no way in hell". Kidnappings, murders, burglaries by illegals, and citizens are the ones who get in trouble for protecting their property. F that.
Now, if there is real immigration reform (i.e., if Arizona is now going to enforce the existing immigration laws and protect the state interest by protecting its citizens), people will be more inclined to move there and maybe even vacation there.
San Francisco has launched a boycott.
Perhaps if they had been diligent in dealing with illegal aliens in San Fran the three Bologna men would still be alive.
Let's hope Arizona authorities don't look to California as a model of enforcement.
Ya, the first thing I did was check the schedule to see if the D-Backs would be in town, I'd like to go to a game at the BOB but alas, they're on the road that weekend. Drat!
Says the man who's never been to Iran.
Iran's government is an Islamic thugocracy that's been stripping away any freedoms they've gained since the fifties, from the right to consume alcohol to the right of women not to be stoned in a barbaric 7th century fashion.
The people of Iran had their election stolen, and their ability to communicate with the outside world cut off by the Iranian government.
Why let some little moral notion like the truth stand in the way. I think I may just take the family to Arizona for vacation to show my support.
On the first day this was announced, an AZ congressman called for a boycott of his own state! Not worth mention? Also Mexico just announced a warning about visiting AZ, saying citizens may be harassed.
The president denounced the law, it's all the news has been talking about for days. I'd say this was a backlash.
It sure will be!
My personal favorite Lefty was George Carlin:
(Strong Language and off topic but funny as…) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5Miv4NHsDo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvgN5gCuLac http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vmknnXoOJk&fe... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxmE2qMbYRU&fe...
I will be in Arizona this Thursday and Friday for my graduation. They have much better schools than California, that's for sure! (I currently live in San Diego, soon to be Arizona/Texas/Utah)
They truly are better people than those on the coasts, they are straight forward and are not insecure at all. You can talk to anyone there, meeting great people is so easy, women have really personalities, etc.
And CNN had their little interview with an Army soldier, with their own twist.
No big. Just have id with you.
But hey, that's too simplistic for progressives. That involves responsibility.
True Mexican immigrants who wanted to be American are against these Illegals as well, I have met, and work with many true Americans who gained citizenship legitimately and understand what qualities they moved here for and want to protect.
Again, I agree. I have worked in Restaurants in Arizona and California and I have met many illegals who gloat about their illegal documentation and about how they send so much home, but never anything about loving America or wanting to be an American.
San Diego is the worst because of the Illegals, when they have events down here there is trash everywhere, our ocean is so bad down here because of them. It is not their country so they don't care. When the Tea Partiers have events they have cleaned up after themselves.
I lived in Tempe, and you just don't go to Phoenix, it is another crime-ridden city, and obviously that mayor does a terrible job.
Tucson!!
Fewer Illegal Aliens, Reduction in the criminal element, Fewer left wings nut cases planning to stay away. Looks like I am calling Arizona's Bureau of Tourism and planning my vacation.
They already explained that they only question those who are suspected of a crime or committed a crime. Since most crime in the SouthWest is by illegals, Arizona realized that they had to do something about it.
I was just thinking of the GC myself, saw it 50 years ago, it's time to go back. Need to see if it's got
deeper or wider, might even ride a mule to the bottom this time. Last time my brother and I had our
dad convinced to ride down, but my mom nixed the whole deal.
Not only do I intend to vacation in AZ this year, but my company, at my behest, intends to hold our annual conference in your great state, too! Thank you for your bigoted and slanted bias, Obama, Sharpton, Jackson, MSM, et al.–and to all Arizonians for standing tall and upholding the laws of the US., even if our government does not!
Lopez Portillo lives in San Diego.
My state of Oklahoma is going to try for the same bill or something like it. Need more to do the same. Could you ever imagine a president going after a state for trying to do something to take care of its citizens that the feds won't do, and him basically siding with the lawbreakers? That's the way it is in Obamaworld. The regular world is now upside down.
Everybody is talking about how great it's gonna be for the tourism industry but i think you are forgetting something very important that's bound to drop:
THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE!
Being the libertarian i am, i must confess that i am for immigration. I believe it takes a special someone to pick up and search for prosperity in a strange land of strange cultures and that those special someones have contributed and will continue to contribute alot to what makes us great, Having said that, I am much more supportive of states rights. Go AZ
Y'all are worried about the wrong border! It's the damned Canadians with their bad knees and missing teeth from hockey coming south to swamp our emergency rooms that's the REAL problem! We have the greatest health care in the world (Rush Limbaugh), and those little commies on skates are trying to ruin it!! They don't even have Nascar, for F&^%sakes!!!
YES! Tourism will be impacted and it will be measurable too.
Why?
It's called 'summer' and means temperatures of over 100 degrees! Keeps the tourists (we call them 'snow birds' or worse) away this time of the year every year.
ATTENTION ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS!
City Attorney Dennis Herrera and the Sanctuary City of San Francisco Welcomes you!
FREE HOUSING! FREE EDUCATION! FREE HEALTH CARE! FREE LUNCH! FREE MONEY!

Illegal Immigrants will get Health Care… http://usataxpayer.org/?0072194997
no matter. Have fun and spend some dough. Arizona's got it coming to them…
"The president denounced the law, it's all the news has been talking about for days. I'd say this was a backlash."
Commiebammy says something, and it counts as a "backlash?"
If the illegal Kenyan doesn't like it, I'm all for it.
The Arizona Law IS the Backlash! The backlash is against the Progressive attempts to stuff ballot boxes with millions of purchased votes from amnesty-granted Latino voters.
It is working already! All those people coming to protest Az (Al Sharpton etc.) will be spending money and staying somewhere….ha gotcha, thanks for the business!
You mean kidnappings and drug gangland infested Phoenix doesn’t scare off travelers, and boarder protection does? You have got to be kidding!
How stupid.
Alaska has had countless "tourism boycotts" due to wolf control hunts, but the real numbers, the number of tourists that come up during the "boycott" does not drop.
It's a lot easier, and cheaper to say you intended to spend some money on something but did not, than it is to actually spend the money.
Make no mistake, the dimokkrats are upset because of the loss of potential voters (as soon as they cram amnesty down our throats). In fact, we should stop calling them illegal aliens and refer to them as "undocumented democrats", since that is their end game anyway.
My wife and I took a road trip last year which took us from southern NM to Tombstone, AZ (which I loved) and up through that great state to Monument Valley. I had already planned to go back and now I think I'll bump up the return trip to this year and spend as much money as I can – kind of a thank you for caring more about this country than the Marxists in power.
Gee, I'm going to try to figure out something to offend people living in Frisco so they stay out of Alaska.
"Backlash" among the self appointed "elite"? Oh, that's soooo impressive. (snicker)
An AZ congresscritter calls for a boycott of AZ? LOL, is that an excuse for going on another junket to some swanky resort with scantily clad women bouncing around?
Hey, Dork, they head for Arizona so they can cross the border for the cheap medical and dental care in Mexico.
Google it.
Why don't we just stop everyone? After all 19% of illegal immigrants are either Asian or European, we certainly can't discriminate, right? If you do not have proper documentation you will go straight to jail, I mean, isn't that the way the Nazi's handled the Jews? If we want a totalitarian state, we should do it right!!
What about Greg Gutfeld. What should we do about him?
I live in Arizona, and I don't plan on leaving for quite some time, if ever. I'm not a racist; I don't care if all of Mexico wants to move here…as long as they are willing to become U.S. citizens, learn to speak English and acclimate into our culture. For every person whining about how non-citizens aren't treated like citizens (oh, horror!) there is one illegal immigrant getting free money or free surgery or something doled out to them because of their "anchor babies," or the fact that hospitals can't turn you away if your life is in danger, regardless of whether you are able to pay. It would be unethical for hospitals to behave otherwise, so the state's remedy is: Just keep 'em out. They don't have to pay us back if they can't get here in the first place. You want this not to happen? What have you done about it? If you are so passionate, where's the money? That's all it takes, folks. Not being callous, just calling it like it is. If you want to make sure these people can receive health care for free, set up a charity, collect soda cans, get another job and donate the money…do something to make it better. Otherwise, just kindly shut up. When the state puts forth a solution, that means that you didn't do anything to keep it from happening in the first place. The state does what it has to to see to its responsibilities. It's not the legal responsibility of the State of Arizona to care for sick illegal immigrants, whether they're from Mexico, Canada, or anywhere else. The legal responsibilities of Arizona are to its own citizens, because that's what the institution of the state is there for. That's how it's supposed to work. Arizona does not have the resources to provide for its citizens and the citizens of a neighboring country, nor should it be expected to. Do you think if I hurt myself and went to Mexico for surgery that I'd be able to leave without paying? Not bloody likely. And don't get me started on the murders and other crimes that never get to trial because the defendant fled across the border, or the poor Mexicans who get locked in a semi trailer and left to die in the August sun by some coyote trying to make some fast money, or the scores of illegals who die in the desert from exposure every year because they didn't have enough water. Come on, Mexico, haven't heard anything from you, what do you have to say about it? Oh, telling your citizens not to come here? Fine with me. Maybe you should have thought of that a few years ago.
Can´t believe how many ignorant racist people comment on this page! No wonder America is having trouble with it´s economy! It´s you ignorant people worried about the wrong issues. Why don´t you guys get educated and hope that the economy does get better so you guys don´t have to become immigrants yourself, or how about taking action on dealing with global warming instead of fighting on who belongs where… We might not even be here within the next few years! Come on people! Worry about on how to become a better America. Study some economics, get educated on immigration, get a life & stop being a racist america, after all we are all descendents of immigrants. I Love America, proud to be an American citizen and I would hate for America to have more economic problems because of ignorant people like most of you!

Yipes!
Some of those not-real-Americans voicing doubts about the bill include Karl Rove and Jeb Bush and Tom Tancredo. Who are you gonna trust?
Commenting on: Now we need other states with balls to follow suit. I can envision two Americas – Obama's and Ours. And Obama's will not be able to tax ours or even enter it. After all, he has never proved he was born here, has he?
Only 2 Americas ? We'd have to have a lot more to accomodate all the "hyphen – Americans" who don't want to assimilate into the US culture. Chicago can have the option of becoming the capital of the doctrinally-pure Progressive Amerika ( they can't have our spelling ) complete with a pre-existing political machine and an "entitled" population for King O to rule.
I am vacationing in Arizona this year. So there! Trip is already booked!
If you don't agree with them, they call you "ignorant". That is very tiresome. This is the way a third grader handles a discussion.
Boring.
I know a few people on LJ that I at least used to respect have said they're avoiding Arizona from now on–those who have kids are going to teach them that Arizona is a racist state or something. I stopped paying attention when I saw the Obama icons that most of the commenters had…
If it was anyone but Hayworthless. We know too much about him around AZ.
Most people outside of Phoenix know Phil Gordon is a weenie.
Even more illegals
I'm a West Texan that had a reason to go to Phoenix, but wasn't going to go. Plans have CHANGED! I'm all in, can't wait.
From there – VEGAS BABY!!! (I figure I'll only graduate from skool {hee hee} twice or maybe three times)
Come on down! We have some pretty good Mexican food restaurants here!
I've already planned a road trip for this summer. I'm going to be driving my big honkin' SUV around the country to celebrate my retirement. I'm making a stop in Nogales, AZ to order a custom made pair of cowboy boots at Paul Bond's and another stop at the Grand Canyon, as I pass through the great state of Arizona.
That congressman obviously doesn't represent the 70% of the state that wants this.
Really, Arizona, stick to your guns! If San Francisco wants to boycott your beautiful state, more power to you ….!!! You have the right to defend yourselves when the Feds haven't been very helpful. Lots of Americans will visit Arizona because we agree with you!!
Yeah, you're right, we are all descendants of immigrants. Mine, however, were LEGAL immigrants, you turd. And take your "global warming" hysteria and move to the Arctic circle, if you're so concerned. There is NOTHING you can do about the globe warming. It has happened throughout the Earth's geological history. And I will fight anyone who wants to destroy the rule of law which has made this country the best place/time to live in the history of mankind.
FRONTLASH is more like it — the AZ law is the same as the federal law. Only difference is that the state of AZ will enforce their own law. It costs the state of AZ $1.3 billion to keep up the illegals in that state alone.
That violates the civil rights of the legal people in the state by depriving them of social services, like health care, that have to be rationed.
The new law provides the cops some additional means of dealing with a situation that's out of hand already. First, it only applies to places where someone is already stopped or a police call or where a crime is apparently being committed. I lived in Phx a year, about 25 years ago, and crime was WAY out of control back then. I can't imagine how much worse it is now. It's going to take more than just this little administrative and law enforcement change to "fix" Phoenix, but I do applaud the state for making a good effort. This will help, but it is definitely not the whole cure for crime in Phx.
The only tourist boycott that will affect AZ are the ones from south-o-da-border, amigos. And that be a good thing.
Actually, going through the article, there was never any claim that Arizona would face a widespread tourism backlash. The article asked the question, but made no actual general assertion beyond the internet quotes.
If Sheriff Joe turned his prison into a convict zoo, tourism would increase tenfold. Imagine going into the prison and buying food out of a vending machine to feed the convicts?
How about coyote safaris? Groups of tourists with night vision goggles get into jeeps to see the illegals in their natural habitat. What could be more green?
Now that's funny, I don't care who you are, that's funny!
