This is the chubby face of tyranny. A Michigan state senator has introduced an Orwellian bill that would provide for the licensing of journalists. There is no doubt that this thing is aimed squarely at delegitimizing the New Media, silencing bloggers, and creating a protected class of state approved “journalists.”
State Senator Bruce Patterson is the brains behind this flouting of the U.S. Constitution and outrageously enough, this Patterson fellow claims to be a “constitutional lawyer.” Pair him with the “constitutional scholar” we have as president and we have a matched set of revisionists out to steal as much power for themselves as one can find in any tinpot dictatorship! Even more ridiculously, this mustachioed villain is a Michigan Republican, proving that this sort of megalomania infests both sides of the aisle.

So what is this licensing deal supposed to do for us, the stupid people not able to figure out which end is up with current events, anyway? According to Patterson we can’t get “good information” any more because of the proliferation of new sources of info. But not to worry, nanny Patterson is here to save the day and he’ll selflessly take it upon himself to determine what news source is a “legitimate media source.” What could possibly go wrong?
“Legitimate media sources are critically important to our government,” he told Fox News. “We have to be able to get good information. We have to be able to rely on the source and to understand the credentials of the source.” Big Brother Patterson is trying on those iron boots and he thinks he looks good in them apparently.
Prospectively approved “journalists” — read: news folks that will say kind things about Patterson — will have to provide our caring and concerned Wolverine State government with the following:
- “Good moral character” and demonstrate they have industry “ethics standards acceptable to the board.”
- Possession of a degree in journalism or other degree substantially equivalent.
- Not less than 3 years experience as a reporter or any other relevant background information.
- Awards or recognition related to being a reporter.
- Three or more writing samples.
This bill makes perfect sense, of course. If you’re Fidel Castro.

Fortunately, the rest of the Michigan Senate thinks Patterson is an idiot because not one other Senator of either party is willing to co-sponsor Fidel Patterson’s un-American attempt at state control of the media.
Even if the tubby retiring Senator was sane, nice as pie, and completely trustworthy to be the sole adjudicator of just what constitutes a “legitimate media source,” we as a free people could never trust the next political hack that might step into Patterson’s iron booties in order to decide what sort of journalism will be “allowed” by the state.
Imagine if Bill Clinton, he of the laments about the “great right wing conspiracy,” was the man responsible to decide what is “legitimate” under a Patterson-like media licensing law? Do you think Drudge would have ever been able to break the Monica Lewinsky story in such a climate? Or do you think, rather, that Drudge would currently be sitting next to captured al-Qaeda terrorists in some dark hole in the foreign camp he was “rendered” to by Mr. “I fell your pain”? In fact, one rather imagines that Drudge would be in a Democrat provided for cell right next to Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity even as William F. Buckley had become a long ago forgotten victim of the “journalist licensing” gulag!
In any case, we will be seeing this sort of nonsense more and more as the new media gets stronger and more vital. Government thugs like Bruce Patterson will continue to try and find ways to destroy the new media and will continue to dream of the day when they can control every word that we hear from the media, new or old.

We Americans need to keep a constant vigil against these sort of anti-American, tyrannical usurpations of our right to free political speech. Regardless of what party label this sort of menace hides behind, we must always defeat it lest we lose our God-given liberty.
But I have to say, this is almost like a backhanded compliment. After all, if the new media is vexing comrade Pattersoninski this much, we must be having an effect. Right folks?

Michigan, the Lost Land of Islam…needs an enema of Limbaugh…how does it feel to witness the death of Constitutional Governance? Not good? Then let this AzzzzWagg CarpHole hear from you…hell no.

This is a Republican? What the hell is wrong with Michigan?
If anyone needs to be vetted for "good moral character" how about politicians?
Obviously we are having an effect. Please, let him know yourself what you think of his grand plan.

Progressivism affects both parties. It's way worse with the Dems, but as you can see here, Republicans have their fair share. Teddy Roosevelt was a progressive Republican, so is John McCain. This is not a new thing, but one we have to keep an eye on. Like a lot of people say, watch out for the RINO's.

That darned pesky 1st Ammendment! How in the heck are tyrants supposed to rule over us if we still have freedoms of speech? I hope that one day, when we're in line waiting for our rations of government cheese and dry (used) tube socks, he is in front of me.
Then I can slap him in the back of the head!
I don't care who supports or introduces legislation like this it all leads to the same place, big ovens full of people.
If politicians succeed in passing this type of legislation there will eventually be only two classes of citizens left in America, those inside the ovens and those filling them.
If you live in Michigan, please get rid of this traitor to the people of America in November!
Your life "may" literally depend on it!

R I N O !!! / Progressive!!!
No true conservative thinks this way and we should all work overtime to retire this turd in November!
We must get our information from statist approved news outlets. The beast (government) republican or democrat will struggle, and lash out for it’s survival, it’s like watching Meet the Press yesterday, E. J. Dione, David Brooks, and David Gregory supposedly having a opposing views…please. The message must be controlled, after all how can we possibly know what’s good for us. Our government is out of control and needs it’s wings clipped starting in 11/10!
As a technicality, the Constitution regulates the power of the federal government, not the states. When it refers to "congress' in the fist amendment, it is referring to the federal legislature. Just as it states congress cannot make a national religion or prohibit the free exercise of it, all the states at the time had state religions. The amendments were passed to preserve states rights. It has since been determined that the BIll of Rights extends to the states, but it wasn't so in the beginning. Not defending the halfwit state senator, I'm just sayin'. Licensing journalists is a bad idea on several levels. On the other hand, we license ministers and gun owners. We ought not be doing that, either.
The arguments against licensing journalists apply equally well to the licensing requirements for other professions. Most or all should be eliminated.
Just a thought. . . . maybe we could license politicians. . . .
Is it just me or does this RINO look like Sgt Schultz? "I know NOTHING!"
Apparently he marches like him.
There are "over educated idiots" on both side of the aisles. Points well taken concerning "licensing". As with most licence issues, it has everything to do with revenue and little to do with protecting consumers. If there is a supposed seperation on church and state, why is there a required licence? If we are free to ingage in trade why do we need a business licence? If we have the right to work, why do we have to join a union? It goes on an on, the bottom line, as always……….follow the money.
Be vewy vewy quiet……It's RINO season………
No. He does not.
John Banner was an Austrian Jew, forced to flee to the U.S. in 1940. He served in the USAAC during the war.
His character regularly expressed disdain for Hitler and Nazism during the show. For all his uniform, his efforts regularly helped the POWs.
The character and the actor behind the character both marched in a far different manner from this 1st Amendment trashing expletive.
Ive often wondered what BOZO looked like without his makeup—-Thanks for clearing that up!
Capt. Kangaroo has been found!

I agree that a "journalist" should at least have a degree in journalism, but the ideal of allowing a buffoon with a Rip Taylor mustache determine the "legitimacy" of the journalist makes my skin crawl.
Incidentally, I believe Anderson Cooper's degree is in Political Science, which means he'll be prohibited from practicing journalism in Michigan.
Here is what we do.
Devise a TEST for all State / Federal congressional members to determine eligibility to serve the people. Base the test on knowledge of American history / the Constitution / Bill of Rights……
They must pass the test with 100% score or go back to selling cars and vacuum cleaners…
(apology to real salespeople.)
Wouldn't it be funny to see how many absolute dumb asses are in politics…
Stuff like this only show how desperate the Ruling Class are to keep thier power.
This IDIO(T)LOGUE, needs to be shackled, just like he proposes to do to so many aware Americans!!! Invasion of your body, controlling YOUR (Unofficially authorized) tongue, while theirs is free to wag!!!
The character protrayed started out as a stupid bully Nazi and evolved into what you say. Just to clarify for those who want to get the whole series on DVD.
The only purpose the present journalism degree (edit, add) _course_ serves is to provide skills at writing. It is otherwise similar to a "degree" _course_ from a madraas.
Hey! Mr,Whipple. 1st amendment – READ IT!
What a ASSCLOWN
LOL!!! (sold cars for many years!)
We who read, think and post, already have a license to journal ~~ it's The Constitution of the United States and attendant Bill of Rights…..
Does a madrass "education" prepare one for Occidental, Columbia (allegedly) and Harvard (where though "one" is president of the Harvard Law Review, "one" NEVER seems to write anything?)
Just wondering.
Can anyone be certain that person is not Silas Legree????
Nice moose stash.
When does this idiot come up for re-election?
I'm sure there are still good people in MI that do not wish to live under the boot heel of Govt.
234 Thumbs Up!
(One for each year of our independence.)
madrass
Isn't that a tropical cocktail?
I have a tropical cocktail degree
can I now be a journalist at the Daytwa fwee prace????
I say we out-source 'em to a call center in India.
I left Michigan unwillingly 3 years ago, due to job loss. While I miss my friends and the spectacular Michigan summers, I don't miss idiots like this guy. He conveniently forgot that controlling journalism is controlling freedom of the press.
He probably got an F in constitutional law in law school.
Yes!
Possibly, but along with licensing, spay and neuter so they don't breed so much.
This is a call to arms (pens?) to all pamphleteers.
That's the guy!!…he was on an old episode of Gunsmoke, selling snake oil from a tattered covered wagon. Too many generations of Union mentality…
I would like to introduce the US Truth & Polygraph Debates Act of 2010.
Laws are weapons use by politicians against the people, as this law clearly demonstrates. Others, how about that tax law they wanted to pass against bankers bonuses? The Constitution was designed by our Founders as a shield against these weapons. The progressives long range agenda has been to remove our shield of protection under the guise of a living, evolving document. Once that shield is been removed we are lost. Unfortunatly our shield has been gouged, dented, rusted, and weakened for decades. I think it's only a mater of time before all protections from government are gone and we'll be subject to the whim of the privilaged few.
I have a journalism degree which led me to understand that I didn't need one.
Then the only shield we'll have left is the people of this country. Which, in my humble opinion, is far stronger than the Constitution.
Just a thought. . .
The bottom picture is what IS going to happen. We will have to forcibly remove all the traitors in DC if we do not want to become their slaves. That is my opinion and if we don't all that fought for us that we remember on this day will have died for Nothing. Seems like the military brass have also become limp dicked. They swore to uphold the Constitution and are just standing by watching it be destroyed. To my father who fought in WW11 and passed last year I say. I miss you dad but am glad you are not here to see the bastards who are our rulers now. They make me sick.
Don't make me send Rep. McCotter over there to thump your head…Wise up!

Bill of Rights violations should be prosecuted as treason.
I would like to punch the cherubic buffoon right in the nose; he has that kind of face. The voters in Michigan need to punch him right out of office.
Fudd,or for that matter Bawney Fwank, would say "Wino" season.
A degree in any field is no guarantee of competence or lack of bias.
Remember the old days of journalism? A lot of great reporters were guys who came back from the war and needed something interesting to do, so many became journalists. It involved a lot of footwork, asking a lot of questions, and digging out a lot of facts. Proper English and punctuation was for the editors to worry about. Gathering facts was what counted. Even in the one journalism course I took in 1973, we were confined to simply gathering who, what, when and where, and leave the why to quotes from officials. But there was a term being bandied about at that time called New Journalism, or 'the New J' as hipsters called it, and it's premise was that there was no such thing as objective reporting, so trying was futile and a waste of time. This was emanating from places like Columbia School of Journalism. Sad to see that it became the guiding philosophy of journalists, who came to see their role as changing the world and being part of the story, rather than objectively reporting events. And once Woodward and Bernstein were made rockstars for bringing down Nixon, reporters became crusaders looking to make a name. I don't see how a degree in journalism nor a license will change any of that.
i think it's wise for people to remember the distinction between republican and conservative. i see too many people interchange the terms and this needs to be recognized.
one can be a conservative and not a republican and one can be a republican and be a progressive.
this creepy elitist pol from michigan needs to be tared and feathered, figuratively speaking of course, along with the other lindsey grahams in d.c. and elsewhere.
while we're at it we need to correct the twisted caricature of what it is to be a conservative.
The chubby face of tyranny as exposed by the chubby face of free speech!
It's Michigan. A Republican in Michigan would pretty much be a flaming lefty in any of the red states.
The Democrats have after 50 years running Michigan left it dead last for jobs.
Only a brain dead voter would ever vote the slime in office.
"Good moral character" and "politicians" are a contradiction in terms.
Red Stater,
While still arguably controversial, I do believe that the Incorporation Doctrine renders your argument both incorrect and moot. Briefly, the United States Supreme Court has held that most, but not all, guarantees of the federal Bill of Rights limit state and local governments as well as the federal government through the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. Consequently, states have been required to respect the first ammendment for some time now.
Great idea, a 'politician license'. What's would my limit be ? Hopefully, more than just one per season.
Snidely Whiplash has gotten fat and wants to tie us all, not just Nell, to the railroad tracks. And just where in the hell is his hat ?
Well, yes, which is why I said this: "It has since been determined that the BIll of Rights extends to the states, but it wasn't so in the beginning."
I think we also need IQ tests and a clean mental bill of health. It would severely limit the number of people who could serve, but that would be a good thing!
That would clean house!
Bwahahahahaha, depends on your definition of a 'trophy\”
Surviving in a free society keeps one honest. In a controled society lies are protected. Our freedom to speak or not speak is a right given from our creator.
"Possession of a degree in journalism or other degree substantially equivalent."
Good thing they didn't come up with this idea 50 years ago – Walter Cronkite would have had to find another job.
Maybe even an oxymoron.
Bob Keeshan was a better man than he.
Season is Jan. 1 thru Dec. 31, with a special day featuring No Limitations on 'Methods of Taking' on April 15th. No daily bag or possession limits…
What next? Concealed carry permits for video cameras?
Bob Keeshan was a genuine American hero.
Here is a good take on immigration.

That guy with the monopoly man mustache definitely needs to be vetted.
