In the week following the Israeli boarding of boats piloted by Turkish “peace activists” off the coast of Gaza, Caroline Glick and the good folks at the Hebrew-language Israeli news site Latma created a parody video skewering the violent actions perpetrated by those “peace activists” against members of the Israeli authorities attempting to enforce the Gaza blockade. The video went up on YouTube and garnered three million views within a matter of days.
Created as a parody of the 1980s activist song “We are the World,” the Latma song was named “We Con the World” and humorously depicted an array of Palestinian supporters singing about how they’d fooled the world into thinking that it was the Israelis that were the bad guys in the Gaza blockade incident.

The video was very clever and hit just the right notes of humor being not too mean-spirited yet easily hitting home with its message. The humor of the video was wholly in keeping with western humor and not over-the-top or unduly offensive at all. Naturally, YouTube pulled it anyway.
On her website, Glick reports that the video’s creators were told by YouTube that the use of the original song, “We are the World,” was a copyright violation (Warner/Chappell Music.) But Glick disputes this claim.
Copyright experts we advised with before posting the song told us in no uncertain terms that we were within our rights to use the song because we did so in accordance with the Fair Use Doctrine. The Fair Use Doctrine, copied and pasted below from the US Copyright Office, stipulates that it is legal and permissible to use copyrighted material under the fair use doctrine for purposes of parody.
Glick reminds us that this isn’t the first time that YouTube has censored pro-Israeli videos and recounts that the Israeli Defense Force had its videos deleted by YouTube but had them reinstated later after mounting protests.
Glick is right to think that there is “something else going on here,” doubting that YouTube pulled the video over copyright concerns. After all, the video had been seen by over 3 million people and had been featured in numerous news reports already. Why pull the video at this late date?
Glick ascribes it to the anti-Israeli bias of the Google-owned YouTube site, and with its long history of censoring pro-Israel videos not to mention American conservative videos, it’s hard to dismiss her feelings.

The video can still be seen in a post by Ed Morrissey of HotAir.com. Morrissey found the video on YouTube and downloaded it before the Google folks deleted it.
Also a quick check of the media watchdog website Newsbusters.org reveals that YouTube has been pulling pro-conservative videos for a long time now. A search on Newsbusters of the phrase youtube pulls video gives results going back years.
Shouldn’t YouTube be supporting free and open debate?

If only American college students were intelligent enough to see the truth in this video.
but than one would also have to to rely on college professors to learn to be open minded enough,……
to allow the viewing of it,……….
and that would be asking to much.
You tube does stuff the devil couldn't dream of. Much like the current admnistration.
Helen Thomas strikes again!

Palestinians? You mean Jews? Sorry, I like to use words with their original meanings.
The "Palestinians" are no more Palestinian than my cat.
Screw YOUT-ubes. The mentality of left at work.
Garbage in garbage out.
Same as wiki – left as left can be.
Been going on for years now, I rarely use either site and laugh at those that use it for their 'factual information' sources.
Remember for quite a while after 9/11 you'd often hear, "If we end up ________ (fill in blank with some action or reaction), then the terrorists will have won."
Well it's almost 10 years later now and apparently we are ________.
You Tube has as much relevence to any serious discussion, other than entertainment, as some phoney Hollywood celebrity talking about politics.
Google and You Tube are propaganda partners with the current regime.
Sounds like someone (mmmm, Breitbart?) needs to start a conservative version. That and a PayPal that won't dump conservative blogs.

I think you're reading too much into this. YouTube is more afraid of lawyers than Palestinians. You could put up a video of a family picnic, but if there's a radio playing in the background YouTube will pull it for copyright infringement. I doubt YouTube even looks at the videos. They just strip the sound or delete the video entirely at the first angry letter they get from anyone that claims to be a lawyer.
Copyright violation? What is that – a joke? Some ten-year-old boy does a suggestive dance to Lady Gaga and 15 million watch it – where's the violation there? Remember Numa Numa? If youtube is going to censor, at least they could come up with a reason that passes the stink test. But they can't because it is blatant anti-Semitism. Case closed.
WTF! Some show called the "Ministry of Animals" is comparing Mohammed to St. Joseph and how much they are alike, except the whole part about Mohammed raping, murdering, lying, pedophilia…but dammit, he was great with pets and to the environment.

What?
They better pull all of the Weird Al Yankovic videos then, they're all "parodies" as well and while they're at it they should pull every other video that uses ANYONE'S music for "parody". This is a direct assault on comedic "parodies" under the first amendment that the supreme court has repeatedly protected over the decades for liberals. Either "youtube" grows up and recognizes this fact or conservatives need to file a class action against them for first amendment violations. I'm pretty certain there is an anti trust lawsuit in here somewhere as well since their 'service' disproportionately favors one group over another.
Get the lawyers on this one!
It ought to be interesting to see the ACLU try to defend the "copyright" holders on this one and push for "parody licensing" after all of their years of railing against it…
Clearly from now on every time a conservative sees a video that offends, we will report it and then see what happens.
Google and YouTube pulling this video helps to underscore the truth it tells.
They can try to silence/censor us, but it'll epically fail. Just another example of the progressive ideology at work.
Hey Youtube, Hugo Chavez much?
Editors: Please note that "Click" is consistently used instead of "Glick" throughout the article. The link to Caroline Glick's blog shows that "Glick" is correct.
Otherwise, kudos!

I disagree with each of those groups.
But they have a right to be different, until they try forcing me to do anything.
Atheists are forcing me to give up my heritage, coming from a Christian nation.
Homosexuals, they deserve the privacy in their own homes, but in the military too?
Muslims, they deserve ritual foot baths in airports and religious prayer mats but Christians have to take down crosses in chapels before Obama will speak from them? http://ztruth.typepad.com/ztruth/2009/04/white-ho...
they are just doing their Saudi paymasters bidding

I hate olives, but I would never deny others the chance to try them.
Well, if you really want to use the original meaning, you'd be talking about the Hellenic invaders who set up a bunch of city-states on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean. That is, those who the Hebrew-Canaanites called the Philistines (roughly translating as "invaders").
They ceased to exist a few thousand years ago, however. The Romans just renamed Judea "Palestine" in reaction to Jewish rebellion against the Roman occupation.
It was a foreign version of a native word for foreign invaders, used by foreign invaders to try and erase the identity of those same natives.
And it still is.
You must be so proud of that diploma you received – from grade school. I have connections to literacy groups that could actually teach you to write correctly.
let me guess… your parents are teachers LOL
Muslim Youtube users are very, very big on false-flagging videos which question or mock Islam , or expose their al-taqiyya for copyright infringement. Youtube yanks them first, asks questions never.
Does anyone remember Chuck Devore's (sp) "After the hope of November is gone" vid that was removed? I kept hoping he would keep up the fight to keep it.
Well, except for all those dogs he had slaughtered when he needed to blame something for his failure to drum up a good "revelation" that one time…
Turns out the archangel Gabriel really hates dogs, and won't show up if there's one nearby. Who knew?
God bless Israel.
"Pickering"?
Muslim users false-flag videos questioning Islam for alleged copyright infringement as standard practice, at this point. They know how to game the system.
If anyone thinks "gas masks" and "night vision goggles" are "just aid", I've got the deed to a bridge in Brooklyn. Interested?
This "blockade" tactic is "make nice" child's play compared to what will for sure be coming Hamas' way, probably sooner then later…..
Until one side defeats the other completely and decisively, this on going death dance Israel engages in with these throwback terrorists, will continue ad nauseum.
I'm pretty sure you can find all three of those groups commenting on some level of the Big sites. Hell, there are gays and atheists who write articles for these sites.
But you're set in your ways, and so am I.
Excellent idea!!! If we all go into youtube and report abuse on every video that slams conservatives, that would be a start. Then we can start on other videos.
I like olives. Does that make me a Muslim?
Is that anything like "Kipling"? I've never kippled, nor do I recall ever pickering…

Those useful idiots at YouTube are eagerly awaiting their muslim overlords.
Check out the Diaspora Project on Kickstarter.com. Depending how well it serves, it might be a good engine for upstarts, and your tool of choice later this year.
We can't depend on corporate types to stand up to threats. We have to use the tools that become available, or develop our own, to keep up the fight. One of the new tools coming soon (I trust) is the diaspora project, coming from kickstarter.com. It will provide a new hosting engine, for those of us who think such a tool might be useful.
Yes, we saw that originally. Somehow it didn't get the corrected version when it posted. Sorry about that.
I checked some of the videos pulled from You Tube. Seems they are rolling over just like comedy central. Boy o boy, when freedom of speech can be controlled by radical groups, we are in serious trouble. Wait a minute. Aren't the dims trying the same thing? I think that "yes" is the correct answer. They sure want the FCC to regulate the Internet. Wait for it. Shortly we will have a group of appointed individuals to determine what is correct and incorrect speech, and what is appropriate to think and to hear. It's the socialist PC crowd out and about again. George Orwell's, "1984" is coming to a town near you sooner than you think.

YouTube does know that the most radical jihadists would kill them for putting pictures and video up at all, doesn't they? Think all the books the Taliban burned for having pictures in them. Kissing up to the people who would ban you had they the power is counterproductive.

Gentle Readers,
Glick violated Warners Copyrights. She didn't use a clip or an excerpt or her own parodied composition, she used the work in it's entirety without permission.
BIGJOURNALISM would have the same complaint.
Youtube carries the actual security camera video from the ship that was boarded. It shows the IHH preparing
weapons for an attack on Israeli soldiers hours before the event.
http://www.youtube.com/user/idfnadesk#p/c/D367B77...
Much better information here and no copyright violations.
- J Lepant Brighton CO
Caroline Glick's lawyers' legal advice was 100% correct. The Supreme Court held long ago in Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music (92-1292), 510 U.S. 569 (1994) that songs like We Con the World are absolutely fair use and protected under the First Amendment. And Rush Limbaugh's parodies by Paul Shanklin (like Barack the Magic Negro) are equally protected. YouTube is a censor for the Left.
[...] » Terrorists Rejoice: YouTube Pulls Pro-Israeli Video – Big Journalism [...]
Sure. I'll trade you it for the world's only successful Communist nation.
Dear GuestSpeaker,
On the contrary: I wasn't privy to the conversation, but what Ms. Glick has posted at her website clearly states that what she did was an unauthorized use of other people copyrighted materials.
You can't do a ' movie review ' or ' commentary ' or a ' parody ' using 88 minutes from a 90 minute movie! 88 seconds would be OK, but not 88 minutes!
Paul Shanklins parody is an original composition, and as such, is itself protected material.
My reason for posting is that I am sick and tired of people STEALING MY COPYRIGHTS & using every BS EXCUSE from here to Timbuktu! Rush Limbaugh, the BIG sites and Ms. Glick rely on Copyright protection to earn a living! They should be defending Copyrights, not stealing them or excusing the theft!
Sincerely,
J Lepant
Dear GuesSpeaker,
The lawyers advice was 100% correct, and had Ms. Glick followed that advice SHE WOULD NOT have made that video. She should have followed their counsel.
Sincerely,
John Lepant

I found your entry interesting thus I’ve added a Trackback to it on my weblog
…
Dear Missy8s,
Actually, when Weird Al does a parody he gets permission when he uses the actual work. Furthermore, his parodies are themselves copyright protected works.
Have you notices his parodies have the same label as the parodied work?
Ms. Glick works for a newspaper: she's a writer: would she like it if people used her work without attribution, credit or permission?
This site is copyright protected as well.
Kindest Regards,
J Lepant Brighton CO
I believe the article stands, although Missy might be in error in her post. IAMAL.
Parodies are protected under fair use, and YouTube has a long, long history of allowing Islamicist and terrorist videos to remain, even though they violate the terms of the site. This is discussed often over at:
http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/
Dear Mr. Harding,
Not the entire work without permission. If someone parodies BIGJOURNALISM they can make a facsimile, or use part of the site, ( a very small part ), but if they took the entire site and used it without permission that would be a copyright violation.
Don't use 89 minutes of a 90 minute movie and call it a parody. That would be unauthorized use.
Honestly: a little common sense goes along way.
Youtube is hosting the IDF video footage, which is far better evidence anyway.
Sincerely,
J Lepant Brighton CO
