One of the many ways in which the Associated Press lends its support to Democrats and leftists in its political reporting is often evident in its stories about political scandals. The most common assist the AP gives to Democrats is to somehow forget to mention that a politician in the news because of criminal activity or other scandals is a Democrat. Yet when any pol in the news for scandal is a Republican, his party affiliation often leads the story, if it isn’t in the headline, even.
Oh, it’s all accidental I’m sure, but it happens so often as to give the suspicion of a concerted effort. And here we have a great example of the AP’s penchant for covering for Democrats:
The writer is AP’s Colleen Long and on June 14 she penned two stories on separate political scandals, both of them occurring in New York. These criminal cases concern political operatives and how Long treats them is telling.

The first of Long’s stories concerns Hank Morris, a former advisor to former N.Y. State Comptroller Alan Hevesi — a scandalous figure in his own right. Morris is a long-time Democrat operative who faces 123 charges, “including enterprise corruption, securities fraud, grand larceny, bribery and money laundering, according to an indictment.” The feds are also charging him.
Here is how Long’s AP article describe Morris in its second paragraph:
Hank Morris, a once-adviser to former state comptroller Alan Hevesi, has been accused of taking kickbacks and other payments to steer billions of dollars in pension fund investments to favored companies in a “pay-to-play” scheme.
Notice how neither Morris nor Hevesi’s party is identified. This holds true for the entire story. The word Democrat does not appear.
The second story details the travails of one John Haggerty, a Republican operative accused of stealing one million dollars of state funds. Haggerty apparently conceived some scheme to “dupe” Mayor Michael Bloomberg into diverting funds to the state Independence Party, cash that eventually ended up in Haggerty’s pockets.
Here is Long’s very first paragraph:
A Republican operative was indicted Monday on charges he exploited his political reputation to swindle $1.1 million from Mayor Michael Bloomberg, claiming he would use funds to help guard against election fraud but instead buying a house, prosecutors said.

Now, going back to the first story, the one on Democrat Morris, one looks in vain for the word “Democrat” anywhere in the story. Colleen Long never once identifies criminal Morris as a long-time Democrat operative. Yet in the Haggerty story, Long calls out his party affiliation with the very first words of the story. In fact, it’s in the headline:
Republican operative in NY accused of stealing $1M.
So, it’s amnesia when a Democrat involved in a scandal, but if it happens to be a troubled Republican, why the AP makes darn sure that readers are aware that he is a member of the GOP. This is what we call the “Name that Party” game. Take a story about any pol in which party affiliation is missing and you can be sure that the criminal pol is a Democrat.
The Associated Press covers for Democrats quite well, indeed.

And that is why I don't bother with the national news coverage in my local paper. I know exactly how all of the AP pieces will be spun. No wonder the traditional media is withering away while the new media is thriving
Agreed the AP has a lot of stories slanted as described – sometimes gratuitously going out of their way to select some irrelevant incident just to paint the R side worse.
But in the last few months, some AP writers have taken to fact-checking Obama, quite accurately. It always comes as a surprise. Maybe Obama's so far left that he's outside the pale of AP's general herd mentality.

If I don't find the party affiliation in the first two paragraphs I know it's a democrat. The biggest question that I came away with was; Why would Bloomberg pay somebody to prevent election fraud? Didn't he want to get elected?

Media Busters has a section on its website called "Name That Party," where it tracks just this kind of idiocy. The AP is definitely not alone in this practice.
Hey what do you expect? The dems paid for the news, they should get it their way. Can't wait for the gov't subsidies.
We are all NPR now.
and they wonder why the media is dying.
MSM's continue to play to the narrative and this should not come as a surprise to anyone. No wonder they've lost all integrity and rightly so. Good riddance. There are a number of journalistic avenues evolving as we speak. And "We" will be the driving force that dictates their success or failure.
"If I don't find the party affiliation in the first two paragraphs I know it's a democrat."
Agreed.

Little known fact……………we the people are on to them. We have cracked the code, no mention of Party means the person involved is a Democrat. Hell that was easier that cracking enigma during WWII.
This has gone on for many years. It's become second nature when reading negative stories of politicians that (R) means republican and ( ) means democrat.
It's one of the reasons that we have cancelled our newspaper subscription after having one my entire life. Every year the biases increased until I could no longer tolerate it.
When are these Scumtrash in the media going to learn that kissing the rear ends of the Soroses of the world get ou one thing. A death sentence.
It's not even journalism any more. The media has become a volunteer public relations office of the left.
OK, I have one question…Is anyone surprised by this? As was said, this is why the Old Guard media is failing miserably and New media is flourishing.
The associated press should be called the " Propaganda Machine for Leftist Change". We will take back our country one propaganda entity at a time. Restore the Republic. “You, the politicians in Washington, have failed We The People with your bailouts, out-of-control deficit spending, government takeovers of sectors of the economy, Cap & Trade, government-run health care, and higher taxes! If you thought we were just going to quietly go away, or that this tea party movement would be just a passing fad, you were mistaken. We’re taking our country back!”

HEADLINE: Dying Lying Democrat Media Commits Suicide by Blatant Bias
I've noticed this practice for many years- it's like they teach it in journalism school. another common 'oversight' is how in any story about a striking union you can NEVER find how much they're currently making in salary & bennies. it's not unusual to find info about management compensation salted throughout the article, but it must violate a basic law of physics to spell out what the union employees are pulling down…
the AP is worse than MSNBC…worse than the alphabet networks..Huffinglue Post, etc. COMBINED. their stories get picked up by virtually every American newspaper.. and to the disinterested, they appear to be writing a straight news story. But as is documented here, they slant to the left all the time…their choice of words is telling. they omit facts when those facts support conservatives. they are THE most dangerous media opponent of conservatives.
I wonder how they will avoid mentioning party affiliation when the S.C Dems overturn the people's choice?
Is it legal to throw out the results, because they don't agree with them?
That's a horrifying thought.
Conservatives should start a non profit radio station and a public TV station funded in part by the fed government to compete with NPR and PBS.
This will force a public debate on the true meaning of un-biased broadcasting and thus prove the lefts true hypocrisy.
Or at least buy and transform Newsweek and watch it grow to the most read weekly out there.
Really, it's to the point that I stunned when al AP does mention that a crook is a Democrat.

Here's how AP reported on Bob Etheridge assaulting the student journalists:
Headline: "NC congressman apologizes for behavior on video"
First paragraph: "RALEIGH — A North Carolina congressman is apologizing for his response when two young men approached him in Washington, D.C., with a video camera and asked if he supports President Obama's agenda.
Okay, admittedly they do mention his party in the second paragraph — in this version of the story, found here: http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tom-blumer/2010/06/1.... That's a long way from putting his party affiliation in the headline, though, don't you think.
For the records, I've also found a non-AP story that is VERY close to the AP story, and that fails to mention his party at all: http://www.jdnews.com/news/text-79346-color-left…..
Of course, we know that it's not just AP doing it, but they are definitely a prime example.
I love this game! I play it every time I read a corruption story.
The issue of party affiliation is left to the individual journalist according to the AP Stylebook: "Let relevance be the guide in determining whether to include a political figure's party affiliation in a story." I would suggest relevance goes to future historical skewing. Consider the results of a Google search by students and historians today and imagine what it will be like by the year 2015:
Republican scandal currently brings up 32,500,000 hits
Democrat scandal currently brings up 2,980,000 hits
It's a smart, long-term techie move to create a false historical record.
I recommend an insightful article by Randy Fardal that examines a federal raid on a New York democrat party leader. The Associated Press article he discussed was listed in my Google search asking about republicans but not in the democrat query, giving a false positive.
http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2010/04/anoth...
My question is: Why isn't the AP Stylebook bombed with complaints and demands for change?
It is time, isn't it? The disparity is real, isn't it? The historical record is falsified isn't it?
Here is the contact address for AP Stylebook:
http://www.apstylebook.com/?do=contact
People who respect the historical record despise such cretins who deny and defraud historical truth.
Fox News does this all the time. They identified Mark Foley and John Ensign as Democrats when their scandals hit, and have an established record of these sort of "slip ups." No biggie.
AP = Always Progressive. Need I say more?
Dude, you're just noticing this? Try looking to see where "Former Clinton confidant" or "Democrat operative" appear in anything written about Ken Lay.
Politico's first mention of the story went like this… "Breitbart strikes again…"
they made it all about Breitbart, and the 'ambush' reporters, and minimized the entire incident.
you can also guess the race of the perp.. if they don't have a mug shot in the article, it is usually a minority.
50 Reasons Why the Democrats are Hypocrites when it Comes to ENRON: http://www.american-partisan.com/cols/2002/guest/...
You've identified two slip ups (without proof). Assuming you can prove these two slip ups, how does this make an "established record" of misidentifying party affiliation?
And, exactly what is the point, anyway? No one is accusing AP of misidentifying the party of elected officials, but of purposely avoiding mentioning the party of Democrat wrongdoers while highlighting the party of GOP wrongdoers. Do you not see the distinction there?
There is no distinction, and you can google Fox's habitual misleading identifications if you're that curious. No biggie, remember?
They sure do. And I was one of the ones that helped them start that page! LOL (Oh, and it's "Newsbusters."
"Dude," no I am not "just noticing this." I've been writing "name that party" stories for years now and have dozens of them in my archives. But, just in case you aren't aware not EVERYONE knows abut this old media habit. This story is for those that are unaware of it.
This has been going on for years. I first noticed it during the 2004 election. Might be interesting to go back and see just how long it has been used.
Nice.

Telling people to google something might pass for proof in your world, with pink skies and cotton candy clouds, but in the real world, it falls short.
I can believe that all news services make mistakes in their rush to get the news out, and though Fox is good, they're not perfect. But that's a long way from being intentionally misleading.
This article points out that AP's actions can only be intentionally misleading. If you repeatedly highlight the party affiliation of some wrongdoers while repeatedly failing to similarly highlight (or even identify) the party identity of another group, that shows intentional bias.
We all know that "mainstream" media sources like AP are dominated by registered Democrats with many ties to countless Liberal organizations. I have no problem with that whatsoever, except that sources like AP go to great lengths to show how unbiased they are. The reality is that AP is highly biased, and is intentionally misleading its readers.
Further proof… Eddie Perez (Democrat), mayor of Hartford, was convicted of corruption today. Nowhere in the media reports (including Fox News) do they mention what his party affiliation is. Go figure!
Do you remember the American dream? A dream that all individuals are created equal, hard work can prevail, and no challenge is too great.
These beliefs are still alive and thriving in the American people, but Washington is working tirelessly to stomp them out. Washington politicians would have you believe that you aren't capable enough to make your own decisions, that hard work shouldn't precede success, and that instead of finding solutions, we should find out, as the President said, "Whose a#! to kick."
Well, we remember the American dream, and we believe you understand the repercussions if we allow that dream to be eroded by an out-of-control, one-party supermajority in Washington. That is why it is urgent that all Americans "Remember November."
Restore the Republic
