Ben Smith of Politico has posted a story that essentially mislead readers about what newfound conservative hero Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey thinks about immigration. Smith’s article spins Christie into an “amnesty” supporter when it doesn’t seem he is. One has to wonder: why did Smith do this?

Among many other issues, in the multipage interview with Christie, Smith broached the immigration issue. Being a governor, Christie is faced with as much trouble over the issue as any other, of course, but Smith’s characterization of Christie’s position on immigration would tend to make one feel that Christie is an amnesty supporter. In fact, Smith seems to impute several ideas or feelings into Christie’s replies that may not have been in them at all.
First off, Smith says that Christie had “long declined to ‘demagogue’ the issue” of immigration. It does not seem, however, that Christie has ever claimed to have a long record of refusing to “demagogue” the immigration issue.
Next Smith asserts that Christie says that “stringent state-by-state laws – such as in Arizona – are the wrong approach” for immigration. However, there is no sentiment about stringent anything in Christie’s reply to Smith’s questions. The word stringent did not appear at all.
Lastly, Smith claims that Christie said he wanted to see a “‘clear’ path to legalization for immigrants.” Naturally it doesn’t seem that Christie said word one about any “clear path” to citizenship.

In fact, it seems even Smith’s readers were suspicious of his reporting of Christie’s replies on the subject of immigration. They were so suspicious that Smith had to post a more full accounting of Christie’s replies on immigration during the interview.
Here is that expanded post on Christie’s answers on immigration:
“What I support is making sure that the federal government [plays] each and every one of its roles: Securing the border, enforcing immigration laws, and having an orderly process — whatever that process is — for people to gain citizenship.”
He added: “It’s a very easy issue to demagogue and I’m just not going to participate in that.”
Christie said more resources — specifically, “money” — were needed to support federal law enforcement and border security, along with “having a clear understandable law that people can follow.”
“Until you have both of those…you’re not going to fix the problem,” he said.
Christie also said he thinks state and local law enforcement don’t have appropriate training to enforce immigration laws, and that it can distract them from their overriding goal of keeping the public safe.
Notice that Christie did not characterize Arizona’s law as “stringent”? Notice that Christie did not say he wanted a “clear path” to citizenship as Smith claimed? Also notice how Christie just said he wouldn’t demagogue the immigration issue but did not say he “long declined” to demagogue the immigration issue?
Christie is certainly an enforcement-first guy. He feels the federal gov’t is failing to do its duty to protect the border. He would like to see the feds do their duty so the states wouldn’t have to and in that way he obviously feels that Arizona shouldn’t have a role in border enforcement. But Christie did not pass judgment on the “stringency” of Arizona’s or any other state’s actions.
For some reason, one I’ll leave to you to imagine, Smith decided to impute all sort of sentiments into Christie’s replies on immigration. Needless to say, Chris Christie is a current hero to many conservatives and knocking him from that pedestal would certainly benefit the left.
For what ever reason Politico’s Ben Smith and co-writer Maggie Haberman did so, on the immigration issue their story adds emotional sentiment to Christie’s answers that it doesn’t appear he expressed in the interview. Nor does it appear that Christie has a history of holding such sentiment. Instead, it’s largely in the imaginations of the reporters.

So it appears Ben Smith of the Politico may have had a bias? Hmmmmm. Can't really say that's a first time.
I bet Ben Smith is on the JournoList.
Sooner or later, folks will figure out how Soros spends his money… for influence. He and the regime are one and the same. Prove me wrong. First troll bite wins a weekend of misery.
A.B.,
I'm sorry, but don't you need to find some more sophisticated sheep? How are we supposed to keep our talking points in order here? Today? Christie = good. A few days ago? Christie = questionable. I don't get it -do we criticize him for being a bit disingenuous on budget matters (bad), or do we defend him for being taken out of context on an important issue such as "immigration"? (good). I now understand why so many people are "liberals". It is so much easier when you have someone else to do your thinking for you…
GF
(okay, -2 so far. WHY? I am saying that we on the Right THINK FOR OURSELVES!!! Was I that obtuse?) Edited because the (-) clickers had nothing to say…
They also claimed Christie was also against offshore drilling, but that was not true either.

I'm not by any means a fan of 24ahead.com/s/ben-smith but, as usual, I'm not exactly trusting of Warner Todd Huston's opinion. Especially since I've been covering immigration matters since 2002 in literally thousands of posts.
So, for instance, I've been keeping track of those using "orderly"-style phrases since 2004: http://24ahead.com/s/safe-legal-orderly
Those using variations on that include Bush, Obama, Mexican officials, and… Chris Christie.
And, the three pillars in his first paragraph in the quote are… immigration "reform", aka amnesty.
And, regarding local enforcement, ICE already trains cops to do things similar to what the BP et al have been successfully doing for decades, and, for instance, the person in charge of ICE, stood up for Arpaio vis-a-vis racial profiling. Cops can do that, even just jail-side. Maybe he's just oppose to Arpaio-style sweeps and he'd support jail-side enforcement; if so he should have said that.
See also http://24ahead.com/n/7660 for what he said a couple of years ago.

I live ON the border, the Mexico/U.S. border is 1.6 miles from my front door – a quick walk to Mexico – not just bucolic beautiful Mexico but actually midtown Juarez, Chihuahua – the most dangerous city on EARTH.
The professionals who patrol this border can smell where these people come from, they have x-ray machines that can look into to semi trucks, they have top secret equipment galore and God Bless 'em.
No AMNESTY – no way – no how. Stop the flow – then deport ALL that can be rounded up and deported – THEN judiciously allow LEGAL immgration – only once phase One and Two are accomplished.
Gave you back 1. I get it. Consistancy – that's a good trait – but many pols lack that trait – maybe because some many politicians are lawyers too – double speak is an "art form".
Actually, I saw an interview with hannity (I think it was him).He was asked his thoughts on ileegals and he said secure the border but you can't" send them back.Which makes me really not care much for him
I get a real kick out of correcting people who use that "can't send them back" excuse. I always tell them about the "operation wetback" of the early 50's. Over 1 million illegals were deported……. Without anything like the resources (computer data bases, photo id, etc.,) that we have today. Illegal immigrant enablers REALLY hate to hear about that.
A so called " main stream" journalist twisting a conservatives words to fit his own agenda? What is so surprising?
I agree with actsnow. Ben is probably a charter member of journolist along with the entire staff of Politico, the entire group at MSNBC, CNN, NBC, CBS of course, and many of ABC. I still have faith a couple at ABC are not completely "in the tank". Yeah, I know. Probably misplaced faith.
The 'media' as we once knew it no longer exists. Sad but enlightening. Just think, one of the 'journolist' regulars on MSNBC thinks of himself as a modern day Murrow. What a laughingstock he and his network have become.
[...] Politico Misleads On NJ Gov. Christie’s Immigration Position [...]
Wow. You look at the full conversation they had on immigration versus what Smith printed Governor Christie said and I don't think yoga master could pull the kind of pretzel-like twisting that Smith did.
I fail to see the subtleties in all this talk on "immigration."
You're either here in the country legally or you're not.
If you're here legally, you get to stay.
If you're here illegally, you don't get to stay.
If you popped out an anchor child, he/she doesn't get to stay as a ward of the state. He/she gets to go back with Mom and Dad until he/she is 18 and considered an adult not requiring government support and can then get a passport and return.
What's so complicated about that?
Imagine there were no countries. What is a border, anyway? It's an artificial line drawn to keep people apart. We Americans have so much good stuff, it is criminal for us not to share it with people from Mexico. Let them all in if they want to come here. This will help with the establishment of a real global government where the people of Earth can be one. We can pay all of our taxes to them and they can make sure everybody is guaranteed success. Then we can, like, all get along and stuff. I'd like to buy the world a home and furnish it with love, grow apple trees and honey bees, and snow white turtle doves. I'd like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony, I'd like to buy the world a Coke and keep it company.
(Yes, this posting was complete sarcasm, but some mental midgets actually think that way. Stirred the old gag reflex just typing it.)
The "subtleties" arise when people conflate legal immigration with illegal immigration. <sarc>I can't imagine why folks would be doing that.</sarc> Oh, I know – because the idiotic MSM and other operatives of the Left do everything they can to make sure that happens.
This is no different than the "stem cell" strategy – average undereducated moron thinks "George Bush was against stem cell research! He doesn't want Christopher Reeve to walk!" Sure, the truth is simply that he [rightfully] didn't want the government in the business of enriching the abortion industry – he was opposed to government funded embryonic stem cell research. But, no, he has to be misrepresented and separate issues have to be ignorantly combined to get the idiots all upset. (Further, there's the mentality that "unless the government is funding something, it isn't going to happen" – as if private industry isn't a far better arbiter of what is going to be worthwhile and what is not. But that's a whole 'nother issue.)
Jb
you are on the right path. How about the repeal of the 1965 Immigration Reform? Bring back quotas? Allow a majority from the countries who truly are our allies? This would then allow for a more consistent control of our immigration policies.
Remember when the 'Liberal Lion' (err douchebag, drunk, philandering killer) Ted Kennedy assured the populace that the Immigration Reform of 1965 would never lead to unfettered and out of control immigration that would overwhelm the system?
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?
I have to agree with the flopping confusion. Christie carries himself (and yes that seems like a job unto itself) as a true conservative, but then capitulates to the left on the budget in NJ. He has them by the cajones and then lets up. What gives?
It certainly leads to headache for me to understand the true direction that he is headed and what are the underlying principles for such. Lets just hope for his sake and many others that there truly is a conservative plan afoot.
Ben, Christie's waaaaay outta your weight class, and I ain't talkin body mass. Don't have a clue why Christie gave him the time of day, let alone an interview. Who reads this clown anyway? Garofalo? Whoopie?
Rather than wasting time on journalists on Soros's payroll, better to find out if Soros's Secretary Of State project has snuck in your state's back door. Soros is buyin every SOS election for sale. And well, they DO make the rules and certify all elections.
Kinda important to know, ummmmm?
So true. Thanks for the (+)1 brother James, it has resulted in a mere -6 as of this reply. I s'pose I should be a little more simple about it next time. I thought it was a pretty good slam against lefties myself…

I hope we are in time to avert a massive meltdown, and I believe the TEA party movement is a welcome sign that the people are starting to understand the consequences of bad policies (bad philosophy). When a greater number of our representatives are drawn from the people instead of the political class we will begin to see a return to what this nation should be…
de nada bro. I'm thinking of going to LA at the end of August for a show and will hook up with HPD and LOL. "Lemondrop" may get another Dave Matthewws show out of it, but I want to knock back a few with the left coasters.
If you can make it, that would be great. All the Chicago crew, you and Annie and Ralph. I know it's quite a trek though. It's an easy drive from here and I actually love L.A. I'm a movie nut and I love going to Guitar Center Hollywood to see all the gear I can't afford.
I live in New Jersey and Chris Christie is the last best hope for this state. Corzine brought this state to a fiscal disaster and his Union contracts were shameful, simply shameful (I would say criminal, but that's another story). I'm with Christie 100% and he's the only thing standing in between us and total state bankruptcy. If we don't want New Jersey to be another California (some say we already are), then you'd better support Christie, stick with him, and hope he succeeds.
Politico is a leftist rag. I used to visit a couple times day; now I only go there once or twice a week when there's a link that's unusually interesting. Whatever will they do when the Democrats are out of power? If the Repubs had any cojones at all, they wouldn't give them the time of day.
Jamesb,
Ae you a guitar head? I have a stadium Taylor 214ce acoustic electric with cutout & a 1973 Framus Les Paul clone (cherry sunburst). I a Huge fan of Paul Reed Smith guitars (and I happen to actually know the guy). I bought the electric like 22 years ago and goofed around but never got good and I've been carrying it around ever since. I've been taking lessons for over 6 months now though and starting to actually learn how to play. I love SRV, Clapton, Johnny Lang, Texas blues, and good country stuff…
-5 now bro. You make a good point.
I hope you have a great 4th.
Cool! Good luck! I love it., My Martin is right by my couch were I troll from right in reach. My gf Kelly is learning too. That's great.
Ya, I've been playing since I was 12 or 13. I play bass primarily – and flat pick acoustic guitar. I'm IN LOVE with PRS semi-hollow but I'd like a Les Paul first. PRS makes AWESOME axes, very nice.
I've been through a bunch of basses and guitars over the years, Rickenbacker 4003, a '63P-Bass, a '68Tele Bass (I played it for years) I had a Dan Amrstrong Ampeg (acryllic see through) a '68 EB-0 (SG-style) Gibson bass, a Martin HD-28, I played an Acoustic stack and then miced through the house PA usually – during my parties and bars ( and MASSIVE KEGGERS) period. I had a Marshall bass box (not that good) and all kinds of equipment.
Today I have a Martin acoustic and a Squire/Fender Jazz Bass. Love 'em both. I'm not the gear whore I used to be, but I still have a list of guitars and basses I'd like.
When we were all in Chicago the otherday the band started up (little shaky) and Kelly wanted me to go "help" but I defered. I was drunk(ish) and they were doing ok by then.
Those Taylor's are VERY NICE. I'm a bit traditional with my Martin's but the new guys like Taylor make beautiful guitars. Collins is another newish maker (to me) that makes killer acoustics.
I was telling the guys that I had to take Kelly to Dave Matthews and she went to the Chicago confab meeting with me. It was really cool, good time. Matthews plays Taylor cutaways – just two or three over a 3 hour show. He plays 'em hard too, he beats em up. I thought I would dislike him but he gives it his all for three hours. I was impressed.
Have you ever seen Zach Brown wail and hammer his nylon Taylor!!!! OMG!!!
I've only got a little fender amp thus far. I'm still starting out as a student. I'm working on CCR "down on the corner" I'm much better at picking melody than chords and rythm.
I REALLY want a PRS, I've known about them for over 20 years, but I'm not worthy yet. Now I know him, and I'm working with him on some side stuff he and his dad invented. so I REALLY want one now…
Thanks for sharing. Hope you an make it out to DC/VA area one of these times…
I have a little practice amp too, that's all I really need. I'd like one of those MG Marshall half stacks, G.C. has them for $600. I don't need one so I haven't done that yet – one day soon I hope. I like the Epiphone Les Pauls for about $450. More than good enough for me. They play well and are priced right.
Me and Kel were in Memphis and went to B.B. King's place and it was very cool, so we went twice – up and back. Anyway the Gibson factory/showroom is right behind Beale St. and what a KILLER showroom. Wow, all Gibson from Hummingbirds to Les Pauls and SG and you can play them if you like. I few good players were pickin'. Awesome place.
Love to get back to D.C. area. it's been about nine or ten years. If we do get out that way – we will sit down and jam. Ok?
Guitars now? I suck. Well, let me rephrase that more accurately- I REALLY SUCK! I have a nice AAAAA flame-top Les Paul (needs a new pick-up, forget which one); a modern, but hot SG (loved Angus as a wee lad…); a heavily customized American Strat; a '52 Tele reissue in "blonde"; a Jazz bass and Taylor 414 Grand Auditorium (not cut-away or electric). My amps? The Jazz bass got a decent Crate amp. My six-stringers? I have a Fender DeVille 212 (WAY TOO MUCH sound) and a little Blues Jr. with a custom cabinet I made from maple and cocobolo (looks retro, if not perfect. Proud of it in any case since I made it…)
Why do I suck at playing? Nobody to get better with. Good technique, just no one to challenge… I will keep trying…
Gotta practice now- I always (last 6 years) take to the yard and play the Star Spangled Banner (in a marred, mangled manner) for Independence Day…
Okay -you love martians and Martins. Is you rifle preference a Marlin? See below (or wherever) for my guitar collection. Now if I could only find someone to play them…

NIce! I had a sh!t load of guitars over the years. Stuff happens – I don't get to emotionally attached.
I played for years in bands and had a ball. Played heavy metal/ heavy rock in clubs and at big parties. We did a LOT of big keg parties for $200 or $300 or even free if it was a friend.
We played all over town. Bar gigs could be a burnout. Usually by day 6 and 7 you're sick of the sets and getting worn down. The party 24/7 and still rock out thing is a big myth in MY opinion. I tried it.
I was young and skinny and driving a '67 Camaro RS/SS then too, good days …
You got me thinking about when I first started playing. It' sounds cliche` but just like in the songs and in lore I used to fall asleep with my guitar in my hands and fall asleep on the floor of my room with the lights on – a dopey wannabe rock star.
I came to grips with my lack of stardom years ago but every once in awhile I'll hear two drummers I played with here in El Paso who are playing on Sirius/XM. One is the 90's era drummer (Clutch Cardon) for "Dangerous Toys" a metal band from Austin and the other is a guy I played with for years – he's the drummer (Hector Munoz) for Alejandro Escavedo – a roots, singer song writer type – also from Austin. (I played with a another El Paso drummer who is now a great L.A. session guy. He's gone on the road with the Gin Blossoms and others – he's a real great drummer – Charlie Quintana.)
So I'm a degree of seperation from guys on the radio – that's cool by me.
I agree with you that Christie is New Jersey's last best hope. I unfortunately could not stick around to hope any longer. I voted for Christie, but could not hang on and moved south just this month. Having been born and raised in central NJ, raised my children there, it hurt me to leave at the age of 50. The unsustainable promises the states government has made to its citizens has taxed me right out of my birthplace, and the only home I have ever known. I only pray that the country is not going the same way. There is no free lunch, and the hard working can only carry so much. Maybe I am weak, but I could carry no more. Good luck and God bless.
Have a great 4th of July, DMontgomery.

Same to you sir Ewald the Black!
Freedom is not free. Some soldier, marine, sailor, or airman DIED so we can be free. In fact a goodly sum of them have all died so we can be free.
Cherish your Freedom, enjoy the Holiday, and thank God the military is still on duty protecting liberty and freedom.
That is awesome. I've got a good buddy from HS who is a rocking axeman, but he never made it big time. Too scared is part of it with him, and part of it is he hates BS. But nonetheless he kicks ass on guitar.
My goal is to get good enough that I can play with my kids (who are doing Violin and Piano & voice) around the house, maybe around he campfire, and just for fun.
I'm not practicing as much as I should, and I struggle with strumming rythm patterns, but I am having fun and slowly getting better.
That is good enough for me, for now.
I would love to see that.
When you gonna leave Chi Town and come be my neighbor?
Love you Bro!
PS – I'm not good enough to do more than carry your gear…

1. My comment is about WTH's GOP hack-ish attempt to support someone who's Bush-like on this issue; I have no idea why you replied to me.
2. How exactly do you intend to get your grand plan? Just leaving comments in an echo chamber isn't going to work. I have a plan, but I can't get any help with it.
We probably generally agree vis a vis the border. My point is that I live ON the border. Many commentors don't and aren't half Latino like me – so I have a little bit of perspective some don't. You might read and comment about it – I walk the streets of Juarez, Chihuahua (and other Mexican cities) when it was still safe to do so. It's not safe anymore.
I've met and talked with with agents of ALL the agencies charged with immigration enforcement while a student at U. Texas El Paso – so I have that persective too.
Electing the type of representation who understand how important CLOSING down this border is – is step one. Without commitment all else is doomed.
Does that clear up my comments? This is a public discussion, people might just reply to you when you comment, that's *kinda* how it works. I'm one of the prolific commenters on Breitbart/Big sites so I commented on your post – it's what I do. Ok?
That would be a step in the right direction. Mexican illegal immigrants are 99.999 % economic refugees. The U.S. is a big money tree they come here to pick the fruit off of and the mail HOME as much as they can scrape up. My grandfather came to the U.S. as a child with his newly single mother escaping another civil war in Mexico – he was born in Mexico City. He never had one foot still in Mexico like most of these illegals pouring in here.
You're right – no more immigrants from hostile countries – no more sleeper cells. I'd END the "student visa" program until proper enforcement that assures that these "students" are legit and not plants.
Ben Smith is a tired old leftist that some how missed the memo on what does and doesn't work. Pathetico itself is run now by a bunch of just out of high school year book journalists who regularly work on the essays while flipping burgers at night. Really sad crap going on over there.

Gov. Christie should not take interviewes with Ben Smith in the future without a stipulation of publication to prevent Smith from "spinning" the inteview. If that's not possible, then Christie should counter immediately to keep his record transparent with his constituents.
Agreed on both The student visa program is one of Obama's favorite projects right now. He's planning on intensifying and increasing funding on it. Can you guess whih countries he's focused on bringin here?
Prof- There's nothing at all complicated about that! Love it. Oh, if only the 'president' could even come close to thinking in such an American way.

Christie was quoted as saying;
Securing the border, enforcing immigration laws, and having an orderly process — whatever that process is — for people to gain citizenship.”
Notice that Christie did not say he wanted a “clear path” to citizenship as Smith claimed?
What's the difference between an "orderly path" to citizenship and a "clear path" to citizenship.
Not much really and both equate to amnesty.
So Christie supports an amnesty for illegal aliens. Christie outed himself a few years ago in a church in Morris County on this issue.
